My Review - Black Loon Lake
a Novella

SL Coelho's debut fiction promises to be a resounding success. All the elements readers of horror stories and thrillers expect are brilliantly executed within the pages of this compelling story.

Ms. Coelho features a likeable protagonist, a girlfriend and co-worker. They work together as tree planters and share a tent in the wilderness area of the Cariboo-Chilcotin region of Central British Columbia. Throw in the escape of a convicted sex offender, a host of dangerous creatures and you can imagine the tenuous situation our characters find themselves in. This story is anything but predictable.

I'm confident readers of Stephen King and Dean Koontz will feel right at home as they savor this chilling thriller. Character development is excellent. Each character seems to be realistic without being overplayed.

Ms. Coelho's use of lyrical prose to describe the beautiful landscape, paints a vivid impression of the spectacular scenery of the region. Still, that beautiful landscape provides the backdrop for what makes this story more than just a little bit creepy. Action scenes play out in near cinematic fashion and her fight scenes come alive with their realism.

The novella of approximately 13,500 words flows from one scene to the next in smooth linear fashion. It seems to be a much shorter read than it actually is because the story is so engaging.

"Black Loon Lake" hooked me on the first page and I didn't lay it down until I read the last word on the final page. I can see Ms. Coelho featuring this theme in subsequent writings.

Tense, layered and engaging - well worth a read.

In this, her debut work for adults, writer S.L. Coelho weaves a rich tapestry of impending threat, action, claustrophobic interpersonal drama, and expansive setting into a highly engaging read.

Everything starts out innocently enough with the main protagonist, Mike, his girlfriend and friend, out planting trees for cash around Black Loon Lake. S.L. Coelho effectively builds the tension in classic disaster movie fashion, letting the reader in on information about recent events around the lake the characters know nothing of. She intertwines the three main themes of character verses environment, interpersonal strife, and the arrival of a notorious sex offender in the area very well. This is coupled this with some vivid descriptions, an effective sense of place, and well paced action scenes - the story layers conflict on top of impending danger on top of looming menace until the reader genuinely doesn't know which way the narrative will go.

As their trip to the wilds degenerates, the reader's relationship with the characters also changes as initial impressions are proven false and the character's expected roles and alliances shift in a convincing manner in response to the dangers they face and what they discover about themselves and each other.

For me, it was the atmosphere, layering and subtly that I enjoyed most about the story. Recommended.

"Black Loon Lake" by S.L. Coelho has done an excellent job of curing me of any desire to ever again go camping! The story is frightening because of the utter helplessness of the victims to defend themselves, both in the book and in real life. The story begins with a young couple returning to their campsite after a day of fishing, only to discover it torn up and both their dogs missing. One dog's collar is still attached to its tether, while the other tether just has a bit of blood and hair on it. Their trailer is dented and slashed.

Next we move to a tree-planting crew who will spend the summer earning money for school, while living together in a tent out on the jobsite. They suffer through attacks by lust, jealousy, covetousness, each other, a two-legged monster, and a four-legged monster before the one(s) still living can get away.

But life in the wilderness tends to move in cycles, just as history repeats itself. So, thanks, but no thanks... I'm done camping!

However, I DO recommend you read this book. Of the many books I've read in the horror genre, this is one of the most legitimately horrifying I've ever encountered! If you enjoy that sensation of having your guts twisted up in a knot with fear, you have to read Black Loon Lake!

I thoroughly enjoyed S. Coelho's novella Black Loon Lake. Black Loon Lake is a well-written, page-turning thriller that frankly, I couldnt put down! S. Coelho captures your interest from the very beginning. You're pulled right into the action and feel the characters fear and tension as they traverse through a very cleverly crafted and intriguing plot. There is never any down time in Black Loon Lake; you are constantly engaged, wanting to know what's going to happen. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat and if you are like me, you will be leery of ever camping again. I am looking forward to reading more of her work in the future. S.Coelho is definitely an author to watch for!
