Ink Magic

Rate this book
Some girls have tattoos, but Lucy Morgan bets none of theirs come to life. The fact that Lucy’s tattoo occasionally decides to snake up her arm means short skirts and string bikinis are out. Fashion turns out to be the least of Lucy Morgan’s worries. When she finds out her magical tattoo gives her powers that help her defend humanity from evil paranormal beings, Lucy is confused. She doesn’t know anything about killing monsters, and has no idea how to control her powers. Mostly she’s confused about her feelings for another Ink Mage, Daniel Mills. There’s something decidedly dangerous about him. Her bad boy radar is going off, and all she can think about his exotic, baby blues.

She discovers they aren’t the only Ink Mages at school. Lucy is different, however. Not only is her tattoo magical, but she herself can perform magic. Something no other Ink Mage can do. As if things couldn’t get any worse, someone is going around trying to kill Ink Mages. That person is an Ink Mage, an Ink Mage who, like Lucy, can perform spells. Daniel, like everyone else, not only thinks she might be dangerous, but also a killer. He switches between kissing her and refusing to even look at her, let alone admitting his feelings. If they survive, the pair might find love. She just has to prove her innocence first. Then she can decide if she forgives him for not trusting her in the first place.

I picked up this book for free. I'm pretty picky, even with free books, but the concept sounded right up my alley. And it is -- the concept of this book is great. The idea of a tattoo that is somehow the source of one's power, that allows/forces the person to transform to suit the need . . . I really, really like it.

Unfortunately, this book was a mess. It's pretty short, and I think that was part of the problem. It could have benefited a lot from slowing *way* down, elaborating on some of the unclear parts. I like a fast-paced story, but this one was dying for some more detailed explanation and better build-up to climactic moments.

There are too many characters with too little time to get to know them. The result was that I didn't really care about any of them, even when there was danger. Because of this, the love interest was pretty laughable. The Big Bad was equally laughable. A book can't just *tell* me that someone's good, or bad, or a jerk, or a best friend, and then expect me to go along with it. I've got a pretty good suspension of disbelief, but please please PLEASE *show* me something to make me care.

Also, I didn't understand how the main character could have this tattoo and have it not act up for such a long period in her teen years (I believe she points this out to her best friend near the beginning) . . . and yet there's all this supernatural stuff going on right under her nose?

Overall, the writing was decent enough for me to bump it from one star to two. The author has potential, and I'd like to see it properly fulfilled. This, however, doesn't do it.

The idea was there, but it wasn't completed for me. I had no connection to any of the characters. Something was lacking...I can't quite put my finger on it....but it could have been great the ink tattoo idea could've been great :/
