REVIEW OF WALKER BY AMOS LASSEN “Still even more different than his other works is “Walker”, a novelette with its roots in science fiction and fantasy. .. The story takes us all over the place as we try to get to know the characters who as paranormals are thrust into the world of science fiction.” http://www.reviewsbyamoslassen.com/?p...
This was the first Alien type story I have ever read ,and it was a fantastic start!! A really enjoyable short science fiction story that is well worth a read. Looking forward to reading more books by this author!!!!
Unique and Different. Science Fiction combined with Paranormal. Has an interesting way of keeping you wanting to know more about the characters and events.
WALKER - I got this book for free on Goodreads, if you haven’t checked out this writer’s GR page, you should do it. The short story with vampires and aliens leaves you wanting so much more to explore. Walker (Novelette) by Chad Schimke
This novella - vignette? - cunningly mixed sci-fi and fantasy fiction. It melded some general tropes in interesting ways that reminded me a bit of Dead Space and the prologue of Spin the Sky. Just a bit, though. Not too much. While some of the tropes are common, I'm not entirely certain that this hasn't been done before. I'm not well enough read in scifi to say such.
While the concepts were interesting, I wasn't too fond of the execution. The piece read a bit too much like an outline or a rough draft for my taste. While the expansion potential was very high - there's a novel, or even a series hiding in there - I had trouble getting into the style and understanding what was going on from scene to scene. The piece would benefit from a rewrite expanding the ideas and focusing more on each character.
I wanted to feel in the piece rather than an outside observer. I wanted to be more attached to each of the characters and truly understand the system that the Watchers, Walkers, and Hybrids were forced into and make sense of the social structure. There's enough to be drawn upon to make this something much bigger, and I hope that Chad Schimke realizes that and works with it.
I was contacted by author to have a look on his book and I am happy, that I could. The plot was captivating the characters caught interest. The only bad thing was, that it was too short.
Alright, to be honest it was a nice book. I loved the different breaks and didn't really seem to be chapters so to speak. Chad Schimke did a good job in keeping the story line true all the way through to the end. Well till I got to the end. The hint at vampirism in the book was a different twist on the aspect. Never quite heard it put that way. Good job Chad made me think of could that be possible on whether vampires come from alien hybrids or not. Very well indeed! It had been a while since I have had anything to do with aliens so when I first started I was a little weary but all in all it was a good short story. Like I said up until the end. I'm confused about it. Frank in the middle of the fight and then the book just ended. Wasn't really left open for anything. Did he die? Did he win? Why the sudden cut-off? I do rate the book 5 out of 5 for the friendly atmosphere of the book. It was kept simple almost and made for a really quick read. If you like aliens I would give this novella a read. It's really short shouldn't take no longer than an hour to read.
Author mixed in so many different things and did not finish a single one. It might be a good back-story for a real story. But then again... every one of those things has already been said. Roosevelt is.. well, Roosevelt. The Reds and the Greys are just like Morlocks and Eloi. OK, I can not think of a story in which alien-human hybrids are called vampires and feed on human blood and flesh, but I have encountered stories of hybrids of many many types and oh so many stories about vampires.
Since that part is so unimpressive, the rest of the story has to... wait, there is no rest of the story? That is it. Shell with no plot.
It is hard to write a novelette, much harder than a novel. The large number of pages gives the opportunity that by an accident something good will be written. Novelette does not give that space. You have to know what you are doing. Like, not this.
Walker was a strange story. I'm still not sure if I liked it or not. The beginning of the book drew me in from the start. I liked reading a book about aliens. There is one other book that I have read about aliens, but it was a YA book called Exiled by RaShelle Workman. The premise of Walker was different than anything I had ever read. I also enjoyed the vampire aspect of the book. It was almost a vampire/alien mash up.
The only thing I didn't like about the novella is that it was confusing at times. The explanations were hard for me to understand. However, that could be because I don't read a lot of science fiction. I loved how the story ended. I thought it was a crazy plot twist. I definitely wasn't expecting it.
The beginning part, about the Roswell alien crash was pretty interesting. Then the story got confusing. Apparently, the aliens can turn humans into walkers, or vampires. It is an interesting idea for a story, but the writing style had me a little confused.
Each section seems to be a jump of several years, but I had a difficult time seeing how they were related. Jumping to a new point of view and a new narrator so many times made it hard to keep the story straight in my mind. The writing seemed very clinical and emotionless to me, like I was reading a scientific report. I felt no connection to any of the characters.
This could turn into a good book, if more time is spent on the characters, so we have someone to root for.
The prose is decent (most of the time), and the story itself is inventive. But the dialogue is horrendous - flat and unbelievable, often trying to replace a narrator rather than simply being dialogue. Disjointed and awkward throughout, this is a story with potential but not style or flair.
Though I won this book through Goodreads First Reads, it was never received though I sent an e-mail asking about it. It would have been nice to get an answer at least.
