A young Baltimore boy and his brother witness the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814 that culminates in the writing of the national anthem by Francis Scott Key.
Personal Reaction- This book tells the story of our nation’s National Anthem. It is inspiring, but I am disappointed that the story does not go into more detail about the American Revolution. I would have preferred to have more of the story about the bombing of Fort McHenry.
Purpose: Read aloud to 1st to 3rd grad students for several purposes: This book would be good to read to students before starting a lesson on the American Revolution or the National Anthem. The book explains how Francis Scott Key wrote The Star-Spangled Banner while being held captive by the British. The book also contains good vocabulary such as: Militia, harbor, oysters, seizing, sneer, paced, and spyglass.
There are a few books that stand out as "new classics". I first read this in my daughters classroom when she was in elementary school. It is one I still LOVE to read with the lovely illustrations! HIGHLY recommend it!
This book is wonderful! The story line is easy to follow and a great introduction to the National Anthem for young children. A must read for all preschoolers and young elementary kids.
