Honor in Hell

Rate this book
The sequel to the highly praised HUNTING THE FIVE and Book Two of the DE LA ROCA CHRONICLES.

Can anyone be trusted?

Betrayed by both Laufeyson and the Mademoiselle, and sent on a quest by an angel that might actually be her enemy, the demon mercenary De la Roca bolts into Hell with murder in her heart.

Her simple mission for revenge quickly spirals out of control. Between the Consortium of power-hungry angels, the serpentine Oracle, a strangely absent God, and the knowledge that her mount just happens to be a man under a curse, just about everyone around her has a secret - and most of them are trying to get her killed.

Unless, of course, she can kill them first.

Awesome. The first book in this series was great. This one is even better. The author has woven together an incredibly original and fascinating world – raw, gritty, edgy. In this book, we learn of De la Roca’s past which was as edgy and original as the rest of the story. I was quickly engrossed in this world and its strangeness and will snap up book three when it comes out. Maria Violante is a fresh new voice. A favorite new author of mine.

'Honor in Hell' picks right up where 'Hunting the Five' left off. It had been a while since I read the first volume, but Violante does a good job of giving you the back story without letting the reader get bogged down in it. De La Roca is out for revenge, and what better place to find it than in Hell? The mercenary has not planned for what happens next, and soon discovers her enemies may in fact be her only allies. "Honor in Hell' lead me to new worlds, effectively using all five senses to put me right there in the action, with Bluot at my side. :) There are just a few, very minor mistakes – enough to jump right over if you aren't looking for them. I do have to say there are definitely more adverbs than I like seeing in my reading, and long sentences during the action slows it down somewhat.

Regarding the plot, you follow several different characters from the beginning on, but Violante is good at smooth transitions, making each arc easy to follow. About three-quarters of the way through the book, the characters start to come together, and several twists keep you turning the pages right up until the end. The last parts were by far worth the read, can't wait to see what's next by Violante!

3.5...I would happily have given it 4 stars if it had a freakin' ending. What's with authors writing serial novellas that don't end? Drives me nuts. It cheats the reader out of something fundamental to the reading experience. It sure as hell doesn't leave the reader with anything resembling a warm, happy feeling.

Anyhow, this book was less confusing than the first one. I was much more easily able to follow what was going on. It also pulled a lot of the threads that were left waving in a mysterious wind at the end of part one together, so that the reader can actually follow the plot. The writing was still really good and it's well edited. Too bad it's just the middle third of a book.

Sorry, I'm too busy being annoyed at having just dedicated two days to reading two novellas, without reaching any conclusion and no indication that I ever will, to bother writing anything more about this book. Why would I want to invest two days to something I'll never be able to finish? (Because there isn't a third book and by the time there is I'll have forgotten about what I read here...and refuse to read it out of spite and fear that even then I might not reach an ending.) It was waste of my time, no matter how engaging or well written it might be.

De La Roca comes back for more and she's not happy.
The second installment of the series has a great deal of action, plot twists, and betrayal, with a little side of revenge... ok a big side of revenge.
A few new characters make their presence known and all the classics like Laufeyson, the mademouiselle, and Alsvior grow into well defined players. While most of the characters are driven by loves lost, Laufeyson takes to the forefront in this matter. He has a tangible need to set things right, though he may not take the best course action.
I suggest everyone gets a hold of this series. You will want to read it many times over.

Hang onto your hats because the second book takes off with a twist I sure didn't see coming! Betrayed by those she trusted, learning that her previous kills were not all that they seemed, her horse is not even what she thought...toss in angels bent on power, a unique oracle, secrets in abundance and oh, everyone wanting to kill her... all that makes for a really great read!!!
