1817 England: On the hunt for suitable husbands, Annabelle and Elizabeth encounter an infamous Duke fighting to protect his famous best friend from an army of eligible daughters.
Annabelle has few prospects for marriage until a famous hero of the Napoleonic wars returns in search of a wife. It seems all London descends on her quiet town to compete for the handsome lord, but a dangerous duke is out to prevent any marriage that might harm his dear, troubled friend.
This is technically a DNF but I skimmed to the back to confirm, yep I still hate her.
I had read the sample and thought her 'young' and potentially annoying but decided to read anyway since I hoped she would improve throughout the book. Besides there was one other 5 star review so I was swayed.
Swayed I shouldn't have been. I vehemently disliked Annabelle. Call it personal preference but I hate a heroine with a penchant for lying. We're not talking about a hard-done-by heroine needing to use her wiles and cunning to get out of tough situations or a scheming villianess which is interesting in her own right, this is a heroine where little white lies and big fat lies just roll off her tongue to get what she wants and where she wants. Urgh.
She's a liar, competitive, rude, bossy, manipulative, whiny, haughty and snobby. I found nothing to like and threw in the towel about 25% through with a quick skim at the end. Really, I couldn't care less.
Story involves her scheming to bag an Earl, Charles, whom is the best prospect around in their little country village. The duke (don't remember his name as he's always refered to as 'the Duke') is Charle's friend and comes to stay with him and and tries to convince Charles that Annabelle is a very poor choice of wife. The Duke later acts as a distraction and somehow they end up rooting each other while trying to preserve Annabelle's virginity. Despite this, Annabelle is still under the illusion that Charles is in love with her and that will eventually marry, ditching the Duke. Honestly this woman is bat-shit crazy.
I debated whether to give this 2 stars as the writing isn't bad and I usually reserve the 1 star rating for the double-whammy combo of shit writing and story but I decided to give this that as warning to others. If a likeable lead character(s) is important to you, run far, far away.
Rating: 1 personality transplant needed. Re-readability: Forget the money, I want my time back.
A charming, witty novel that uses satire to reach truths about friendship, innocence, and love, "Annabelle" parodies tropes of Regency romance without becoming a parody itself. I enjoyed it immensely.
Quirky characters and storylines. Never quite certain of the characters' motives or how their stories will end. Complex personalities and surprising events will make the reader curious enough to want to finish the book. An enjoyable read nonetheless.
