The Family Business

The Family Business was like reading a gangster print version of the Huxtables meet The Sopranos. I'm not one for giving review like summaries, no one's paying me and that's what Goodreads and Amazon is for. I'm hear to help you determine if it's worth reading/purchasing, because I see that's lacking on these sites. Honestly, I didn't think Weber had it in him. Every once in a while I'll read something hood-gangster like, but not as much as I used to because regardless of author,as the genre is repetitive. I didn't expect much, but I did get entertained. If you like Sex, Violence, plot twists, & saying WTF a lot, this it for you. If you buy, you won't consider it a waste. Will you receive enlightenment and look at society in a different way? Are there some predicable parts, yes, but the authors make up for it in the end. Of course not! This title is fast moving, but I never had to back up to keep up, if you know what I mean. Critics might find fault with the character development, which is present, but it leaves a few questions about certain motivations, but as you progress through the novel, you understand why as I believe this is beginning of a series. This Jerry Springerlike HoodRich crime family had me intrigued and tickled, and I think you might at the very least entertaining. Fans of Wahida Clark, Nikki Turner, the like may find it a tad tame, but overall I throughly entertained.

This book started off a bit slow. For the first 100 pages I was saying to myself will this get any better, or will I have to put it down. The beginning was all about the legal side of the family business, and while commendable, the part of the story was just uninteresting. Now when we got to the dirty side of the business the story did a complete 180 and became a definite page turner. I thought the storyline was fast paced, had many twist and turns, and keep me thinking about where the story was going next. I cannot wait to read the sequel.

Well I will not be buying the follow up for this book. I am absolutely disappointed. I am really just at a loss for this story, I am not sure if it was the unrealistic story line... the amount of sex scenes (It almost came off as soft porn) or the story line jumping around like crazy!!! What happened with the follow up on the congressman's son? What did the Mexicans do after the father was finished grieving? This book was a disaster in my opinion and if it was a returnable product I would surely be waiting in line to return it. I hope the next Carl Weber book is a knockout, I'm still a fan, just not of this.

I really liked this one. Given to me by a friend of mine that said the tv series was really good and he thought I would like the book. Well it was great. I give it 4 ⭐️but will go up to 4.5. Action packed mob story that left me wanting to rush out and get the next one.

First off I want to say I enjoyed this book it definitely kept my interest throughout. However it definitely did not have the FEEL of a Carl Webber story! Then I realize he had a Co-Author. And he most likely wrote this book. Once I wrapped my head around that I was able to just enjoy the book. I will definitely seek out book 2 in the series and I see already that it's another Co- author with Carl Webber... So I'm ready!

This series is pretty Ok at times pretty good at other times. My issues with this series is too many POVs and too many different writers within the series which changes the dynamics in the writing 🤷🏽♀️….And these are still my issues with this story

I loved it ! Although I do agree with another persons reviews the characters were not like-able at all. I did like junior though, I'd like to read a little bit in depth with his personal life in part 2 of this series.

The Family Business by Carl Weber with Eric Pete, where do I start… First, if you have read my previous reviews you know I have a Love/Hate relationship with Weber’s books. I think I will toss this one into the “hate” column. Not because it was an awful book, but as a matter of principle. The Family Business came highly recommended to me by a friend who said it was a really great read. I’m sure to those who love Street/Urban Lit; it is all that and then some. For me, I just felt duped, like someone played a really bad joke on me.
The Family Business is billed as a story about a successful family business, Duncan Motor Company. The story starts out with the family patriarch, LC Duncan, calling a family meeting to discuss transitioning control of the business to one of his sons. From this point on the story takes a bad turn and never really corrects itself. There is scene after scene of pointless sex that seemed to only serve as page-filler, the murder of a councilman’s son takes place early in the book and just fades away and seemed to have no relevance to the story, and none of the characters are believable or that interesting. Midway through the book, there is a dramatic shift in both the plot and penmanship. I believe Weber wrote the first half, and Pete the second. Whatever the case, the writer’s flipped the script and the readers land smack dab in your typical wannabe, but too far-fetched to believe black mafia family saga. Sigh.
In typical Weber fashion, the story is fast-paced and contains drama on every page. Because there is so much focus on “bringing the drama” the story often reads as if it is being made-up as the writers went along, leaving this reader shaking her head. Although the real family business explains some of the questionable writing in the first half of the book; it does not save it. There are just too many missing details to give the story credibility, which is the problem I have with most books of this nature.
I’m not sure what the goal was or who thought this was a good idea, but in my view it was not a good look. My rating for The Family Business is 2.5 stars.

December 12, 2012The Family Business and I started off on the wrong foot and it just went down hill from there. The first chapter introduces you to the youngest member of the Duncan Family, Paris. And she was annoying as a toddler throwing a fit in the middle of Walmart. Really, she was just one huge giant ghetto stereotype. Then Weber and Pete introduces you to the other members of the family and while they are not as bad as her. They are uninteresting and really hard to connect to. By the time I got to Chapter 3, which I believe was narrated by London (the oldest sister), I knew that I would not care what happened to anyone in the story.
One of the things that sometimes saves books from bad characters is good writing. The only word that I can think of to describe the writing style in this book is basic. The sentence structure had no depth and there was no style. Nothing to keep me wanting to turn the page. Combine that with the fact that Pete and Weber decided to write in the first person point of view, and it was a complete fail.
This is not my first time reading Carl Weber (but I stopped a long time ago) and Eric Pete is new to me. I don't think I will be reading anything but either of them any time soon.

nteresting Line: Never pull out your gun unless you plan on using it
The Family Business by Carl Weber what can I say I usually like Carl Weber novels but this one did not hold my attention the way that most of his books do. I do not know if it is because he is co- writing with another author or what but it did not work for me. All of the characters were unlikable there wasn't anyone that I liked or even cared for. The women were portrayed as sluts and hoes with no growth or change at all. The story was very predictable I knew what was going to happen after the first couple of chapters. The funny thing was there was a lot going on but nothing really happening.Now don't get me wrong Carl Weber is an awesome author and has written several great books (So you call yourself a man, something on the side, married men) full of suspense twist and turns and great story lines I am just sorry to say this isn't one of them.

" The Family Business" by Carl Weber...wow, where do I begin. This is the story of The Duncan Family. It's head, L.C and wife, Chippy. Orlando, Vegas, London, Rico,and Paris make up their children. On the outside, everything appears calm. But in reality, they each hold thier own serets. Secrets that could threaten to tear the family apart if they ever came to light. They all have a special talent or skill when it comes to running Duncan Motors, the family business. But even that is not what it appears to be!
The Family Business was a great read. I loved how the diffrent point of views were covered. There were so many twists and turns. This is Carl's most edgiest book to date and I loved it. There was a little bit of everything in this book. Action, suspense, comedy, the works! I would love to see this book adapted for the big screen and cannot wait for " Extended Family". Great read.

Like with all of Carl Weber's books this one did not disappoint. The Duncan's were a family who owned a business with a side hustle. Each family member played an integral role in keeping the family business afloat. Secrets are released and lines are crossed but this family always has each others backs.

Chapters book club member: It took me awhile to get into this book. I’m not a fan of urban, gangster, ghetto fabulous fiction, but by the 20th chapter I wanted to see how it would end. Paris’ character (a whorish, spoiled mercenary) was over the top and I wouldn’t have been upset if she had been killed off. LC was all about the family business, even if it cost the life of his own flesh and blood and Harris’ character just plain got on my nerves. The story moved along, without really going anywhere. None of the characters were redeemable, which may have been intentional on the part of the author, but one book was enough for me; I won’t be reading the sequels. Btw, I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them.

Not Your Average Family
I haven't read a Carl Weber novel in a few years and I have never read anything by Eric Pete. I am not sure who the dominate voice is. I will say the first half read very different from the second half. The second half of book is a typical hood book. There were characters and scenes that were useless and when the full scope of the novel is revealed, even less made sense. The family was underdeveloped, didn't really get the gist of who they were and by end of book, what you thought you knew was totally flipped. It’s written as if they’re not sure what genre they were shooting for as it does a 360 in the middle.
I have never had spoilers in my reviews and won’t start now, so this will be kind of vague. The kids seem superficial. Paris the youngest child was a party girl then switched to be the family savior. No, that didn't work well with me. Her Twin brother Rio used as a family pawn who does that? Jr, the only child not named after a city, was very limited in the story. London, the oldest daughter and forth in order, flip flopped between being strong independent to a damsel in distress. Harris is London's husband and family lawyer and thinks he is the most vital member of the family. Vegas, the next to oldest son, is the one everyone assumes will run the family one day. Seemed to be away on family business and as such was mentioned a lot but made no impact in book. The explanation for his absence didn't match the flow of book as was it portrayed rending him a useless character. Last but not least, Orlando seemed to have all in order but was a big kid with money. I wanted to see more from the mother, Chippy. Again her part in the story was way too vague and I was left feeling like “who is this woman?”
With the questions asked in the back of the book it tends to lead that there will be a part two and they tend to address some of the open ends. I am undecided if I will continue to read. I’d like to hear more of Vegas’ story. Wide open paternities and a few unanswered questions may lead me to give it one more try.

Bloodline
The Duncan’s name carry a lot of weight. As a respected businessman, L.C. has been able to build up his empire and with six grown children, now is the perfect time for him to step down. Or at least that’s what his children believe. Somewhere the Duncan’s have become vulnerable and ripe for the picking. As the patriarch of the family, it’s L.C.’s job to locate that threat and eliminate it before it can cause any destruction to his family.
Orlando is now the head of the Duncan family. While he wasn’t the family’s obvious choice, Vegas, is indisposed and until his return, Orlando is the one in charge. Or is he? Soon Orlando realizes that his life needs to be all family all the time. Is he truly prepared for what being a leader in the Duncan family entails?
Secrets have a way of unfolding and catching you in a hornet’s nest. For Harris, L.C.’s right hand man and son-in-law, he finds himself having to make a very difficult decision. Either way, he could be jeopardizing more than just business. Can he find a happy medium for everyone?
When business gets messy, the Duncan’s have to figure out a plan to hash out details with an old acquaintance. As suspicion and doubt are cast, it’s time for the Duncan’s to prove that they have what it takes to maintain. Are they willing to unite as a family in order to do so?
“The Family Business” by Carl Weber and Eric Pete had the potential to be so much more! I mean you could literally see the potential in flashes and you wanted to reach in the book and yank it out, but with so much stacked against it, the book was destined to fail. There is no true introduction to the characters. You’re thrown into a story that transforms into a different story. So much is being said, but nothing is being explained. The timeline is muddled. The characters are contradicting. And after each page I found that I was asking myself ‘why?’ “The Family Business” was not concluded in this episode and readers will have to return to see what happens next.

Whose to blame?
I will not place this solely at Eric Pete's feet simply because Carl's books have been hit or miss lately on his own so let's be fair.
I started this book looking forward to reading about a legitimate black family only to get some mediocre street lit. The Duncan's with LC at the helm has to be the dumbest family that I have ever met. I'm not street myself, but even I knew what was going on with the stolen car before it even got to that point. I was looking for something explosive from such talented authors. I think that the book should've stayed on course with the first impression of who the Duncan's were.
The players who all had a hand in what was going on were so obvious. I'm still having a hard time believing that Carl and Eric thought this book was a well written masterpiece like previous works they've done solo. I wanted to kill Paris myself, I mean who was she supposed to be Foxy Brown, the spoiled brat or one of the characters that Angelina Jolie plays in the movies? She was all over the place. I guess that tender moment with her and Daddy LC at the warehouse was supposed to do what for the readers? Show us how bad LC was or how stupid? Let me not even get started on LC sending Rio to LA to be placed in the hands of a killer. What real father would do that to his child even if he wasn't in their life? London was written nicely until it came to a certain point in the book and then she became another Paris right before my eyes. Harris had issues beyond what the book could cover starting with his identity. Orlando was an OK character. Vegas could've been omitted for obvious reasons. Chippy had a nice part, but she needed some development besides being the mother of the Duncan kids, who was she? Jr was another one that had me scratching my head. I loved Rio, but his parts seemed lacking for who he was. There's so much more that I would love to say, but to prevent spoilers I won't.
I can't say that I'm looking forward to part two unless these two talented authors bring it the way I know they can.

Interesting Read!
I know I'm late to reading the Family Business by Carl Weber. The Family Business is a good read. Carl Weber did a good job. I have learned a lot in this book. I enjoyed reading Carl Weber's work. It's well written and more confident.
I don't want to spoil this book because I want another readers to get their chance to read this book. I'm looking forward to read part 2 of The Family Business.

This book was a good Beach read. It would not win a Pulitzer butnit was good enough to keep my attention for a while. The characters were predictable and the story was a combination of themes from various TV shows. I should say bad TV shows. I'm glad I got it from the library.

I️ decided to try a new Author, and boy am I️ glad I️ did. I️ couldn’t put my book down when I️ started reading it. I️ was on a cruise and couldn’t wait to get home to start the next one. I’m so very happy I️ tried someone new.

3.5 star rating......Can't say this was a bad read it actually kept you turning the pages......Just wasn't a Carl Weber read.....with that being said I am looking forward to part 2.......

Strictly a page turner! I couldn't put it down. When I wasn't reading I was romancing my hubby! Mr. Weber will take you there! This is an excellent read!

This book was off the chain. I can't believe all the twists it had that I was not ready for. I can't wait to read the next book. Carl Weber great job. I would highly recommend this book.

This book made me laugh out loud probably at the most inappropriate times like the Congressman's son funeral. Paris was ridiculous dressed up like the widow kissing the corpse. What I didn't like was that the most likable characters besides Rio that is, the congressman son (can't remember his name at all) and Miguel were killed. That "insert curse word," was crazy! Poor Miguel. It was utterly stupid that with virtually no evidence LT assumed the "Mexicans," were the culprits. After all Alejandro gave him his word! I could go on and on but I will stop here and I have no plans to find out who's Paris's baby daddy!

Went into this with no expectations so was pleasantly surprised at what a great story it turned out to be. A bit slow at the beginning, laying out the cast of characters in the Duncan family, but once the action started, it kept you on the edge of your seat. Interesting twists and turns, along with a big bang at the end were big pluses for me! And what exactly is the family business?? Read and find out! 7 out of 10.

Entertaining in the same regard as a Jackie Collins or Sidney Sheldon story. This story falls apart when logical is applied but its a fine book to mentally checkout with. The stereotypes, overt sex scenes, and the cliches were schlocky and amusing. Nonsensical and chaotic— poorly structured yet put together well. Not a redeemable or likable character in 370 pages but each distinct personality and their melodramas were fun to read about— my biggest problem is that there’s no one to root for, they're all so terrible they sort of deserve what's happening to them. I don’t know if I’ll stick with the six book series but I may pick up the sequel.

I didn’t love it and I didn’t hate it, and I didn’t really care for any of the main characters. But I’ve already bought the rest in the series so I’ll see how I feel after I delve a little further into the next books.
