Applied Anatomy & Physiology for Manual Therapists
Applied Anatomy and Physiology for Manual Therapists is a clear, accurate, simple, and comprehensive A&P textbook that addresses the needs of students in manual therapy education programs. It is a focused text that deliberately emphasizes the information manual therapists need to be familiar with in order to understand the benefits, effects, indications, and contraindications of their specific form of manual therapy. The text includes detailed information not covered in standard A&P texts, adding an entire chapter on neuromuscular and myofascial connections (Chapter 8), and separating the structure and function of the lymphatic system (Chapter 11) from immunity and healing (Chapter 12). This, along with chapter features such as Manual Therapy Applications, Pathology Alerts, and What Do You Think questions, help readers build bridges between the scientific facts and the application of that information to their therapeutic practice.

If you've ever wanted to know how your body works at a semi-technical level, this is a really good place to start. The text is clear and accessible, and more often than not the critical details are represented in the illustrations. In most chapters, it's possible to review the key points just by going through and studying the pictures. An exceptionally well-constructed textbook, and I'm glad I had it.

Fantastic book. I started reading August 2023 and finished last month August 2024; it took 1 year. We all know so little about our own bodies and I’ll have this as one of my reference books on my desk (besides Khan Academy online and YouTube - "CrashCourse") for going back to basics (even MDs forget about body-life-living sometimes IMHO).
Pat Archer’s Applied Anatomy & Physiology for Manual Therapists is a comprehensive and accessible guide tailored for students and practitioners in massage therapy, physical therapy, and other bodywork disciplines. This book stands out for its clear explanations, well-organized structure, and strong emphasis on practical application.
Content & Structure
The book provides a thorough foundation in human anatomy and physiology, covering essential topics such as the musculoskeletal, nervous, cardiovascular, and lymphatic systems. Archer takes a highly interactive approach by integrating clinical examples, case studies, and self-assessment questions that encourage active learning. The illustrations and diagrams are particularly effective, making complex concepts easier to grasp.
Strengths
1. Practical Focus – The content is directly relevant to manual therapists, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice.
2. Engaging Visuals – High-quality illustrations and charts enhance comprehension and retention.
3. User-Friendly Layout – The book is structured in a logical, progressive manner, making it easy to navigate and reference.
4. Case Studies & Exercises – Real-world scenarios help reinforce learning and critical thinking skills.
Who Should Read It?
This book is an excellent resource for massage therapy students, physical therapists, chiropractors, and other manual therapy professionals. It is also useful for anyone interested in understanding the human body's mechanics in relation to hands-on healing.
Final Thoughts
Applied Anatomy & Physiology for Manual Therapists is an invaluable resource that blends scientific depth with practical application. Whether you are a student looking to solidify your understanding or a professional seeking a reliable reference, this book is a must-have. Highly recommended!

I read the 2021 edition. Since the renewed discovery of the interstitium, it is important to read texts published after 2018.
This is an excellent text to learn and understand anatomy and physiology. The information is delivered with a big picture first then details dovetailed into well-illustrated and defined explanations. For example, sliding filament theory has linkage to the Krebs cycle thus completing the why-and-wherefore.
Moreover, the text was in-step with current practices, so that the ICE protocol was mentioned but the MEAT protocol explained with current understanding of why ICE has been set aside.
Pathology is the only area covered thinly.
