"Your German Shepherd Puppy Month-by-Month" provides readers with everything they need to know and do at each stage of development to make sure their playful, energetic puppy grows into a happy, healthy, and well-adjusted companion. Expert authors Liz Palika, vet Deb Eldredge, and breeder Joanne Olivier team up to cover all the questions new owners tend to have and many they don't think to ask, including: What to ask the breeder before bringing your puppy home. Which vaccinations your puppy needs and when to get them. How to make potty training as smooth (and quick) as possible. What do to when your puppy cries at night. Why and how to crate train your puppy. When socialization should happen and how to make sure it does. When your puppy is ready to learn basic commands-like Sit, Stay, and Come-and the best way to teach them. When and how to go about leash training. How much exercise your puppy needs to stay physically and mentally healthy. What, how much, and when to feed your puppy to give him the nutrition he needs without the extra weight he doesn't. When your puppy is ready for obedience training and how to make sure it works. How and how often to bath your puppy, brush his coat, clip his nails, and brush his teeth. How to know what requires a trip to the vet and what doesn't. What causes problem behaviors, when to expect them, and how to correct them.
Hands down the best guide to having a German Shepherd puppy that I’ve found. THIS BOOK SAVED MY SANITY!!!! I got my first puppy a year ago and had NO idea what I was doing (though, at the time, I believed I did). This book walks you through the changes that your German Shepherd goes through month by month and gives tips and tricks and things to watch out for. I recommend this book to brand new puppy owners and even experienced ones. I’ve brought the things I’ve learned and helped others as well. My puppy and I are happy and educated thanks to this book.
I found this book to be a great resource for knowing a general guidelines on when age developments would occur. My current GSD isn't my first but, it had been quite awhile since I raised a puppy. I read the entire book and then went back and read month by month when she was going through that age. I would highly recommend this book to both experienced and new owners.
A must have for anyone with a German Shepherd puppy. I only wish I'd've read it before getting my baby. But now I have read the whole thing I can go back and reference chapters as she grows. Its very breed specific and extremely detailed to the point of near tediousness which (especially for first time gsd owners) is necessary. I will be reading this again!
I got this book to help me understand the German Shepherd puppy I just received as a Christmas gift from my husband, and it definitely fits the bill. I love how it tells you what to expect month by month, and because of that, I will keep this book handy and periodically re-reading sections as my puppy grows. Definitely a good reference for a first time GSD owner.
I have purchased and read a lot of dog books in my life from training, breed specific, or general 101, ect. but this is by far the best one I’ve ever read! I would recommend purchasing this book before you pick up your German Shepherd puppy since there are helpful chapters on how to prepare and what to expect. I will be referencing this a lot as my puppy grows, so I purchased the paperback instead of the ebook for easy flipping and better views of the charts. I wish I had purchased the Golden Retriever version of this book while my other dog was still a puppy. 5 stars!
A straight forward instructional manual for owning a German Shepherd. The book includes how your GSD matures month by month, from bringing your puppy home, to 12 months. The book also explains how to deal with house training, other types of training, nutrition, grooming, socialisation, health, vet visits etc.
Love this book! A must have for the GSD owner or potential owner. Helps you understand what you are getting into - the only thing they could have emphasized more is the BITING!!!! And practical solutions for biting besides throwing them a toy. But this book gives you a complete overview of the dog's growth and persona through time.
This book really helped me deal with my dog's puppyhood. The most important lesson being that his behavior in adolescence was normal and would eventually pass. It gave pointers on how to deal with unwanted behaviors and how to support healthy physical and behavioral development. I would've been lost without it!
I'm an avid listener of Liz's podcast (with Kate and Petra) and really wanted to check out her books. As expected, this was a fantastic book that communicated really well how to communicate with your pup. I think this would be an awesome book for anyone to read before getting any type of puppy. 90% of the book can be applied to all pups, not just German Shepherds. I love Liz's training style and look forward to using this book one day in the future!
This book makes so many assumptions that the material is nearly useless to any reader I know. It assumes an upper-middle class lifestyle, for one, and a purebred dog, which is rare these days. It also has some blatantly silly dog-rearing advice, such as using long sentences for commands. The style is easy and clear, though, and the content well-curated.
At times, it felt like my GSD puppy was created in the depths of hell and sent to live with me but this book assured me his behavior was perfectly normal. Very helpful guide for those new to GSD puppies.
Excellent source. Lets you know what to expect from your GSD each month and it’s been right on the money with Harry. Nutrition, grooming, training, and what behaviors to expect at each month and how to deal with them are discussed. Must have for all Shep pup owners.
