Angels’ Pawn- 5 stars
I’ve read plenty of short stories and now after reading Singh’s novella, Angels’ Pawn has become of my favourites.
This time we get a closer look at Ashwini, Elena’s Guild Hunter colleague. Ash possesses similar characteristics as Elena – She’s smart, tough, and can kick some serious ass. But she also has her own Guild Hunter “talent”, or a curse, in her opinion. She can hear the thoughts and emotions of others through a single touch. A talent that is unique, but debilitating when the person who touches her is an angel like Nazarach who has seen and felt centuries of pain and terror.
Singh introduces an enigma in the form of a hot vampire named Janvier. Ash has hunted Janvier in the past, but this time he stands by her side for her new Guild assignment.
In Angels’ Pawn, Singh focuses on the action rather than the romance. But make no mistake, the chemistry is there. I can’t wait to hear more of Ash and Janvier in future books. The world that Singh creates is terrifying and riveting, making me wish there were more stories set in this world to devour.
Ash is a compelling character and with Janvier’s moss green eyes sparkling with interest, I think Ash may have to reconsider her no-dating-suckers rule.
Angels’ Judgement - 5 stars
I have absolutely fallen in love with the world that Singh has built where vampires, angels, and humans co-exist. Though it’s beautiful, it’s also dangerous as hell.
Angel’s Judgement is the story of Sara Haziz, another hunter-born Guild Hunter who later becomes the Guild Director for America. But before she takes her rightful spot behind the Director desk, Sara is set on a mission to end a hunter who is on a vampire killing spree. But this time, she isn’t alone.
A sexy – and I mean really, really sexy – man named Deacon is there to help her. Sara is suspicious to find this towering and dangerously seductive man with her. But when she calls in to verify his Guild Hunter status, Simon the former Guild Director says that Deacon is there for a mission and to offer her protection from any Archangel threats. Because she is the most likely candidate for the Guild Director position, the Cadre of Archangels want to make sure she is capable enough to withstand their wrath. And also to prove that they are powerful and above all else.
The action is gritty and I loved every moment of it. There is more investigating in this novella than in Angel’s Pawn, but that’s because Sara uses knowledge to her advantage. Her mind is her weapon, along with her crossbow made by the hands of her lover.
Speaking of her lover, Deacon is so freaking amazing! I love his personality. He does his job well, but he can also be light and funny. I love the control he is able to manage. But when he loses control, as Sara said, he loses control.
Again, Singh writes what I would call a perfect novella. She has included action, danger, blood and romance. But I would love to read more about the love scenes between Deacon and Sara. What? I’m human! Sue me.
Favourite Quote:
Sara smiled, knowing her face was a blotchy mess. “Can you see him in a tux?” Her stomach tightened at the idea.
“Let me get the visual. Okay, I have it.” Elena sighed. “Oh, baby, I could lick him up in a tux.”
“Hey. Mine.” It was a growl.
Ellie grinned. “I have a pulse. He’s hot.
Angel’s Wolf – 4 stars
He is a battered, broken vampire.
She is a lethal, misunderstood angel.
But together, Noel and Nimra are more than just a broken body and a deadly blade.
I am truly baffled at how Singh is able to bring back shattered souls to life. She just doesn’t give them back their wings, but she lets each of her characters soar.
We first meet Noel back in Archangel’s Kiss where he is tortured and abused until he hangs on to the barest thread of life. In the Refuge, he recovers and finally, Raphael sends him to Nimra’s court in New Orleans to help her find an assassin within her territory.
Again, Singh juxtaposes elegant words with tortured characters while weaving intricate plotlines. I really don’t know how she manages this all. She’s simply a genius.
I loved that we were able to peel back the layers and see Nimra in a completely different light. While Singh doesn’t completely disregard Nimra’s uncanny powers, she also sheds light on a softer, more loving side of the feared angel.
Similarly, Singh showcases the Noel we didn’t know before the incident that hurt him. We see his arrogance, his strength and most of all, his love as he unravels his feelings for an angel.
Angels’ Dance – 5 stars
Readers have had glimpses of Galen and Jessamy throughout the series, but in this long novella, they both shine in the spotlight.
First off, I have no idea that Galen would be so sexy. Though he was an interesting character, he wasn’t my favourite of the Seven; that honor would go to Illium. However, reading this novella has changed my mind. There is so much more to the red-headed angel.
I loved Galen’s fierce loyalty and protectiveness over Jessamy. Though she is a fragile angel, she still has a strong heart and I thought that they matched each other perfectly.
Singh piles on the sexual tension in spades and I can truly say she is one of those authors who seem to accomplish this with ease. Again, the writing is exquisite as Singh sketches out scenes that feel more like a portrait because of its lush descriptions and vibrant characters.
In a sea of books about angels, Singh’s Guild Hunter series is a shining gem that will captivate you like no other. Readers will be thrilled to add this compilation to their keeper shelves.
