In a dramatic rendition of the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus, author Randy Alcorn and artist Javier Saltares take readers into the realm of first-century Jerusalem and then two very different eternal realms. Eternity is a graphic novel.
Randy Alcorn is the founder of Eternal Perspective Ministries (EPM), a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching biblical truth and drawing attention to the needy and how to help them. Rating: 5 stars Beautiful art and amazing story telling and character development, takes the tale of Lazarus and The Rich Man to a new level. Author Randy Alcorn fleshes out Lazarus and The Rich Man, and takes us deep into the narrative and its setting. Artist and illustrator Javier Saltares does the rest and thrills the eyes and imagination. Supporting characters and the historical elements of time and place, Jewish culture, along with visuals of Paradise and Hades, and the surprise inclusion of Yeshua/Jesus as a featured character and not just the Rabbi teacher telling this story. After all, this is not a parable and so Yeshua/Jesus should be included. Of course.
Next, I appreciated the Hebraic references to the Tanakh (Bible, Old Testament), particularly the book of Yeshayahu (Isaiah) and the coming of Yeshua/Jesus. Very bold and enlightening.
I loved every moment, every chapter and every aspect of this gorgeous graphic novel. I can't recommend this one enough. It is a gorgeous visual and literary masterpiece.
Eternity by Randy Alcorn is a new graphic novel and is the story about Lazarus and the Rich man a very well known story in the Bible but for those of you who don't know the story Randy Alcorn and the Artist Javier Saltares have written and beautifully illustrated this novel for you. It is a great way to read about and view the story as it unfolds. I really enjoyed it and if it helps spread the word of God I'm all for it. You want be disappointed he also has a section at the end of the novel about some questions you may have and if you enjoyed this novel it has some other books also written by Randy,Since I have now read and enjoyed this Christian comic from Kingstone Comics I will now pass it on to others who will also benefit from the story and the graphic novel. Thanks for the opportunity to read and view this novel. I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
Una interesante historia basada en Lázaro y el rico, de la Biblia. Me gustó especialmente cómo cuidaron el detalle de ubicar los escenarios en el contexto histórico adecuado.
"...a dramatic work of art that carries the salvation message to an unbelieving generation in words and artistry that can’t be ignored..."
New York Times best-selling author, Randy Alcorn released his first Bible based graphic novel in June with the largest publisher of Christian themed comics—Kingstone Media. The graphic novel titled Eternity depicts the classic Bible story of Phineas the Rich Man and Lazarus the beggar. The underlying theme reveals earthly choices carry eternal consequences. Alcorn uses literary license to add “fictional details and dialogue” yet he writes, the added details are “…supported by other scriptures.”
Javier Saltares creative artistry portrays imageries of first century Jerusalem, warrior angels, Christ’s death, resurrection, heavens opulent vistas and frightening images of hell with realism. I especially liked his caricature of the Archangel Michael, the commander of Heaven’s army who isn’t allowed to rescue Christ from the cross, held back by obedience to his Master’s Word.
Stunning imagery enhances Alcorn’s words to represent the reality of heaven, hell and the “great fixed chasm” that separates the two. Themes of repentance, life after death, eternity and decisions that affect them weave throughout the story. Appropriately illustrated by the Rich Man’s question to Father Abraham after he dies, “Do you not hear my regret?”
“You regret, but you do not repent,” said Father Abraham. “Indeed you cannot, for your condition became permanent the moment you died.” The simplicity of the message brings tears for what the Rich Man has lost…Full Review: www.examiner.com/list/eternity-a-grap...
Even if you have never read a graphic novel (comic book) before, as was the case for me, you will want to read this one. Randy Alcorn retells Jesus’ parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus by putting names and faces to the characters (see Luke 16:19-31).
Randy Alcorn portrays the pride and selfishness of the Rich Man and the humility of Lazarus, who is a beggar outside the Rich Man’s house. When Jesus comes through town, healing and teaching, Lazarus has a very personal encounter with Jesus.
Both men die and the difference in their funerals was as striking as the difference in their lives. Moreover, their eternal fates are equally different.
This is a profound presentation of some of the most important truths in the Bible. It will touch your heart. More importantly, it would be an easy thing to hand to someone who doesn’t know Jesus because the realities of choosing Jesus or not are depicted in clear ways that aren’t preachy or threatening. It’s an easy-to-read story that will make people think about what life is really all about and force them to confront the realities of an afterlife.
Eternity is a graphic novel suitable for children and adults. Get it for yourself. Get it for your kids. Get copies for your friends and neighbors who need to hear the message of Christ.
I give Randy Alcorn’s Eternity five cups of love.
This review first appeared on my blog, ChristyBower.com.
Jesus used a story about a rich man and a beggar to teach his followers about Heaven and Hell. But their differences go much deeper than the externals. One is rich in earthly wealth, but his soul is spiritually destitute. The beggar loves others and God.
Their lives after death are radically opposite to their lives on Earth.
These illustrations are rich, dramatic, striking, full of color and intense action on par with what one would expect to find in modern comics. The storyline is simple and engaging, fleshing out this story from the lips of Jesus. Hell is “watered down” a bit for younger eyes, with flames and torment more suggested than shown. Heaven is clearly shown for the paradise that it is.
The good news of Jesus Christ coming to Earth to die on the cross for the sins of mankind is clearly illustrated and explained in the pages of this novel. There’s also a glimpse of what may be happening all around us in the spiritual realm.
When I saw that Randy Alcorn, one of my favorite authors, was branching into graphic novels, I asked Kingstone Comics if I could have a copy to review and they generously complied.
This is an amazing book! It presents the Gospel in such a unique and remarkable way, telling a story set during the time of Jesus and based around His parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man. The illustrations are amazing, as are the characters and the plot, all of which make for a truly epic read! Extremely recommended!
I really enjoyed this comic book depiction of a Bible story I had heard, and read, for years. It was good to have it brought to life through the artwork. The fictionalization made the story very real.
I rated eternity 5 stars because it is based on biblical truth and the depictions/illustrations were executed flawlessly. This will truly help anyone with their walk with Jesus.
I've read this story many times in the Bible. But now knowing it's a graphic novel I guarentee many more will wanna read ir. Great work Mr. Alcorn and Mr. Saltares. God Bless.
A fresh presentation of the gospel through a creative retelling of Lazarus's parable. The power of the gospel brought me to tears on a couple of sections.
Read for my February recommendation from a friend- David Dicks. An enjoyable presentation of a section of scripture. Presented in a way kids can connect with. I liked thinking about the characters personalities and how they may have interacted with one another
This graphic novel tells the story of the rich man and Lazarus and their destinies. The story is embellished greatly from the biblical account, portraying the rich man as one of the most wicked, evil men of his time and Lazarus as a very pious, God-fearing man who writes Bible verses on the wall of the rich man's property. It clearly shows a contrast between people who fear God and people who hate God. It is also the story of a third peron who serves as a servant to the rich man and gets to know the lives of the two other men. The story of Jesus Christ is also contained in this story and all of the main characters have at least one encounter with Christ. What I did not like so much about the book were some of the drawings, especially those of angels, who are portrayed like modern day action heroes from comics. The story contains many important biblical truths about salvation and eternity, but I believe also too much speculation about the realities of life after death.
Lopputulos on vähän liian tunnustuksellinen minun makuuni. Etenkin lopussa sarjakuva sortuu saarnaamaan, antamatta lukijan itse sulatella näkemäänsä ja lukemaansa. Ei tämä silti hassumpi julkaisu omassa lajissaan ole!
I love Randy Alcorns books but I'm sorry to say that this was not my favorite of his. To me it read a little too much like a giant tract. I should disclose that I've never been what you would call a comic book or graphic novel guy so that probably has something to do with my low rating. Perhaps if you are into that genre you will appreciate it more than I did. On the plus side, the artwork is outstanding. In addition, as it always is with Alcorns books, the overall message behind the story is dead on.
