The Four Brothers of God are back! Quincy, Chauncey, Jamal, and Will have become inseparable as a result of last year's men's retreat, but will the very same event that brought them together be the event that drives them apart? Quincy and Karen have come a long way since the affairs that nearly cost their marriage, but will their daughter's sudden departure from school drive their marriage to the brink? Chauncey is determined to find a wife, but his exploration of online dating and the social networks just might lead him astray. Chantel and Jamal have postponed their wedding to enroll in premarital counseling, but as old issues resurface, they are questioning whether they have made the right decision. Finally, Will is fighting desperately to gain custody of his younger brother. Will he be able to save his brother from a toxic environment? Once again these men are at a crossroads and will have to lean on God and each other to survive; but instead, they just might allow pride to drive a wedge between them.
“The Retreat II: Men After God’s Own Heart” by author Dijorn Moss is a divine and thrilling novel that relinks the reader with four close friends planning to reunite with other church members for a weekend to recoil personal issues and strengthen their trust and faith in God. Will, Chauncey, Jamal, and Quincy are confronted with new predicaments that challenge their abilities to make the right decision. The Men’s Retreat will invigorate the importance of their brotherhood and guide them to positive outcomes.
Dijorn Moss again validates respectable quality writing in the book which is strongly appreciated by avid readers.
This book was for men in my opinion. However, I learned a lot and enjoyed reading it. So a woman could benefit from reading this as well.
The men in this story are religious, spiritual, flawed, tempted, redeemed, and humbled. Yeah, I know that is a lot of categories, but that's exactly what I took away from reading this. The Retreat is more than a group of men becoming spiritual. It was about each of these men finding out who they were as an individual. How they had either outgrown their past or how their past was still affecting their lives. These men had to deal with infidelity, forgiveness, and learning to love themselves. There was so much in this book that I would want my son to read because I know that he would be able to relate.
This was a good book, a pleasant surprise. I am glad that I picked it up.
It's a year later and the fellas are back for The Retreat 2. A lot has happen since that last men's retreat-Titus is married, Quincey and his wife have made it through their affairs, Chauncey is dating (well sort of), Jamal is engaged, and Will has been on the straight and narrow despite the constant pull from his past. Yet, a new year means new problems and new mountains to climb. Can the men overcome their personal difficulties, and will this year's retreat reveal the path to God's heart.
I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel, even more so than the first book. The initial book was also a good read, but in my opinion, the sequel demonstrates the author's growth, as well as the development of the characters. It is so rare to find a story about AA Christian men, especially one written by a man. So often, Christian women wonder about the struggles of their men, and how men in general can build a better relationship with God and their families. I love the concept of a men's retreat encouraging brotherhood, accountability, and understanding God's word. It was refreshing to see that the guys did not abandon each other after the last retreat, but continued to lean on each other and remind one another of their responsibilities as men. I was happy to see that this book has conflict, but not the over-the-top drama that occurs in so many contemporary books. The characters come from various walks of life, making the story relatable and down-to-earth. Hat's off to Mr. Moss for a satisfying read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys inspirational/Christian fiction.
I was shocked to find out that there was a part two--that was good news. I was glad to get an update on what was going on with Pastor Dawkins and Grace. Now to the story. There was nothing wrong with the plot. All of the same characters returned, I just wished that their individual stories were more elaborated on. I truly felt like each character's story could have been a novel of its own. It was almost as if as soon as we were getting the gist of an individual's story, it cut off and went to someoneone's elses story. I would have liked more from each individual story. I was happy with the way that everything ended.
I rate this book three stars as it was an okay read. This was a book club choice. We read the first book and enjoyed the book and the discussion. This second book didn't live up to the first one, in my opinion. The book also had many grammatical and typing errors. there were probably not enough errors to take away from the story but, they were noticeable. There are a lot of the same characters but their stories aren't developed enough. I didn't really begin to enjoy this book until they got to the Men's Retreat. I did take away from it some good points and even some affirmations. I will still keep this author on my list of christian fiction authors.
A good follow up to "The Retreat", it catches up with its main characters in the months following the life-changing men's retreat. The characters are well written, the narrative is compelling, and most of al it's good food for the soul of men following Christ.
Just finished ready this book after about a year from reading the first retreat. I had forgotten some of the characters and what had happen. But it didn't take long before I remembered and I loved it as much as the first.
A book that highlights how men are in need friendship and spiritual guidance. Together these brothers in Christ were able to bond together to change lives.
