Tamelia Tumlin sold her first story to Dogwood Tales Magazine many years ago while taking a creative writing course in college. The short story titled "The Traveler" was the feature story for that edition. After graduating college in elementary education, life, a teaching career and a wonderful son consumed most of her time. However, in the past couple of years, the yearning to pen fabulous romantic tales of to-die-for heroes and spirited heroines has taken over.
Ms. Tumlin has worked with several online publishers, but she is now writing for Steel Magnolia Press. Juggling motherhood, teaching and writing is a challenge, but one she welcomes to pursue her passion. Her novels range from sweet and sassy to dark and dangerous.

About a month ago, there was a promotion on Amazon and this book was a freebie and accidentally, I stumbled upon it and 'bought' it.

It was a free read so I did not expect much and since it is novella I doubted there would be any deep character development. So, enjoying this book was a pleasant surprise. There were some interesting ideas with different types of dragons (water, chaos, fire, earth...) and I am sorry author did not have time to develop them more.

As for the romance between Brayden & Callie it was as expected. ZAP! They are deeply profoundly in love. In fact, they are soul-mates. I am always skeptic when this happens in book. I think that true love does not just happen, you have to work on it (at least deep true love, not superficial attraction).

No spoilers...

Oh I liked this one. It was fresh with some novel ideas behind it too (no pun intended). Nice enjoyable read.

Well, let me just say four point one NOM's out of five. The main man is hotter than his job, and can place his boots in my bed anytime. Phew.

I quite often find myself falling for the leading man in a book, after all, that's one of the things that we love about this genre isn't it? That and a touch of magic here and there?

The story was well cunningly rought, and I love some of the twists and turns it took. It was even a little dark in places.

All in all quite a good read. Enjoyed it, and it definitely put a smile on my dial!

2.5+ Big sexy firefight dragon shifter- okay that's worth reading it right there. This very short novella is a decent start to a series of 'Gatekeepers' dragon shifters. We focus on one of the gatekeepers and his struggle to put out the flames on the local fires caused by a nasty evil dragon and his caller. While this is going on our dragon hero is fighting another fire, his lust for a women. His Mate ??You see where this is going ? Nothing new, nothing unexpected, but a good story.

This book has so much potential to be a full length novel. In fact, I wanted it to be! There were so many places this novella could have been flushed out and given me so much more mystery and suspense or even better, more romance! I felt kind of cheated that it was only a novella. I really wanted to see more

Tamelia Tumlin is a new author for me. This is only the second novella I've read from her and I've enjoyed both of them!

Enjoyable read

Few dragons are allowed on earth and very few sorceress. Brayden is one of the few dragons because he is on of four gatekeepers. Callie is one of the few sorceress, one that hasn't use or honed he powered. But when these two get together it's explosive even thought on there home world the two species are at odds with each other. Charlie's half brother up s pure evil and is shows in this book. Well written and very entertaining to read.

meh - another reminder why i stay away from novellas. Rushed plot line and predictable. Not a bad read . . . had it been a fully-fleshed novel.

Not a big fan of sorcerers and dragons but a pretty quick, interesting read.
Sorcerer Callie meets hot fire fighter Brayden who is also a dragon gatekeeper. Danger is around every corner as someone from the supernatural world is setting fires all over New Orleans.

This is really a charming story and I really wanted to give it more stars but I am one picky reader. Maybe I am too picky. I have to give Tumlin full marks that she kept me turning pages on my Kindle, wondering what was coming next. I also have to mention it because it is so vital to me: I was never once jerked out of the story by poor grammar, syntax or spelling mistakes.

First off, it lost a star because it was too short! I felt cheated when I reached the end of it. I felt certain there had to be more to it than this. There was a lot of stuff that was just plain overlooked and should have been developed. Such as the relationship between Jarithia and Earth. The main thing about any Speculative Fiction is that builds worlds. Science fiction and the fantasy genres share this. Paranormal romance novels which are a sub-group within speculative fiction also need to build a convincing world. Sadly, this aspect was not developed in this book. I was left with too many unanswered questions. Why Earth? Does Jarithia have this relationship with other planets?

Secondly, another way in which the world was not developed was Our Hero. For a shapeshifter from another planet, Braydon was much too human for someone who had only assumed a human form so he could live on our planet. Which immediately raises the question: what is his real form? Oh, yeah, sure, he could turn into a dragon but that was almost a throwaway in this story. I was left with too many questions. What is it like to be a dragon? What does it feel like to fly? He kept talking about the dragon as if it were a different creature and not part of him. Was the dragon Braydon's true form on his home planet?

Human literature is full of tales of dragons. I think Tumlin really needed to work with this. Have Braydon speculate perhaps on the human view vs Jarithian views of dragons such as nature, values, motivations. One thing Tumlin did mention was that as a shapeshifter, Braydon could only make love with a woman who truly loved him or he would lose his ability to change shape and would for the rest of his life be stuck in dragon form. I suppose from that we are to infer that he was a virgin which does make for a nice change in a romance novel.

Thirdly, there is Our Heroine, Callie. She strikes me as TSTL heroine. TSTL= Too Stupid To Live for those unfamiliar with the anacronym. It is implausible to me that she was so ignorant of her brother's true character. After all, she did grow up with him. She also mentioned that she had been back and forth between Jarithia and Earth several times so how could she possibly have been as ignorant of sorcery as she is? Yes, I know that she decided not to develop her own powers, but surely in these trips back to the home world she would have learned the history of sorcery?

Her brother was a cliche villain with no character development to speak of. I find it hard to believe that he had no inner conflict. I betcha when he was a baby she loved him. I bet they played together as children. Hard for me to believe that their father could have so completely persuaded the brother to have evil plans for Callie without some sort of inner turmoil.

The fourth thing that bothered me was the names the jarithians used on Earth. They are just so human. Ok Ok, I get it that they are passing for human but I really wanted the names to sound a little bit more alien.

There was so much potential which was overlooked. The backstory was missing. Why was Cyrus as he was? Why did Callie's mom marry such a despicable man? How could Braydon afford to build a castle complete with moat and drawbridge on a firefighter's salary?

How could Braydon switch from human to dragon and back again and have his clothes remain intact? Every story I've ever read, every movie, every TV show tells me that when a shapeshifter shifts shapes (try saying that out loud three times) the clothes are destroyed. If it is due to Magik, then please say so. An author just can't write about a clothed shapesifter sifting shape (I couldn't resist) without addressing this point.

I truly hope that Tumlin re-visits this story to turn it into a novel.

This is the first book in the Gatekeeper's series about dragonshifters who guard the four gates into Jarithia. Brayden St. John is a water dragonshifter and can invoke water. We meet him on the way to a fire where he starts hearing a voice in his head telling him to hurry. When he gets inside a sorceress is protecting some children with a shield from the fire. But dragons and sorcerers don't get along after a long and bloody war that forced their races to distant parts of Jarithia. Brayden knows what she is, but she doesn't learn until later that Brayden is a dragon.

Callie Gautreaux saves the children but then vanishes. She is a simple flower shop owner who never harnessed her sorceress powers. Saving the children exhausted her. Not everyone from Jarithia is allowed to pass into the human world. They need special permission, which Callie has. Her parents are dead, but she has a half brother who is half human as well.

Someone has called in a Chaos dragon to help with an evil plan that involves Callie's death. But can Brayden put aside his hatred for magic to find true love with Callie. And if he does, will she love him back or cause him to lose himself to the dragon forever? You have to read to find out.

The gates are protected by four dragons with different elemental powers. What I found strange is that you never see the gates in the story. I don't know if they are just called gates, or if there really are gates they are protecting.

The story is short, the bad guy evident, but his plans took a little explaining to understand. There is a protection in place that if a dragon makes love to a sorcerer and the sorcerer does not love them back, they lose themselves at the point of orgasm. So you can imagine the tension when it is time for these two to get together (but Callie doesn't know this at the time). There is some other parts about Callie not harnessing her powers, which got a little silly.

I like the story, but felt the short format didn't do the story justice. The author is building a different set of races and lands. To totally understand it all, you need more information than just putting the facts out there. I would rather the story reveal them in a longer format that I could have immersed myself into.

I look forward to the next story, hoping that it is longer and that we get to see more characters and how the world revolves.

A Dragon's Seduction by Tamelia Tumlin is a 2012 release and published by Steel Magnolia Press.
This Novella sets the stage for The Gatekeepers series. This book is about 70 pages long.

Brayden is a firefighter and just so happens to also be a dragon shape shifter and part of The Gatekeepers team. When a series of fires breaks out in New Orleans, firefighters have their work cut out for them. When Brayden responds to one such fire, he is urged by a voice to hurry up and get in the building. When he finally comes across the people trapped in the building he finds they are being protected by a beautiful sorceress.
Callie, only knows that Brayden is a firefighter and that he is very attractive. Something happened between the two of them while saving people from the fire. But, Brayden instantly knows that Callie is off limits. Dragon shape shifters and sorcerers are enemies. Becoming lovers would really be off limits. Callie is only aware that Brayden is not only human, but has some other quality as well.

When it becomes clear that a dangerous dragon, not allowed to break though, is behind the fires and that Callie's brother is involved somehow, Brayden must protect Callie and the city.

Although this is a short story I felt like it did it's job by setting up the series. We get a love story and are introduced to future protagonist. Firefighters are sexy. They just are. So, I was instantly drawn to Brayden. Not only that, he does something for Callie that only a man that is really in love would have risked. It was a major "Sigh" moment.
I enjoyed this one so much I have already added the next book in the series to my TBR list: A Dragon's Heart.
This book is available in the kindle store right as a single title, but is also part of the Forbidden Lovers box set. The entire box set is only 99 cents.

This one gets a B+

(3.5 stars = I liked it) During a rash of arson related fires, a dragon shifter fireman man, Brayden St. John, is aided by sorceress Callie Gautreaux during a rescue in a burning building although, since Dragons and Magik users are enemies in Brayden’s home world, he suspects Callie of setting the fire. Despite his inner dragon's better judgment, when they again cross paths, Brayden finds himself drawn to Callie even though he should keep his distance, because sorceresses are known seductresses and a forbidden mating between a sorceress and a dragon can leave the shifter stuck in his dragon form forever.

For the most part I liked A Dragon's Seduction. Really the only complaint I had, was that as a short story there just wasn't enough space to transition Callie and Brayden from potential enemies to potential mates without relying on a them 'sensing' that they were soul mates. So even though I could still forgive this in a short story, and in a kindle freebie, I really wished that Tumlin would have developed A Dragon's Seduction as a full length novel - she definitely had enough in her setup to be worthy of a longer book given the conflict between the leads and the back plot peril for Callie.

But as a short story romance, I still enjoyed A Dragon's Seduction - firemen and dragons combined was a big plus - and since this is apparently the first of four books, I would definitely consider giving another a try.

Dragon shifters, Sorceresses, Wizards, evil family member lots of sexual tension and New Orleans are the makings for this fun novella. Brayden and Callie have attraction and a mystery to solve to bring them together, can they work through the trust issues each of them have to stay together?
This is a quick read, as it is a novella it does have some of the inherent issues of trying to balance a story and information about the background while doing so in a short space. I think this was done well, I found a few bits of information seemed to be repeated more often than necessary but overall a good, fun story.

While I enjoyed A Dragon's Seduction, this story is a perfect example of a novella that wanted to be a novel. Novellas have such limited page counts, it's difficult to create solid character development without rushing the plot and forcing the characters to move at breakneck speed just to get an arc in.

Too much of this novella was rushed and the reader was forced to accept convenient situations as "it is what it is" to keep the plot moving. While the story was an enjoyable read, the rushed writing doesn't make for a great read.

4 Stars! Firefighter, Brayden St. John is a Gatekeeper; a dragon shifter, who protects his corner of the universe from evil dragons. Callie Gautreaux, young, lovely flower shop owner/sorceress, has no idea the strength of her magical powers inside her. Together, they fight her evil brother who wants to kill her for her magick, and Chaos, an evil dragon. They discover they are mates for life.

I look forward to reading more by Tamelia Tumlin!

This story was sweet, with a dragon shifter and his mortal enemy being a sorceress who has denied her heritage, falling in love. The story was short, but the author did a fairly good job with peppering some background for why the two are normally enemies, and bringing them together. Overall, it was a nice, if quick, read.

Who doesn't love Dragons...

The author put together a very good story. She explained in the story the problem between the dragons and sorceress and what could happen. The story line was interesting and had all the bells and whistles of magic. The characters were interesting and kept my interest through the whole story. Was definitely a good read!

a love story

This is a short book, but sweet. The tale of a dragon, firefighter who meets a sorceress (who should be his mortal enemy) and falls in love. Fortunately for him she's not a bad sorceress and she falls for him too.
