Making the Future: Occupations Interventions Empire And Resistance

Rate this book
In Making the Future, Noam Chomsky takes on a wide range of hot-button issues including the ongoing financial crisis, Obama's presidency, the limits of the two-party system, nuclear Iran, Afghanistan, Israel-Palestine, corporate power, and the future of American politics. Laced throughout his critiques are expressions of commitment to democracy and the power of popular struggles. 'Progressive legislation and social welfare,' writes Chomsky, 'have been won by popular struggles, not gifts from above. Those struggles follow a cycle of success and setback. They must be waged every day, not just once every four years, always with the goal of creating a genuinely responsive democratic society, from the voting booth to the workplace.'

Making the Future offers fierce, accessible, timely, gloves-off political writing by one of the world's foremost intellectual and political dissidents.

Avram Noam Chomsky is an American professor and public intellectual known for his work in linguistics, political activism, and social criticism. Sometimes called "the father of modern linguistics", Chomsky is also a major figure in analytic philosophy and one of the founders of the field of cognitive science. He is a laureate professor of linguistics at the University of Arizona and an institute professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Among the most cited living authors, Chomsky has written more than 150 books on topics such as linguistics, war, and politics. In addition to his work in linguistics, since the 1960s Chomsky has been an influential voice on the American left as a consistent critic of U.S. foreign policy, contemporary capitalism, and corporate influence on political institutions and the media.
Born to Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants (his father was William Chomsky) in Philadelphia, Chomsky developed an early interest in anarchism from alternative bookstores in New York City. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania. During his postgraduate work in the Harvard Society of Fellows, Chomsky developed the theory of transformational grammar for which he earned his doctorate in 1955. That year he began teaching at MIT, and in 1957 emerged as a significant figure in linguistics with his landmark work Syntactic Structures, which played a major role in remodeling the study of language. From 1958 to 1959 Chomsky was a National Science Foundation fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study. He created or co-created the universal grammar theory, the generative grammar theory, the Chomsky hierarchy, and the minimalist program. Chomsky also played a pivotal role in the decline of linguistic behaviorism, and was particularly critical of the work of B.F. Skinner.
An outspoken opponent of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, which he saw as an act of American imperialism, in 1967 Chomsky rose to national attention for his anti-war essay "The Responsibility of Intellectuals". Becoming associated with the New Left, he was arrested multiple times for his activism and placed on President Richard M. Nixon's list of political opponents. While expanding his work in linguistics over subsequent decades, he also became involved in the linguistics wars. In collaboration with Edward S. Herman, Chomsky later articulated the propaganda model of media criticism in Manufacturing Consent, and worked to expose the Indonesian occupation of East Timor. His defense of unconditional freedom of speech, including that of Holocaust denial, generated significant controversy in the Faurisson affair of the 1980s. Chomsky's commentary on the Cambodian genocide and the Bosnian genocide also generated controversy. Since retiring from active teaching at MIT, he has continued his vocal political activism, including opposing the 2003 invasion of Iraq and supporting the Occupy movement. An anti-Zionist, Chomsky considers Israel's treatment of Palestinians to be worse than South African–style apartheid, and criticizes U.S. support for Israel.
Chomsky is widely recognized as having helped to spark the cognitive revolution in the human sciences, contributing to the development of a new cognitivistic framework for the study of language and the mind. Chomsky remains a leading critic of U.S. foreign policy, contemporary capitalism, U.S. involvement and Israel's role in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, and mass media. Chomsky and his ideas are highly influential in the anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist movements. Since 2017, he has been Agnese Helms Haury Chair in the Agnese Nelms Haury Program in Environment and Social Justice at the University of Arizona.

I am awed by the clarity of thought, understanding and expression shown by Chomsky, every time I read him. This collection of articles tears to shreds the tissue of deceit that we are governed on the basis of. On so many issues: US foreign policy, civil rights, the financial crisis, the state of democracy in the world today, and many more, Chomsky lays bare how things work. It's a book that concentrates your anger. It would be easier to be left alone to go armadillo, to go hedgehog, to go ostrich, but Chomsky grabs you by the lapels and says he's not going to leave you alone. He wants you to get mad. He tells you you're a human being, that your life has value. And he does offer some hope, as well, some way forward. One thing I'm left certain of: if everyone read this, the world would be a better place.

Another good Chomsky book. The issues he brings up and the way he explains things makes it easy for just about anybody to understand current events a little better.

The reason I give it only 3 stars (** see below) is because I read this book [almost] right after reading (first) Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance and then (second) Failed States: The Abuse of Power and the Assault on Democracy and I found that Chomsky was repeating himself. Let me explain:

"Hegemony" was great. "Failed States" was very good, but in it Chomsky covers some of the same topics as in "Hegemony". In Making the Future: The Unipolar Imperial Moment (this book), he AGAIN goes over some of the same things in "Hegemony", and some things from "Failed States".

I guess these are the issues he wants to talk about most, to bring up-to-speed, so to speak, the general masses, but for people like me, who read more than one book of his, it gets pretty repetitive after a while. (Okay, I get it already!) So maybe waiting a few months in-between Chomsky books is advisable.

** Re-reading my review almost two years after first writing it, I decided to change the rating from 3 stars to 4, since the book is very informative and intelligent, and the fact that (at that time) I'd just read 2 other Chomsky books back-to-back is not this book's fault and should not affect its rating.
So there.

Making the future is second book that I have read of the well knowed and famed intellectual of the current century, Noam Chomsky.

This book is the second edition, first edition was banned because of the dissent and provoking writing of Chomsky against the American estabilment.

This book is adopted from the Noam Chomsky columns of the New york times syndicate, that he wrote between the period of 2007 to 2012.

This book covers vast areas of topics, and as it is associated with Chomsky's name that the book will be revoking, provoking, and will be against the established world order, and it will be from the perspective of the world, not from the American perspective, as Noam Chomsky is the number one critic of his own country, its empire, its atrocities around the world which makes it mockery around the world, and it's decision and involvement in the world politics resented people against Us, and public sentiment of the countries where America invades, or played it's role is extremely harsher against US.

This book covers the events that have made the future since 2007, such as wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, US presidential race, the rise of China, the shift of Latin American countries away from U.S, nuclear threat of Iran and north korea, Israel invasion of Gaza and it's expansion of settlement towards the west bank, development in climate changes, death of Osama bin laden, world financial crises, and occupy moment.

A very good read if someone is interested in above topics..

As usual Chomsky turns his weary eye towards the world and withers it with a considerable amount of common sense. As a collection of essays written over the past 5 years or so it makes for interesting reading, especially as a record of Obama's tenure in office - from the initial promise and hype to the eventual disappointment and sense of little change and less hope; don't worry, the Republicans fair worse ... but not by much. There's also plenty of insight into the Middle East, Palestine/Israel, the Arab Spring, growing nuclear instabilities, AfPak & The Other Stans, Freedom!!! (those exclamation points are necessary, because only one kind matters), and the rise of China, Russia, India, Brazil & South Africa (CRIBS). It's an engaging read, and when every chapter is so short it makes for as easy book to dip in and out of.

If you've never read Chomsky, this is a good read for his take on events over the last five years. His fresh voice and criticism of the status quo is compelling. I particularly enjoyed adding a new word to my vocabulary, "precariat", which represents so many of the people I see every day in my job -- individuals that are economically precarious. The current economic environment certainly contributes to the creation of the precariat. For a taste of Chomsky go here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/noam-ch... .

Chomsky's take on foreign policy is chilling to me. The fact that so much of our foreign policy operates outside the rule of law disturbs me.

This was such an awesome read. Short 2-5 page essays written by Chomsky over the past few years. He sheds an interesting light on all sorts of political sneakiness that the US is a part of. Also makes me so mad/sad that our country's allegiance lies with Israel. Wish it were different. I recommend this to anyone wanting a better understanding to the incredibly unfair and illegal ways our country is dealing with international law. How do we get away with it?

This was my first time reading Chomsky, and I was delighted to find his writing was flowing and easy to read even when the topics were heavy. Making the Future consists of columns written for the New York Times Syndicate between 2007 and 2011, so the articles are short enough (4-8 pages) to read a couple of them whenever there is some time to spare. Being factual columns, often responding to incidents as they happened, some of the contexts are undoubtedly lost when articles are reprinted in collections, but I didn't find this much of a problem.

Some knowledge and understanding of the events Chomsky writes about is definitely beneficial, but I actually found my interest towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict growing after reading a couple of the columns, even though my prior knowledge of the situation in Gaza and West Bank was pretty much non-existent. I wouldn't worry too much about prior knowledge, as it is easy enough to follow Chomsky's arguments, and it is always possible to read up on the topics afterwards.

The reason I only rated this three stars is because I felt something was lacking or the collection wasn't coherent enough. There were many essays about the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, plus a handful of articles about other events in the Middle East or elsewhere, so it almost felt like most of the different topics (e.g. the financial crisis, Obama's presidency, WikiLeaks) were examined through the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Not that Chomsky didn't offer many compelling arguments, but I think I would have liked to have seen a bit more variety. On their own, most of the articles were very interesting and thought-provoking, but when you read multiple columns back to back, you start noticing quite a lot of repetition.

All in all, I thought this was a good introduction to Chomsky, as well as a refresher on recent world events, so I know I will be reading more on both in the future.

Published in 2012, this book is a little dated. A lot has happened in U.S/ world politics since. None-the-less, it's still a very informative and insightful read… I mean, Noam Chomsky, man, Noam Chomsky… I would recommend it for the historical analysis regarding such issues as class struggle within the United States, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Iraq/ Afghanistan/ Pakistan/ Middle-East/ oil observations, Latin American coups funded by the United States, you even learn about this island called Jeju Island off the coast of South Korea used for U.S.-South Korea military purposes against the population's will (For the United States, the base's purpose is to be prepared "to project force towards China," it being 300 miles from China and all), etc… I mean, the U.S. has 800 bases throughout the world. Who doesn't it have beef with? It takes a lot to maintain an empire. Anyhow, to truly understand current happenings, you need to understand the history that led to them. As Noam Chomsky points out: "Education doesn't mean telling people what to believe –it also means learning from them and with them. Karl Marx famously said that the task is not just to understand the world but to change it. A variant to keep in mind is that if you want to change the world you'd better try to understand it."

Before going to sleep I'm checking if there is any superior state under my bed. Would be a nightmare if they show up to “stabilize” my dreamlands. Reality is not funny though. One gotta love Chomsky provocation: Hey, boy! Stop reading this book and go out there change things! After an effort to put Chomsky’s facts and ideas together you naturally start thinking: Why civilization ended up like this? Douglas Adams has a nice explanation, but we are urging for a solution.

These essays were written between 2000-2010 and after reading them i cant help but feel failed by the the previous generations of people who witnessed all of these events and didnt do anything about it! Or at least didnt do enough. Hey lets all watch the systematic dismantling of democracy and not do anything about it. Hey lets all watch the US strongarm and bomb and invade dozens of countries and not do anything about it. I dont know. Being a young person interested in politics, learning that the problems im facing are the same ones that people have been facing for decades is frustrating.

Not a hopeful book but very informative

Reading Noam Chomsky is like pulling teeth. It's painful.

Even when he has a good point, he insists on cluttering it with cherry-picked or invented facts, to making claims that he doesn't bother to justify and to generally writing propaganda. That's really what Noam Chomsky does, write propaganda, and his ignorance on the subject of history and complete commitment to socialism is note-worthy.

Examples:

He starts from the very first article printed in this book, claiming regarding North Korea "Had that agreement been implemented, there would not have been a North Korea bomb test or the heightened conflict, always verging on the edge of nuclear war." - This referring to an proposed agreement during the GW Bush administration. Always good to know that Noam can read minds and predict the future.

Of course, in the very next article, he demonstrates just how well he can predict the future, as he talks about the ethanol fuel drive driving up the price of tortillas. It turns out, if you do a bit of research, that what drives the price of tortillas is old-fashioned inflation: https://www.ft.com/content/d2b73384-d...

Add his on-going love affair with Hamas, his unwillingness to actually consider that other people in the region might have achieved anything (pretty sure the Egyptians have had free elections in their history - but Chomsky claims the ONLY free election in the Arab world was the one that elected Hamas).

For a man who claims to be a libertarian socialist, he continually calls for government intervention in financial markets, and it seems that he has never bothered to read an economist who disagrees with him (of course, based on his references, it seems he has only read two or three economists total).

Probably my favorite part is when he talks about Central and South America - asserting that "South America has moved towards integration, a pre-requisite for independence". It seems that Noam has trouble grasping what independence means. He manages to confuse FT Bragg, North Carolina and the School of the Americas (which was at FT Benning, Georgia) as well as tell us how effective a leader and a view to the future is found in Venezuela and the leadership of Hugo Chavez. When Chomsky wrote that, Venezuela was already showing signs of the typical collapse that socialism brings. Now, more than ten years later, it is more than a little obvious how badly Noam Chomsky read that situation.

And Chomsky can't actually find anything positive to say about certain countries, no matter what. After spending half an article denigrating Gadhafi as mass murderer, war criminal, etc. - he says:
"The United States joined in the U.N. Security Council authorization of a 'no-fly zpne' and measures to protect civilians, to be implemented primarily by France, the United Kingdom and the United States, the three traditional imperial powers". First off, the three traditional imperial powers are Spain, France and Britain. Second, there is no point to that comment except to try to undercut that those three countries (in conjunction with others) were trying to protect civilians.

Chomsky actually makes some good points - the similarity of the Democrats and Republicans, the idea of self-determination, etc. - but his constant employing the techniques of propaganda is worse than boring, it's offensive. He expects his readers to not challenge the viewpoints he puts out there, just accept it.

52 DOSES OF REALITY

"Making The Future" is Chomskys second collection of short editorial articles (roughly 5 or 6 book pages dealing with a subject that was of current interest) and takes up the baton from where 2007's "Interventions" concludes and carries it forward to the autumn of 2012. All of the articles were made available for publication worldwide from the New York Times Syndicate, whose senior editor John Stickney provides a short introduction.

The nature of the format prohibits in-depth analysis but Chomsky does provide the reader with 52 clear and concise antidotes to a mainstream news coverage that is often ahistorical, written within the limited world view of established power and deeply hypocritical. Subjects covered include the Israel-United States-Palestine confrontation; Iraq; the War in Afghanistan/Pakistan; the post credit crunch recessions; Nuclear Weapons in the Middle East, South Asia and North Korea; the conflicts in Georgia, Libya and Somalia as well as the possible conflict to come with Iran; the Arab Spring; Barack Obamas ascent to the presidency on the back of revulsion at the Bush II years and rapid descent into business as usual; the extra judicial killing of Osama bin Laden. It's not all doom and gloom as Chomsky also writes on what he quite reasonably sees as positive developments within Latin America and the collection ends with an abridged version of a speech he gave to the Occupy Boston movement.

"Making The Future" is a fine collection that provokes the reader to think about events in the contemporary world in a humane, honest and critical manner. This is a book that I'd recommended reading with the caveat that the content will be familiar to those who regularly follow Chomskys writings on the internet.

Wow, what a book!

The best parts about this book are that it is divided into very small chapters (makes it more readable for me), and it covers a huge range of subjects. Moreover, Chomsky provides us with some point of views that are not very common and that is great for us to have a broader view and understanding of topics like: US Foreign Policy, George W. Bush and Obama administrations, Israel-Palestine conflict, Iran’s “threat”, Iraq and Afghanistan invasion, 2008 Financial Crisis, corporate propaganda, financialization of US market since 1970s...

The worst parts were that Noam Chomsky is quite repetitive sometimes, addressing the same topic with same arguments over and over (which is kind of good to remember the arguments). The other negative issue I had with the book was its superficiality in some topics that won’t add much to your understanding of unless you had previous familiarity with the matter.

Overall, a great book and I recommend that anyone engaged and interested in US Foreign Policy, international affairs, the US economy and its dynamics.

This is a collection of the monthly columns that Chomsky wrote for the New York Times from April 2007 to October 2011.. As usual, Chomsky sheds an interesting light on all sorts of political sneakiness that the US is a part of. Such a solid book and quick read. Great for someone wanting an intro to Chomsky's views.

A collection of short editorial commentaries by Chomsky, up to 2011. The length of the articles is just long enough to give you an antidote of the prevailing mainstream media opinion. Good to read to stay a critical participant in society.

"ان اردنا تغيير العالم فلا بد من فهمه جيدا ، وهذا لا يعني الاستماع الى الاحاديث وقراءة الكتب على الرغم من اهميتها . يمكنكم ان تتعلموا عبر المشاركة .. من الاخرين .. علينا جميعا اكتساب القدرة على الفهم والخبرة للتوصل الى صوغ الافكار والخطط "
