Attorney Lys Fensic has spent her life controlling a psychic power that kills. Her ability to lock herself down falls apart when her ex, a mage, sends enslaved demons to kill her. In a psychic free fall, she turns to tough guy Telos Khūnbish for help. But is he a mage as she’s always suspected or is he something far more dangerous?

Free Fall is set in the My Immortals series world where demons and magic-using humans called the magekind are not quite getting along. Most people have no idea they’re living in what amounts to a magical war-zone. Free Fall is based on the short story Future Tense but is considerably expanded and includes scenes that were censored from the short story. This novella is about 35,000 words (130 pages).

4.5 stars - After a nasty breakup with her boyfriend, high powered lawyer Lys picks the scariest guy she knows to help her retrieve her stuff, the dangerously sexy security expert Kubush Telos who Lys is pretty sure lives on the gray side of the law. Kubush is not much into good deeds but he's been attracted to Lys and sure that smoldering sensuality lurks behind her icy facade, and seeing the fractures in rigid self control he decides to help her, only to discover that the he's unknowingly walked into the middle of something truly dangerous. Kubush is surprised to find, that lurking behind an impressive set of mental blocks Lys, is not the vanilla human she seems and is instead an uncontrolled witch who sees the future and the psycho ex who wants to kill her is actually a Mage who attempts to turn Kubush into a mindless slave - because Kubush is not human either, he's a demon and an enemy to magekind.

Free Fall is a reincarnated and expanded version of the little stand alone short, Future Tense. Like its previous incarnation, Free Fall is set in the world of Jewel's My Immortal demon/mage series. Unlike the original story, which offered only a promise of a future romance for Lys and Kubush, the reworked version fulfills that promise and makes time amidst the danger for Lys and Kubush to get down and dirty before the final climactic battle. The added material gives Free Fall a slightly different feel than it's predecessor, but I liked it just as much. Lys's power is still an interesting one and Kubush is still rough and dangerous but more involved since he's wanted Lys all along. I liked the way the Jewel manages to make it feel like there is a real connection between Lys and Kubush by the time the story wraps up.

So Free Fall was a great novella length story for those who follow the series, and this time around there is actually enough here for new readers to get a feel for the complicated world of Jewel's series which is dark, intensely sexy and has just a touch of kink (demon's are ony fertile in their alternate form.)

I really enjoyed this novella. The heat between the two leads was wonderful as was the magic world. There are a few motivation issues on the part of secondary and some backstory I feel is missing but the romance and adventure is very good.

I have been hip deep in Carolyn Jewel's My Immortals series and loving it!

With the exception of reading Dead Drop first, I have read (read: glommed) the rest of the My Immortals series in publication order. Now I'm in the midst of re-reads in order to write my reviews. When something like that happens...well, I end up writing the reviews for my favorites first. And Free Fall is certainly one of my favorites!

Free Fall starts with the heroine, Lys Fensic, waiting for Telos Khūnbish. Lys is an untrained witch who is losing control of her deadly powers. Being untrained magekind with a strong power normally results in the untrained mage going insane. Instead of going insane, Lys developed extremely strong mental blocks that cut her off from the world emotionally. These blocks allowed Lys some measure of control but cut her off from both pleasure and touch. Normally Lys has iron control over herself but breaking off her relationship with her mage [ex]boyfriend, Michael, and her exposure to a talisman has shredded Lys's ability to control herself and her powers.

Lys, an attorney, met Telos Khūnbish, a computer security expert and consultant, via work. They shared a strong attraction to each other and he happens to be one of the few people she could touch without her unstable power getting out of control. Because Lys can touch Telos and she senses something "different" about him, she assumes he is a mage. She calls Telos and asks for his help after she is attacked by her ex-boyfriend, Michael.

The connection between Telos and Lys was both adorable and hot. I loved how they often called each other by their last names. :-D I loved that Lys and Telos knew and liked each other previous to the start of the story and how Telos was able to reinforce Lys' shielding with a simple touch. The characterization was almost perfect for me - I truly felt the attraction and the affection between Telos and Lys.

Lys' power is really different - just like the rest of the heroines in this series - and I'm very interested to see where Ms Jewel takes these dovetailing powers. Watching Lys trying to control and use her powers to protect Telos was heartwarming. The reader knows that Lys tries to avoid using her powers at all times - so watching her use those powers to protect Telos was amazing. And the ending. OMG I loved the ending. :-D

I loved 99% of Free Fall, to be honest. The only things I didn't care for was what felt like a limited explanation as to how Lys' free fall started. It's implied that Lys' free fall was started by Michael's attempt to have her killed. What I don't understand is why Michael wanted to have Lys killed and I don't really understand the situation with the talisman. All in all, those are small concerns and didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story in the least.

Note: Free Fall has a completely different cover now. I just like this cover more.

Here is a novella well set in the middle of an going series that is absolutely appealing and easy even for novices like me.
The dark edges of the story are what I loved and the glimpses in the my immortals series are interesting enough to make me want the rest of the books. The novella is a UF for me, I hope the books will be too.

Reread.

This expanded version of 'Present Tense' really delved deeper into the Demon aspects. Where the ss was a great story and a good read for everyone; 'Free Fall' was best for regular readers of the series. Newbies to the series would have hard time 'getting' the Demon world from this book, even though the wordbuilding laid the story out well.

That being said, loved it as always.

Free Fall

An unexpected and extremely entertaining novel.
I had a difficult time understanding Lys or what was going on with her, until I was totally engrossed in the plot. When Telos and Lys came together, I was completely engrossed. This was so very different from any other paranormal I've read and I will be reading more!

I'm so eager for more!

What an unexpected and fascinating novella! I was hooked from the first with the tension (and confusion!) of what was going on with Lys and meeting Telos. Their heat is everything! I'm going to enjoy delving further into this world; I only wish that I had known this is Book 4.5. I'm rushing back to the beginning now!

I bit of a different feel in the paranormal area. I think I would need to start from the beginning to get the full gist of the story. Did it make me want to read the series? Probably.

Back in May, author Carolyn Jewel offered review copies of her novella, Free Fall, to interested bloggers. The premise seemed intriguing, so I was excited when I received a copy. Though there were some fuzzy plot details, the novella’s world-building is interesting and complex and the main characters have great chemistry.

This is a fast paced, well-written story. Jewel starts it off with a high level of tension and keeps the emotions up throughout. Free Fall opens with the main character, Lys Fensic, almost paralyzed by fear – fear of her ex-boyfriend and fear of her own mysterious powers. When Telos, a colleague who Lys turns to for help, enters the story, the comfort and security he is able to bring her is almost palpable. And the chemistry between these two is off the charts. There is a fairly substantial and very steamy love scene towards the conclusion of the story. And let’s just say Telos is not what he seems. Jewel lets him take his true form and I thought this was a bold and well-handled choice. I also appreciated that Jewel added some diversity into the characters as Telos is not your typical blue-eyed, blonde haired paranormal hero. Finally, the world-building is definitely interesting and makes me want to read more of her series. There are mages, demons, and witches; rules are in place and enforced with regards to how demons relate to humans, and mages are powerful and have the ability to enslave demons. This world is dark and dangerous. And very interesting.

Free Fall is part of Jewel’s My Immortals series. I didn’t realize this when I first started the novella (even though it is clearly stated on the first page, doh!) and I do think it might have helped to have some background in the world. The pace moves so fast that there were moments I felt a little fuzzy about what was going on. Lys is running from her abusive boyfriend and I was unclear as to exactly who he was and what he was capable of. He also has a talisman she wants back and I never fully understood its importance or what it signified. The way Telos reacts to learning about the talisman lets the reader know that it has power and I think if you know this world, that power may be understood. Finally, Telos and Lys are great together, but it would have been nice to have a bit more depth and development to their relationship beyond the obvious lust.

Make no mistake, this is a well-written PNR novella that I think accomplished its job – it whet my appetite to read more from the My Immortals world. And while Free Fall had some issues, it was an enjoyable read.

It is as if the novel was made of three separate short stories.
First third is an urban fantasy story, quite interesting and unusual one, with a tense plot. Then suddenly it morphs into an extremely detailed adult-only account of two protagonists getting it on.
All the way into the second third the reader learns of all the ways people are supposed by the author to be intimate when they are tracked by an overwhelmingly strong enemy, with the degree of detail that will make other adult stories look like children's tales. Oh, that's VERY believable that when you're in grave danger, you won't do a thing to improve your standing but instead will indulge in mating, wasting all the precious time.
And then, once it ends, we switch from the climax(es) in protagonists' relations to the climax of the first part. SURPRISE: they almost get killed, and are only saved in the last moment (had they called for help a couple of minutes earlier than they did, instead of occupying themselves with more important bed matters, they would not have to take any chances). All the questions raised by the first part are getting ignored as meaningless, rather than answered.
And they lived happily ever after.

I've read this novel in EFF's "Pwning Tomorrow" collection. While I understand and appreciate that Carolyn Jewel made much to advance EFF cause, I'm not sure if this alone should qualify "Free Fall" for inclusion. All the other stories in the collection are about pwning tomorrow; Free Fall is anything but that. And it is extremely long, too, occupying 1/4th of the 22-story-strong collection. Which means that the explicit scenes alone are as long as 7 shortest stories there, combined together.

Initially confusing, but eventually the rules become clear. Now, I feel like re-reading the Immortal series!

This novella is set in a contemporary world of demons, witches, and mages. Mages provide the largest threat and seem to hold the greatest capacity for evil. (They routinely sacrifice demons for increased power. Mages also enslave demons, making them 'mageheld', which causes demons to lose free will.

Lys Fensic, an attorney and a powerful street witch with the gift of fortelling the future, barely escapes her evil mage boyfriend with her life. Telos Khunbish comes to her assistance. He had thought Lys was a "vanilla' human and has been attracted to her for months. What Lys doesn't know is that Telos is a demon and nothing sparks a demon's lust like magic.

I read this novella when it originally released as "Future Tense". The additional scenes make "Free Fall" a meatier story; plus, the love scene is very hot! Carolyn Jewell is one of the rare authors who does not shy away from her paranormal hero making love in his other forms. (It's understandable why werewolves are restricted because that would be gross.) The love scenes are tastefully done. The story felt a little jagged at the beginning and there seemed to be some repetition, but it smoothed out. Overall, this novella reminded me how much I enjoyed some of the original world-building of the Immortal series world.

I received a copy of this novella free from the author.
My fault for not realizing in advance that Free Fall is set already within the series . . . my enjoyment of the book was dampened by not understanding the background. I felt like I only began to understand the plot about three-quarters of the way through; because of this, I don't recommend this for newcomers to the series.
Carolyn Jewel sets up a world of warlords, demons, mages and magehelds, witches and warlocks, and wars for magic. Lys Fensic, attorney, witch, and recently dumped, loses her job. She's also on the run from said ex-boyfriend, who wants his talisman back. Lys has some precognition, but must keep her emotions tightly wound or she spirals into free fall, affected by the thoughts and emotions of those around her. Afraid she can't control her magic and also save herself, Lys turns to Telos Khunbish for help. There's some history and tension between them, which results in their connecting in the face of danger. Telos is able to provide a counterpoint to Lys' magic, strengthening their bond. He's also a demon in human, which brings its own complications. Ultimately, they're able to defeat the crazy ex, but not without outside help - which leads to both Telos and Lys pledging their allegiance to a local warlord. There's an interesting world here, but do yourself a favor and begin at the beginning.

Free Fall was a decent enough read.

I enjoyed the darker take on magic in this series. The whole turf-war aspect was a tad bit confusing, but there's enough detail put into the novella to give you a general idea of what the world is like.

I also enjoyed reading a paranormal romance where the main character and love interest were not:

A) destined to be together
B) falling in love at first sight

Lys and Talos had actually known each other for a while before the story took place, rather than just meeting up and instantly being all hot for each other. I mean, don't get me wrong, there was definitely a physical attraction between the two of them - but their relationship at least had a foundation.

The goofy shirts that Talos and Nikodemus wear felt a bit shoehorned in, and made me groan.

Lys could be infuriatingly slow at times. For instance, when they go to meet Nikodemus (gah - I almost accidentally typed Nickleodeon) he stands up and introduces himself as Nikodemus.

"Hi! I'm Nickelodeon!"

...god, I'm tired right now.

Two paragraphs later, Lys thinks, "This must be Nikodemus."

No duh. He just told you that.

Aside from occasionally getting frustrated with Lys, it was a decent book - it just didn't quite do it for me.

Jewel has created a fascinating world in Free Fall, and I loved the way that world slowly revealed itself. Even with having read the premise first, I spent half of the first chapter trying to figure out what the heck was going on -- in a good way. I always appreciate a complicated hero, and Telos definitely fits that bill. Dark, mysterious, and sexy-as-hell, he draws you in right along with the heroine, Lys, a witch with little control over her abilities who is both strong and vulnerable, brave and terrified. The only thing I was slightly disappointed in was, with how deep Jewel was able to explore those two characters in 35,000 words, I was hoping for more character development when it came to the villain. I wanted to understand his motivations better and that wasn't really delved into as much as I would have liked, but considering he was more a plot device than a focal point, I was okay with it.

Jewel packs several plot twists into this novella, and the ending has definitely left me wanting more. Luckily, there's a whole series for me to dive into and explore! I'm giving this a solid 4.5 stars.

I've been wanting to read this author for a long time now, but her historical fiction. I didn't even know she wrote fantasy til I came across this. I found it in a May/Dec romance list, but it isn't really. Sure he is centuries old, but he doesn't really come across that way. I loved Telos' character. He's sweetly sexy, yet bad-ass, and he's not human, and you never mistake him as human. Lys herself isn't so 'normal' but doesn't know what she is, except a survivor. So as you read the story, things are revealed to you as they are to Lys. I love this slow unveiling. It was especially so for me, as I haven't read the rest of the series yet. Lys needs help escaping from her psychopathic liar of an ex. The only 'person' she knows who can help her is Telos, whom she suspects isn't all he seems. But if Telos thinks he knows what he's in for helping the pretty human he'd like in his bed, he better think again. It's a whirlwind out of control day full of passion and discovery. Romantic? Yep! In fact I wish there was more to it and will probably read the next one just in the hopes of reading about Telos and Lys some more.

I really, really liked this novella, more so than I probably should have. It's set in the middle of a series that I've never heard of nor ever read, but I said "what the hell, it's free on Amazon right now, and hopefully I won't get too confused."

Great choice! I was swiftly caught up in the story and didn't have any difficulties for reading this as a stand alone. The characters were dynamic and real, the dialogue engaging, the writing just disjointed enough to parallel the psychic fracturing being experienced by one of the main characters. The sex was both playful and hot. What a fun book!

I am a fan, and will most definitely seek out the other books in this series. Kudos to the author!

This is a quick read. While the story is in the My Immortals world, neither character is one that we have met before. I did like the story. Lys and Telos are interesting characters. Lys has a powerful and deadly power and is becoming out of control. She asks Telos for help, and Telos jumps into help her. The story is action packed. I liked the scene that were added to this story, it made it feel like a more complete story.

4/5; 4 stars; A-

This was actually the first book I read in the series. I had downloaded it from Amazon some time ago and came across it when looking for something in my Kindle library. It was interesting and engaging enough to make me go out and buy the rest of the series. I have read a couple of stories by this author years ago and knew I liked her style so was pleased to find more to like by her in the PNR genre.

What an interesting power she has. At times it seems a bit too much, but what she has to deal with in order to live with it seems to counter balance it. When did Durian become a warlord? When he got a sworn? See what I mean by continuity confusion for me most of the time? I wish I could live in Jewel’s head sometimes to see what I might be missing, lol.

Interesting world the author has built here. I like the concept of paranormals living among us oblivious vanilla people.

Once again Jewel delivers a smoking hot, well-paced read. A suck-you-in-gobble-it-down-in-one-sitting read. When I think I'm burnt out on paranormal she proves it can still be fresh, fast and addictive.

I'm not really one for the witch/mage/demon trope in romance, but this was very well done, and the characters were extremely well developed, even in the short space of a novella. I wouldn't mind continuing on with this series, if there are more. I might check into that next payday...
