I greatly enjoyed Bk 2 in this series. In this book, Jihan and Kastan continue to deal with court intrigue, betrayal, war, and treasonous actions. It is heart-wrenching at times, but the love between these two men plus the love and support of family, friends, and community makes it all worthwhile. Their love is something so special that it feels fated and beyond ordinary relationships. There is a lot of passion in their relationship, but it is mostly closed-door. Although the book is listed as YA, it can easily be enjoyed by adults and the MCs are adults. I also liked the pacing of the story, as intense scenes were often interspersed with peaceful scenes of home and family.
There are some magical elements that are just enough to keep a mythical, sweeping feel about the kingdom. The last third of the book is actually a collection of short stories that continue the tale, but in happier, peaceful times with very low angst. It is a perfect addition to complete the story. I don't know if there will be more from this world, but there are hints about the next generation preparing for their future adult responsibilities as kingdom leaders. My one minor thought is that the book could have benefitted from some additional editing, but it is not enough to detract from my great enjoyment of the book. I hope to read more from this world.
