Rate this book
Description:

A DOG NAMED LEAF is a New York Times Best Seller

A big-hearted and undeniably appealing memoir about a man and his dog. After authoring thirteen successful books that tell other people’s stories about the human-animal bond, Allen is ready to tell his own story—a remarkable journey with a highly intuitive but troubled dog who literally saved Allen’s life.

The American Society of Journalist and Authors (ASJA) has selected A DOG NAMED LEAF by Minnesota authors Allen Anderson with Linda Anderson (Globe Pequot/Lyons Press) as one of the winners of the prestigious 2013 ASJA Awards in the Lifestyle/Memoir category. It’s the story of how one man and one dog came together at exactly the right time for miracles to occur. This award is like the Academy Awards for authors in that it is given by your peers. Some of the best writers in the country submitted books for consideration. http://asja.org/for-writers/annual-wr...

It takes courage to share your story. I also think to share the deep love of a pet takes courage. The fact that Allen, being a man, shares his deepest fears and also his amazing love for Leaf makes this book truly inspiring. We've heard many stories of the connection between women and dogs, or children and pets, but to hear Allen share his deepest thoughts and biggest fears, as well as, his devotion and love for Leaf touched me deeply.

As I read the last page of his book I wanted to weep. I wanted to weep for those that never experience a connection like Allen and Leaf have. I wanted to weep in happiness for Allen and his recovery. I wanted to weep for the courage it took for Allen to share this remarkable story that some may find hard to believe at times. But I know it is real as I've experienced some profound moments with my own dogs, just like Allen has with Leaf.

If you've ever doubted animals have souls, this book will open your heart and mind to truly believing we are all connected. You will never doubt again. Your life will be enriched far beyond what you could have ever imagined and you will have author Allen Anderson to thank for it.

Leaf by Allen and Linda Anderson tells the true story of a man facing life-threatening brain surgery and the love and life lessons learns from his dog, Leaf. Leaf is an awesome dog! My dog, Abby, and Leaf would be good friends.

I found out about Leaf in my current issue of BEST FRIENDS magazine and LOVED it. If you have a dog, had a dog or are between dogs, you will be able to relate well to this book. For you it is a must read! God’s blessing to your wife and you, Mr. Anderson, and give Leaf a treat and a belly rub for me!

This is one of the books my husband and I differ on. He loved it but I found myself having to plow through. The majority of the book is about Allen and his brain surgery. It does contain some issues that the dog had when they first got it from the shelter and how the dog improved in time. The dog inspired Allen to persevere, not give up and to face his fears. I was bored with it and enjoyed other dog books much more.

I loved this book. It highlights something I've always believed, that there is far more going on in the mind of a dog than most people think. It's a terrific book for anyone that's ever had a rescue dog and knows the problems and pitfalls along that path, as well as the reward that awaits when you give your heart completely to a new dog. Allen Anderson's journey with Leaf is a wonderful story and I'm very happy that he chose to share it with us.

Any dog owner or animal lover can really understand the message that Allen is trying to purvey. There is a connection between animal and human albeit spiritual connection. The author is going through so many changes in his life and Leaf (his fur best friend) is his constant and keeps him grounded through his trials and triumphs. so heart-warming. Please read and just get that all-over good feeling too after finishing.

I was thoroughly engaged by this story of mutual healing. Cocker Spaniel Leaf came into Allen's life at just the right time. As Leaf helps Allen deal with anxieties about his upcoming brain surgery, Allen gently helps Leaf transform from a fearful dog to a friendly, confident and happy companion. Lovely true tale.

Throughly enjoyed reading this book. Although leaf came with baggage, his life with the Andersons improved all of their lives. His pictures reminded me of my wonderful cocker spaniel, Eddie, whom I dearly loved. But overall this is a story about how an animal can enrich and improve your life.

Love this book.

This was a great book. Leaf was a little feisty at first, until he realized that he needed the Anderson's as much as they need him to help heal them. It is amazing what animals and humans can accomplish when they set their minds to do just that.

A very unusual book about the spiritual connections and healing from trauma of both the author and his dog. This very thoughtful and well written memoir is both personal and inspirational. Recommended to every pet owner who knows their dog is a true soul mate and understands the power of unconditional love to heal both human hearts and canine’s.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

This is a touching and heartwarming story. I loved it!

I am not one for reading many true life stories, but when the author contacted me about reading this book, I decided to try it. I am glad I did. Unfortunately, due to my rather large reading list, it has taken me quite a while to get to read it, for which I am truly sorry.

This story took me on an emotional roller coaster ride. I am a highly emotional person when it comes to animals anyway. I have had my share of pets over the years (four dogs, one feral (turned tame) cat, a rabbit and a hamster. Oh, and some gupies - fish) and, although I currently don't have any at the moment, I would love to have either another dog or cat. Unfortunately, it is not possible at this time as I cannot afford to have one.
Nevertheless, I fell in love with Leaf, who has a fantastic character. This dog has not had an easy life up until the Anderson's adopt him, and reading about their experiences with him made me laugh and cry. Gaining the trust of an abused or wild animal is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have. The affection and love they share is more precious because it takes bravery to trust after being hurt. Leaf is one of those dogs that you wish you had found at the pound. However, not many people would have been brave to take on Leaf with all his issues. The Anderson's are that brave. This story is a mix of heartwarming and touching events, together with some very sad ones. However, it is mostly a story of hope, love and happiness. Animals are a gift; I believe they have souls and when they give their trust and love, we should grasp it and hold on to it for dear life.

Allen Anderson has written a deeply touching story that captured my heart. I loved the photographs that were sprinkled throughout. They gave the story a visual insight into Leaf's character. I did feel that the story, although well written, to be a little slow paced for my taste. However, I am used to reading fiction, which is embellished to include fast paced action. A slower pace is sometimes good for the soul. I would definitely consider reading more books written by him in the future.

I highly recommend this book if you love true life stories, memoirs or stories about dogs/animals. - Lynn Worton

I love a good dog story --in memoir, fiction, or education. I began to have doubts about this one when the couple decided to go home and talk to their other animals before they decided to bring Leaf home from the animal shelter. Then when they tried to communicate with him through telepathy, I gave up on this book.
