Dangerous Work: Diary of an Arctic Adventure makes this account available for the first time in a beautiful facsimile edition that reproduces Conan Doyle’s notebook pages in his own elegant hand, accompanied by his copious illustrations. With humor and grace, Conan Doyle provides a vivid account of a long-vanished way of life at sea. His careful detailing of the experience of arctic whaling is equal parts fascinating and alarming, revealing the dark workings of the later days of the British whaling industry. About the author

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

Wir kennen Sir Arthur Conan Doyle vorrangig für seine Kriminalgeschichten um den genialen Ermittler Sherlock Holmes. Auch hat sich herumgesprochen, dass der Schriftsteller und Mediziner einen Hang zum Spiritismus hatte. Weniger bekannt ist, dass sich Conan Doyle als junger Medizinstudent als Schiffsarzt auf einem Walfänger betätigte.

Unser Glück ist, dass er dort Tagebuch führte und uns seine Eindrücke von seiner Reise in die Polarregion hinterlassen hat. Der vorliegende Band enthält neben Conan Doyles Aufzeichnungen eine Einleitung der Herausgeber, zahlreiche Abbildungen des Originaltagebuchs inklusive Conan Doyles Zeichnungen sowie einen ausführlichen Anhang mit Essays über dessen Reise ins Nordpolarmeer, den Walfang und die Tierwelt der Arktis.

Eins dürfte klar sein: Für Tierliebhaber ist das Buch mitunter keine unproblematische Lektüre. Zwar äußert Conan Doyle Schuldgefühle und Mitleid für die erlegten Wale und Robben, aber er hält sich nicht bei der Beschreibung der Jagd zurück und lässt auch erkennen, dass er doch mit Begeisterung bei der Arbeit war. Denn seine Arbeit beschränkte sich keineswegs auf die des Schiffarztes.

Dennoch ist das Tagebuch ein interessantes und wichtiges Zeitdokument, das durch das schriftstellerische Talent des Autors abgesehen von dem oben genannten Aspekt vergnüglich zu lesen ist. Vor allem Conan Doyles Humor ist hervorzuheben: Mich hatte das Buch bereits durch seinen Titel als Leserin gewonnen: Mit welcher Unbekümmertheit er berichtet, er sei heute dreimal ins Polarmeer gefallen! Seine Kameraden gaben ihm daraufhin auch den Spitznamen „großer Eistaucher“. Überhaupt fügte sich der Autor problemlos in die Mannschaft ein und erzählt allerlei Anekdoten von seinen Kameraden.

Zusammen mit dem Zusatzmaterial – vor allem den Abbildungen der Originalseiten des Tagebuchs – stellt das Buch eine absolut lohnende Lektüre dar, solange man nicht über die Abschlachterei vor allem der Robben nachdenkt.

la frase più truce: «è un mestiere maledetto quello di fracassare la testa alle piccole disgraziate mentre ti guardano in faccia con i loro grandi occhioni neri».
la più snob: «l'erba verde sulla costa dopo quasi 6 mesi senza vederla appare come una bella novità. ma le case sono ributtanti. detesto il volgare ronzio umano e mi piacerebbe tornare sulle lastre di ghiaccio galleggianti».
quella da applauso: «oggi ho il permesso del capitano di andare da queen's con alcuni dei più grossi sottufficiali per vedere se riusciamo a fare una rissa».
cacciare balene, foche, orsi polari e narvali oggi fa (immenso) orrore, ma nemmeno ieri era un pranzo di gala.

2012 року дослідники випадково знайшли щоденник Артура Конана Дойля, який він вів 1880 року — під час служби лікарем на китобійному судні. На перший погляд — неймовірна знахідка! Дойль серед полярної криги! Звісно, на момент написання щоденника йому 20 років, він ще вчиться на лікаря (завершив 3-ій рік навчання), ще не знає, що стане видатним письменником. Але тим цікавіше: побачити становлення письменника! Адже кілька років після цієї подорожі Дойль опублікує перше оповідання, поміркований успіх якого спонукає його повністю віддатися письменницькому фаху. І щоб ви не губилися в здогадках, чи полярна подорож Дойля має до цього стосунок, одразу напишу: мала — і неабиякий! По-перше, Дойль дебютував з містичним оповіданням про арктичних китобоїв. Фактично, він прикрасив паранормальним "мереживом" реальні будні життя китобоїв. По-друге, ставши відомим письменником, Дойль роздавав поради молодшим колегам: Пізнайте життя! Наприклад, відправтеся в рейс китобійного судна! Не знаючи життя, не маю гори досвіду за плечима, не станеш письменником!"

Ці факти нам радісно повідомляють упорядники щоденників в передмові та післямові. Причому обидва тексти співпадають на 55%. І лише той факт, що вони знаходяться на "відстані" 400+ сторінок не дозволяє одразу помітити обману та хитрості.

Втім, якби ж це було найбільшою проблемою упорядників! Насправді, головний їхній обман зовсім в іншому.
Щоденники Дойля настільки нудні і нецікаві, що якби їх не знайшли, то світ літератури від цього нічого не втратив би. Іншими словами, пробувши і невідомості 130 років, щоденники Дойля могли там залишатися й наступні 130 років...

По-перше, записи Дойля сухі і скупі. Переважно, він "звітує" про події дня, майже не додаючи нічого зі своїх думок чи переживань. А самі записи стосуються лише промислу: полювання на тюленів та китів. Так, Дойль перелічує кількість впольованих тварин, деколи згадує кумедні історії, які трапилися під час полювання, але це все... Хоча, як виявилося, корабельний лікар мав в рейсі не так багато роботи, а тому його основна роль — розважати капітана. Так, через британський соціальний устрій капітан не мав заводити "панібратства" ні з матросами, ні з іншими офіцерами: вони всі його підлеглі. Але ж вісім місяців серед полярних вод... З кимось говорити хочеться! І цю роль й виконував лікар: він стояв за межами корабельної ієрархії (бо нікому не мав віддавати наказів, ні від кого їх не приймав), а тому капітан міг з ним вести милі бесіди. Дойль про це згадує! Але в спогадах... В щоденнику команда та капітан майже відсутні.

По-друге, сухість нотаток Дойля могли б компенсувати примітки упорядників. І вони дійсно дуже пожвавлюють текст — на початку, коли йдеться про вихід в море. Але далі приміток стає все менше й менше, поки вони не зникають повністю. А там, де вони залишаються, автори наводять розлогі цитати зі спогадів Дойля, які згодом — дослівно! — повторюватимуть в післямові. Фактично, один і той же текст автори "тягають" за собою весь твір — з передмови він переходить в післямову, куди ж потрапляють і примітки до щоденників. Так от — бо я відволікся — упорядники вирішили не заглиблюватися в повсякдення китобоїв, а Дойль про це теж не пише. Тому текст перетворюється на реєстр трофеїв з уточненнями упорядників...

На додачу до цього сама книга доволі химерно оформлена. 200+ сторінок — це фотокопії / скани щоденників Дойля. Тобто понад дві сотні сторінок гортаємо написані від руки записи Дойля. Ви не вмієте читати його почерк? І не знаєте моряцької англійської? Не біда! Далі йде переклад щоденників. "Навіщо ж давати ці скани?" — спитаєте ви. Що ж, вся справа в doodles, які малював Дойль на полях щоденника. Це цікаві замальовки — про полювання на тюленів, про корабель, затертий кригою, про полювання на китів... Так, через деякий час картинки починають повторюватися, але вони урізноманітнюють текст. От тільки це малюнки "на полях" (частіше — в тексті, але суть не в цьому): їх не так багато, а тому — якщо поліграфічно важко їх вставити в переклад щоденника, то подайте їх разом. Щоправда, тоді з книги "випаде" дві сотні сторінок (малюнки вмістяться на 10-20 сторінках). І книга на 250 сторінок виглядатиме вже не так солідно... Упорядники додали сюди ще оповідання Дойля про китобоїв, його дві публічні лекції про китобійний промисел та Арктику, а також оповідання про... Шерлока Голмса, де фігурує гарпунер. Що ж, вони намагалися зробити книгу "пухлішою" зі всіх сил.

Тому ця книга не принесе радості нікому: ні шанувальникам творчості Дойля, ні тим, хто цікавиться полярними експедиціями. Це звичайні щоденники, які написані занадто коротко, щоб дізнатися більше про Дойля чи полярні подорожі.

An absolutely fabulous book. If you are in any way an Arthur Conan Doyle fan then I cannot recommend this book enough. It is one of his earliest works, presumably never intended for publishing seeing as he had ample opportunity to do so himself, and yet it still retains the fun and tight narrative that he employed in his fiction later on.

The book revolves around his 6/7 month journey through the Arctic on a whaling expedition to bring oil, blubber and bone back to sell. Naturally, there are some graphic depictions of events throughout so if you are especially sensitive to animal cruelty then maybe this isn't the book to read. It does help to remember that this was in a completely different era and that it wasn't for sport but for keeping people in work and able to survive. Arthur himself does say numerous times throughout what a shame it is to have to make the 'poor brutes' suffer.

He maintained an official log for the SS Hope but what we have here is his own personal recollections of the entire journey with no day missed, despite how dismal and uneventful some days were. So while we are given the statistics on longitude and latitude, the wind direction, the haul of the day and specific events, we also get an insight into a 20 year old Doyle and how the whole experience shaped him.

Some of the highlights for me were:

- His recounting of a tale from their Captain of how he almost lost his life in London many years back.
- His description of one of the crew of the ship; a 'handsome outlaw' that would stalk around the ship mysteriously and rarely say a word to anyone but had a vicious temper on him. The vivid description was worthy of a piece of fiction and you almost wanted him to be a main character in another Arctic story.
- Arthur's description of a dream he had that is just dripping with anxiety. Anyone that has ever had a dream about missing out on an exam will be able to empathise completely.
- His attachment to a sea snail - 'John Thomas' - that he catches from the Arctic depths.

It's a great account of whaling and Arctic travel in the late 1800's as well as seeing Arthur's early encounters in his medical capacity.

On a more broad view, the book is beautifully put together. It is a nice coffee table size, not exactly made for portability but it can be done. It has a dust jacket and a blank cover underneath. There is an introduction describing how the journey came about and the general impact it had on Arthur's life before going into the actual content. It is split into three journals and they are all presented as facsimiles of the actual journals themselves. For a medico in training, Arthur has surprisingly neat handwriting that isn't too difficult to read once you get used to the repetition of certain words and his style of writing. But for ease of reading, the whole journal has been annotated in the second part along with numerous footnotes to elaborate on certain points with explanation or further source background. It also includes two letters that he sent home to his mum during the timescale.

Arthur would draw several doodles that appear within the journal in black and white or colour. Ones that have been folded over within the journal are shown on a separate page.

After the journal and annotation, there is a section about how the Arctic moulded Arthur afterwards and how it would show up in his works and his life. They also include two articles that he wrote about the Arctic and two pieces of fiction – The Captain and the “Pole Star” and the Holmes story The Adventure of Black Peter – to demonstrate how the experience would find its way into his later works.

Overall, it is a fantastic addition to the Arthur Conan Doyle collection and a real gem for insight into this fascinating man. There is the question of whether he would have wanted it published as he obviously never did so himself but I think it is a positive reflection on his wild, humorous and jovial personality. A definite must read.

Questo libro è una perla perché ci da la possibilità di leggere il diario originale dello scrittore Conan Doyle, il creatore del detective più famoso al mondo Sherlock Holmes, che a 20 anni decise di imbarcarsi sulla Hope, una baleniera, come medico di bordo. Non solo troveremo il diario dell'autore ma anche i disegni che lui stesso faceva durante questa straordinaria avventura nei freddi mari artici. Inoltre sono presenti due articoli su questa impresa e anche un racconto di Sherlock Holmes che tratta dell'omicidio di un capitano di una baleniera, ovvero Il capitano della Pole Star.

Scoprire questo lato avventuroso di Conan Doyle è stato intrigante e interessante, il giovane medico decide a 20 anni di prendersi una pausa dalle fatiche da studente e si imbarca, per sostituire un collega, su una baleniera. Certo le descrizioni di come venivano trucidate le povere foche (prese letteralmente a bastonate in testa), uccelli e balene non è entusiasmante (uccidono anche gli orsi polari) e quindi sconsiglio la lettura agli amanti degli animali. Quello che emerge e colpisce è quel genuino spirito di avventura che avevano quei marinai e che lo stesso Conan riesce a trasmetterci, quel senso di voglia di superare e scoprire l'ignoto che è sempre insito in ognuno di noi esseri umani. Credo che gli unici scrittori che abbiano avuto esperienze su una baleniera siano stati Conan Doyle e Herman Melville se non erro.

Im Jahr 1880 heuerte der, damals noch Medizinstudent, junge Arthus Conan Doyle bei enem Walfänger als Schiffsarzt an. Auf seiner abenteuerlichen Reise erfährt er nicht nur viel über den gefährlichen Beruf der Walfänger, sondern erlebt was es bedeutet ein Leben auf hoher See zu führen. Seine Gedanken und Erkenntnisse hält Conan Doyle dabei in seinem Tagebuch fest. Das Buch wird außerdem ergänzt um zwei Essays von Jon Lellenberg & Daniel Stashower und von Alexander Pechmann. Zudem findet man in dem Buch die Lebenschronik von Arthus Conan Doyle und seine vier Schriften über die Arktis.

Bestimmt ist den meisten von euch der Name Arthur Conan Doyle ein Begriff - der Schaffer der weltweit beliebt und bekannten Figur Sherlock Holmes. Ich selbst kannte von Doyle nur seine Sherlock-Geschichte und muss zugeben, das ich gar nicht daran gedacht habe, er könnte noch etwas anderes geschrieben haben, da seine Detektivgeschichten schließlich sehr erfolgreich waren. Eher durch Zufall bin ich auf dieses Buch gestoßen und es hat mich direkt neugierig gemacht.

Wie ich oben schon erwähnt habe, besteht dass Buch nicht nur aus dem Tagebuch und ich finde die Zusammensetzung der unterschiedlichen Texte wirklich klasse, da man einen tiefen Einblick in das Leben des gefeierten Schriftstellers erhalten hat. Besonders das Tagebuch übte eine große Faszination auf mich aus, auch wenn ich es gleichzeitig etwas schade fand, dass es manchmal eher mehr an ein Logbuch als ein Tagebuch, in dem man Gedanken und Gefühle festhält, erinnert. So listet Doyle beinahe jeden Tag Temperatur, Wetter und/oder Anzahl der gefangengen Robben auf. Auf der anderen Seite war ich aber auch erschrocken, was für ein grausamer Beruf Walfänger doch ist. Sehr blutig und sehr gefährlich.

Auch die Essays und und Doyles Schriften haben mir gut gefallen, aber ich muss doch gestehen, dass mir das Buch am Ende auch ein klein wenig lang wurde. Als großer Fan von Arthus Conan Doyle sollte man es auf jeden Fall lesen, die Sherlock-Fans werden mit dem Buch aber nicht auf ihre Kosten kommen. Besonders erwähnen möchte ich noch die Zeichnungen aus dem Tagebuch, die ebenfalls im Buch angeführt sind. Diese haben das Buch, meiner Meinung nach, gut abgerundet und zu einer zauberhaften Edition gemacht.

FAZIT:
Ich werfe gerne mal einen Blick auf das Leben von bekannten Schriftstellern und dafür war dieses Buch hier absolut perfekt. Das Tagebuch von Arthur Conan Doyle hat mir gut gefallen, mich überrascht und erschrocken, auch wenn es mir manchmal ein wenig zu sehr einem Logbuch glich. Für Arthur Conan Doyle-Fans ist das Buch aber auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen!

A. C. Doyle aveva vent’anni – quasi ventuno – e stava preparando un difficile esame di medicina, quando un amico gli chiese:

“La prossima settimana ti va d’imbarcarti su una baleniera per sei mesi come medico di bordo, al posto mio?”

Arthur fece la scelta che qualunque altro studente avrebbe fatto: accettò e s’imbarcò. (Questo è portare le scuse per non studiare ai massimi livelli, chapeu!)

Questo libro riporta, oltre a dei cenni biografici, il diario di bordo che Conan Doyle tenne durante quel viaggio, un paio di suoi articoli sull’esperienza e sulla sua affascinata visione dell’artico, e due suoi racconti che vedono tra i loro protagonisti capitani di baleniere, medici di bordo e ramponieri; per la precisione “Il capitano della Pole Star” e “L’Avventura di Black Peter”.
Il volume è inoltre arricchito di parecchi schizzi, che illustrano le avventure descritte e che rivelano la mano più che discreta dell’autore nel disegnare; le figure umane saranno magari un po’ elementari, ma le navi sono davvero ben fatte.

È una bella lettura, se siete fan del buon vecchio Holmes e siete curiosi di saperne di più sul suo autore: Conan Doyle era un uomo notevole, per quel che ne avevo letto finora: avventuroso, leale, ricco di senso dell’umorismo e di desiderio di conoscere, e questo libro lo conferma. Si era fatto apprezzare sulla nave, come uomo e come marinaio, tanto che l’anno successivo il capitano gli propose d’imbarcarsi di nuovo; lui, benché avesse amato quella vita e le distese gelide dell’artico, rifiutò per terminare gli studi. Se avesse invece accettato, chissà, magari il detective più famoso di tutti i tempi non sarebbe mai nato.
Al di là della caccia alle balene e alle foche, che per quanto considerato oggi crudele e inaccettabile aveva a quei tempi il suo scopo e la sua giustificazione, è interessante anche notare lo spirito animalista dei vittoriani:

“Che meraviglia quel falco!” BANG!
“Strane e mai viste prima quelle due anatre!” BANG! BANG!
“Oh, peccato non esserci stato, quando hanno sparato a quell’orso!”

Quindi, se siete sensibili all’argomento, vi ho avvisati. Non vogliate meno bene al buon Arthur, se quando era ragazzo aveva il grilletto facile; pensate che una volta anziano non lo avrebbe certo rifatto, troppo preso dallo scambiare fatine di carta ritagliata per creature vere (e io proprio non mi capacito; ok credere nello spiritismo, ma le fatine di carta…)

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle viene ricordato soprattutto come un grande scrittore, i cui racconti continuano ancora oggi ad appassionare generazioni di lettori e lettrici, basti pensare alle avventure del suo personaggio più riuscito, il celeberrimo investigatore privato Sherlock Holmes. Ridurre tuttavia la sua intera biografia alla sola ideazione del sopracitato detective rischia seriamente di tralasciare alcune importanti considerazioni circa la natura estremamente poliedrica dell'autore, un fattore che invece sembra non essere sfuggito ai suoi contemporanei; osservando infatti l'incisione dell'epitaffio sulla lapide sepolcrale si vedono comparire i seguenti caratteri: "Steel true Blade Straight Arthur Conan Doyle Knight Patriot physician & man of letters".
In gioventù Doyle si imbarca come medico di bordo sulla baleniera Hope, trascorrendo diversi mesi tra gli spessi e gelidi ghiacci dell'Artico alla ricerca degli sfuggenti cetacei, un'esperienza che di certo lo condiziona fortemente, tanto da indurlo a trascriverla sotto forma di diario di viaggio. Ormai alla fine dell'Ottocento la caccia alle balene subisce un evidente declino, ciononostante attraverso queste pagine è ancora possibile scorgere un mondo di uomini valorosi che con ostinazione sfidano le insidie del profondo nord per guadagnarsi da vivere. I decided to read this after seeing one of the other reviews. It's an unusual addition to the Conan Doyle collection.

It is clear from these writings that for the rest of his life Conan Doyle viewed his arctic journey as one of his most significant life experiences. Throughout his life he showed a disposition towards sports and other physical activity, and he relished the opportunities this voyage gave him for hunting and strenuous exercise. It must be said that his attitude towards wildlife was typical of someone of his time and upbringing, and can be summed up as "If it moves, shoot it." I was amused though to read the end of a letter Conan Doyle wrote to his mother, from the port of Lerwick in the Shetland Isles. His ship was based in the fishing port of Peterhead, and the Peterhead whalers seem to have had a keen rivalry with whaling crews from the larger port of Dundee, about 100 miles to the south. Conan Doyle ends his letter by saying "I have got the Captain's leave to go with a few of the biggest of the petty officers to the Queen's [Hotel] today to see if we can't have a row", by which he meant a punch up with the Dundonians. I wonder how many mothers would welcome their 20 year old son signing off with the news he is about to go and start a bar-room brawl?

Conan Doyle's log of his whaling trip forms the biggest part of this volume, but it also includes several other pieces of writing about the arctic, including two pieces of arctic inspired short fiction, The Captain of the Polestar, and the Sherlock Holmes tale, The Adventure of Black Peter.

One thing I would highlight is that the pages of the edition I read reproduced Conan Doyle's diary entries in facsimile form, so that you are reading cursive handwriting. It's easy to read though.

Ein Medizinstudent heuert als 20 Jähriger auf einem Walfänger als "Schiffsarzt" an. Soweit so (vermutlich) ungewöhnlich. Auch dass dieser junge Mann ein Tagebuch über seine Erlebnisse verfasst, scheint in die Zeit zu passen.
Wirklich Beachtenswert wird dieser Bericht wohl eher dadurch, dass sein Autor Jahre später beginnt, eine Reihe von Geschichten zu verfassen, die das Genre Krimi wie kaum ein anderer beeinflussen/prägen.
Der Bericht lässt sich sehr gut lesen, ist eloquent und zum Teil mit großen Humor geschrieben und die knapp 200 Seiten, inklusive diverser Kartenausschnitte und Kopien aus dem Originaldokumente eignen sich hervorragend, um einen Nachmittag lang einen Einblick in das Leben eines Walfängers zu erhalten.
Außerdem im Buch enthalten sind einige spätere Aufsätze Doyles zu seiner Reise und eine Sherlock Holmes Geschichte, die Doyle 24 Jahre nach seiner Reise veröffentlichen ließ, in der sich aber viele Eindrücke aus seinem eigenen Abenteuer erahnen lassen.

Für einen regnerischen Nachmittag Ideal!
Außerdem sind die mare-Bücher hervorragend gedruckt und gebunden und stellen einen echten Hingucker in jedem Bücherregal dar.

Interessant und voller Witz berichtet Arthur Conan Doyle, Erfinder von Sherlock Holmes, von seiner Zeit als Schiffsarzt auf einem Walfänger. Auch wenn mal nicht viel passierte war ich von dem Tagebuch immer gut unterhalten. Die Bilder von den, mit Zeichnungen versehenen, originalen Tagebuchseiten sind dabei auch nochmal ein Highlight. Ansonsten hätte ich nicht unbedingt alles aus dem Anhang gebraucht und ein kürzeres Buch nur aus Vorwort, Bildern und dem Tagebuch vielleicht bevorzugt, aber der Hauptteil war ein großer Spaß.

Він міг за один день тричі впасти в Арктичний океан і написати про це між іншим, наче це дрібниця. Я знала його як батька де��ективів про Шерлока Голмса, автора «Загубленого світу», ну і ще трохи як пристрастного спірітуаліста, котрий вірив, що в його саду живуть феї. Тепер я познайомилась із Великим пірнальником Півночі. Це так його китобої прозвали за незграбність на льоду.

Сто сорок років тому до Конан Дойла, на той час двадцятирічного студента-медика, постукав знайомий і зненацька запропонував замість нього наступні півроку провести в Арктиці на китобійному кораблі на посаді лікаря. А нещодавно ілюстровані щоденники з цієї подорожі знайшли в Британській бібліотеці, розшифрували і видали з розгорнутими коментарями під назвою «Небезпечна робота».

Це - прекрасна можливість зазирнути у справжні тодішні будні моряків і перейнятись романтикою мандрів (залишивши, звісно, сучасні стандарти захисту тварин і оцінюючи ситуацію з точки зору людини того часу)

Арктика Конан Дойла шокувала своєю неочікуваною близькістю - ось ти наче щойно вийшов з порту на Шетландських островах і ось тебе вже зранку будять крижини, що стукають об борти корабля. В такій виправі перші місяці полювали на тюленів, згодом плили за «рибою» - так називали великих гренландських китів. Виходили в океан наприкінці зими, повертались приблизно у вересні, тож в Британії жило багато чоловіків, які з дитинства не бачили літа чи як достигає урожай, а волохатий початок кукурудзи берегли як скарб.

Сер Артур (на той час ще звісно ніякий не сер, але енергійний і сильний молодик) хапався за будь-яку справу, у перший же день полювання гайнув було і собі з усією командою за тюленями. Та капітан наказав йому лишитись, бо без досвіду стрибати по крижинам небезпечно. Майбутній псьменник у розпачі сів на замерзлий фальш-борт, з прокльонами стукав ногами об дерево і щойно корабель нахилився на хвилях шубовснув у крижану воду. Коротше, капітан вирішив, що безпечніше падати у воду не з корабля, а з крижини і дав дозвіл йти з усіма на полювання. З того часу Конан Дойл падав в океан ще багато разів

Для мене навіть думка про крижану воду - паралізуюча. Що це за люди були такі? Він собі впав з крижини, борсався, хоч тіло почало німіти, зумів сам видертись на гладкий лід і повернутись до корабля, за цей час одяг замерзав наче обладунки і треба було чекати, коли відтане, щоб роздягнутись. І вже знову готовий до полювання (хоча раз він таки полежав кілька днів у лихоманці).

Хоча трохи поживши в Англії я бачу, що тут зовсім інше відношення до холоду: взимку діти приходять в школу у гольфах (про шапки я звісно взагалі мовчу), зараз в листопаді ходять просто в легких літніх черевиках, під крижаним осіннім дощем вони ганяють м‘яча на фізькультурі і цілком нормально почуваються на морозі. Тож підозрюю, і в минулому люди, яких бабусі не кутали влітку в хустки, були більш підготовлені до низьких температур і суворого клімату

Окремо Арктика вразила Дойла чистим повітрям, тишею і відчуттям самотності. Хоча часами вони і ходили на вечері в гості на інші кораблі та більшість днів складались з доволі нудного і виснажливого неробстства, бо все залежало від погоди. Не з того боку вітер подув і вуаля, корабель відрізано від «риби» крижаним бар‘єром, стій на місці і чекай:

Середа, 21 квітня
«Абсолютно немає чим зайнятися, крім нарікань, тож ми й нарікали. Найнеприємніший із усіх днів, які я пригадую на кораблі, на морі жахливі хвилі. Жодних тюленів і взагалі нічого, окрім огиди до життя»

І так тижнями:

«Не було чого робити і ми це здійснили»

Зате коли вже випадала нагода полювати на «рибу», вся команда за лічені хвилини стрибала у човни і махала веслами. Дойла капітан навіть запросив на наступний сезон працювати гарпунером - а це неабияка пропозиція, адже саме від вправності гарпунера залежала левова частка успіху.

Що стосується українського видання, то круто, що воно є і що добре перекладене. Власне книга складається з розшифрованих щоденників з коментарями (які часами навіть цікавіші за основний текст), самих щоденників з малюнками (в українському виданні ця частина, на жаль, в дуже поганій якості), оповідань та статей Конан Дойла, які створені під впливом цієї мандрівки.

Вже в цих щоденниках, за доволі скупими записами, відчувається талант оповідача із гарним почуттям гумору. Тому, насолоджуючись письмом Конан Дойла, я поринула в його спогади, листи та інтерв’ю. Він неймовірний, це людина з такою вірою в себе і цікавістю до життя, що я з його текстів як черпаком гребу силу і гарний настрій)

Как же порой не хватает таких книг. Это ПРОСТО дневники молодого парня, который бросил учебу в институте и отправился в поисках приключений на китобойном судне. Отличная книга о приключениях, также открывающая ситуации, которые во многом сформировали характер будущего автора книг о Шерлоке Холмсе

This is fascinating reading -- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's diary of his 5-month trek as ship's doctor on an Arctic whaler in 1880. He turned 21 on the voyage. The frank depiction of seal and whale hunting opens the modern reader's eye to a foreign era, as Doyle enthusiastically clubs baby seals along with the rest of the crew.

This book provides a transcript that accompanies the diaries, which is very helpful since his writing is not always terribly clear, and footnotes to provide additional valuable context. Doyle also included several sketches embedded in his diary that add its its charm and personality.

You can see the seeds of experiences and ideas that would later manifest in his Holmes stories.

Charming, yet still a bit disturbing. It's fun to be able to get inside Doyle's head a little bit and see through his eyes.

Sam gave me a gorgeous copy of Dangerous Work: Diary of an Arctic Adventure by Arthur Conan Doyle. What a neat look into Doyle’s life! The book includes facsimiles of the diary itself, so you can read the story in Doyle’s own handwriting (sometimes with a quill pen, sometimes with a fountain pen). He made a lot of illustrations, most of which are gory depictions of seal and whale hunting, but with occasional, beautiful drawings of ships or the crew members. In 1880 when Doyle sailed, the whaling industry was already waning, but it was still the livelihood of quite a few coastal towns, and the diary is a fascinating look at a time period that’s difficult to imagine today.

Description: In 1880 Arthur Conan Doyle, then a young medical student, embarked upon the “first real outstanding adventure” of his life, taking a berth as ship’s surgeon on an Arctic whaler. The voyage took him to unknown regions, showered him with dramatic experiences, and plunged him into dangerous work on the ice floes of the Arctic. “Viaje al Ártico” de Arthur Conan Doyle, es una bitácora de viaje en la época en donde Conan Doyle suspendió su preparación de licenciatura en medicina para enrolarse como medico en un barco ballenero cuya travesía seria la casa de ballenas, focas y especies muy cotizadas en la Europa del siglo XIX.
Una Travesía que duró 6 meses, Conan Doyle, no solo cumplió las labores de medico, si no mas bien se involucró en la dinámica del barco, cumpliendo tareas de cazador y otras franquicias. El entusiasmo de Conan Doyle fue tal que el Capitán del Hope le ofreció trabajo para otro posible viaje.
El diario de viaje muy bien documentado con las impresiones del joven Arthur, se puede apreciar cómo estos formaron y moldearon las ideas para expresarlos en relatos de historias tanto detectivescas como de aventuras y viajes. Ilustra las paginas con dibujos explicativos de la caza de ballenas, de focas y de fauna del Ártico.
Considero como una joya esta publicación de la etapa de la vida de Conan Doyle, ya que escapa - no completamente – a los trabajos posteriores como escritor.
Conan Doyle nos cuenta que estar en el Ártico es como estar en otro planeta, los colores se manifiestan en tonalidades de grises a blanco de una leve oscuridad a una luminosidad que no cambia en meses para el final cuando cambia las estación con la aparición de la primera estrella en el firmamento sosteniendo la mirada como un nuevo encuentro con el mundo que dejó.
Los cuatro relatos del Norte que acompañan esta edición, no es más que las reflexiones y la ficción para elaborar las experiencias y vivencias de su viaje al Ártico.

Un libro che non può mancare nella libreria degli appassionati di Arthur Conan Doyle. Si tratta del diario di questo inimitabile scrittore che racconta della sua esperienza come medico di bordo sulla baleniera Hope. Questo suo viaggio di sette mesi cambierà per sempre la sua vita e lo influenzerà nella scrittura dei romanzi.
Il lettore quindi è invitato a scoprire un aspetto poco noto ma fondamentale della vita di Arthur Conan Doyle, come la sua esperienza nella caccia alle foche e alle balene (che egli definisce "un mestiere brutale" e "un'orrenda profanazione" ma dice al tempo stesso che essa è necessaria per il sostentamento di numerose persone e attività), le difficoltà incontrate nel viaggio ma anche le letture dello scrittore e le conversazioni con i marinai.

"Прокинувся пізно, а волів би ще пізніше, ледарювання - сумний моральний стан."
"Мене запросили на борт "Екліпса" на обід із Лі Смітом і командою. Спершу їв черепаховий суп, свіжий ростбіф з картоплею, французькі боби в соусі, крохмальний пудинг і млинці з консервами, потім перейшли до вина і сигар. Звична їжа китобоя."

Что можно ждать от Арктических дневников молодого доктора, волею судьбы оказавшегося на китобойном судне? Оказалось, что очень много и очень разного: 1) Полосатиков, нарвалов, бутылконосов, тюленей и еще много-много всяких удивительных обитателей Арктики; 2) Метких, емких характеристик членов экипажа, ежедневной жизни судна, когда дни охоты чередуются с днями скуки и апатии; 3) Описания дружеских спаррингов, тонкостей приручения морской улитки, и других подробностей плавания; 4) Жестоких сцен охоты; 5) Отличный страшный рассказ о девушке - призраке. Кроме него, в книге есть опубликованное эссе об Арктике и рассказ о Шерлоке Холмсе, где участвуют капитан и гарпунёр китобойного судна. Т.о. можно видеть как развивался авторский стиль и как умело он пользовался своими дневниками, переработав быстрые заметки в отличные законченные рассказы и эссе.

Potser el diari de l'expedició balenera de Conan Doyle no és tan interessant com semblaria a priori. Potser és més una curiositat per a completistes. La preciosa edició de Confluencias, però, amb tot d'il·lustracions i fragments del text original fa que hom la llegeixi amb curiositat.
La incorporació de diferents relats al final del volum on es veu reflectit la vida marinera de Conan Doyle és el que fa alçar el vol a aquest "Viaje al Ártico". El conte de Sherlock Holmes deu ser dels més fluixos de tot el cànon, però la resta de vivències àrtiques i, sobretot, aquesta joia que és "El capitán del Pole Star" (una història de fantasmes a alta mar) conviden a l'aventura al més pur estil shackletonià.

"¿Quién te dice que no eres una obra de arte sino sólo fríos, inhóspitos e inmensos campos de hielo? Yo, que te he conocido en calma y entre tormentas, te digo que eres grandiosa y bondadosa".

Un libro muy completo y muy interesante si eres fan de Doyle y quieres informarte más sobre su pasado. Aprendes mucho sobre el, sobre acontecimientos históricos, náuticos y de biología. Por mí parte, no es lo que estaba buscando por eso me he aburrido mucho leyendo los cuatro relatos del norte, pero ha sido toda una experiencia.

Definetly a book that shouldn't be bought in Kindle version to fully enjoy it in my opinion. My copy had a part of the book repeated, once at the start and once when there were about 80 pages till the end. Interesting story, although pretty repetitive.

Loved the book that is actually a diary of the author when he being still a student got a job on an Arctic whaling vessel. All way long during reading I had a feeling that I’m talking to a young Arthur Doyle - and that was quite fun.
