Cecile Inglessis Margellos and Rika Lesser, Dimoula’s award-winning translators, have re-created her style’s uncanny effect of refraction: when plunged into the water of her poetry, all these bent words suddenly and astonishingly appear perfectly straight.

«Υπάρχουν τόσες λέξεις που ονειρεύονται
μια σύντομη, άδετη, ζωή με τη φωνή σου.

Μίλα.
Έχουμε τόση θάλασσα μπροστά μας.
Εκεί που τελειώνουμε εμείς
αρχίζει η θάλασσα.»

Πως να διαλέξεις ανάμεσα στα ποιήματα της Κικής Δημουλά που είναι όλα ένα κι ένα;! Η ποίηση της Δημουλά αγγίζει κομμάτια της ψυχής και της καρδιάς βαθιά κρυμμένα μέσα μας αναδεικνύοντας μελαγχολίες και πόνους που μέχρι τώρα μπορεί να μην είχαμε αφήσει να βγουν στην επιφάνεια.

Πιο συγκεκριμένα διάλεξα να διαβάσω αυτή την έκδοση λόγω του ενδιαφέροντος μου στην μετάφραση και ειδικά στην δυσκολία του να μεταφράσει κάποιος ποίηση που οι λέξεις κρύβουν βαθύτερα νοήματα που ίσως να μη μπορούν να μεταφραστούν σε άλλες γλώσσες.

Οι δυο μεταφράστριες αυτού του τόμου έχουν κάνει πολύ καλή δουλειά κυρίως λόγω της συχνής επικοινωνίας τους με τη Δημουλά. Στον πρόλογο συζητούν κάποιες από τις δυσκολίες αυτής της μετάφρασης ενώ στον επίλογο δικαιολογούν κάποιες από τις επιλογές του. Ενώ κι εγώ είχα αναρωτηθεί κάποιες φορές για αυτές τις επιλογές ή είχα σκεφτεί ποιες λέξεις θα είχα επιλέξει εγώ στη θέση τους, ήταν εν τέλη πολύ ενδιαφέρον να μας παρέχουν την διαδικασία σκέψεων τους που οδήγησε στην παρούσα μετάφραση.

Απόλαυσα επίσης το χρονολόγιο στο τέλος με κάποια highlights από τη ζωή αυτής της μεγάλης ποιήτριας.

I bought this a couple of years ago whilst on a trip to Greece. It was sitting in a pile of Greek literature in a bookstore in Chania, Crete.

Dimoula speaks Greek, and I French, but we met in English. And what a very lovely encounter that was.

I always thought I was not a fan of poetry. And now I think I am… Or maybe I am just a fan of Kiki Dimoula. Either way, this was miraculously beautiful and sweet and harsh and devastating.

I know I will be coming back over and over again as the years pass and I remember to treat myself to glimpses and pieces of Dimoula’s magnificent writing and images.

It is an unparalleled act of kindness to the English speaking world that Cecile Inglessis Margellos translated Kiki Dimoula's delicate and searing poetry with such tenacity and intricate knowledge of the source and translated languages. Dimoula's work stands by itself in the male-dominated Greek poetic sphere not only for its unapologetic female perspective, but for its daring to question the great Greek poetic tradition. Incredible.

Reading these poems by Kiki Dimoula made me feel as if I was stepping into a conversation with an old friend. I love the way she sees and speaks the world. Many props as well to the translator of this book, who deserves accolades for bringing Dimoula's delicate work to life in English. An amazing job by both poet and translator-poet. It's lucky for us that we have such artists in the world.
