Quick summary
Cassie Christo, a San Diego doctor, returns to her mother's home in Mexico to try to get to the bottom of the explosion that killed her and her stepbrother. She also wants to oust her stepfather from the estate and find the man that provided her comfort during the funeral six-months before. Rio Santana is the man she's looking for but she's unaware that he's an ICE undercover agent working for stepdaddy.
The suspense
There's quite a lot going on even though most roads lead back to Saul Flores, Cassie's stepfather. In addition to being a moocher, he lacks a conscience and she's in quite a bit of danger. Rio's trying to balance keeping her safe while maintaining his cover and Cassie creates many extreme complications. He's close to bringing this monster down but her investigation threatens not only her life but his sting and cover.
The romance
The chemistry between Rio and Cassie is pretty undeniable and Swan has written some of the most erotic passages I've read in awhile. She creates a vivid picture that leaves a steamy imprint. The foundation for their feelings for each other is just as strong as their passion. If there's any downside it's the romance that gets in the way as Cassie behaves so rashly, so often her intelligence is called into question. Rio's reactions make it difficult to believe he's been undercover for ten years.
The bottom line
The suspense and tension lurked behind every page and I was kept off balance throughout the story. I liked the relationship between Cassie and Rio and her conflicts about him were authentically presented, even when it got irritating at times...it was realistic. Where I struggled was with the many TSTL (Too Stupid to Live) moments Cassie presented. Her behavior was beyond naive and she just ended up being irritating. Alternatively, you could applaud her for being strong willed and independent, even if I perceived her differently. It was a good story despite my issues and kept me hooked. 3.5 stars

This is quite a surprise find because there seems to be very few reviews on this book. The first few chapters felt a bit off and I kept wondering whether did I miss a prequel novella or maybe this is not Book 1. We were thrown right into the heroine's dilemma and those background information was not presented to me upfront. But worry not, I did get the big picture later on and able to get into its flow.
Cassie, a doctor practicing in San Diego is still mourning for her mother and stepbrother after six months of their accidental passing. She decided to seek out the truth of their fatal incident back in Baja, Mexico and kick her mobster stepfather, Saul out from her mother's estate. While in Mexico, she found out that the kind man that she met during her mother's funeral was Saul's right hand man.
Rio Santana is deep undercover within Saul's human smuggling organization. However, Cassie's arrival at the estate threaten to crumble his plan and put both of them in harms way. I find Rio instantly likable after I get pass the awkward first meeting moment where I'm not sure what is their past history. Besides being totally professional and serious with Saul, he is down to earth and playful in front of Cassie. The way she tried to hit on him and Rio trying his damnest to ignore the temptation is pure hilarious. I love seeing him getting frustrated and crazy over her.
Well, Cassie is stubborn as hell, she is like a dog on a bone that just wouldn't let go. She is determine to avenge her mother's death and put Saul behind prison. But her sense of right and wrong was blurred when she got close of Rio. Is he a bad guy or a good guy? She isn't sure with all the conflicting action he'd done, but one thing she know is that she isn't willing to let him go. I just love Cassie for believing in Rio and loving him despite the circumstances.
I had read plenty of romantic suspense, especially those with undercover theme, but I find the plot in here quite refreshing. But for me to give any hint will be too spoilery. I will just say is quite different. This is a pretty solid writing for a romantic suspense with a evil villain, suspenseful plot that keeping me engage and some light humor thrown in, so I didn't feel the setting was too bleak and depressing. Considering this is a romance catering for the female reader, I don't expect the procedural detail to be realistic and detailed. Some of the things that Rio did make me roll my eyes wondering how come he was not dead yet. Anyway, putting that aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this romantic suspense and looking forward to read the next one in this series.

Edgy & Sexy!
So, while waiting for the release of Blaze, book #2 of Joan Swan's Phoenix Rising series, I started reading Swan's self-published book, Intimate Enemies. I've read and loved Fever, and I already knew she can write amazing romance-suspense, but...Holy guacamole! I love it when I'm surprised in a good way, and Intimate Enemies did just that...it was a surprise hit for me! I think I actually loved this slightly more than Fever. Sorry, Teague, Rio has secured a place in my heart as one of my favorite alpha heroes!
With an enthralling story line filled with danger, corruption, gang turf war, kidnapping threat, and a sleazy smuggler who wants to make a big name for himself, it all leads to the plot wrapping up with thrilling action!
“You know why. Because I don't have one hundred percent Rio here. Because I don't know who Rio really is. You have all of me, but...how much of you do I have?”
Cassie Christo is back at home in Baja, Mexico with the goal and determination to find out the truth behind the explosion that killed her mother and stepbrother. Little did she know that she would walk straight into the path of danger. Rio Santana works for Cassie's stepfather, Saul, and has been working undercover on a year-long sting operation to bring the guy down. Cassie's unexpected presence during this time could ruin all the plans. She's trying to figure out if Rio is good or bad, but her learning who he really is endangers both of them.

Cassie is one strong, independent woman! She's an ER doctor, a survivor, a woman who won't stop searching for answers. Deep down she wants to believe that Rio is good. Rio can't help but fall hard for the beautiful Cassie, and trying to keep her safe while keeping his boss happy is not easy. Hats off to the author for keeping the sexual tension between Rio and Cassie going and going until it leads to a must-have-tequila-shot-after-reading-that-wowza love scene! So hot and so worth it getting there!

About halfway through, I just wanted to take my time and not rush my reading, trying to draw out reaching the end. I enjoy this author's writing very much. The emotions between Rio & Cassie seem authentic for the situation they are in, and the writing is descriptive and intense without being too over the top. Listen up, Hollywood! While reading, I thought the story would make great movie material! I'd love to see this story play out on the big screen one day.
Intimate Enemies is an excellent choice if you're in a mood for steamy romance-suspense!

Rio fell in love with a girl through stories told to him, he held her once in his arms while she grieved and his fate was sealed. This girl worked her way under his skin. But he has a job to do. Working for Saul, gaining his trust, it was all for the greater good. He had his focus. That is until Cassie returns and her constant search for answers places her in the crosshairs.
I stumbled across this book as freebie. I had read Joan’s books under her pen name, Skye Jordan and loved them so I gave this a shot. As much as I love the romance genre and sub-cats that are more of the erotic and new adult variety, romantic suspense is a favorite of mine.
I was frustrated with both Rio and Cassie. I knew Rio couldn’t break his cover. He worked too hard, too much was at stake. But Cassie just pushed and pushed, oblivious to the threats. But all that frustration aided the story and the reading experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed the start to this series and will definitely be checking out the rest of this series.

I loved this!!!! I want more. Will there be more? Man I sure hope so.
Rio is working undercover and Cassie comes crashing into the mess. I have to say that I just fell in love with Rio. He was tough, loyal, possessive and so damn charming when he wanted to be. Rio played his part as the thug so damn well. But his inner turmoil over what he had to do and the way he had to act with Cassie was pulling at my heart. He hated what he had to do but he put on a good act and when he let his true self shine through it was sexy as hell. I just loved him!
Cassie was investigating the death of her mother and step brother. She suspects her step father, with good reason. He is so very bad. Drugs, guns and human trafficking are some of what he is doing. But Cassie was so damn tough and even when she was scared she wouldn't back down. I loved her sass. Cassie was perfect for Rio and when you got those two together it was so damn hot. The sexual tension was so darn thick. By the time they finally got together it was well worth the wait.
This book was fast paced and had so much going on. It pulled at my heart at times and gave me so many emotions. There were so many other people involved in this case that I didn't even realize until the very end.

Intimate Enemies is an impressive novel that got me hooked right from the first few pages. This action packed, heart-pounding suspense, love story played like a great movie in my head. The plot, characters and dialogues were portrayed realistically and definitely engaging.
Mafias in Mexico and various gangs rule the streets and most are involved in drugs, kidnapping, human trafficking, and murders. This book is full of corruptions but, truth be told, this story is of fiction but still holds a fraction of truth about this country, unfortunately.
Fortunately for us, Ms. Swan has given us a super sexy undercover cop to save the day and boy, did he ever. Rio Santana exudes confidence and reeks of alpha traits. It was so hard not fall in love with him. I found a picture of Ms. Swan’s Character Inspiration of Rio in one of the social medias and I just had to share. This man is hot and I had him in my head the whole time.
Of course, with a beautiful hero comes a beautiful heroine. Cassie Christo is not only beautiful she is also smart, independent, proud but hardheaded, jaded and the stepdaughter of the man Rio plans to put away. Yup, Ms. Swan doesn’t make it easy on Rio but they were great together!
Heavy on the romance element but the suspense is just as strong. Ms. Swan had me at the edge of my seat from the plot and had me holding my breath from the sexual tension and the steamy sex scenes. Overall, a highly recommended read and I cannot wait to see what she has next for this series.

Intimate Enemies is the first in the Covert Affairs series by up and coming author Joan Swan. When I read an excerpt of the book a few months back I immediately knew I wanted to read more so when the opportunity for Intimate Enemies came, I snatched that baby up. I love those sitting on the edge of your seat type of suspense novels and this one did not disappoint. This book reads like something from a seasoned author, and it totally exceeded my expectations.
Cassie Christo lives in California, works as a doctor but is unsettled in her life. She can’t stop thinking of a man who comforted her at the funeral of her mother and stepbrother. She doesn’t know who he is but she’s determined to find him and thank him for his kindness, something she isn’t used to. On this trip to her hometown, she’s also determined to confront her evil stepfather about the estate money he is throwing away on prostitutes in the wake of the deaths of her mother and stepbrother and plans to kick him out. After her arrival, she decides to start her own investigation of the tragedy involving the two people she loved and cared for the most in her life. However, before she even reaches her destination the adventure begins, and a dangerous one at that. Cassie is a complex character who is stubborn and determined beyond measure, and at times reckless. She never thinks twice about putting herself in danger in her quest to find out what really happened on the family yacht that day, even if it means going up against drug dealers, the Mexican mafia, Drug Lords, gang leaders, corrupt politicians, and human traffickers. She is tough as nails, fearless, and loyal to her core.
Since the funeral of his friends, Rio has been thinking of Cassie too, and dreaming of her is what gets him through most days. Thing is, he’s so close to the end of his yearlong undercover operation that finding Cassie is on the backburner and until he’s done with this job he sees no reason to even try. Fate steps in when she shows up at her mother’s house and he’s forced to face the feelings he’s been carrying around for months. It’s an inner battle because as much as his heart and other parts of his body want to be with her, he’s determined her safety is more important, which only causes more friction. It’s not like he can tell her what he’s doing, so in her eyes, he’s as bad as her stepfather, Saul. She’s smart and knows things aren’t adding up so she’s torn about her feelings forward him. It’s tearing him up and Ms. Swan does a great job showing the emotional turmoil.
Talk about sexual tension—WOW. Ms. Swan proved she can write it. Don’t you just love the sparks that fly when that tension is FINALLY broken? I loved Cassie and Rio as a couple because they complement each other. She’s a fly off the handle kind of person and he’s the level headed one who always swoops in and saves the day. Their romance is a rocky one. She’s really good at throwing up walls and is known for being a bit irrational, but once you learn what she has endured, her lack of trust makes sense. Rio has had his own share of misfortune and we see some of his vulnerabilities where his past comes into play. Rio has that irresistible, sexy, tough, mysterious bad-boy thing going on that will leave you drooling. At the end of the day though, he’s just an all-around good guy that any girl would love to have warming her bed every night.
This book has it all, suspense, mystery, twists and turns, sexual tension, action, emotion, griping story line, and multi-dimensional characters. If you like books that grab you from page one and don’t let go until the very end, this is the book for you. I found several of the supporting characters to be interesting so I’ll be watching and impatiently waiting for the next installment.

Their romance is a rocky one. She’s really good at throwing up walls and is known for being a bit irrational, but once you learn what she has endured, her lack of trust makes sense. Rio has had his own share of misfortune and we see some of his vulnerabilities where his past comes into play. Rio has that irresistible, sexy, tough, mysterious bad-boy thing going on that will leave you drooling. At the end of the day though, he’s just an all-around good guy that any girl would love to have warming her bed every night.
This book has it all, suspense, mystery, twists and turns, sexual tension, action, emotion, griping story line, and multi-dimensional characters. If you like books that grab you from page one and don’t let go until the very end, this is the book for you. I found several of the supporting characters to be interesting so I’ll be watching and impatiently waiting for the next installment.

First off, a big Thank you to Grace, for lending me the book! You rock, big time =)
As for the story, well, I enjoy a Romantic Suspense every once in a while and I'm glad I was able to read this. However, I must state this ahead of time: Gangs scare the shite out of me. I watch way too many documentaries on gang violence and mob movies. I know how they work. They take no mercy, especially if you're a snitch or if you're fishing for information that might jeopardize their operations. So with that said, I so wanted to slap some sense into the heroine of this story. I'm all for strong female leads, but some of the things Cassie pulled were borderline idiotic. Seriously. Why would you knowingly put yourself as a target for these gangs to dig up information? Honestly. I wanted to shoot her. Then to top it all off, she unknowingly puts Rio, our sexy undercover Hero, at risk with her reckless behavior. Gahh! Don't scare me like that woman! Grrr!

Ah, Rio. If it wasn't for Rio, I would've thrown the iPad out the window a long time ago. Cassie seriously grated on my nerves, but Rio was such a soothing balm; he kept me interested. He was all sorts of sexy and powerful, that you couldn't help but fall for the guy. I stood no chance until I knew he would be alright.
This story is, indeed, entertaining, but I had to put it down a lot to get my emotions in check. I cannot say this enough...the heroine got on my nerves. Hence the average rating. However, it did provide a lot of action and a good amount of steam to keep me interested. Recommended for those in the mood for a really good Romantic Suspense, but have the patience to deal a stubborn heroine :)

This was suppose to be an "in between" book (IBB). You know, those innocuous books that fill your time in between when your "highly anticipated" books are published. These books make you happy you read them, but you don't expect to be moved or surprised by them. So, what an unexpected pleasure when an IBB becomes a highly entertaining book.
Cassandra Christo is going home to Baja, California Mexico and she is on a mission. She is out to evict her stepfather, Saul, from her deceased mother's home. Her mother died six months ago along with her stepbrother in a boating accident. Now Saul is bringing prostitutes home and Cassie is going to find a way to get him out. Unfortunately, for Cassie, Saul is not merely a morally corrupt john, he also happens to be a white slave trader and now a terrorist smuggler.
When she arrives at her family estate, along with Saul, she meets Rio Santana, Chief of Security. This is not the first time they have met. At the her mother's funeral, Rio provided support, warmth and care to Cassie and although, she barely remembers his name, she does remember his compassion and touch. For Rio, helping Cassie is one of the first times in a long time he's made a human connection. As an I.C.E. agent working undercover for over a year, he has closed himself off to any ties choosing to keep himself totally focused on his assignment, until he met Cassie.
Things I liked about this book:
* Cassie - I like strong female characters in my romantic suspense books. Cassie is an emergency room doctor (smart) and is characterized as a bulldog for her tenacity in getting to the bottom of things. She is also smart in other ways. Without putting in a spoiler, let's just say she is astute and keenly observant and has the smarts to put the puzzle pieces together! I love it!
* Rio - smart, vulnerable, and oh, so alpha.
* Setting - Being in Baja, Mexico gets to take advantage of the fear and violence brought on by the gangs and drug cartels.
* Great action and suspenseful scenes. Had me on the edge of my seat.
Things that could've used some work:
* Both characters are wounded by their past. For Cassie, her situation could've been brought up earlier in the book. As a reader, it would help me add to the layers of her character earlier on. For Rio, there was not enough development to his past tragedy. It could've been more developed and also brought in earlier in the story.

What a great read! It had a bit of everything, delicious suspenseful romance! I loved the setting and the mixed narrative.
Cassie is head strong and a bit on the risky side. She has a few too stupid to live moments, but it comes from her rash choices. I did love her sassy attitude and strength as a survivor. It was easy to like her and want her to succeed.
Rio is all yummy bad boy, no girl can resist that! Throw in the hot Latin lover angle and panties will drop! He is a perfect match for impulsive Cassie, seriously the girl needs a keeper! I also loved seeing their dynamic and the hidden sweetness in him.
The book is a mixed narrative, mostly from Cassie and Rio, but we do have a little of the bad guy's POV as well. It gives a fuller and richer read knowing all the different angles. There are a couple spots where it gets jumpy and I wasn't exactly sure who was leading the narrative. It quickly sorts out, but it took me out of the moment.
What is a romantic suspense with out some steamy bedroom action! The bedroom door is wide open with plenty of spicy details. Not as much as a full blown erotic read, but more than enough to have a gal panting for a cold shower! The attraction is pretty quick, but they had a real chemistry which makes it believable.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Christa G. Lewis, who is always a delight. She has a great pace that adds to the action and drama of the story. I love the energy she puts into the smexy scenes and the movement in the rough & tumble moments. The only thing that bothered me was the distinct lack of accents, it was set in Mexico after all. But that is nitpicking on an otherwise terrific read.
Overall I enjoyed the book and can not wait to see what is next in the series and how the books will connect. I would love to see a HEA for Tomas or even her sweet cousin Nina. Definitely going to look for more of MS Swan's work. I really enjoyed her engaging writing and storytelling style!

I'm feeling quite spoiled because I've done nothing but read stories that have action, mystery and suspense mixed in with steamy romance. I've become even more picky about the romance novels I read so it's always a bit nerve racking to pick up a new book and read it.
That said, this is author Joan Swan's second book, and I hate to say this but... I liked it better than her debut Fever (don't tell Teague please)! If anything, Intimate Enemies was sexier than Fever and I didn't think that would be possible. The sexual tension between Cassie and Rio was so steamy I swear my glasses fogged up!
I've said it before, I prefer romance novels with bite. Meaning, I love action, suspense and/or mystery mixed in to make the story more interesting and realistic. Strong female and male protagonists are a must and Joan delivers on both fronts.
Intimate Enemies takes place in Mexico and Joan uses current events to weave a dangerous, action packed story that keeps you guessing until the very end. What I thought was very important is that while Joan did emphasize the drug problems in Mexico and the danger of the cartel, she did not lump all of the people of Mexico with them. She created sympathy for the Mexican people even as she used some of them as the villains of the story.
This Mexican thanks you Joan.
By the time I finished Intimate Enemies I felt like I had just run through the streets of Mexico while being tailed by the various villains from the book. It was exhilarating, exciting and of course incredibly romantic.
Let me just finish up by saying that Joan Swan sure can create "bad boy" heroes that aren't at all what they appear. If you like your characters angsty, sexy, and with a sense of duty and honor then you have to add Intimate Enemies to your "Must Have" list.

September 18, 2015I'm a huge Joan Swam fan and have enjoyed every book I've read for her including the two other books in the A Covert Affairs series. I've had this book on my TBR list forever and never got around to reading it until now. Unfortunately I've really struggled trying to get into this one. Book funk? At about 34% and have decided to put it to the side for now and not finish. I'll hold off rating for now. Luckily I borrowed the book through the Kindle Unlimited program so it was a free borrow.

This was a really good thriller, though some of the bad guys were flat. The plot was intriguing with lots of moving pieces, and I could see where this could have been a series with Tomas and Michael in future books. But it's not...
It didn't really work for me as a romance. Cassie is borderline TSTL - there's stubborn and then there's facing down bullets unarmed. Rio is fast on his feet, but has to keep adjusting his plans for this sexy hellion.
The final showdown was really well done, and the resolve was sweet, but still too angsty - how dumb can smart people be?

2.5. I wanted to like this book better than I did. The plot was somewhat interesting, but I thought the author could have done more explaining certain aspects, especially more detail about Rio's job. I really didn't like either of the main characters. I'm not really sure why, but I just didn't connect with either of them.

I found this on my Kindle and had no idea what it was or about the other day. Lots of suspense and action and secrets. Also a lot of adult content. What I really liked about this story was Rio and Cassie. The layers of problems they both had to deal with sucked me into the story. I'm a sucker for stories like that.

I won't go for a summary of the book before expressing my opinion, because there are many others and all reviews posted here have a summary of the plot... ok we all know what the book is about.. and to tell you the truth it is a formula I hunger for and crave for in such a desperate way. Aside from paranormal romance and urban fantasy books which are my favorite.. my next big fix, guilty pleasure or whatever you may want to call it are undercover enforcement agents, spies, covert ops, etc. You name it, wether it's a movie, a tv series or a book... I am always on the lookout for these kind of stories.. good, bad, I watch and read them all!!!
I stumbled upon this book becasue I saw a 5 star review from an author I was reading at the time, I read the books' profile here on GR and like a speeding bullet I went and bought it for my kindle app. (and believe me that is not something I do often). I got hooked on it at page 4. I loved the story overall, the romance was hot, the hero sooo sexy! and Latin !!! the heroine... strong and confident, a little too much of a type A personality, but i liked her, mainly because she never went for the oh- I-heard-something-horrible-and-now-I-hate-you-before-asking-the-truth-even-though-it-hurts-like-hell attitude formula I've seen in a lot of the books I read recently.. and the kiss and make up because everyting gets straighten out in the end... NOOOOOO, we have a believable story, with nice plot twists and supporting characters that you don't know what they will turn out to be in the end! or how will they act or react, etc. So overall I loved the story.
Reasons I did not give a 5 star rating:
1.- The book has several typos and grammatical errors, so I see an editing problem there.
2.- ENSENADA, Baja California..... NOOOO WAY IN HELL that what you read described in this book is nearly the reality of the State and the City.. why????? BECAUSE I GREW UP HERE AND I LIVE HERE. so it was very insulting the way the city and my State where depicted in this book. I would have tolerated Juarez or other really dangerous Mexican Cities but Ensenada? WTH Ensenada is a very safe city, it's a very important import-export spot, and it's beautiful! Yes, I won't argue that we have corruption in Mexico and that we have drug cartels, and currupt police offcers and politicians, etc, but not as strong as it was mentioned in the book and certainly not gang activity as portraid in the book. I felt lack of investigation about the place specially when mentioning street names, restaurants etc. I would have liked to hear real places, a real coffe shop, a real bakery... and believe me Ensenada is not that small that everyone knows each other.... it is not a tiny horrible town... there are Starbucks in Ensenada.... you feel me??
I understand we are reading fiction, but sometimes we need to cover it with fact.
Overall I LOVED THE BOOK aside from that fact....and looking forward the next!!
I would recommend this read if you are a sucker for steammy, sexy, law enforcement agents and like a good crime, love and suspense story!!!

Intimate Enemies is my first read from author Joan Swan, though I own her current Phoenix Rising books which are sitting on my TBR shelf right now. And I have to say, I was impressed.
Cassie Christo returns to her childhood home in Baja, Mexico in search of answers for her mother and step-brothers death as well as a way to get her corrupt step-father out. She has bitten off more than she can chew though when she finds a human smuggling ring, gang wars, a sexy and oh so tempting head of security and a web of lies. But she is not going to let all that stop her from finding out the truth, especially the sexy and tempting part...that she plans on taking a hands on approach to.
Rio is deep undercover for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and just weeks away from wrapping up his case when the beautiful and spirited Cassie returns home. Forbidden to get too close because of his job but unable to resist her presence, Rio is in a tug-of-war with his feelings for her. When his boss tells him to seduce Cassie to get her out of his hair, Rio is both terrified and aroused. He must find a way to complete his mission while keeping her safe and hope that he doesn't damage her trust so badly in the process that she wants nothing to do with him when this is all over with.
Intimate Enemies is a sexy, gritty, adrenaline rush. Packed full of action, angst and romance the story easily swept me away into the heat of Mexico, cringing at the dangers that surround these characters and smelling the scent of the sea in the air. The characters were enticing and the word building authentic. Rio is a hero to love. Sweet but full of secrets, protective yet dangerous, and deliciously naughty. He tried his hardest to resist Cassie but when he finally gave in, I was so glad, the wait was well worth it! It was heartbreaking, the turmoil Rio went through though, having to deceive Cassie or act differently in public with her because of his cover or when he couldn't tell her the truth even when she was begging. Cassie was a great heroine as well; strong, determined, caring and intelligent but she frustrated me a bit because she suspected Rio of being a cop and instead of understanding some of the undercover aspects and the very real danger he was in, which she should have since one of her best friends is a cop, she put him on a guilt trip over his dishonesty and almost blew his cover numerous times. I suppose I just expected more from her in this area. The plot moved at a consistent pace without a lull and I was surprised at the end by the number of side and secondary characters involved in this one operation. An exciting and enjoyable read, I would recommend Intimate Enemies to any romantic suspense fan.

I recently read Reckless by Skye Jordan and thoroughly enjoyed it. I discovered she also writes as Joan Swan and when I read the book description for Intimate Enemies, I was intrigued. Since it also had the audio version, I downloaded it. I am so glad I found this book!
The story pulled me in from the first scene and kept me glued to my seat until the end. The pacing is very fast with lots of action and highly emotion. This is an excellent romantic suspense novel. I liked Cassie’s character, even though at times, she didn’t make the best decisions, especially when it came to her safety. She is fearless to the point she puts her life in danger and the man who is supposed to be protecting her. I could feel her anguish over her mother and step-brothers’ deaths keenly. Her compassion for her cousin, her desire to help the poor, makes her a great heroine.
Now, Rio Santana is everything I love in a book boyfriend. He’s tall, dark and handsome as sin. He’s brave, loyal and determined to keep Cassie safe, even when she rushes in where angels fear to tread. I love a warrior character archetype and Rio fits it perfectly. And when you add in some bad boy, it’s enough to make a girl reach for her fan!
Intimate Enemies is an emotionally-charged love story. I could feel the sexual tension between Rio and Cassie in every scene. The love scenes are erotic, yet they are not all about the sex. The love growing between Cassie and Rio jumped off the page.
I listened to the audio version, and I really liked Christa G. Lewis. She reads with a great deal of emotion and tension radiated in her voice during the suspenseful scenes. I particularly enjoyed all the accents, and her voice tone for Rio is perfection. I will certainly look for other books narrated by her.
If you love erotic romances with lots of action and suspense, and a romantic love story, then you will love Intimate Enemies as much as I did. While this is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Swan, it will not be the last. Happy reading!
I recently read Reckless by Skye Jordan and thoroughly enjoyed it. I discovered she also writes as Joan Swan and when I read the book description for Intimate Enemies, I was intrigued. Since it also had the audio version, I downloaded it. I am so glad I found this book!
The story pulled me in from the first scene and kept me glued to my seat until the end. The pacing is very fast with lots of action and highly emotion. This is an excellent romantic suspense novel. This is my first Joan Swan book. I was kind of excited to read it as i heard so much about her first book Fever. Which was the first in another series called Phoenix Rising. Intimate enemies is also a first book in a new Covert Affairs series. This baby is a romantic suspense and action packed. Rio in under cover in Mexico when the step daughter of the man he's trying to take down shows up. Cassie is there to make sure her step father gets kicked out of her childhood home. Cassie doesn't realize she's met Rio before. He was at the funeral of her beloved mother and step brother. He held her at the graves while she cried her heart out. She felt something for the man at the time but was too distraught to really look at him and then he was gone. For Rio's part he loved holding her and hoped that when his mission was over there might be a chance to meet her again and maybe start a relationship. Then she shows up at the house in Mexico and from there it starts to all fall apart and quietly drive him mad. Honestly there is danger at every single turn. Packed to brim with action, suspense and romance tucked in here and there. Loved Rio and Cassie and i enjoyed the story. The only thing that bothered me a little was it seemed to at time to much danger. There was constant danger and then a small peak of romance and hot sex. Can't complain about that in the least though. Now and then it seemed to go on to long. Joan doesn't hold back on the gruesome parts of this either. It really brought it home that this story had a very serious side to go along with the romance. I look forward to book 2 in this series to see where it goes from here. 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars for Intimate Enemies by Joan Swan.

I read almost half this book before giving up out of pure boredom.
Plot, h and H were so absurd to be laughable. I found easier to believe in fantasy than in this false contemporary.
The heroine is a Mexican-American woman who grew (also) in Mexico. She behaves almost as a stupid tourist. She knows everyone in town, but is unable to spot dangerous situations. She has been almost raped, but has no problem in seducing/being seduced by her enemy's right hand. She recoils in fear at anybody's touch, but not his. Unfortunately they never met before, except at a funeral (where he has been kind...). She has no reason for trust, lust or anything else. She is the classical TSTL.
He is supposed to be an undercover agent. I really tremble at the idea that this might be the idea of professionalism of such people. As before he has no reason to lust/love/care for her. Even less to put a mission at risk. I could have understood a human being sense of pity, camaraderie. Humanity. This sense of "feeling" was absolutely a WTF moment. It's the contemporary version of the mated pair of so much PNR.
At 50% she was supposed to be dead at least 10 times (given her behaviour). But the sad thing? Nothing really had happened. Half a book for a couple of days of setting the danger.
Most of my fellow reviewer/reader have clearly a completely different opinion. I would suggest you read at least a couple of them to make mind your mind.

Well, this story didn't do too much for me. The heroine was supposed to be a young doctor, an American citizen who was origionally from Mexico.
She was supposed to be smart and pushy and knowlegeable. Really, she ended up coming across as Too Stupid to Live. She pushed into situations that were highly dangerous. Wandered around alone, as if there were no danger of being kidnapped or anything else and tried to force the hero to admit to her her was a good guy, despite the fact he was undercover and it would put his life in jeopardy.
All of that aside, she chose to get all romantically aggressive with the guy who she thought might be seeing prostitutes at her inherited home and

Romantic suspense with a truly irritating heroine. What part of "You're in danger" does she not understand? Apparently, every word because she selfishly pursues her own agenda without any thought to the consequences. There's a thin line between bravery and stupidity and she crossed it, IMO. Other than wishing the heroine, who somehow made it through medical school with her tiny, useless brain, was significantly less obtuse, this was very entertaining. You can tell the author pays attention to detail and has done her research, which makes the plot holes all the more prominent, but I'll chalk it up to artistic license.
There are apparently other books in the series, but they seem unrelated. I'd like to read about Raymie and Nina - she seemed like a character who had her head on straight.

Terrific Romantic Suspense...
I've had this book on my TBR list for a while, and it was an awesome read. Cassie returns to Mexico in an effort to find incriminating evidence against her stepfather, Saul, in order to get her family home back. While she is there, she fall for her stepfather's handsome, strong security advisor, Rio. She struggles with her attractions, knowing that Rio could be involved in Saul's criminal activities. But is Rio really who he says he is? And will Cassie make it out of Mexico alive? Many people want her dead...including her stepfather.
I love a smart, action packed romantic suspense and this certainly delivered. I'd highly recommend it and look forward to reading more from this author.

Skimmed a third of this book. I just wasn't into the heroine. She ruined the story for me. Too many TSTL moments for me.

I should have believed the many reviews here that mentioned that the heroine has a major case of TSTL. But I said to myself it could be that bad and jumped into the book.
The first half of the book wasn't that bad. She acted rather reckless sometimes but I could understand it most of the time as she was desperate for information about her family. But around the half of the book it was clear she really was just to stupid to live.
I mean the threat against her was so obvious and Rio obviously trying to keep her alive but she pushes him back again and again and runs right into the danger zone. It gotten to the point where it really bucked me and I wanted Rio to just leave her for it and get what was coming for her.
Also she occasionally gets angry at him for getting information about her behind her back when she done the exact same thing to him. Again and again she gets angry at him for this and for that when she was no better herself. She put him in a lot of dangerous situation and throw everything back in his face while he was trying to save her and took a lot of shit from her.
It got to the point for me that I wished he wouldn't bother with her and just move on.
That was the point I got so annoyed with her that I stopped reading the book (around 50%)

The first chapter was a little bit slow but then once Cassy got to Mexico it really took flight. Without giving too much away, the whole human trafficking plot was definitely different than anything else I read. I found it very creative and intriguing. I wanted to find out what happens to the bad guys just as much as I wanted to know how their love story unfolded.
Cassy is a super strong heroine who is so focused on her end goal that she doesn't see the signs of danger all around her. She is feisty, hot headed and intelligent, but sometimes her common sense took a backseat to her anger or frustration. Rio is you typical Alpha male, undercover agent, Latino lover. All sharp edges, smoking sexiness and sweet softness that only his gal gets to see.
I really cannot wait to read the next book, but I was hoping it would be Tomas's story.
