After WWI, strange and fantastic people began appearing in the world. Some you could say were heroes, some villains. This book details the years right before WWII, and how Europe is changed after the appearance of these "super humans".

This was a really interesting look at some of the European literary heroes and villains, viewed through the eyes of the real world. Serge Lehman builds a world stemming from the advent of these super people, and also ties it together with myths and stories during that time. The book definitely reminded me of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen... and I say that in the best possible way. The tone of the book is somber, but the pacing is still somehow lively and entertaining. I think Lehman's style did well to cultivate some mystery and political intrigue woven within the more typical "superhero battles".

The art was also really well done by Fabrice Colin and Fabrice Gess. The tone of their work matched well with the story and really gave it a nefarious look to the book - keeping in line with the backstabbing and betrayal that occurs. Also their storytelling pacing is really well done, with moments of silent panels giving us a rhythmic reality to the characters and the spoken dialogue.

I read the translated version, which sometimes takes away from the story. But to me, not having really heard of this series before, I found it enjoyable and interesting. REcommended for fans of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen or general "superpowers set in the real world" type stories.
