Braxton U #2

The Hurt of Letting Go

Are we, or aren’t we? Conrad has been toying with me for too long, and enough is enough. He needs to decide if he wants to keep me or finally let me go.

Conrad Dugray
Falling in love was never part of my plan. I was supposed to graduate college and prepare to join the family business. My family’s expectations of me as the oldest son were far too high, and they were becoming harder to reach.
Emree was never supposed to be the girl I fell for. My family already had a future wife in mind for me and they would never accept someone with Emree’s background. I tried to push her away on multiple occasions, but it was becoming more difficult each time. Once my family found out about her, they would destroy anything we had.

Emree Anders
Being in love with a man who didn’t seem to want to be with you was a special kind of torture. Conrad constantly pushed me away and just when I thought I was over him, he was back again, claiming he couldn’t go another day without me.
My heart couldn’t take the tug-of-war game he continued to play with it, and I feared it might shatter the next time he pushed me away. I needed to stand my ground and make him decide if he wanted me or he would have to let me go.

Conrad and Emree have been dating for six months. They had a bit of a rocky start with him being afraid to commit but he straightened himself out and they have been enjoying each other as much as they can. Especially Conrad. He is soaking up as much time as he can with Emree since he is keeping a secret from everyone he knows. One that will devastate Emree. His family if forcing him into an arranged marriage once he graduates from college and he is forced to start "dating" her asap. So he does the hardest thing he has ever had to do, break both his and Emree's heart and let her go.

I really enjoyed that this one wasn't the normal formula for a second chance romance. We saw them together, go through their break up and then work their way back to each other. It was a very nice change of pace. Did they break me and have me a hot mess with all the tears I shed? Absolutely. Did I love them immensely and immediately wanted to re-read this one? Most definitely. Does his parents suck hairy donkey balls? A trillion percent yes. I really felt both their anguish in this one. My heart hurt for them. Conrad made some bad choices and should have stood up to his parents sooner but I feel like he truly redeemed himself. I am obsessed with this world and cannot wait for Maddox's story.

This is a second chance romance full of angst.
Conrad is stuck between a rock and a hard a place. Having to choose between family obligation and a girl he unintentionally fell hard for. Emree is blissfully unaware of Conrad’s struggle and knows she wants to be with him. When he loses her and she finally thinks she can move on, he comes back again. Will she or won’t she let him back in?

I felt an array of emotions for these two including anger, sadness, joy and love. There were a lot of bumps in the road but these two were made for each other.

My thoughts:
•After the prologue, I wasn’t sure how I felt about Conrad but he quickly won me over.
•Emree is a strong female lead and is unapologetically herself which I absolutely adored.

This book was very different from the first one. The first 30% of the book was honestly kind of boring and it felt like fluff but then I realized why because the rest of the book is ANGST CITY!! Holy moly was this book angsty as hell. I honestly wasn’t expecting the story line, it usually isn’t my fav. I feel like the main reason I didn’t like this as much as the first book was because it was way too wordy. Like everything was being described with so many words. Everyone’s outfits were described, every room they entered was described. I feel like it took up a lot of the story. Not gonna lie I skimmed a lot because it was just descriptions and honestly shit I didn’t care about. I did like the characters (not as much as Camden and Blaire) but Conrad grew on me once he found his spine and Emree stood her ground, maybe not as much as I wanted her to but she wasn’t as much as a pushover as I thought she was going to be.

I can’t wait for Maddox and Traz’s book though!

(I received an ARC for this book)

Trigger Warnings include:
verbally and emotionally abusive parent, discussions of cheating

This is one of those roller coasters you have to climb on, hold on for dear life, and experience yourself! Conrad got busy breaking my heart from chapter one! But he had no issue putting it back together! This was a battle of social class standings. The confusion and misunderstandings it brings. It hurt seeing Conrad hurt, struggling to keep Emree at a distance to protect her. And failing miserably. No matter how much time passed. No matter how much happened. No matter the amount of pain. It was still impossible for Conrad and Emree to let go of their love. Everyone around them saw it, and hurt right along with them. Everything had the ability to not just hurt them, but implode their friend group. But it did something so much more beautiful: it proved that this found family was in for the long haul. Every time Emree stood up for herself and her own feelings with all her strength, I wanted to take her out for drinks (we definitely both deserved a couple!) Conrad was the definition of “a man who chooses you”. And there was plenty of time to enjoy Grovel City! Gotta give credit where credit is due, Conrad is GOOD at it!

My Favorite Quotes:
• “The thought of leaving you made it hard for me to breathe.”
• “You consume my world.”
• “You’re meant to be in my life.”
• “Let me give my girl what she wants then.”
• “There is no one besides you.”
• “You’re it for me, baby.”

I read the first in this series in January with The Act of Trusting, and feel so lucky to have been given an ARC for book 2!

Conrad and Emree's story is just so good! There was romance, drama, heartbreak, confusion, jealousy, friendship and more!

We got to meet Conrad and Emree in the first book, and see them get together in a friends with benefits type relationship. But the reason behind that was kept fairly secret, so it was hard to tell if Conrad was just a player or if there was more to it. Well, there was a whole lot more to it!

You come to find out that Conrad comes from an incredibly wealthy and powerful family, but while he's at school at Braxton, he's able to keep his family life secret and just live like a normal person. Because of family obligations, he doesn’t want to get involved in relationships which is why he sticks with friends with benefits only. But when Emree absolutely captures his heart, Conrad can't help but fall for her.

And then comes the big twist. We find out that Conrad's father expects him to not only take over the family business, but he's also forced into an arranged marriage, thus he has to break Emree's heart.

I have mixed feelings on this plotline. In 2023 it feels a bit far-fetched for arranged marriage to be this big of a deal. But I also love it because with the MAN being forced into an arranged marriage, when typically you read about a woman being in this situation, was a great twist on this storyline.

I thought the internal struggle that Conrad goes through was well written. His feelings are very complex, and you really understand why he's so torn. He has lived his whole life under these expectations, with no other life plan even considered. It's just been the expectation from the start. He wants to please his family and just wants his father to be proud. And yet, he has never felt actual love more than what he has experienced with Emree. She's shown him true love, comfort and a sense of home, which he's never had.

I feel like Emree handles the situation beautifully. She allows herself time to wallow and be heartbroken, but she also is strong in picking herself up to move on. She's clear to Conrad what she needs to be able to move on, and sticks with it. I would have liked for a little more time to pass between their break up and getting back together, just to draw out the drama a little more.

I also adore the found family aspect of this book. Conrad has it with his teammates. Emree has it with Blair. Together they all form this little family that means so much to one another.

One of my favorite quotes from the book is "This is what family is. Not people who are tied to you by the blood that runs through your veins, but the people who are there for you no matter what. The ones who love and truly care for you, no matter what."

If you're looking for a sports romance that will tug at your heartstrings, definitely pick this book up!

Def another must read!! Lexi has me in a chokehold! Absolutely loving the Braxton U books! ❤️

The Hurt of Letting Go by Lexi Bissen

After completely book 1 I was immediately grabbing book 2! Devoured! While my heart broke for both Conrad & Emree (love her name btw) I also wanted to throw my phone! While you think Conrad is just this really big jerk when you find out his reasoning for all the Hurt, you still think he's a jerk, but your heart breaks for him. And you understand him a little more. The cards he's dealt are less than desirable, and it's hard to know what you do if faced with that situation.

But God was I so proud when he finally figured out that love was worth it! I absolutely loved once he started taking control of his life! I was cheering and rooting for them! And his character growth was amazing! I loved Emree from the beginning, such a spitfire! And the strength in both characters for being college aged and being thrown twists and turns! Although not my favorites, Camden currently still has me in a chokehold! I absolutely loved this book too!

Now that I devoured books 1 & 2, I'll just be here anxiously awaiting book 3! I absolutely can not wait for Maddox & Trazia!!! So glad I picked up Lexi's books!

📖: The Hurt of Letting Go
During The Act of Trusting (book 1) Emree was one of my favorite characters. She was so fun, beautiful, and loyal! I couldn’t wait to read her story! She falls for the one person who is trying his best to keep his distance and remain “friends with benefits” Conrad has never been the committing type. He is battling his own demons. Trying to juggle the girl he is falling for & his family’s expectations. It was so heartbreaking to see Conrad struggle and I’m glad we got to see behind all that mystery. Be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions and to witness a group of friends who love each other like family! It’s refreshing to read no matter what mental struggles you might be going through, you have your people there to accept & support you. This series is a totally feel good read. Maddox is the one character I can’t wait to get my hands on and read his story!! I just know Trazia & Maddox are going to be unforgettable! 🤍🤍

I felt the first 30-40% really dragged on. I wanted more angst and less fluff. More talking and less describing of their friends and where they were at. I still want contractions to be used. The use of 2 words instead of 1 disrupted the flow of the mountain of internal dialogue

While Conrad and Emree were enjoyable, they felt more like puppy love. I wanted a much deeper connection from them. Emree set her sights on him prior to book 1 and wanted him. I never really found Conrad’s love for Emree to be as strong as hers. There was a ton of back and forth that gave me reader whiplash

Rating 3.5

I’m genuinely curious for the pairings of the next 3 couples

𝕄𝕪 𝕋𝕙𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤:
Conrad and Emree’s love story kind of starts in The Act of Trusting. You see the beginning of their relationship, and it slowly but surely brings you into this book! I definitely recommend reading book 1 before starting this one due to their background.😏

After seeing the glimpses of this couple, I knew I needed their story told. Conrad appeared to be a complex character until we saw who he really was. Emree was everything bubbly and happy until she wasn't. I loved watching both Conrad and Emree grow a backbone. Although it was used differently, I applauded the strength it took to do it.🎉

Thank you, Lexi, for an opportunity of an ARC! I so look forward to Trazia and Maddox's book! Just based on the glimpses we get from them in this book, and in the author's Facebook group, I know they are going to make some fireworks!😏👀

The Hurt of Letting Go by Lexi Bissen is book two in the Braxton U series of new adult novels.

This book started out a bit slow for me, but the second half picked up. There’s a lot of telling in the first half and more showing in the second part.

Conrad Dugray and Emree Anders have been together for six months and know they love one another when Conrad’s father gives him an ultimatum. He is to start dating the young woman of his father’s choosing, get engaged, and marry her after graduation. Conrad had known this was coming as his billionaire father had prepared him, but having to break up with Emree would be the hardest thing he ever had to do.

Connor was problematic for me toward the beginning of the book because I thought he was immature, but he really grew over the course of the book. I loved that Emree was good at standing up for herself and didn’t let Conrad of his father walk all over her. I really loved the characters in this book - they are strongly written and funny. The world building is good as well.

The Hurt of Letting Go is a standalone book in an interconnected series. Read and let me know what you think - I’d love to discuss!

It's just not as good as the first book. The Male MC needed to grow a backbone, and I didn't like how it took so long for him to understand what life really is. That said, it was fun to see the soccer team again, and move forward in the storylines of everyone. I will be continuing on to see how they all progress!

Conrad is conflicted between the life that has been planned for him and the life he has found while attending college. He is surrounded by a loyal group of friends however the most difficult choice is when it comes to Emree. He has tried to distance himself as he knows they can’t have a future together however she claimed his heart before he knew what happened.

Emree loves Conrad but she is torn between the happiness when things are good between them and the pain when he pushes her away. She knows that things can’t continue as they are even if it means breaking both their hearts by walking away.

So much emotion, angst and turmoil as Conrad must decide what will truly make him happy and what he is willing to risk to get it.

“Why, Conrad? Why did you date me and let me fall for you these last six months? You knew nothing could ever come of this, yet you strung me along for half a year, all while lying to me.”
“Because I was falling in love with you, and the thought of leaving you made it hard for me to breathe.”

This book broke my heart! I hurt for both Emree and Conrad. He believed he had to do what his family expected of him, even though it hurt both of them in the process. They tried to move on from the other, thinking it was the only option. But their love was one that was inevitable, and the time they spent apart only reinforced what they felt and what they were willing to do for each other. I loved how strong Emree was through this all. She had her moments, but she also stood her ground, knowing she needed Conrad to be the one to stand up for their relationship. Watching Conrad battle his feelings vs his obligations was heart wrenching. He truly thought he had no choice, but the pull between him and Emree was not lessened over time. He needed to fight for their love, and the time apart made him realize she was what he needed. Seeing them both in pain truly hurt my heart while reading, and had me craving that something would change, hoping Conrad would finally stand up to his family. I loved this book set in the Braxton U universe, and can’t wait for the next book in the series!

“Baby, call me a thief because I’m coming after everything that involves you, including that heart,”

This is the second book in the Braxton university series and I couldn’t put this book down.

Emree and Conrad are both junior at Braxton U but that were the similarities between them end, while she was raised by a single mother, he was raised as a heir with his whole life already planned out. Even though he knows he shouldn’t get close to Emree because there can be no future for them, he does anyway because he can’t stay away. They started out as friends with benefits but in quickly turned into something more but Conrad has been hiding a secret that will break both their hearts. He was never supposed to fall for her which made breaking her heart so much more difficult because he didn’t share why. And just when Emree is trying to move on, the truth comes out and he back again, not wanting to let her go. But can she let go of the hurt he caused and give them another chance or will his family get in the way?
These two had undeniable connection from beginning to end even when she hated him, all their feeling were still there between them. They had many obstacles in way and the both go through so much hurt being apart. But Emree standing her ground and making him work for her was Conrad wake up call, it made him reevaluate his life and how he wants to live it. I really enjoyed these two getting their second chance, once they both let go of the hurt they had, they were better together than apart. Overall, this book was great, I really enjoyed the characters and the ending. I can’t wait for the next book!

I would recommend if you like:

After having read The Act of Trusting I couldn't wait to read more from this author! From the moment I found out about this book I knew I had to pick it up! I dived right back into the Braxton U world! I enjoyed this story so much!

Emree and Conrad's journey pulled me in so quickly! Emree and Conrad have fallen hard for one another. Were these two doomed from the beginning? Or is what they share worth it all?

My heart and I got right into Emree and Conrad's story! I really related to Emree. The chemistry and connection that Conrad and Emree shared was undeniable. It isn't easy for these two and I didn't know how they'd tackle how they felt as well as other things in their lives. These two had me feeling it all with them for sure!

I was happy to be back with the Braxton U crew!

With The Hurt of Letting Go, Ms.Bissen has created such a good read that had my heart and I feeling so much! This author continues to pull so many emotions from me with her books and I love that. I can't wait for more! 💗

Finally we get Conrad and Emree’s book! One filled with so much drama and angst but so worth all the struggle. Plus we still get to see all of the incredible friends group that they surround themselves with that their lives would not be the same without. Truely live without the antics from the guys from the Soccer team and her best friend their lives would be dull. The will they or won’t they tug of war between Conrad and Emree is so heart wrenching to witness. Once she finally stands her ground I’m so proud of her. She has got so much sass and gumption. She makes him work for it. They go through so much together. Conrad had so many demons that he is trying to work through but try’s to fight them on his own. Which fails miserably. Watching them fall apart is painful. But what is so beautiful is watching them fall in love all over again. They have so many obstacles in their way but they figure it out. They make such a great team. I’m so glad that they got their happily ever after. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

I was so ready for Conrad and Emree story! Holy emotional roller coaster ride. I felt like my heart was in my throat for half of this book, but I couldn’t put it down. It was emotional in all the best ways. Conrad has some pretty big family obligations to fulfill and doesn’t know how to tell Emree, or really anyone. He figures the best way to handle things is to break things off. That part hurt, I felt for Emree. I did love how she tried to pick herself up and move on, even if it was hard. The connection they had could not be broken though and so much more happened between them. Conrad has a lot to prove and Emree has to decide if it was all worth the risk. It was just too good. I was so excited to get more from the friend group too, I can hardly wait for the others to get their own stories.

I really enjoyed Lexi Bissens debut novel in this series so I’ve been looking forward to this next installment. We just need more college, soccer romance in this world. This book is a little different romance formula in that the boy (Conrad) already has the girl (Emree) from the jump. However, Conrad’s super wealthy family has other ideas about who he should date to fulfill his family obligations. Unfortunately Emree does not fit the bill. So what is Conrad to do…stay loyal to his family or his love? This book is interesting that it’s a different kind of romance. I think I would have preferred a more traditional story..I like when the guy gets the girl. I felt bad for the main characters because they were so conflicted. I love the side characters and do enjoy this series quite a bit.

“The Hurt of Letting Go” is the second book in Lexi Bissen’s Braxton University series, but it can be read as a standalone. The book is about Conrad and Emree, two people who love each other but have a lot of obstacles standing in their way. Conrad must choose between his family obligations and his relationship with Emree, which causes a lot of angst and pain for them both. I thought Conrad was an interesting character; yes, he made mistakes, but he always tried to do what was right in an impossible situation. And Emree! She was so sweet and sassy, and I loved that she wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself. All in all, I enjoyed this read!!!

Lexi Bissen really knows how to write emotional romance stories with some steamy scenes!

The Hurt of Letting Go was so amazing! I loved getting to see more of Conrad and Emree’s relationship and how it played out. This was definitely a rollercoaster ride full of emotion. I love this group of friends, they truly are like a family and every time they are together my heart just feels full. Conrad has such a great character development. I love Emree immediately. She is so caring and down to earth. These two really balance each other out. I definitely enjoyed this read!

This book was so good, I would recommend it to everyone! I can’t wait for more of these characters! There is definitely some things brewing for the other characters I can’t wait to see play out!

Conrad and Emree can they have it all? It all starts off simple enough friends with "extra benefits" isn't that every college kid's dream?

Conrad especially is under a lot of pressure. His family, mostly his father, is expecting him to head his family into the future.
With his struggle to do what he feels is his obligation to his family and this sudden new life that has crept into his soul and is calling him to follow his own path what will he choose.
Emree on the other hand who comes from some place far removed from Conrad would give up so many things to have his opportunities but would she give up on love?
Emotional story about growing, dreaming, finding your support system, what family truly is.

This college romance has an emotional twist that definitely makes this couple stand out. Conrad and Emree start off as being friends with "extra" benefits but turns into something more for the both of them. As these two are growing intense feelings for each other, Conrad is hiding something that will break not only his heart but Emree's as well. It was great to see Conrad stand up to his father and fight for the life he wanted. Also amazing seeing how these two were able to get their second chance and be there for each other during their long road ahead. Loved how this couple got their HEA.
