CaveTime: God's Plan for Man's Escape from Life's Assaults

Rate this book
Overcome by the cares of life, David escaped to the cave…a place of REFUGE.

Are you under assault? Do you need an escape – a place where everything you are, and everything you are not, is acceptable? CaveTime is God's Plan for Man's Escape from Life's Assaults. When David was under assault and mere steps ahead of death, he escaped to a place that was familiar to him – the cave, a place of refuge. As a shepherd boy, the cave was where he heard the voice of the Lord, wrote songs and poems, and received his courage, strength, and boldness to kill the lion, the bear, and Goliath. Overcome by the assaults of debt, distress, and discontentment, the greatest warriors of the day were also searching for a refuge – a place where they could find their strength, honor, and bare their souls without judgment. They found refuge and safety in the cave. Something happened in the cave, because later they were referred to as Mighty Men.

Today men are under assault. Blitzed by cultural and spiritual expectations to succeed, most men feel they must present themselves as the perfect man with everything under control. They are defined by jobs, titles, bank accounts, houses, and cars. As husbands, fathers, and spiritual leaders, men are expected to instantly have all the answers. Believing the lie of the enemy of their soul, they become isolated, fearing they won't measure up. Men need a refuge, a place of safety, a place of escape. Come to the cave…God is waiting for you there.

This book is based on Voth's study of David's life, and in particular, the amount of time he spent in caves. Caves were a refuge for him. A way to escape Saul's madness-inspired attempts to kill him and find solace with God in the peace and quiet of the cave. David was often joined in the cave by upto 400 men at any time, a group of which became David's mighty men that he describes in the Bible.

Voth encourages men to follow a similar path and adopt a practice of "CaveTime", where we set ourselves apart from the daily pressures of life and, whether alone or with other men, commune with God. Voth suggests men have three key roles:

1. Pursue an individual relationship with God first,
2. Understand that man was created ti be a masculine presence on behalf of his God for the people in his world, and
3. Pursue relationships that help you too live well.

All of which I fundamentally agree with. In order to fulfil these roles, men need to adopt 5 practices or "stones" as Voth calls them (to keep the David analogy going) some of which will be fulfilled in the cave and some outside. The 5 stones are:

1. Show up.
2. Worship
3. Prayer
4. Word
5. Community

Nothing too groundbreaking there. However, I did appreciate Voth's perspective on each and the importance of regularity. Too many men hope to have a thriving relationship with God by shooting off the occasional prayer request. In particular, Stone 1 is pivotal, Showing Up. We're great at showing up to work everyday but are we prepared to show up to meet with our Lord everyday? Further, I appreciated Voth's commitment to worship. Once again this is an area that many men shy around from and specifically arrive at church after the opening worship has concluded. David is a great example of a man who from a very young age was passionate about praise and worship. Yes, he was musical which gave him an advantage but I know I find something special happens when I lift my hands in worship. It's an act of surrender.

Voth is very practical and provides plenty of ideas on how to make one's CaveTime experience a good one. Another fact that I appreciated about this book is that it doesn't have that "macho" feel that so many 'manhood' books have. Voth recognises that God has made us all very different, some of us are jocks, some are artists, some extrovert, some introvert, etc and we've all got to find our own style of connecting with God. As Voth encourages, simply ask God, He'll tell each of us what is the 'right' way for each of us because He so wants to commune with each of us.

This is an excellent practical book that helps men to draw closer to God. I've already started using many of his suggestions to reinvigorate my "Cavetime."

Jeff Voth's CaveTime book is really great. All of his suggestions are spot on and the detail of the five stones is also really good. I plan to reread this book a few times to really help the information sink in and my hope is to apply all of the teachings to the best of my ability. If you are a man and trying to build a relationship with God you can't go wrong starting or picking up here. As for the women in your life, she could learn so much about how men approach relationships and build their faith by also reading this title as well. Although the book is more masculine focused a lot could be learned by both sides as the stones and his stories could and can relate to anyone. I encourage you to give this a read or listen as the audiobook is great to, and experience Jeff's passion as he tells you about CaveTime and building a solid foundation for your relationship with our Heavenly Father.

I always knew, as a Christian, that my identity was now securely hidden in God with Christ. However, my identity as a man (with the X and Y chromosomes) hasn't always been that clear to me. Thus it has been a monumental blessing in my life in how Jeff Voth has powerfully opened up my own eyes as a fellow possessor of the X and Y chromosomes, himself!!! . . . I am also currently reading his latest book, 'Defending the Feminine Heart' of which both his books have simply (again) been a total and unexpected godsend in my life!!!

This is a fantastic book by Jeff Voth. He gets to the core of how a man's faith in Jesus Christ is lived out! Through 1) showing up in your time with God. 2) Worshiping our God and King. 3) Engaging in prayer 4) Engaging in the Word and 5) Doing life in community - not alone.

I liked his real life examples and also how he weaved in King David's story and the mighty men.

I am wrapping up a study of this book with a group of men in our "cave" - using the Foundations study on cavetime.org! We as men have grown in this 8 weeks!

Love the idea behind this book that men need time away from the elements of life to be alone with God. Author Jeff Voth compares our need for retreat to that of king David and leaves readers desiring alone time with God.

Great book! Did a mens bible study with this book and the companion book, The Sling. This tells the story of David and his mighty men that were transformed by God. Told very well by Jeff Voth, founder of Cavetime Ministries.

I would highly recommend this book not only for men, but for women also. We need our cavetime too, although we might prefer to call it something else.

The author draws on the life of David and his 400 men, as well as his own life to teach the importance of withdrawing to the "cave" and learning to use 5 "stones" to defend ourselves and others against life's assaults.

It's a great book for men's groups to study together. Wive's, get your husband a copy. This book can help him become the man God created him to be. Don't forget to read it yourself, because the tools it gives are necessary for living victoriously.

This review is based on a free ebook given me by the publisher.
