For Fisher Haskins, school is a torturous waste of time, and not just because he can't shake his reputation as the nice-but-dumb kid. After his evening job washing boats on The Row, he barely has time to scarf down leftovers, get through his mind-numbing homework, and catch a few ZZZs.
Until recently, staying busy had worked just fine to distract Little Fish from facing life's big quandaries, like, are some people destined to be eternal losers? Who decides what "winning" even means? And why does he feel like a walking magnet for every asshole on the island? If his dad were around, maybe he'd have some answers. Or would he be too wasted to care?

I am so glad that I read this fantastic treasure. A feel-good book that you can't put down but with a message that reminds one that life isn't always fair and some people just suck.

But what really matters is staying true to yourself.

Happy reading!

My husband and I both read this - and we both loved it! It is a quick read. I appreciate the authenticity of the characters and and the location. I could picture the actual locations in my mind while I was reading.

The main character is in middle school - but don’t let that dissuade you from choosing it because the experiences and lesson are universal to the human experience (particularly in small towns).

If you are 13, about to be 13, or ever were 13 I would recommend it! If you have a ~13 y/o in your home - read it twice and have them read it too!

Great read!!!

The Key West local experience with school and work is probably very different from many vacationers expectations and experience on Duval Street. Hazel Smack weaves an authentic story about a young man who is trying to do what he loves, while dealing with adults in his life who don't grasp what he is going thru every day.
It's a quick read with plenty of feels for all readers, not just limited to YA.
Highly recommend!!!!

Incredible story for young adult readers or adult readers! As someone born and raised in Key West, people often ask me, ‘What was it like growing up in Key West?’ Going forward, I will answer this question by encouraging people to read this book. The story is sweet, touching, and authentic to the Key West local experience. Definitely worth a read (or two). 10/10!

Quick read. Depicts young people as flawed but capable, like people of any age. Read it for the heart-tugging human story behind the fishing story! MC is 13, so it's a great upper MG read.
