Shannon Sue Dunlap writes books with a dose of laughter and a spoonful of Love. One of the greatest compliments you can give her is saying her stories made you laugh-out-loud. She favors traveling around the world, singing tunes from classic musicals, and drinking Dr. Pepper. Shannon is a die-hard fan of happy endings and believes the Heavenly Father has designed one for each of us.
There's nothing better than reading an opening line and realizing that you've found a new favorite author. Well, except maybe finishing the book and loving it even more than that line.
Full of hilarious one-liners, awkward moments, and the sort of romance I can get behind, Lone Star Sweetheart doesn't stop at a sweet, funny story. Will I get pelted with rotten eggs if I mention the HEART in it? Seriously!
Look, the faith arc is a familiar one. Sometimes when you read "blame God" stories, you get just a bit sick of that trope. But here's the deal. First... it's a big issue. People struggle with it every day. So for me, what I need to see is something fresh in it.
Nothing gets fresher than the faith-filled, no-holds-barred Christian telling someone who should know better that his lack of faith in God means he's a fool. WOOT! You go, KATHERINE! No really. That's what is so brilliant about this book. Most of the time, that kind of forthright, in-your-face, 2x4 wielding is offensive, but from the right character, at the right time, with a thick-skulled guy standing there, it's perfect. And how Shannon Sue Dunlap did it was also perfect.
She's an insta-read for me. I just loved everything from the writing, the personalities, the story line, and the unconventional way she prodded her characters to be themselves AND do the right thing.
Sweetheart, Texas is the place to be if you want to compete. The mayor has hired a big-shot political consultant, Ryan, to help him go head-to-head against his wife. Local resident, Katherine, is recruited to help her in the campaign.
Katherine is pricklier than a porcupine, especially in her interactions with Ryan. She's high-strung, opinionated, loud, passionate, must be handled gently, and ready to battle, which made me doubt her sincerity when she realized her true feelings. Both Ryan and I were just sure she was out to sabotage the mayor and undermine Ryan's efforts. Ryan, on the other hand, made me laugh. His big city ideas and the way he would write his name on post-its all over the shared office spacing, staking his claim, was hilarious.
-While there were light smatterings of Christian elements throughout the book, the religion didn't make a strong appearance until the last 1/3 of the book, and kind of caught me by surprise at the sudden intensity. -I was hoping for a tad more romance to combat the prickles for the first 1/2 of the story, but I'll take what I can get, as it really was sweet. -There was a mystery element threaded within that added a subtle hint of danger. The subterfuge came as a surprise as well--but that's what makes a good mystery.
By the end, the characters were likable and the town livable. All in all, a fun and clever story that looks to be the first in a series. If you enjoy enemies-to-more with a dab of romance and a dollop of mystery, you're sure to be entertained by this one.
Content: very mild romance; very mild moments of danger/peril; mild+ religion
*I received a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.*
I really enjoyed this book from debut author Shannon Sue Dunlap. It was a fun enemies to lovers, small town, battle of the sexes read. I thought the premise of the main characters being political consultants for a husband and wife running against each other was very unique and fun!
I enjoyed Ryan’s character right from the start. He was flirty and kind. Katherine took me a bit to warm up to but after we get under some of her layers she softens. I love that she falls first for Ryan and initiates the first kiss. The kiss was done in such an original way. I also love her growth as she is someone who has held many jobs and hasn’t found what she loves yet. She falls into being a political campaign manager by accident to help save the town she loves and eventually finds her place. It was realistic in that sometimes it’s a journey to find what you are meant for and I loved that about it.
This book had some Christian themes and elements. I enjoy Christian fiction books but felt that this book was a little inconsistent in that the faith element wasn’t talked about until quite a ways through the book. But Ryan’s struggle with his faith because of some things that have happened in his past were very realistic and were done well.
I had hoped for a little more romance as this book was a little light on it for me. The epilogue however was super cute and satisfying.
Overall, this was a great book! I enjoyed the mystery woven in as someone tries to sabotage the election. I also really liked that despite the husband and wife running against each other during the election and their differences of opinions they loved each other deeply.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This story put a smile on my face! Lone Star Sweetheart is charming and hilarious. Katherine is fantastic and Ryan turns out to be just perfect(even though I wanted to shake him a time or two early on!). I also liked the mystery element to the story-that added a great layer to the story. The ending was great with a couple of surprise twists that were awesome. A great read all around for me!
I received an ARC of this story from the author and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
I've read books that I've immediately wanted to see made into a movie--and this is one of them! Romantic comedy with a faith element that just makes sense. When you pit a firebrand against a professional in a political situation, you're going to get sparks. Can't wait to read more books in this series!
Are you looking for a new lighter read? Lone Star Sweetheart by Shannon Sue Dunlop is one you should consider. This is my first read by this author and I am looking forward to more books since it is the first one in a the new Sweetheart series.
Katherine Bruno is a small town gal in Sweetheart, Texas. As a Christian, she often tries to bite her tongue, but many times she ends up telling things like she sees them. While known to be blunt, she loves her small town and the townspeople. When Ryan Park comes to Sweetheart to help the mayor seek re-election as his political consultant/campaign manager in the race against the mayor's wife, Katherine is intrigued by the handsome new man in town. The mayor's wife then hires Katherine as her campaign manager. Does that then make Ryan and Katherine enemies?
Lone Star Sweetheart is full of wonderful small-town characters. The setting is quaint. I enjoyed the banter between Katherine and Ryan. I also enjoyed the antics played with some of the characters. Lone Star Sweetheart also has a mystery unraveling as the campaign heats up. Is someone trying to sabotage the race or are there just a few strange coincidences on the campaign trail?
Katherine is blunt but she does grow on you. I liked Ryan from the start, but he is not without a few faults of his own. Both characters are likeable and real. I enjoyed their growing romance. The mystery adds to the plot and helps the reader to keep turning pages until the end. I enjoyed the ending and the small town changes that I didn't see coming. Lone Star Sweetheart is a fun book that would make a great summer beach read--or a great read anywhere!
I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions within this review are my own.

I highly recommend Lone Star Sweetheart to every reader who loves to step into the pages of witty banter and a clean romance! This four-star entertaining story is complete with well-developed, lovable main characters, Ryan and Katherine, with unique personalities and talents.
Shannon Sue Dunlap absolutely nails romantic comedy! Her writing style is perfectly paced, engaging, and seamlessly descriptive.
One of the many ways the female main character pulled me into the story and had me loving her was these thoughts she had: “’Gracious words,’ she muttered under her breath. ‘Remember. Gracious words.’ Easier said than done. She’d been a straight shooter all her life. Ready to tell it like it was. Until an unexpected conviction hit her one morning when she was reading the book of Proverbs. Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. Had her healing ever brought healing to anyone? Doubtful. She wanted to be a honeycomb, but her blunt speech was more akin to apple cider vinegar.” This truly hit home with me. Countless times I have had the same convictions and same thoughts as Katherine. I am always striving to do live out Psalm 19:14: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.
Faith-based messages are intertwined throughout this fabulous novel to shine light on God’s Word, bring each reader closer to God, and share reminders of His absolute truths.
Lone Star Sweetheart is a delightful, enjoyable, captivating, clean, wholesome, satisfying, and lovable page-turner!
As a member of the Lone Star Sweetheart Launch Team, I received an eARC of Lone Star Sweetheart from the author, Shannon Sue Dunlap. I was not required to write a review or paid to do so. The words above are my honest review of this lovely, memorable, and humorous book.
I enjoyed this sweet book by Shannon Dunlap! I appreciate the inspirational themes. Im not a big fan of “battle of the sexes” and part of the plot especially at the beginning seemed to focus on that. The attraction between a Katherine and Ryan is strong even though they are complete opposites. She falls first! This cute romcom has a whodunnit cozy mystery as well! If you enjoy enemies to lovers, small town settings and witty banter add this book to your to-read list!
I received an ARC from the author. All opinions are my own. I was not required to provide a positive review.
This is a debut book for the author, and it is a great way to introduce herself to readers. The book is a quick, easy read full of lighthearted moments and romance. I finished it in a day.
I wasn't sure how the author would pull off having a husband and wife going against each other in a mayoral race without leaving one person a villain the readers would hate. While both characters are a little quirky, neither comes off as a villain. It was more like a case of doing the wrong thing for the right reason. And the main characters, who are the campaign managers for the couple, are both very likable and relatable.
I love books set in small towns, and this one is no different. Though the author does show the downsides of small-town life, it's done in a way that doesn't sour the reader on the townspeople. She does address the "everyone knows everyone's business" mindset. This is frequently referred to in small town books. But she also incorporates the problems small towns have with people growing up and leaving for bigger cities. While alluded to frequently in books and movies, I feel she takes it a step further and shows the reader what this does to the town in her descriptions.
With quirky characters and an enemy to lovers romance, Lone Star Sweetheart is an enjoyable read for those looking for a lighthearted, sweet romance. I give it four stars.
This story swept me off my feet!! I loved everything about it! I could almost reread it right now!! That’s how good Lone Star Sweetheart is!!
Katherine Bruno is a very passionate soul who is known to speak her mind. She’s been labeled as the town shrew of Sweetheart, TX. When the mayor’s wife asks her to help her run against her husband for upcoming mayor, Katherine meets handsome, clever and flirtatious big city Political Consultant Ryan Park. He gets under her skin in the best way, but falling for the enemy is not allowed!
Katherine has to combat her lack of political experience, someone trying to sabotage her at every turn, while also fighting her growing feelings for Ryan. Ryan sees past her outspoken personality and accepts her for who she is. But due to past experiences, Ryan has rejected God, and Katherine can’t risk her heart. Will Ryan return to his faith and stay with Katherine, or will he return to New York when the election ends?
I fell in love with Sweetheart, TX! Katherine was a fireball and I loved it! She didn’t hold back any punches and I loved how she didn’t back down from a challenge! Ryan was her perfect match! He loved to get her riled up and tease her!! Their witty banter had me laughing out loud and their chemistry was🔥🔥🔥!!! And I adored all the side characters!! They all added to the story in their own way!! I also thought the suspense addition to the story was great! I kept trying to figure out who was behind all the sabotage with Katherine! It was fun seeing Ryan’s protective side come out!
I loved all the faith elements and how Shannon tied it all together!!! Beautiful message of God’s love and how He always keeps His promises!!
Things I Loved: ❤️Small Town ❤️Enemies to Lovers ❤️Witty Banter ❤️Forced Proximity ❤️Sticky notes!!😍😉( trust me!! It’s good!!) ❤️Allergic Reaction scene🥰 ❤️Swoony kisses! ❤️Light suspense
Thank you @shannonsuedunlap for letting me be on your ARC team!! I loved your sweet book so much!! All thoughts and opinions are my own!
Enjoying being apart of this launch group and given an ARC of this super sweet rom com. Excited to share my review with you which is my personal thoughts and opinions. Lone Star Sweetheart had me laughing and enjoying the conflict and sparks flying between Katherine and Ryan. Katherine is a fiery, spitfire full of passion for her town, those she loves and God. She tries so hard to keep her fast, quick tongue lashings to a minimum but she’s honest and not one to hold back her true opinions on a matter which doesn’t gain her a lot of fans in this sweet, small town life. She gets roped in to helping Lanette run for Mayor and therefore gets pitted against the handsome, calm and collected Ryan from New York whose been hired to help the current Mayor get re-elected. There is conflict after conflict between the two that is hilarious, soooo awkward, and at times challenging for the heart. There is a little mystery as there seems to be some sabotage happening to keep Katherine from success in helping Lanette get elected. It helped to give the light hearted story some intense, on the edge of your seat scenes, which I loved. There is a very clear faith message about God that is intertwined very well into the story giving a background on where and why Ryan and Katherine both stand in their faith of God. Although this is a sweet, fun filled story it hits some great hard truths of life and how there’s different ways to handle what’s been thrown at you. You can turn from God, or to God. I hope you check this story out!
"zone Star Sweetheart" by Shannon Sue Dunlap is a fun read. It is a story that definely ended in a way that surprised me. It even surprise the main character also. This is a story that features a married couple both running for mayor. This story is a romance with a little mystery. The mystery is who is sabotaging the mayor's wife campaign. If a reader want a fun read that is clean, then I recommend this book. This story really shows the sacrifice that people make for the community that they love and it shows that sometimes even married couples disagreed but still they loved each other. I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
Okay, so this is a Christian fiction romance with the best rivals to love story. I love Ryan and Katherine’s chemistry, and the references to taming of the shrew, and the messages about faith in grief. 🥰 things I love about this book:
🗳️ The small town mayoral race backdrop— I love a good small town meddling in everyone’s lives romance 🥰 🗳️ The blunt and intense Katherine. I love that she is such a force that no one wants to go up against, but she’s also working on seasoning her words well. 🗳️ The way Ryan thinks. He’s smart, thoughtful, and clever, but not underhanded in the political arena. He’s also struggling with deeper things, but doesn’t let it control his sense of honor. 🗳️ Rivals to friends to more — the way they fostered their relationship over the course of the election and started to trust each other was the BEST. 🗳️ Dual POV— this isn’t as distinct as other books with a chapter by chapter basis, but I love that the books gives us both of the characters’ inner monologue. 🗳️ The faith message, that God is there when things go wrong, even if we don’t always understand. 🗳️ Just their banter 🥰 🗳️ STICKY NOTES 😮💨🫠🥰 you’ll see.
Anyway, definitely pick up this book!! It’s worth the read!!
(read for endorsement) Lone Star Sweetheart by Shannon Sue Dunlap gets my vote for "next book I want to see made into a movie"! This adorable romantic comedy combines small town charm and lovable characters with laugh-out-loud moments and a heartfelt message of faith. And it all made me smile big from start to finish. The feel-good read we all need right now.
This was such a cute read! Super fun with such sweet moments, amazing banter and a dash of mystery.
Katherine is a spitfire and knows it! I love how she’s always unabashedly asking God for “gracious words”. Ryan knows his job, knows how to do it and doesn’t want anything in his way…but a total sweetheart inside.
I love how the characters stay true to themselves throughout the story, yet manage to grow significantly. The faith thread was nicely done as well. And I absolutely loved the side characters. They were so much fun!
I definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting a good laugh with their swoon
I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I found this book delightful! Give me a few lovable characters, a unique setting and plot with a twist for me to love your book. I appreciate characters who stay true to their, well, character throughout a story, and these characters had consistency, insight and quirks that kept me happy.
I laughed out loud throughout then struggled towards the end due to tears. I read this book in two days, staying up until 1 in the morning to see how it ended! I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Lone Star Sweetheart by Shannon Sue Dunlap is an Inspirational Rom-Com. She is passionate, unfiltered, and loves her community. Katherine Bruno clashes with the gentle pace of her hometown – Sweetheart, Texas. When the mayor and his wife decide to go head to head in an election for the next mayor, Katherine finds herself drawn into the fray on the wife’s side.
Ryan Park, a big-city political consultant, comes to Sweetheart, Texas, to help the mayor win re-election. He finds himself inexplicably attracted to her. But his rejection of God makes this an impossible situation. Shannon Sue Dunlap does an excellent job developing the characters and the storyline.
I loved how this book included aspects of comedy, political mischief, and more. I found myself unable to put this book down. The twist at the end regarding the election made this book worth reading.
So if you enjoy inspirational romantic comedies, check out Lone Star Sweetheart by Shannon Sue Dunlap for yourself.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
I do not read them often, but Rom-Com books are always a fun read. I recently had the opportunity to read Lone Star Sweetheart by Shannon Sue Dunlap. Shannon Sue Dunlap is a "new to me" author and I was excited to read this book for that reason also.
Katherine Bruno is well-known and well-liked in her hometown of Sweetheart, Texas. Sweetheart, TX is a Small Town in Texas. She is recruited by the Mayor's Wife to help the Mayor's Wife beat her husband in an Election. The Mayor's Wife has also hired local Political Consultant, Ryan Park. Katherine and Ryan don't get along in the beginning, matter of fact Ryan really irritates Katherine. Katherine is trying to fight back the fact that her feelings are getting stronger for Ryan. Ryan rejects God due to a personal experience in the past and that is concerning to Katherine. He also loves her personality and her strong character. Will Ryan and Katherine have a chance at Romance? Will Ryan grow in his faith and decide to stay in Texas?
I truly enjoyed this book from the very first chapter. Katherine is such a wonderful woman and I LOVE that the townspeople love her so much. She is fun-loving, a good worker, and a town talker. Ryan is an interesting character. He seems to be a very strict and focused Campaign Manager. The pair together really create both chaos and structure. I appreciate the fact that Katherine wasn't ready to commit to a relationship knowing Ryan rejects God. I love that this book is Faith Based. I laughed so hard at the "trouble" Katherine and Ryan got into together, but they always came back down in an eloquent manner. The book is Filled with Love, Faith, Mystery, and Small Town feels. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Rom-Com books! WONDERFUL Book!
I love the name of the town in this book. Who wouldn’t want to live in Sweetheart, Texas where friendly people await you? The book is a fun read with a take on opposites attract. The mayoral race is heating up and our heroine Katherine finds herself in the middle of husband vs wife election fight for your life mayor of the town. Katherine is someone who knows what she wants and is not one to deal with nonsense well. Her determination to help Lanette win the race is going to be a fierce battle when Ryan comes into the picture.
Ryan is all in to help the mayor get re-elected but when he has a run in with Katherine, it looks like he is in for a fierce battle that gives us laughs. The shenanigans are many as the two face off against each other to get their candidate voted in as mayor. He will have his hands full trying to out maneuver Katherine.
The story is full of surprises, mystery and reminds me of The Gilmore Girls with the town people fighting with each other during town meetings. Some of the townspeople like Katherine are trying to preserve the small town feel with quaint shops that will attract tourists. I really enjoyed the feud between Katherine and Ryan and how one would try to get a step a head of the other. The mayor’s race is heating up as unattractive flyers pop up around down with Lynette as the feature . Talk about unflattering pictures. Poor Lynette is devastated by the slander of her name. Katherine needs to step up her political game if she is going to outwit Ryan.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
I was really excited to read this debut book from Shannon Sue Dunlap with an enemies to lovers trope and small-town political friction. Katherine was definitely prickly, sort of a shrew as she calls herself (and adds a Taming of the Shrew nod to the book). She is rough around the edges in every way and while she softens at the end, I was not expecting her to be so guarded and harsh to Ryan for so long. They shared and instant attraction, but while Ryan is kind and open, she goes back and forth with her feelings toward him, often coming across brisk. I didn't know this was Christian fiction and at first there wasn't anything alluding to that, but then towards the middle and end, it suddenly had a lot of Christian themes. I enjoy Christian fiction, so that's not a bad thing and I hope no one is reading it as a negative, it just wasn't consistent so it didn't feel like it flowed as naturally as it could have in the book. It kind of changed the tone of the story midway. There was also a sort of suspense plot weaved in that didn’t necessarily fit the original vibe at the beginning of the book, though I enjoyed the way it added mystery and kept me turning the pages at the end. I thought the sticky notes and kisses were really memorable and original. The setting was fun and the supporting cast did a good job of charming me to the town. Overall, this was a sweet contemporary romance and made for a nice sweet read. I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I don't really read romance novels that much anymore. But when Shannon Dunlap was asking if I would like to read her book and write a review and I wanted to help out a fellow writer. And I am happy I did. I was reading this book on my treadmill where I walk every morning and I enjoyed the book a lot. The book is broken into nice bit size chapters that make reading on the treadmill for example easier. I found it refreshing having characters I can relate to, that feel real. For example the real feeling process of feelings and thought that don't seem fit for an adult woman, and yet we have them. Even if I couldn't relate to Kathrine Bruno's temper and impulsiveness, I could relate to the tangled thoughts, the array of feelings, and the battle between trust and taking things in her own hands. The book has the right amount of romance, some laughter, some serious moments, some mystery. Even though I read the book by myself, I enjoyed going through the discussion questions at the end of the book. I like when authors do that; it gives me a bit more things to think about after I am through the book. Overall, I have to say I would recommend the book, especially for someone looking for a relaxing read. Definitely a book I would enjoy reading to wind down after a long day. My favourite quote of the book: "She blazes through every day as if she truly believes she can make a difference," he looked straight at her, "and she got a hard-bitten cynic like me believing it." Or this one: "Sometimes love is letting the other person win, even if you hold every ace."
What a super cute story! It was so fun being introduced to this author's writing.
First of all, the cover is adorable! There's no denying that. We're introduced to lifelong Sweetheart resident, Katherine Bruno. She's just been let go from her job and has no idea what's just around the corner for her. I liked her immediately. I think, because I relate to her unfiltered temper, I could understand her struggles with her unruly mouth!
The storyline was pretty amusing, with a little mystery thrown in to keep it moving along. The mayor and his wife are running against each other for the next election and it has the town divided. The mayor's wife convinces Katherine to be her campaign manager, which is a great fit because of her tenacity. Along comes hotshot, NYC Ryan Park who has been hired by the mayor to manage his campaign.
This is definitely a forced-proximity type of romance. The way that part of the story plays out is hilarious. This story would be perfect for a GAC movie. Ryan and Katherine get underneath each other's skin, but it also draws them to each other. It was so fun watching them work (and fight) together.
I really liked the faith part of the story. It wasn't heavy handed, but it was an important thread in the story. That comes along towards the middle/closer to the end, but I appreciated how it all played out with the main characters.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!
*I was sent the book for review. This is my personal opinion.
What a fun story! Katherine Bruno (who does not like to be called Katie) is a beautiful, feisty, intelligent young woman who is strong in her faith, but is working on controlling her sharp tongue and making her words more gentle. She’s doing much better with that until she unexpectedly becomes the campaign manager for the city mayor’s wife—-who is running for the position against her husband. Katherine finds herself pitted against the opposition’s handsome campaign manager, Ryan Park. It doesn’t take long for the battle between the two to begin and what happens next kept me smiling through the rest of the book.
Here’s what I liked about this book: The author could have turned this book into a sarcastic, funny story that would have kept us laughing. Instead, she did something better: She gave this book a good dose of heart-touching faith, hope, and love. Katherine struggles with controlling her temper, but she still has a deep faith and turns to Him to help her. She loves her town and her friends and is deeply loyal to both. She cares that Ryan recovers his own faith, and sticks to her principles throughout the whole funny campaign.
There’s a twist to the end of this story that I didn’t see coming until the very end. This book would make a great romantic comedy for PureFlix and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.
I voluntarily received a copy of this book from the publisher. All options are my own.
It is always wonderful to find a new to me author, and I was thrilled to read Shannon Sue Dunlop’s new book Lone Star Sweetheart, a sweet romantic comedy. Ryan is a NY political consultant that has been brought to town to get the mayor re-elected. Katherine is known in Sweetheart, TX for her short temper and passion She is currently out of a job and when the mayor’s wife asks to be her campaign manager she takes the job. She is immediately at odds with Ryan.
“Had her words ever brought healing to anyone? Doubtful. She wanted to be a honeycomb, but her blunt speech was more akin to apple cider vinegar.”
Katherine is a spunky character who you can not help but love. Ryan thinks she will be easily influenced, but has calculated incorrectly. Together they have wonderful chemistry that makes the story fabulous to read. The small town of Sweetheart gives us funny secondary characters and all the normal complications of a small town. I was laughing out loud as I read and found the humor, mystery, and great dialogue so delightful to read. I greatly enjoyed the author’s writing style.
"Katherine lacked the patience flirting required. If you liked someone, tell them. If you didn't , same thing . It saved a lot of heartache "
This story checked all the boxes for me with its great romance, humor ,and wonderful banter. I was very invested in the story and so enjoyed my time in Sweetheart, TX. I highly recommend Lone Star Sweetheart.
I received an advanced copy from the publisher and all opinions are my own.
Contemporary romance is not usually my thing, but I am so glad I gave Lone Star Sweetheart a chance. A sweet and swoony romance, it also contains elements of humor, suspense, and faith.
Dunlap is a very talented author, bringing to life this sweet small town of Sweetheart with its fun and quirky characters. To be honest, however, it took me a while to like both of the main characters. Katherine is very headstrong and blunt to the point of her own detriment. Since we first meet Ryan from Katherine’s point of view, I was also wary of him at first. While Ryan’s charming personality won me over quickly, it took me a bit longer for me to warm up to Katherine.
Ryan and Katherine start out as enemies, but their banter could almost be described as cute and their friendship unfolds naturally. While they are forced to work together in the same office and are forced to be neighbors, nothing about their relationship is forced.
Overall, if you are a fan of romantic comedy with a cozy mystery thrown in, I would recommend Lone Star Sweetheart. It’s a sweet story that will make your heart melt.
I had received a complimentary copy of the book and this is my honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed Lonestar Sweetheart. Katherine is feisty and short-tempered. Ryan is cool and sophisticated. They're pitted against each in a small town mayoral race as campaign managers, but they have to share the same office. Just enough space and distance for conflict:) Katherine is a hometown girl, and Ryan is the big city outsider. Dunlap does an excellent job of creating friction and attraction between the two from the start. As the campaign heats up, the stakes rise as Katherine and Ryan battle each other in political arena and within their own hearts. Will distrust or love win? Will the prodigal Ryan turn back to the Lord? Can Ryan and Katherine work together to find the saboteur who threatens the campaign and puts Katherine's life at risk? This book packs a good dose of suspense, humor, love, and faith, with romance being the overarching feature.
This is a sweet romance filled with touches of humor that doesn't let up as these two battle each other in the campaign.
I usually read historical romance, but this contemporary Rom Com was a lot of fun and a good break.
I will admit up front that contemporary rom-com stories aren’t usually my preference. But Shannon Sue Dunlap’s Lone Star Sweetheart has me rethinking the entire genre. I love old movies, and this book is reminiscent of the quick witted, comedic flair of a Spencer Tracy-Katherine Hepburn movie. Desk Set or Adam’s Rib. Ms. Dunlap may be a young author, but she has an old soul.
Lone Star Sweetheart is Book One in the Sweetheart Series and takes place in the fictional town of Sweetheart, Texas. It stars another Katherine—Katherine Bruno—who grew up in this sleepy town. She has two areas in her life which she struggles. First, she can’t control her tongue, which regularly gets her into hot water or causes the townsfolk to be miffed at her. Second, she hasn’t quite found a career that holds any appeal.
Then there is Ryan Parks—slick New York campaign manager hired by the town’s mayor when the mayor’s own wife decides to run against him. The minute the two meet there are all kinds of sparks—first the good kind, quickly followed by the not-so-good kind. And when the mayor’s wife decides to hire Katherine for her own campaign manager, the entire town gets involved in the battle of the sexes.
Ms. Dunlap does such a great job bringing Sweetheart to life, I had to keep reminding myself that it’s not a real place. If it was, I’d be planning a trip to visit it for myself. The backstory of Sweetheart could be Anywhere U.S.A.—as long as it’s a Southern place—and the side characters are every bit as well developed as Katherine and Ryan.
Of course, it’s a rom-com, so you expect a happy ending. But there is so much more to this tale. Mystery, extortion, and some really cute puppies. I cannot wait until Book Two comes out—I’ll be the first in line to read it.
If you enjoy witty repartee, rich characters, and romance, you won’t want to miss out on Lone Star Sweethearts.
What could go wrong when a husband and wife are running against each other for mayor?!
Oh, a whole lot. And it becomes hilarious.
The book actually focuses on the two campaign managers. Katherine is for the wife. She’s been considered the shrew of the town but surely she can use that to her advantage here!
Ryan is for the opposition, er the husband and current mayor.
Can the two become friends or more despite being on opposing sides? Which side will win? And will it cause an all-out war?
This is such a fun romantic comedy that you’re going to find yourself sighing at the scenes but also laughing out loud quite a bit too. I really enjoyed the characters and their interactions and would definitely recommend the book!
