The Chinese Horoscopes Guide to Relationships: Love and Marriage, Friendship and Business

Rate this book
Are you and your partner always quarreling, for no apparent reason?  Could it be that one of you is a Dragon and the other a Dog?

If you were looking for a creative person to work for you, would it help to know their birth year?  Someone born in the Year of the Monkey would be a strong choice.

Were you born in the Year of the Rooster?  Maybe it's no surprise that your closest friends are a Horse and a Rabbit.

The Chinese Horoscopes Guide to Relationships is a fascinating guide to the secrets of the astrological system that has been practiced in China for years.  By identifying the people in your life--business associates, family members, teachers, friends, lovers, and spouses--through their respective signs, you will gain valuable insight into their personalities and aptitudes, their quirks and proclivities.  More important, you will discover how your own sign and its traits affect how you get along with others born under different signs.  At long last, you will have the astrological explanations as to why you can be so compatible with one person yet so completely at odds with someone else.

Theodora Lau was born in Shanghai and lived with her husband and two children in Hong Kong before moving to California, where she is presently settled.  She is the author of The Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes, now in its third edition.

Surprisingly informational and at times very accurate to my personality and to others I lent to read. I'm more biased for the Chinese horoscopes since I always find the Western Astrology not like me at all. The book not only named traits of what each sign is mainly known for but elaborated on it, for example, it didn't just say the Dog is loyal but loyal to the point of companionship and standing up for morals and injustice. The book also addresses relationships with other signs and playing a role like 'as a teacher' or 'as a boss'. It also goes on to explain why certain signs get along with others and why some are complete opposites which doesn't necessarily make them enemies. They can actually be really good friends. The book even addresses that the time of birth adds to the personality of the year you were born. Just remember that the time in the book goes according to Chinese time so if you were born on the other side of the world, you'd have to do some math to get it to convert to the time in China. I also like the Chinese Kanji explaining that before the signs were named after animals, they were just symbols that represented personality.

The only downside is certain words repeated that I didn't really get. 'Clout' is one of them meaning 'a blow' but I felt it was wrongly translated, like it might have had a more significant meaning in Chinese but I don't know what. Also most of the signs were named as a guy as in "He would have..." or "He is..." which made me think that there could be a separate book for women and what she would do differently than the guys. If there isn't then maybe gender neutral wording would have been better.

All in all, it's a pretty great book and will point out why you might hate that certain person at work or why you argue so much with one of your siblings but not the other. It is however not a book for matching up signs for love. It does cover a little bit about it but you'd have to find another book if you want one just focused on love relationships.
