I love books. Not just a little bit, but a lot. Books were my best friends when I was growing up. Books didn’t care if I was new to a town or to a class. They were always there, my trustiest of companions. Until they turned on me and said I had to write them.

I can tell you that my own personal happily ever after included writing books. I’ve always said that an HEA is a work in progress. It’s true in my marriage, my friendships, and in my career. I am constantly nurturing my muse as we dive into new tales, new tropes, new characters and more.

After seventeen years back in Texas, we relocated to the Pacific Northwest in search of seasons, new experiences, and new geography. I can’t wait to discover what life (and my muse) have in store for me.

Maybe writing was always my destiny and romance my fate. After all, my grandmother wasn’t a fan of picture books and used to read me her Harlequin Romance novels.

Friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, friends to enemies to lovers, you name it, I love them and love to write them. I started with Earth Witches Aren’t Easy, the first in the Chance Monroe trilogy, but my characters and I have traveled a long way since I created that urban fantasy world.

One of the series I hear my readers recommend the most is the Untouchable series followed in quick succession by the Vandals, and that just delights me. No lie, whenever one of my readers brings up my wolves, I do a little a fist pump.

I’m active on social media, and I love hearing from readers. Feel free to tag me with a question about any of my books, or just say hi!

One of the worst short stories I ever read.
Let's start with Rebecca. The heroine is a 28 year old virgin who goes in a club for a one night stand (remember she's a virgin) and guess what? Her date is none other than her high school boyfriend who dumped her 11 years ago.
She forgets in about 5 minutes how heartbroken and lonely she's been all this years and jumps in his bed like there's no tomorrow.
Luke, the hero, lost his sister and mother on 9/11 attacks and he enroled in the army but not before dumping the girl who took care of him and his father after that terrible tragedy. Of course he could have married her back then, like other teenage boys who married their girlfriends before joining the military, but why do such a thing when he just didn't give a shit about how heartbroken she might be?
Rebecca, like the proud and independent woman she is (I'm joking here) forgives him easily and gives him her virginity in his car in a deserted parking lot. Classy girl.
She has no dignity or self respect. Luke is an asshole who used lame excuses for breaking her heart and who didn't give a shit about her feelings for 11 years.

It always amazes me when, in just a few pages, an author can grab my attention, make me love her characters and tug at my heart with her storytelling. I was bowled over by this story of second chance romance between one-time high school sweethearts.

Luke Dexter has returned home after a decade of doing his patriotic duty. He and his men make a pact to do something normal to help adjust to being out of the service so they all sign up for Madam Eve's 1 Night Stand dating service. Madam Eve sends him a cryptic email that not only tells him where to meet his date, but speaks of second chances. It all makes sense when the gorgeous woman in the green dress waiting for him at the bar is Rebecca Rainier, the childhood sweetheart that he broke her heart when he left her. This is his chance to make things more than right.

Becca has agreed to humor her business partner who has asked so little of her in the past by going on a date before she starts in on her next event planning job. She is now successful and owner of her own business, but her broken dreams from the past keep interfering with her ability to be in a relationship. And now, out of that past and into the bar walks the boy of her girlhood dreams. He hurt her so badly and one look at him tells her that she isn't over him and he is capable of breaking her healed heart all over again.

Naturally, because it is a short story, things get right to it. I like how there is an introduction to the characters and the issue between them after a dip into the past, but then it is straight to the point. Luke shows himself a real man by taking responsibility for his actions in the past and the effect they are still having on Becca in the present. Becca, in spite of her pain and hesitation to put herself out there for heartbreak again still accepts the truth about her feelings. I loved the poignant tone of this story that has a feeling of authenticity when it comes to the story's backdrop of military service and how it affects those who serve and the people who are in their lives.

I am so glad that this is part of a series of books and I look forward to reading more. Though this is a 1NS story, it is more romantic spice than erotic. I recommend it to those who enjoy contemporary romance and military romance and don't mind it in short story form.

Hearing this author for the first time? Me too! But, being new to this author doesn't stop me from enjoying this short story. Its cool, its great, its hot! Whatever I say about this novel, would give the thrill away. So, for the first time in my reviewing history, there is no plot explanation..read and know for yourself. :) But, don't worry, there is some character review here, instead!

Luke.. Oh god, Luke! If someone can make you swoon over a man, in just less than 10 minutes by talking about him, it would be Heather Long (I think). Luke is a Marine - strong, tough and charming. I hate when men play I-hurt-you-because-I-want-to-protect-you card with the girl. But, can't help my swooning part.. :)

Rebecca is a regular girl with strong and kind attitude and I.adore.her. I am a romantic, and can't help praying for Rebecca.

I forgot to say, this is erotic romance..so kids below 18, please avoid this!

For such a short novel, its so good and so engaging! Would like to read more from this series.

I really enjoyed this book. I'm impressed with the character development Heather Long was able to accomplish in such a short story. I would have given it 5 stars except one line near the end changed everything for me. You're probably wondering what the line was: "She was a virgin."

Why for the love of God do they always make the heroine a virgin? And an almost 30 year old virgin at that. She waited 11 years for him? I found that hard to believe. This is a very specific pet peeve of mine and probably won't bother most people. Still it grates on my nerves. Are we supposed to believe that if the hero had never walked back into her life that she would have died a virgin? Still, that was one small thing that bothered me and if it wasn't for that then I would have given it 5 stars.

A cute-ish short book. I was pretty pleased with it considering it was really short and the author had to cram a lot of the couple’s history along with the ‘today’.

A second chance love story. The writing was poignant and grabbed my attention from the start. Due to the short length, the pace launches into an abrupt fifth gear near the end. That and a few niggling unexplained things made me mark down the rating.

I love second chance at love stories where the hero and heroine meet, separate, and re-meet under better or very different circumstances. This story sits firmly in that category. Short, sweet, to the point, it had me wishing it was quite a bit longer. But for its length, it was nice.

Awesome story by a fantastic storyteller!

Although it was a short story, Long managed to create a full story complete with believable circumstances, irresistible characters and steamy and fulfilling sexy scenes.

A great read--highly recommend!

A very short read and promising start to a series. I've read another book in the middle of the series and decided to start from #1.

I really want to like it but it bothered me a lot that after 11 years of heartbreak, Rebecca was ready to forgive Luke and jump his bones so quickly. Yes unbelievably she remained a virgin while he obviously was not...how unfair is that?!

What Luke went through was tragic. Sep 11 robbed him of his mother, sister and father in a way. He lost his childhood, dream career as footballer, and the love of his life. He was asinine to make such unilateral decisions regarding his and Rebecca's lives, and even his older self acknowledged it...only now.

What I cannot accept is his seeming grovelling now, it was unbelievable. If their mutual friend had not fixed them up on this dodgy 1Night Stand blind date... Just when was Luke going to go find Rebecca to beg her forgiveness and grovel for a second chance? Did he even intend to?

He only did it now when he saw her and the regrets and feelings bombarded him, but nowhere was it indicated he had any intention to look her up again. Hewas all busy setting up Mike's Place!

I'm not sure if it's the length of the novella that let to such important points being left out, but otherwise this book had the potential to be really satisfying.

Great start and intro to Mike,s Place, which would be central to the rest of the series.

I started this series years ago but never got it all, when my son gave me a gift certificate I knew I had to buy more in this series. The first book in the Always a Marine is the start of Mike's Place this is a short story to read. The first book is Rebecca Rainier and Luke Dexter's story. Luke has got the men and women from Mike's place to sign-up with Madam Eve's 1 Night Stand dating service. Luke walked away from Rebecca eleven years ago when he joined the Marines and he never stopped loving her. He joined because he lost his Mother and Sister in the plane crash that happened September 11th, 2001. I recommend this book

Usually novellas leave a reader hanging, wanting more. They're quickies meant to help tide you over until the next book in a series is out or to introduce you to a new author. Rarely have I seen a novella that offered much more than that—but I found it in Heather Long's newest novella, Once Her Man, Always Her Man!

Rebecca and Luke were childhood friends and highschool sweethearts. They were crazy for each other—up until the last part of their senior year, when 9/11 happened, a tragedy that even affected their small town. Luke, whose father was already a Marine, enlisted even before graduation, leaving Rockwell—and Rebecca—behind. He loved her, but felt that she deserved a better life, not one stuck in Texas, worrying about him in Iraq. It was a mistake, and one he's regretted ever since.

Out of the military now, he's came back to the area to start a rehab or sorts for returning Vets. When the rest of his team signs up for a dating service (1NightStand) he does so as well—to support them more than anything. After all, he still thinks of Rebecca...

His first setup is in a club-and who does he find waiting there? Rebecca, his love, the one he pushed away 11 years ago. It's rare to get a second chance, but Luke's taking this one. Can he explain to Rebecca why he left, why he never came home—why he stills loves her to this day? Will she listen?

OHM,AHM is indeed a quick story, only a few chapters total. But what it lacks in length it more than makes up for in romance, writing quality, emotions, and steamy chemistry! I absolutely loved reading Rebecca and Luke's story, devouring it in only about 20 minutes. And while, yes, I would have liked it to be a full length novel, it wasn't absolutely necessary—Heather manages to weave quite a story for us even with such limited pages to work with.

There was depth to the story, the background and characters—something that not even all novels have, little loan most novellas. Their story blew me away, and I'll even admit to blinking back a few tears while reading, as their relationship was very touching, very sweet. And once they worked out their problems and decided to, ahem, show their love for one another....Well, I'll just leave it at “hot damn!”. Yes, a Marine definitely knows how to treat his woman...*sigh*

5 STARS! For a quick, but totally satisfying, second-chance-at-love romance, this is the perfect choice! Sweet, touching and very sexy, this novella is a must read! And as it is short, it won't take you long to finish—even better for those times when reading a 400 page book is made almost impossible by our hectic lives! I will definitely be adding Heather Long to my list, and I look forward to seeing what one of her full length novels has to offer. Because when she can make me fall in love with a book in less than 40 pages, imagine what she can do in 300! :)

September 11, 2001 changed many people's lives. Not only were thousands killed, but the effects of their loss reached countless family and friends. Two such people were Luke Dexter and Rebecca Rainier.

Luke lost his mother and sister on a plane that fateful day, but the ripple effect caused much more loss. His father reenlisted in the military, and after earning his GED, Luke signed up for the Marines, determined to avenge the loss of his family. The only challenge to his sudden change in life plans? His high school sweetheart. Leaving her behind was one of the hardest things he ever had to do, but it was for the best - a cold break was the best way to help her move on.

Rebecca was the all-American girl; beautiful cheerleader, hardworking student, and determined to make her dreams come true. She and Luke were deeply in love, but after his life was shattered by an evil act of terrorism, she didn't imagine her dreams would be crushed as well. She initially tries to take care of Luke and his father, but her once loving boyfriend quickly turns cold. When she finally confronts him, he admits he's enlisted and is leaving her behind to fight on the front lines of Afghanistan. Devastated when Luke does not answer her multiple letters, nor comes to see her when she assumed he had come home, she struggles to move on with her life.

Luke, along with the rest of his Marine buddies, signed up with Madame Eve's 1Night Stand service, and although hesitant, is looking forward to meeting his date. He's reminded that life doesn't always offer a second chance just as he sees the beautiful Rebecca sitting at the bar...

Ms. Long is a master of emotions. Her characters are so well developed despite the brevity of the story, I found myself relating to each and every one of them. I understood Luke's reasons for fighting, and for leaving Becca, yet my heart broke for the poor girl left behind. I was cheering for Luke to win her back, but ironically enough, that would be my one negative to this book - I think she gave in just a little too easily (but I'm still thrilled she did).

The writing is fabulous, dialogue is spot on, and the author's use of metaphors and illustrative wording is outstanding. Few can turn a phrase as well as Heather long. This book is the first of the series, but I have read them out of order and nothing is missed by doing that. If you're looking for a quick hot read that still manages to tug on your heartstrings, you cannot go wrong with the Always A Marine series!

Oh my, but I loved this story. I'm mad it wasn't any longer but that's just because I wasn't ready to be done with Luke and Rebecca. Normally I'm not the biggest fan of short stories, they just always feel rushed or as if things are missing. That was definitely not the case with this one. The author was able to make it feel like a complete story. I especially loved that we were able to see glimpses of the characters pass. I felt it just added so much more to the story and made the feelings that they felt so much more real.

Luke and Rebecca were high school sweethearts and totally in love. They had plans to go off to college together and eventually get married. Then 9/11 happened and everything changed. Luke decided to go off and join the Marines and do his duty for his country and while leaving behind Rebecca to pick up the pieces of her broken heart. Now eleven years later both are still dealing with the after affects of Luke's decision.

When Luke left Rebecca was crushed and never has really been able to get over the hurt and heartache. She has kept herself closed off from other men and has focused primarily on her business. When her business partner sets her up on a blind date, she reluctantly agrees to go. Imagine her surprise when it's Luke that shows up to meet her.

Luke has never forgiven himself for leaving Rebecca behind but in his mind he thought it would be better to cut her loose rather than have her wait for him. He's never gotten over her and the love he felt for her. When he is set up on a blind date he never expects to see Rebecca sitting at the bar waiting for him. Luke knows this is his opportunity to fix their relationship and explain his mistake, but will Rebecca ever forgive him.

This was such a great read. It's full of so much emotion and chemistry. You can feel the love between them, it literally jumps off the page and smacks you in the face but in such a good way. These two had a lot of hurt and pain to get through to get back to one another and I think it was done in just the right way. I'm glad I picked up this story because I really enjoyed it and I will definitely be on the lookout for more from this author.

Can Madame Eve bring two high school sweethearts together again after he breaks her heart when he enlists and leaves her to fight after 9/11?
Luke Dexter lost his mother and sister in the terrorist attack on the United States that fateful September day. His father was a marine through and through and re-enlisted to fight his own demons and to avenge his family. Luke also enlists but doesn’t bother to talk about his decision with his girlfriend. In fact, he decides to break her heart. Luke is a typical guy who doesn’t want to talk about his feelings and thinks that he knows what is best for the people around him. He didn’t want Rebecca to wait for him and knew that if he stayed with her, he wouldn’t be able to leave. It is his way of protecting his own heart rather than protecting Rebecca.
Rebecca Rainier dreamed of babies and a marriage until Luke broke her heart. He left her without a real explanation. No man could compare to her memories of Luke. Yet she is strong enough to move on, setting up her own company and becoming successful in her own right. When Madame Eve brings these two lovers together, can they find the love that they lost?
Once Her Man, Always Her Man is a touching story of a marine who never forgot his first love. I loved Luke’s determination to protect and avenge his family and Rebecca. No matter that he frustrated me and Rebecca with his decision to leave, he does have a good character. Rebecca is such a loving, caring woman who was strong enough to go on when her heart was broken. I admired her determination.
The graphic descriptions in Once Her Man, Always Her Man of what war was like and how returning soldiers deal with the aftermath, touched my heart. I have family who are military and know that they would have given their all for our country. Hearing what Luke and his friend, Mike, went though will leave you in tears. But it is the steamy sex that will leave you breathless. I loved the tenderness and spontinaity of Rebecca and Luke. They can’t wait to get their hands on each other. If you love a tender love story with passionate sex and strong characters, you are going to love Once Her Man, Always Her Man.

Sarah's Review:
I re-read this story today so that I could post a review for it and I remember why I fell in love with this series. What drew me in from the beginning was that it was about Marines because I think Marines are sexy and I wanted to read more. However, this story provided me a different view of the United States Marine Corps.

Luke's business plan to open Mike's Place is part of the reason that he returned home to Texas. Rebecca was the other part of that reason.

Luke follows through on the "obligation" to utilize Madame Eve's 1 Night Stand service and Rebecca ended up being Luke's date for the night. Luke knew that he was going to have to make up for 11 years worth of time after he left Rebecca to join the Marines after September 11th, 2001. Luke's mother and sister died on one of the planes after the tour of colleges on the East Coast. Luke's father, who was a retired Marine, was reactivated and assisted Luke in joining the Marines.

Rebecca, Luke's high school sweetheart, was left behind when Luke joined the Marines, resulting in a broken heart. Over the course of 11 years, she has built her own business. Her company is also taking care of the party for Mike's Place, not knowing that Luke is the head of Mike's Place.

I love how Ms. Long brought the high school sweethearts back together but didn't make it as simple as Luke walking in the door and Rebecca running right to him with open arms. She made Luke suffer a little bit for his stupidity as a young man who was going through a horrible trauma. I loved that Rebecca, despite 11 years, still loves Luke and demanded answers about why he left.

This is the story that began my addiction to Always a Marine! I am always anxious for the latest one. I believe that the reason I love these stories so much is because I am a Social Worker and I want to focus my career on working with Veterans. Mike's Place is a perfect example of a place that I would love to work.

High school sweethearts ripped apart by the events of 9/11 are reunited eleven years later in this edition to the 1NightStand series.

Luke Dexter signs up with 1NightStand to show his men what you should try to do in order to reconnect with with civilian life. When Madame Eve sends him a text message to tell him what his date would be wearing and that this was his second chance, he wasn't sure what to think. But when he spies the woman in green at the bar, he's transported back eleven years to high school and the love of his life, Rebecca Rainier.

Rebecca agreed to her 1NightStand date after her business partner convinced her it would be good for business. But the last person she expected was Luke. She had loved him with ever fiber of her being and was crushed when he enlisted in the Marines, took his GED and left their small Texas town. While she had always held out an ounce of hope that he would come back home for her, she was finally ready to try and move on. But seeing Luke drags her right back to when she was eighteen.

Luke and Becca both still love the other, but Luke knows he needs to do whatever he can to make up for the way he ended things. Becca has always used Luke as the measuring stick she held against every other man she's dated, only to have them not measure up. But it's funny how a heart felt "I'm sorry" can change everything.

This was a short emotional read, but you are immediately drawn into the story and want these two to work through their issues. If you have a few minutes and want to fill it, this is a good one to pick up.

I think technically this book was intended to be classified as an erotica story, being that it's part of the 1 Night Stand series. However, the story lacked the ummmm pre-requisites of that for me. However it was a sweet story of high school sweethearts who were separated and then found each other again.

I always enjoy a second chance story. Everything was going well for me here. Rebecca was being fixed up with the 1 Night Stand service for a night of hot passion. Luke had recently gotten back in town (or close to town) after his military service and had agreed to use the 1 Night Stand service as the rest of his team members.

Neither one knowing that the person they would find was their high school sweetheart. Luke had left Rebecca when he enlisted thinking it would be unfair to force her to wait for him while he was in danger. She deserved to live her life.

Except she never did. And here's my issue with this story and why I took a couple of stars off. Rebecca has been waiting for Luke since he left. She never lost hope that he would come back for her. And I mean waiting in every sense of the word. So it was hard for me to understand how she found herself on a date with the 1 Night Stand service. It didn't make any sense.

However, I enjoyed the authors' writing and I am looking forward to see what comes next for the rest of Luke's military friends.

Love the way the author included a little back story to offer glimpses into the characters' past and what happened to them. Rebecca's heart was broken eleven years ago by her boyfriend who left her to join the Marines. It came to a shock for her when he simply told her about his plans without consulting her. She sent him letters even after he was gone but the moment she found out that he did came back for a little while without looking for her, she stopped sending any to him.

Luke left for a reason and came back to open a rehabilitation center and Rebecca just so happened to be the person in charge for planning its opening gala. I believe fate was kind to them. Even if not for the 1Night Stand Service, they'd have met at the opening gala. But that's besides the point, it was so much interesting to have met at the Club prior to the opening gala. I'm beginning to think that this Madame Evangeline has some psychic powers. I'm left wondering how would she know that Rebecca and Luke had a past and sent him that message before the two of them met each other. Totally wow. One thing that irked me was the fact that how Rebecca was quick to forgive him after listening to his story during their car ride. Nevertheless, the emotions of the two main characters were well-written and the story is enjoyable. I'd recommend this to those who loves a fast romance read.

Disclosure: I received a review copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Read this review on my blog! --> Once Her Man, Always Her Man by Heather Long

This is not my first read in this series, but don’t worry they are all good stand-alone. Several short books with very spicy encounters. I love a good erotica, but these books are mostly all about a good sex and a fun night.

These one was actually a good surprise because the two characters had a relationship while in high school and previously had feelings for each other. Rebecca is very successful in her job but is still in love with her high school boyfriend, so since him no boy has ever made her feel the same way. A friend of her made her sign for the 1 Night Stand program for a night of fun.

Luke left town and joined the army but now he’s back and never considered that the women meeting him for a 1 Night Stand would be his ex-girlfriend. So now he has one more chance to make things right and this night is all about forgiveness.

I loved the way both characters are still in love and trying to understand how to move forward after all these years, plus the sex was crazy good.

This was a really easy and quick read but a very good one. Luke and Rebecca were high school sweet hearts until that terrible day of September 11th, 2001. Luke lost his mother and sister on those deadly flights that day. He also lost his father in way because he could not cope with the loss of his beloved wife and daughter. Luke’s father was a former Marine, who re-enlisted after that fateful day. Luke followed in his father’s footsteps, enlisting in the Marines and leaving his life in Texas to help protect his country and take out his anger over seas. Luke left Rebecca with many questions and a broken heart. She thought she would never forgive him for what he did. Eleven years later, Rebecca is a successful business owner who does not have much of a love life. She is set up on a date from 1Night Stand but doesn’t realize her date is Luke Dexter. When Luke realizes that somehow he is given a second chance with Rebecca, he tries to explain why he left her and hopes that they can start their relationship anew. I love the 1Night Stand Novellas. They are short but pack a big punch. I’m looking forward to reading more the 1Night Stand Series.

I was hesitant to start the "Always a Marine" series by Heather Long because of the number of books that were already part of it. Since each one appeared to be a stand-alone, I decided to just go ahead and read the first one and lo and behold, it was really quick read! Hahaha! And here I was thinking that I was going to finally get over my novella kick. ^.^

"Once Her Man, Always Her Man" was short but was chock-full of what you would find in a standard novel-length book. The story about second chances pulled me in and you can't help but root for Luke and Rebecca. There are some books that aren't able to do that, even after many chapters, but this little nugget of goodness succeeded where others have failed, and without needing hundreds of pages to do so. ^.^

There were a few editing issues but these weren't overly distracting.

Five stars for "Once Her Man, Always Her Man". This goes on my list of favorite novellas and would highly recommend it to my fellow book whores. ^.^

My Rating: ★★★★

Book Description:
Fulfilling a favor and executing a business plan, Luke Dexter arrives at Dallas’ Sybarite Club for a one-night stand. He never imagined he’d come face to face with the woman he left behind a decade earlier.

Rebecca Rainier fell in love with Luke Dexter in high school and was crushed when he dumped her to join the Marines after 9/11. Set up on a 1Night Stand by her business partner, nothing could prepare Rebecca for who her date is.

Can Luke and Rebecca bridge the pain of a decade-long abandonment, in one cold Texas night?

My Thoughts:
Such a sweet story about loss, pain, and timeless love. This story really hit home because it's something that we all hear about everyday but it was so well done. Mike's story really brought tears to my eyes. I really enjoyed this heartwarming little story. Great job Ms. Long.

I love second chance romance stories and Once Her Man Always Her Man definitely fits the bill. Luke and Rebecca were high school sweethearts. Everything in their lives were perfect until 9/11 happened. Luke joins the Marines and leaves Rebecca behind, heartbroken. Ten years later, Luke returns and realizes that his feelings for Rebecca never faded.

I thought that Luke and Rebecca's story was sweet, poignant and sexy. I liked how despite this being a novella, the author was able to provide the background information about their relationship without feeling like we missed out on any of the emotional connection that they had as teenagers.

I enjoyed Once Her Man and felt connected to the characters. I am definitely interested in reading the next novella in this series.

A great second chance story!

Luke, during a tragic and painful time in his life, made a decision that broke his heart and the girl he loved. It wasn’t a matter of right or wrong, he just didn’t handle it well. Then, he was a boy finding his way. Eleven years later, he was a man staring down the consequences of that decision – trying to make things right.

I enjoyed the emotion and the heat between him and Becca – and the back story that lays the foundation for the upcoming books. I’m very much looking forward to reading them.

This was a great quick read. Luke enlisted when he was 18 shortly after his mother and sister were killed in one of the planes that crashed into the world trade buildings on 9/11. He broke up with his girlfriend Rebecca so she wouldn't wait for him to return just in case he didn't. Very sad beginning but they get their second chance at love.
Sweet, sad, steamy, second chance at love...this quick read had all of them in spades.
