This e-book collects the first four issues of Innsmouth Magazine. Journey to Innsmouth, work at the office and the job from hell, find evil at sea, listen to the lament of the black goat, and most of all experience the horrific, weird and fantastic.
Stories by Nick Mamatas, Ann K. Schwader, Orrin Grey, David Conyers, Charles R. Saunders, Nadia Bulkin, and many others.
Silvia Moreno-Garcia is the author of several novels, including Mexican Gothic, Gods of Jade and Shadow and The Daughter of Doctor Moreau. She has also edited a number of anthologies, including the World Fantasy Award-winning She Walks in Shadows (a.k.a. Cthulhu's Daughters). Mexican by birth, Canadian by inclination.
Innsmouth Magazine: Collected Issues 1-4 is a collection of twenty eight stories some of them longer and some of them very short. I didn't like all the stories. Quite frankly, some of them are beyond boring. Still, some are perfect. That's not really surprising in an anthology. As weird as it may sound to people who find him tedious at times, I loved the ones closer to Lovecraft's way of telling a story more than others. I won't mark the ones I didn't like.
By The Sea, By The Sea by Caroline Totten A little sister is born. A purplish creature with scales. "Innsmouth people don't live long" the farther said to his oldest daughter. And her sister only lived those two years. And buried at sea. ★★★ interesting short story.
Paula Stiles's swimming lessons take place on the North Shore, but a boy afraid off water turns into a horseback riding event. Great suspense ★★★★
Beneath The Red City by Matthew Bey A man on the third floor lives for the Red City dwellers. The dogs he feeds the guts of men and woman. A gore classic ★★★★★
Nature VS Nurture by Orrin Grey After capturing a ghoul a man raises it from infancy to a full grown gorilla sized creature. ★★★★★
Red Goat Black Goat by Nadia Bulkin "Don't touch the goats" the babysitter is told. Goats who watch over the children with a great twist. Mytho horror mix ★★★.5
The Mountain that Eats Men by Caleb Jordan Schultz ★★★
Estelle Makes the Casino Run by Pamela Rentz ★★ A really good horror but what was attacking the bus. Kinda reminded me of Twilight Zone's "There is something on the Wing" 2 stars because ending was horrible.
What happens when you take good cosmic horror and take out the "cosmic" and "good" elements? This collection. I stopped 18% of the way through it; I'm happy that I did.
Despite the magazine's name, its contents do not consistently focus on Lovecraftian subject matter, let alone Innsmouth itself---which suits me fine. What we have instead is a variety of weird tales, modern rather than 'traditional' in style, few of which are reprints, from writers representing an unusually wide range of ethnic backgrounds (Filipino, Hungarian, Javanese, Argentine, etc.). Many of the writers are novices or amateurs, but overall the quality of the writing is high.
For me, the standout stories were "What's in a Shell" by French writer Nathalie Boisard-Beudin---surely the only cosmic horror story about a matrioshka doll---and Avery Cahill's "One Dead Eye", an ingeniously weird riff on H.G. Wells's "The Remarkable Case of Davidson's Eyes".
Daniel Jose Older, previously known to me only as a noisy defamer of Lovecraft, contributes a lively, pulpish piece, evidently a teaser for a novel rather than a self-contained short story. Contributions by Orrin Grey, David Conyers, Caleb Jordan Schulz and Raymond G. Falgui also linger in the memory.
This is a fun collection of Lovecraftian stories that gets better with each successive issue. Recommended for Lovecraft aficionados looking for something new to read.
