Rise of the Arcane Fire

Rate this book
After her parents died in a fire and her grandfather disappeared, Meg Whitlock thought her life had come to a standstill. But when she learned that the pocket watch her grandfather left her was really an intricate key, Meg, with the help of a stable hand named Will, uncovered the Amusementists: members of an elite secret society dedicated to discovery and shrouded in mystery.

Now the Amusementists are convening in London, and Meg is determined to join their ranks. But being the first girl in the Order has its difficulties, and with Will away in Scotland Meg fears she can’t trust anyone but herself. Her worries are only supported by the sabotage happening at the academy, with each altered invention being more harmful than the last.

With threats lurking around every corner, and while trying to prove her worth as the first female Amusementist, Meg must uncover the identity of the academy’s saboteur before the botched devices become deadly. And after she finds evidence of a sinister and forbidden invention, Meg must stop it - or risk the entire future of the Amusementists.

This is the second book in the Secret Order series. The third (and final) book titled Shadow of the War Machine is already out. I adored this book. This was a wonderful YA steampunk novel that I absolutely devoured. There are lots of wonderful steampunk devices, some mystery, and some great action; even a little romance.

After the events in the first book someone is out to kill Meg. She is trying to make the most of life running the toy shop left to her and stealing moments with Will when she can. Then suddenly she gets a chance to follow her dreams; she is offered an apprenticeship as an Amusementist with the Secret Order. However things are not easy for Meg. As the first woman Amusementist apprentice ever she has a hard road to follow. Things only get more difficult when Will decides to take a position with the Foundry in Scotland, not to mention someone is still trying to kill Meg.

I really really enjoyed this book even more than the first in the series. I loved how determined Meg is to work in a technical field and prove herself no matter what the challenges. She was so engaging and easy to relate to and my heart just broke for her as she struggled through day to day life; trying to remember that the knowledge she was gaining was worth all the taunting and sabotage from her fellow male students.

I loved watching Meg learn about all these nifty steampunk elements and make some of her own. I also love the relationship she and Will have. They both recognize that they need to become people on their own before than can be together. I loved that they stick to what they need to feel complete, but still remain steadfast and respectful of each other. It was very sweet and a good example of a healthy YA relationship.

This book did a great job tying up one major plot point while also making progress in the larger story. There is a lot of action and excitement in here woven into all the steampunky goodness.

Overall I really loved this book. I loved the story and the characters and all of the wonderful steampunk devices. I love Meg as a character and her steadfastness to learn and broaden her knowledge no matter what the hurdles. I also love that her and Will have a loving and responsible relationship together. I would definitely recommend this whole series to those who enjoy steampunk reads.

If you are looking for an excellent YA steampunk read I would also recommend Gail Carriger’s books, The Baskerville Affair series by Emma Jane Holloway, The Treasure Chronicles by Elizabeth Jordan, the Clockwork Dagger Duology by Beth Cato and the Stoker and Holmes series by Colleen Gleason.

Going into Rise of the Arcane Fire, I had low expectations. The previous book in this series, The Legacy of the Clockwork Key, while enjoyable, had some serious flaws. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Rise of the Arcane fire is an excellent novel that takes everything that worked about its predecessor and adds to it. It is a rare sequel that surpasses its predecessor in every way. The story picks up a few months after the end of the first book. Meg is living in London in a toy shop she owns. She is haunted by the revelations that her parents were murdered and that her grandfather is alive. As the Amusmentists, the secret society of inventors that her family has been apart of for generations, convenes in London, Meg is determined to join their ranks in order to uncover the identity of her parent's murderer and find her grandfather. After facing resistance to her entry, she is taken on as the first female apprentice in the history of the Amusmentists. However, as Will, her love interest, departs for Scotland, Meg is left alone with no one to trust. As Meg trains to become a full member, she must race to discover who is sabotaging various inventions before someone it's too late. The plot of this book is much more engaging than the previous one's. Where the first book would often go through lulls in the story, this book keeps the reader hooked with a mystery that thickens with every turn of the page. While this book unfortunately sidelines much of the first book's supporting cast, it makes up for it with two much stronger main characters. Meg, who was mostly a blank slate in the first book, is so much better here. We see her prove her intelligence while struggling with everyday sexism. The reader learns about her determination and ingenuity. Additionally, the romance aspect of the story is much better I this book. Where it was a nuisance previously, it feels integral to Meg and Will's character arcs in a way it did not before. Despite all the major improvements, this book has one big problem. While the story is engaging, it cannot help but feel like a filler episode of a TV show. By the end of the book, the mystery over the saboteur has been solved, but Meg is still in training, she still does not know the identity of her parent's murderer, and she still does not know where her grandfather is. She does not even make much progress at all on the last two things. However, Rise of the Arcane fire overcomes this flaw with a more engaging story, stronger leads, and vastly improved romance. Fans of historical fiction and anyone who read and enjoyed The Legacy of the Clockwork Key will absolutely Rise of the Arcane Fire.

I didn't enjoy the first book very much, but although this one had some problems, it was much better. I'd give it a solid 3 1/2 stars for that.

Meg was a bit better in this book. Her paranoia annoyed me a bit, but she was a lot more likable. She also actually had some skills in this book, although I think they should have been hinted at earlier. I think I liked her better because she was apart from Will and able to stand on her own. Will continued to not be very useful and complain about his own unworthiness.

This plot was much less predictable as well. (Although evil headmaster? Totally called it.) The Academy was interesting, and getting a deeper look at the machines was fun. I liked a lot of the new characters too. One other thing. What's with the title? It had nothing to do with the book. It's a picky thing, but a title shouldn't be misleading.

So if you didn't like the first book, give this one a try. You may like it better.

Rise of the Arcane Fire is all about how inferior men feel in the presence of just one intelligent woman, and the lengths they go to to keep her under their collective thumb.

Okay, that may not be the plot, but that's definitely the overarching theme. Meg has been initiated as an apprentice to the Secret Order of Amusementists, the first woman to achieve the position. Therefore, she is forced to endure verbal abuse from both the old, white (it is Victorian England) men and the young, white men who are her fellow students. And, her one supposed ally, Will, decides to forgo an apprenticeship and return to Scotland, clearly expecting Meg to give up on her dream and follow him.

Of course, being that the book is set in Victorian England, these incidences aren't uncommon. Whatever word means "more often than common," they're that.

I've enjoyed this series, so far. It's not terribly complicated or thought provoking, just fun. This one had the typical love triangle of young adult fiction. However, I made it through without nausea, so I guess it was ok.
Not terribly happy with plot progression in this one. For being over 400 pages the story arc really didn't move at all. Essentially the reader is left at the same plot point as the first book.
I do like who Meg is becoming. She isn't the most annoying YA herione, but has the typical annoying teen qualities ('Am I good enough? Why does everyone hate me? I love him, but I love him too.')
I read a lot of YA because I know it's clean, I don't have to worry about explicits. So although I complain about the predictable love triangles, easily concieved stories, and lack of intricacies- I'll continue reading (and enjoying) YA fiction. This book is no exception.😉👍

This book is good.

It is really a hard push to women are better than men
And stronger. Also that men are dumb. personally that is not my view on the world. Because men were created to be able to run a household and be the decision maker.

But the story was amazing with a slight romance that is so setting on edge.

This book is so good and has so many great writing examples. This is the second book of Legacy of the Clockwork Key. The cover of this book is so cool and the plot of great. This book still follows the adventures of Meg and Will. I would definitely recommend this book to you!

Even better than the first book! Rise of the Arcane Fire was absolutely amazing, full of thrills, mystery, secrets, surprises, betrayal and, of course, romance. I had high expectations for this book and, it not only met them, but exceeded them all. Just brilliant!

Meg becomes a much stronger character in this book. In book 1, we see her begin to find her strength, but, in this book, she claims it all. She went against the gender barrier in the Society, even though she had to endure taunts and harassment. And, she proved to them all that she was just as clever and capable as any amusementist. And, in her spare time, she took down a saboteur. Can I just say that she's a beast? I really liked her in book 1 and I liked her even more in this book.

Will was, unfortunately, absent for most of the book. Rather than training to become an amusementist, he decided to go to Scotland to join the Foundry. But, don't worry, he still plays a prominent role in the book and we get our fix of super hot Scottish inventor. He was wonderful in book 1 and he's even more wonderful in this book. He came into his element more, since he found his place in the Foundry, where he could do the work he loved. And, like Meg, he proved his strength, cleverness, and worth as a character. Not to mention how sweet he could be, even with the green eyed monster paying a visit because of David (more on him later). He was sweet and wonderful and I adored him.

The romance, despite the separation, was still a big part of the book. It was absolutely lovely. Meg and Will are just so sweet together. And, considering how clever and capable they both are, they definitely met their match in each other. They were wonderful together and I can't wait to see how things go for them in the next book.

David.
He was an interesting character. At first, he was pompous, annoying, and basically Meg's arch-nemesis in the academy. I have to admit, I wanted to punch him a few times.
But, later on, he changed. For one, he proved that his worth as an amusementist wasn't just because of his family name. He was truly clever and a worthy character.
Then, he changed more.
He started to get sweet on Meg. And, it was all the more significant, considering their connection from their childhood and the "almost was" relationship (which was a huge surprise and, no, I won't explain any further. I'll just let you stew on that as I laugh evilly).
Not to worry, this doesn't become a love triangle. Meg is still very much in love with Will, though Will'l insecurity peeked up, since he worried that he couldn't compete with a lord. But, David was very sweet and adorable and, by the end, I totally had a crush on him. We'll see what happens with his character in the next book.

The plot was fast paced and I was hooked the entire way through. There were enough thrills to keep me on the edge of my seat. The mystery of who was sabotaging the academy was brilliantly done. I never suspected who it turned out to be. The reveal of who was behind it, and why, was quite a shock. We get a few more teasers into the truth behind the death of Meg's parents. The hints were surprising and they definitely changed the game, especially the one near the end. Now, I'm even more curious to find out the truth and I'm dying to get my hands on the next book. I really enjoyed the story and I adored the ending. I can't wait to read more from this series, because it's turning out to be amazing.

Rise of the Arcane Fire was a brilliant YA steampunk romance. I adored every bit of it! There were thrills, secrets, surprises, mystery, and romance. It was all perfect. Fans of the first book, you won't be disappointed. And, for those who haven't started the series, if you want an amazing YA read, this series is one you don't want to miss.

(View this review on My Library in the Making.)

I'm not usually one to read synopsis for sequels, so I started reading Rise of the Arcane Fire with little to no idea as to what could happen. And it sure surprised me.

After finding out the truth about her family and the secret society they'd been involved in, Meg has settled in to a simple life in the toy store, tinkering about and studying her best friend's deceased husband's notes on Amusements. She knows the danger isn't over, and that proves true when the attempts on her life start once again. But when given the chance to run away from it all with Will, she chooses to stand her ground and get to the bottom of it, all whilst proving herself worthy of her place among the traditional-to-a-fault Amusementists.

Even though it put a chink in their relationship, I liked how both Meg and Will were ambitious and wanted to make something of themselves. They knew love alone wasn't enough, so they each set out to fulfill their dreams. And so because Meg didn't have Will to back her up this time, she had to learn to stand up on her own against her enemies, namely the judgmental male members of the Order,
"I bet the only pi she knows is in the kitchen!"

I took a step forward with my head held high. Righteous fury burned through me, and I did my best to imitate the daunting presence of the queen herself. In a sweet voice I said, "You're right, I do keep pies in the kitchen." The laughter died down as everyone looked to me. "Exactly three and one, four, one, five, nine, two, six, five, three, two, four, nine seven, one..." His eyes widened, and I knew I had him.

and the insipid female members of Society,
"Oh, you think you are so clever. You should be careful, dear. Men don't enjoy the company of plain women with keen minds." Now her entire face had taken on a crumpled look, and her forced smile reminded me of a growling dog.

Plain. Honestly. She'd have to do better than that. As if she were some great beauty. "If that is true, and men do in fact prefer the company of frivolous women with dull minds, you should have no shortage of suitors." I shrugged and went back to my figures.

Yeah, I think she did well.

In this sequel, we learn more about the inner workings of the Order, and I certainly didn't expect it to be so complex and widespread. And then there is also the matter of David, Earl of Strompton, top one in Meg's class of apprentices, and now the third side to a love triangle. But no, please, don't run away screaming from this series if you hate those, because I assure you that this is one of the rare few triangles that work. It didn't distract from the plot, instead it pulled me in even more during the rare stagnant moments.

Although this sequel truly surpassed the first book in just about every aspect, I feel like it lacked something. But still, Rise of the Arcane Fire is a thrilling adventure that had me glued to my seat. I loved all the new characters and seeing the growth in all the old ones, especially how Meg learned that someone's last name shouldn't be taken against them. I have a few theories as to what could go wrong next, and, man, that list is long, so I sure am looking forward to the third book!

MY FAVORITE PART was Meg finally forming friendships with her fellow apprentices. I loved how they bantered and had each other's backs.

'Rise of the Arcane Fire' is the second book in a young adult fantasy/steampunk trilogy that continues to follow our leading lady, Margaret "Meg" Whitlock as she desperately tries to discover what happened to her grandfather and the rest of her family. After addressing the entire Order and becoming determined to be the first woman allowed into the Order, Meg finds herself in another dangerous situation - the academy is being sabatoged and things are about to turn deadly. With her friends Lucinda and Oliver planning their wedding and Will away in Scotland, Meg doesn't know who she can trust. She must rely on her own intelligence and intuition to figure out who is behind the attacks as well as stopping one of the worst inventions ever created - one that would end the Order itself for good.

Although this was the second book in the trilogy, the novel continued to surprise and fascinate me. There are tons of steampunk aspects to the story, which I found to be incredibly whimsical and enchanting. I haven't read much steampunk fiction, so I really loved being drawn even further into the magical world the author created. The characters continued to be interesting and they each definitely had their own personalities. Meg is still a fantastic main character. She's witty, smart, determined, and loyal to those she cares for - she also has an independent streak that isn't really accepted during her time. She has her flaws like all of us - but I think it makes her all the more realistic and easy to identify with. Her pain and guilt over her parent's death continues to dictate her life - she can't seem to escape it. Once again, she finds herself at the center of a deadly mystery - her very destiny - and she doesn't think twice about what she must do. She experiences great character growth in the book and I hope that it continues into the next one too. Will is a great love interest, even though he can seem a bit cliched at times. He's definitely much better than in the first book when he was aloof and detached. This time around he openly shows his love for Meg and his loyalty and devotion are obvious. He's a strong character who takes on a lot to protect those he cares about, primarily Meg, and it doesn't hurt that he's a complete hottie. The plot itself is another fabulous mystery full of unexpected twists and turns that I enjoyed trying to figure out along with the characters. I absolutely LOVED reading about the different inventions and amusements in this book - just like the first - along with reading about the history of the order. I hope we get to see more of this world in the next installment too. It adds a unique aspect to the story, which I feel gave it added depth and interest. The writing was great with a natural flow that sucked me right in from the first paragraph. I liked the pace of the book - not too fast and not too slow as to be boring. Overall, this was a phenomenal second book of an enchanting and captivating trilogy. The only issue I have is now having to wait for the next book to come out! Very highly recommended!

Rise of the Arcane Fire was an amazing sequel to Legacy of the Clockwork Key. Action-packed and fast-paced, this book will leave you breathless. Part of me was worried that I wouldn't like this novel as much as I did the previous book, especially because I had no idea where the story was going to go. However, Ms. Bailey did not fail in delivering an exciting and intriguing story that is bound to impress any reader that is a fan of the series.

The story picks up with Meg running the toy shop, and still wanting to be apart of the Amusementists. Craziness and nonstop action ensue. Almost immediately out of the gate, Meg is threatened by a bomb. While this one is longer than the previous novel, it flies by, and I honestly wish it was longer just so I wouldn't be done with Meg's story already. Meg is an amazing lead character. She fights with all that she has, and stays strong, even in the face of danger. She doesn't back down from a challenge, and will do anything to protect those she loves. I greatly enjoyed Meg's time at the Academy. There are many new characters introduced in this story, all men, and let me tell you, they are awful and despicable, and I couldn't stand a single one of them. However, that's exactly how Ms. Bailey intended it! So don't worry, this isn't a bad thing. I started off liking Peter, but after something happens and he turns his back on her, I couldn't bring myself to like him again, even when he "makes up" with her. Oliver and Will were definitely the bright spots in regards to the men in this story. Will shall always have my heart, and while there isn't really a love triangle, I can see the potential for one. And let me tell you, it is no competition in who Meg will pick. She belongs with Will, and I hope it doesn't turn out any other way.

With just the right amount of steampunk, Ms. Bailey has crafted a unique and wonderful story that is one of my favorite steampunk series. This novel is full of sabotage and intrigue, and try as you might to figure out who is behind everything, you'll be surprised in the end. I still have some questions, and I hope that they are answered in the next in the series. Ms. Bailey has an amazing imagination to come up with all of the machines that are created, and even more so for the entire world that she has built. Her writing is flawless, and this could easily be read by any age group. I can't wait to see what Ms. Bailey comes up with next! I highly recommend checking this book out, you won't be disappointed. Happy reading :)

My Thoughts

Oh How Far We've Come!

Leaving readers just enough time to gasp for breath and strap themselves in for yet another mile-a-minute, nonstop action, steam punk laden thrill ride.
Authoress, Kristin Bailey, ushers readers back into the secretive, imaginative, and often deadly world that is The Order of the Amusementists.

It seems that having survived a treasure trove of transforming mechanics that would have put the Transformers to shame, avoiding murder at hands of a rouge Order member, destroying a machine that could reweave the fabric of time, and finding love; just wasn't enough for Meg Witlock.
Nope...She and the dashing Will are together again, and it appears that things are just as dire for them in book 2.
That's right folks!
The opening chapters find Meg and Will's happy reunion soured by a bomb. Nothing says "I love you to death." better than the old 'use your body as a shield to save your sweetheart from the exploding shrapnel trick'.
To make matters worse, or better for those who just can't get enough juice plot lines.
When Meg appears before The Order in the hopes of finding out who wants her dead this time; it is she who manages to create quite the sensation.
This is the only hint that this reviewer is allowing to slip.

For the rest of this most harrowing adventure; you will just have to avail yourself to this reading of this wonderful book.

Let The Book Love Begin

What could possibly be better than Legacy of the Clockwork Key? Why...Rise of the Arcane Fire, of course!

Meg and Will are older and wiser, and as such their adventures more complex; but that in no way n diminishes the wonder and whimsy that served as a hallmark of the first book. It would seem that Kristin Bailey's Secret Order, is also a series which builds upon itself. There is no slowing of action or weakening in plot from book 1 to book 2. There is also no repeat of action, scene, or plot line from book 1 to 2, making the continuation a wholly new and delightful creature unto itself.

Meg and Will evolve as people so much within the course of this story. It is wonderful to experience said evolution as a part of the whole, rather than a distraction from it.
The action and inventions have gotten more complex this time round, and the deeds far more dastardly!
This flight of fantasy is one that you won't want to return from.

I love this series and I was so excited to see all these characters that I know and love, along with the new ones, go on these amazing adventures! BUT... there where some things that bothered me this time around. Examples would be Megs constant eloquent declarations of love for Will in her head and then when it came to to say them she wouldn't speak; I really hated that. Then there was this clockwork villain who I thought was going to be a huge reveal but we saw him for two seconds and his character seemed to bore me, even if his face was creepy beyond all reason.
I found David's Uncle to be a treat in these books! I only wish they had introduced him sooner. All of Meg's struggles as the only girl in the Amusmentist were very interesting and maddening sense I also am a girl and when she was being bullied because of it I wanted to crawl through the pages, come out the other side into the story and smack Samuel in the face! Sadly, I remained on my couch reading.
Also Will, who I think is my favorite character, seemed to be pushed to more of a side character role. He was out of the loop the entire time and it drove me crazy! Anyways, towards the end after... let's call it the catapult incident, I felt like after that chapter ended we jumped two a few weeks later without an explanation to anything else. Was a chunk of my book missing? I know it wasn't but it still upsetted me a little bit. And once, I tried to ignore it I found out I was reading the end of book 2! It didn't end as wonderfully as book 1. I felt so reassured without having to convince myself of it at the end of book 1. I felt Meg and Will convinced me well enough. But this time there are to many un-answered questions hanging in the air.
There are so many things that should happen that probably won't and even with that quick and cute ending I still felt the questions burning in the back of my mind. All in all I gave Rise of Archane Fire, 4 out of 5 stars. The masterful story telling was as grand as always and most of the characters were delightful to read about. But there were a few things that brought it down a star for me. I am really looking forward to the last book in the series though! It's time for answers and for Will to be around a lot more!!!

Spoilers ahead. Most of my notes aren't super spoilery, but I still mention details that may be considered spoilers. You have been warned.

Overall, not bad. I enjoyed Rise of the Arcane Fire, and the descriptions of the various amusements were awesome, and the book reminded me of some of the Tamora Pierce books I used to read (Protector of the Small?), only with a steampunk variation.

Amazing follow-up to Legacy of the Clockwork Key! From the very beginning it's full of non-stop action and intrigue!

I held off on reading this for awhile because I was worried that I wouldn't like it as much as the first book, but I'm happy to say I was wrong and I might have liked this one even more. I think this one was longer, but it flew by as we followed Meg on her journey into the world of the Amusementists. As she is the only female to ever be added to the academy as an apprentice, she had to deal with a lot in this book including chauvinistic views from several of her fellow apprentices and teachers. Needless to say the men in this book are awful (except Will and Oliver!) and only a few redeem themselves at the end as Meg proves that a girl can do everything a guy can, sometimes even better.

Within the first few chapters Meg and Will are already facing down death by a bomb and declaring their undying love to each other when they think they aren't going to make it. It's very tense from the beginning and the tension only rises as Meg immerses herself in the academy and puts her life in more danger. There is also enough romance to keep you interested and the new addition of David, with whom Meg was almost betrothed to at birth, as a possible love interest (come on it's not going to happen. Will is too awesome and Scottish!) adds a bit of conflict that makes you really appreciate the deep love Meg holds for Will. Their other relationship challenge is distance, which was heart breaking when it happened early on, but it also helped Meg's character become more independent and really become more confident in her abilities as an amusementist.

This is definitely my favorite young adult steampunk series and I cannot wait to see what new machines and creations Bailey comes up with in the next book.

Sidenote: Does not end in a cliffhanger!

I absolutely adored Rise of the Arcane Fire. I enjoyed the first book, Legacy of the Clockwork Key , but I loved this more than the first one. Rise of the Arcane Fire picked up the pace and excitement.

I am a huge fan of action, and Bailey did not disappoint in the action department. As soon as one problem settles down, another appears. There is never a boring lull. Bailey also reveals some interesting information about the Order and Meg’s family (no spoilers here!) that really enhanced my understanding and interest.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate Meg. She is so strong. I love her wit and her courage. Meg never hesitates to speak her mind or counter what her opponents say. I feel like Meg really bloomed in this sequel. However, she is not perfect. Readers see her internal struggle with fear and confusion, which adds depth to her character.

The only thing I did not like about this book was the introduction of a love triangle. Due to this, Meg was somewhat frustrating in her indecision. This is especially a problem for me because I love Will’s character. He struggles with his feelings of inadequacy, but works to overcome them, and does everything he can to be an honorable, independent person. This love triangle is difficult for him because he already feels like he’s not enough, and that just breaks my heart.

As you can tell, I have strong feelings about this book. If you haven’t read Legacy of the Clockwork Key already, I highly recommend it and Rise of the Arcane Fire.

I have to admit, I was a little disappointed by this. The blurb and the first chapter made it sound like it was going to be all about Meg trying to find her grandfather. But no. Instead, we got only passing mentions of her grandfather and an overwhelming amount of Pointless Love Triangle. Sigh.

Look, I really liked the idea of there being an Amusementist training centre, and the idea of Will finding his own way in the world. But Meg being effectively the only female character for the vast majority of the book (other female characters merely drop in to offer bitchiness or advice as appropriate) grated. And why, for the love of all things holy, did we have to have a love triangle??? And a completely superfluous love triangle at that?! David's a massive jerkface through most of the book and we're suddenly supposed to believe that Meg's just going to swoon in his arms because he can WALTZ?? Uh, no.

I honestly can't decide at this point if I'll keep reading when the next book comes out. Because it's a fun world and I love all the Amusements that they create. But there was so much Meg-goes-to-school-and-is-bullied-for-being-a-girl-then-gets-attacked-then-goes-to-school-then-gets-bullied-then-gets-attacked on an endless loop in this book that I'm not sure I can handle any more... Plus, LOVE TRIANGLE. Ugh.

I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. Thank you Itching for Books and Kristin Bailey for this great opportunity.

First, let me say that this is the second book and you need to read the first one too. I was anxious to read these books ever since I joined this tour. They are great, they are brilliantly written and with the story that will captivate you from the start. The author really did an amazing job with the books. I can honestly say, that I liked even more the second book, because of how Meg’s Whitlock story continued.

So, to get to the point...Meg is our main character. In this book she will show you how a fighter looks and acts. She fought for her powers, she endured a lot of harassment and even destroyed the gender barrier in the Society that formed. That’s how a fighter looks like. She proved she is capable of anything and she is one strong girl. But, the real reason Meg fought so bad is to prove she is a real amusementist.

I really can’t say enough great things about this book. I loved how the characters turned, especially Meg. The author really did a magnificent job. In the end, I just want to say I highly recommend this book!

I like this book a lot, subjectively...probably more than I like most 4-star books...so why did I give it 3 stars?

A (Sort-of spoilery, I guess): I'm still not sure how I feel about the psuedo-love triangle of David/Meg/Will. I definitely am understanding of the pull of Meg's feelings - sixteen years old, her first and only-ever boyfriend is away and they parted on rocky terms....and the most popular boy in school (despite being kind of an arrogant ass - not overwhelmingly, but enough) shows her attention. I totally get it, and it felt realistic, the way she assessed how she felt about David compared to how she felt about Will. I'm just not sure how necessary it was...

B: Despite the gritty world of mid 1800s London and the dark tone of the story in general, I didn't ever feel completely immersed in that - the fear and panic that has Meg so preoccupied. Like there was a fluffiness underneath it all, that it would all work out in the end.

C: I was disappointed that Lucinda appeared basically for exposition and nothing more. I love the friendship between her and Meg that developed in the first book and it was sad to see it fade into the background in this book.

While I prefer the first book in the Secret Order series to this particular one, however I still managed to really enjoy this sequel and what it has to offer - that is, for all its little adventures, intrigue, danger, and, of course, the smallest of romances.

The thing I always liked about the author's writing is that it's a very easy book to read and has a wonderful pace going for it as well, and like in the first book, this sequel was one I flew through and I enjoyed every moment of it, even if the romance was bugging me just a little. But by the time you get to the end, I think all readers of this series will definitely be looking forward to reading more from this author and finding out more about her characters, so I'm definitely looking forward to that.

Overall, 'Rise of the Arcane Fire' may not have been the better book compared to the first one, however it was a delightful little read.

3.5 stars!

The pros - suspenseful, great world-building, fascinating premise.

The cons - the romance. In the first book the romance felt heavy handed, and a bit in-your-face at times (and why is it when it comes to romance everything is about the physical? People are more than the sum of their body parts, after all, and a body doesn't mean much if the personality isn't all that great). In this book I wish the romantic aspect hadn't been there at all. It fell into the age old trap of must-do-everything-possible-to-keep-romance-interesting and in turn created a situation that was less interesting and a lot annoying. There were several moments in which I wanted to smack the character upside the head and tell them to grow up.

It also just... felt like it was there just for the sake of being there. and had it not been there the story wouldn't have suffered for it, at all.

Still, overall, it was an enjoyable read, and the romance aside I actually enjoyed it more than the first book.

Do not try to read this unless you have recently read the first one.

Teenagers are stupid. Meg's pride is annoying.

In this one, Meg is nominated to join the Academy, a school for apprentice Amusmentists. They learn all about math, physics etc and are given challenges, not unlike the MIT engineering challenges that are broadcast on NOVA. (at least they used to be, I'm not sure if they still are) But alas! Another madman is afoot trying to sabotage. Who is he (or she) after? Meg? The Academy? SOMA at large? or something else all together?

There is also the possible development of a love triangle. Will loves Meg. Meg loves will. But someone else loves Meg too. And Meg, well she isn't sure how she feels.

The villain is really pretty easy to spot. Still it is a fun read. Wide spacing makes it go much faster than 450 pages would usually indicate.

Dreamer's review***

The cover is the hook for me, I love a pretty or an exciting cover.
Then you easy or hit with first paragraph to bring it home, and that's what this story did for me.
I call it lost in fantasy***
Once you read this amazing book you will ask yourself why haven't I read it before now?
Filled with mystery, secret, and betrayal with a touch of romance, once you start reading you will not put it down. Meg is one of my favorite characters in this whole book, you will watch her grow stronger as the story unfolds. I recommend that you read book one to get a better feel for this one. This is a fast pace story and will keep you on the edge of your seat.
A really great read****

Another delightful steampunk reading!!! Meg is a heroine, but more "human" than the usual females leads of the stories. She is brave, she fights for her rights, for her life and for those she cares, but she also suffer! She had to deal with prejudice, with mysterious attacks against her life and suffer with the challenge about her love life. She isn't a badass, she cries, she feels alone, but because of all that, she learns to stand up and be strong! Besides all that, i also think the whole story is very creative and very intriguing! It's full of adventures and awesome steampunk elements!!! A very nice sequel! Can't wait to read more about Meg's quests!
