Fans of European, especially French, comics are in for a treat with "Space Relic Hunters". The novel follows a mismatched group of rogue archeologists as they defy the will of the "gods" to uncover lost artifacts from suppressed galactic religions. The ensuing quest rapidly develops into a fast paced and imaginative Space Opera romp with plenty of action, intrigue and mystery. Visually the book is also striking as it hits notes similar to "Farscape", "Valerian" and "The Fifth Element". This book is recommended for Sci Fi fans who appreciate quirky characters and like a little bit of wit and whimsy in their stories

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, Oni Press, for providing me with a DRC in exchange for my honest review.

A very French Space Opera Graphic Novel, taking place in a non-specific future where there are Gods banning other religions trying to take over the Universe. But all that is background to our core of Xia, hard-drinking Relic Hunter (here, as in the TV series of the same name, it is a synonym for Tob Raider, which is a synonym for Lara Croft - meets Han Solo as the bumf promises), and Little Mercure, her partner, a masked alien who almost certainly will have something to do with the eventual story. Given a job to collect a relic from the belly of the beast, the planet with all the new Gods on it, they team up with straight-laced Vitellius, ex-divine centurion, who you will imagine has a combative relationship with Xia. It is all very formulaic, and doesn't feel unlike something Moebius might have drawn forty years ago (and mononymic artist Grun certainly follows the French comic rule of sexy heroine, along with a hero who always seems to be smoking an invisible Gitane). That said, there is something in playing the classics straight, and Space Relic Hunters, which is as basic as its title suggests, does indeed do that, In many ways, the fact it gets through its plot in just 100 pages, rather than the kind of meandering this story would have taken if it were originally serialised, is admirable. Hard to recommend it if you want something original, but if you want an 80's sci-fi comic buzz, it does fire those neurons with some style.

V galaxii vládne len jedno uznané náboženstvo. Všetky ostatné boli rozmetané a zakázané.

After the galaxy was conquered by the four gods all other religions were wiped out and the gods' Legions ensure that they stay that way through force if necassary. What the gods did not consider was this would spawn people desperate to get their hands on relics from their old religions and Relic Hunters willing to risk their lives to get them for them, for the right price of course. Xia and Little Mercury are two such Relic Hunters, considered the best in the galaxy and thanks to that reputation they have been hired by the mysterious Sir Ouranos to find a relic with the help of ex-Legionnaire Vitellius to a religion no one has ever heard of to the tune of 90 million coin. An offer they can't refuse even if it all sounds just a little fishy.

For the most part this starts out exactly how I expected it to; mildly attractive drunk woman leads a partnership with a mysterious man who never shows his face but also happens to be way smarter than he should be, and the third wheel ex legionnaire who has a gambling problem. There's some mildly amusing banter between Xia and Vitellius that unfortunately gets pretty old pretty rapidly because all it is throughout the whole book is Xia making fun of the fact that Vitellius may or may not be a virgin. Little Mercury is of course the peacemaker. Sir Ouranos obviously has some sort of ulterior motives. So for a lot of this book I got exactly what I expected too. However, once we find out what those ulterior motives are it becomes a really unique story centered around a giant conspiracy. We still have the by now completely unwitting banner between two of our MCs but that takes backseat to this conspiracy because it's absolutely insane. I'm even giving a pass for it ending exactly how I figured it would be the twist is totally worth it!

The art in this is absolutely amazing though and that's what really kept my attention even when I wanted to tell Xia to just shut up. The alien races are all distinct but very human like and the landscapes are absolutely spectacular. I think the only thing I found a little weird is one of the races looks a lot like the Grand Councilwoman from Lilo and Stitch and so that kinda threw me, but more because I was like "OMG WHERE HAVE I SEEN THIS CHARACTER BEFORE!?" for the latter half of the book.

I am going to that the star rating is a 3.5 rounded to 4 (on GR at least) because I swear if Xia mentioned virginity again, I would scream. But other than that I had a lot of fun with this. It's not my normal reading so it surprised me how much I did like it!

As always thanks to NetGalley and Oni Press for the eArc!

Space Relic Hunters seemed like an very interesting scifi comic and you can never have enough of those. Our main characters are relic hunters and we are talking about religious relics of course. The galaxy has changed as the four gods banned all other religions and made it impossible to worship them. Their dictatorship was something else and so familiar in a way. But of course people and creatures of all sorts found their way to keep worshiping and this eventually created the market for the relics. The religious aspect was great and how everything happened when it's revealed. The world building is OK, but I would've liked to know more about the situation and the religions too. The group of relic hunters then don't seem to have enough persona to keep this story together though. The humor is lame and there's no real connection anywhere to be found sadly so.

The art looks nice though and the backgrounds are beautiful. The color world is great too, so the comic looks great by all means. The only downfall is the characters. But, still, a nice space adventure!

Somewhere and when out there, four ‘true’ gods rule the universe with iron fists. They’ve eradicated all other religions, but those aren’t forgotten, which makes hunting for religious relics throughout space a lucrative business—and occasionally dangerous.

Relic hunter duo, Xia and Little Mercur, get a job offer too good to pass. It gains them the full attention of gods and their legion, and leads them to learn the origin of the gods. Things don’t go entirely smoothly.

This was a good, boosy, and deadly romp through space. Ending isn’t a cliffhanger, and it doesn’t promise more to come, but it’s not entirely conclusive either. I don’t need to read more though. Art is great and full colour, with concept art and sketches at the end.

A classic science fiction adventure featuring a rag-tag crew of relic hunters sent to “find” — a polite word for steal — an unknown relic hidden on a dangerous planet while being hunted by the Divine Legion at the behest of the immortal gods. It features alien races, giant bugs, space tyrants, heroic last stands, and ancient betrayals.

The highlight, for me, is the art. The muted, earth-toned palette with organic shapes really works. The world feels lived in and alive; greasy bars, old and dingy ruins, lush and tropical worlds, cold and sterile ships … it reminds me of the original Star Wars trilogy in places, though the story has more Indian Jones flair to it.

It’s fast, it’s fun, and it’s well worth the read! Thank you so much to Net Galley and the publisher for the ARC.

The cover is the best artwork of the book. Everything else is overly full to the point of distraction. The story is average at best and the details of the art begin to grate. Why do all the men wear long coats while the women pose with their naked-looking butts to the reader? Why can the artist not draw butts that look normal in pants? Why does every emotion register as an o-face and every sitting pose look like it was blocked in a porno? Why is the man centred on the cover when the woman is the main character and why is she drawn to look like an angry blow-up doll?

If free story were unique or well-written I td maybe get part the annoying and distracting artwork, but alas it was nothing particularly new and the dialogue was lacking life.

Space Relic Hunters is set in a far off future, 200 years after an apocalyptic religious war wiped out all but one religion in the entire galaxy.

The new religion is founded by 4 extra-dimensional gods who rule with an iron fist and brook no competition from other faiths.

In this sci-fi universe, relics from the expired faiths have value and are collected and sold by space-faring Indiana Jones/Lara Croft types.

It's all in translation, so the writing comes across as wooden, the art though is fantastic with shades of Möbius influence on every page.

The ending is... well... insufficient. Not as bad as the nihilistic ending of "_On Mars" from the same creators. But it feels like the first part of a trilogy with no word on if there will be more.

This is not my normal kind of read, but after looking at the cover and the description, I knew I wanted to try it.

The artwork was amazing and the story was good. Some of the insults got a bit repetitive and annoying, but it was easy enough to skim over those parts. All three of the main characters were interesting enough and the twist reveal was not quite what I was expecting. Some of it was, but not all of it.

3.5 stars.. maybe 3.75 cos of the artwork.

I recieved an ARC of this book thanks to NetGalley and Oni Press. I am leaving an honest and voluntary review.

This story brings in a lot of classic science-fiction and treasure hunter vibes, mixed with a fun and gritty art style. Its a great story for people who like those elements. That said, I found this book to be fine. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't memorable.

Choć ładnie i zgrabnie narysowana, to niestety z tej awanturniczej opowieści SF, wieje nudą, a klisza pogania klisze. Strona graficzna nieco osładza dobrnięcie do końca tej opowieści.

A pretty good space opera about 3 relic hunters and an oppressive religious government that is chasing them across the galaxy. Brun's art is exquisite. It's so, so detailed. It's only 100 pages with the rest filled out with preliminary art.

It was a fully fleshed out world, but a weird one. I see now that I’m marking it as read I read a translation so any quirk of dialogue is forgivable. Tons of potential and if more is translated to English I’d read it.

The art work of this space fantasy comic reminds me very of Star Wars. Which is why I picked it up.

The story reminded me of many books and films of this genre. The characters I suppose are space pirate relic hunters. We have Xia - space ship owner and relic hunter, whose continuous alcohol drinking at the hen made me wonder how she gets anything done. But doesn’t stop her in any way. Mercur - her, masked ship mate relic hunter who has surprises to reveal, who punches above his diminutive size. And Vitellius - who has a past that’s going to bite big time.

Guess what they hunt relics, with a story setting of being chased in their endeavours to obtain, read steak, the relics, by those aliens who think they shouldn’t be doing it.
