Dans les pas des dieux grecs

Rate this book

I read this book while we were visiting Greece and I can say that it was the ideal companion to the discovery of the Hellenic sanctuaries. Pierre Lévêque's descriptions of the sites are both precise and lyrical and they were our key to the understanding and reverence of the monuments we contemplated.

Only one regret though: I would have liked, sometimes, even more precise and thorough descriptions/ explanations of the sanctuaries. It left me somewhat frustrated not to understand everything about Mycenae, Delphi or Eleusis. But this is a harsh critic since you can't possibly do that in a single book. To say it in other words, this book, along with us visiting the sites it describes, made us want to know more about them, which is another compliment for this book.

One last critic: sometimes Pierre Lévêque's bibliography is not very up-to-date and his theories about the sites don't reflect the most recent researches.
