The mute elven archer known only as Killer. Azyrin, a half Winter-orc shaman and his human swordswoman bride, Makha. Drake, the charming, swashbuckling rogue. The fireball-slinging pixie-goblin, Rahiel, and her mini-unicorn, Bill. These are the Gryphonpike Companions.
A magical scabbard and a hundred year old story send the companions down into the caverns beneath the Barrowlands. Surviving the caverns and finding the legendary rapier will test Killer's friendship with the roguish Drake. Far more than half-truths and forgotten stories lurk in the dark beneath their feet.

Review is written on my phone, so please pardon any weird mistakes.
This story got bumped up by half a star compared to the other two because it was more character driven, focusing more on the relationships and such than fighting. Sure, there were some interesting encounters, but it didn't feel quite as "heavy" in this book.
Still well written and enjoyable, even if I feel like Bellet was strongly inspired by The Princess Bride at points ;)
Extremely short story but a lot of fun as usual. Fun cast good writing and interesting tale. I like this group of characters and would like to read and a full novel about them. .
I don't know if Annie Bellet even still writes about them. I hope so because their tales are enjoys le.

I started to write "too short for 5*, but realized it isn't the length that deprives these stories so far of that last accolade, it's the lack of emotional depth. For me, a 5* story has a poignant sting to it, an emotional resonance that rings deep in heart and soul, and leaves me thinking and wondering long after I've closed its pages. The Gryphonpike stories haven't offered me that experience yet. They're well-written and the characters have potential to go that deep--there have been flashes of raw emotion at times--but they haven't reached down far enough yet. I hope the author takes them there, though, as the story setup and its people certainly are able to evoke that little bit more meaning. I'll keep reading in hopes they do.
Short, fun read with interesting characters and tight scenarios for the novella. Writing is smooth, characterization is polished, some of the reviews mentioned a similarity to Dungeons and Dragons but since I've never had any exposure to that, wasn't an issue for me.
Overall, liked the writing, the story, the characters even though I tend to prefer longer and more developed stories, not much of a short story or novella reader, but this was on a free list. I see it is now priced at $2.99, as are additional novellas in the series and while that would work for me for a full-length book, it doesn't for a short novella that I can read in a couple of hours.
