In this charming homage to Dr Seuss, Sara and Paul are bored, but that soon changes when Sara gets some juice and finds a huge mouse sitting in the fridge.

Her name is Millie, and when Sara is surprised that she can talk, she says, “Of course I talk! I’m a talking pro! I’m not an ordinary mouse, you know.” She then announces that she is hungry, and decides to make a chicken pot pie. “Get me a bowl and the right ingredients, and in no time at all, I’ll be feeding us.”

And what goes into a chicken pot pie? Everything, apparently. “I’ll use whatever you have in the house. I’m a very, very unpredictable mouse.” So they collect everything they can find, and mix it all together, and then the adventure takes a strange twist, and Sara and Paul discover that Millie is even more talented than they thought she was.

Kirkus reviews says, “French’s charming tale has an exuberance and wit that should delight any child. The big, brassy, enthusiastic personality of Millie will jump off the page; some readers will take to Millie as a much beloved partner in crime when she urges the twins not to tell their mother about dinner since ‘she’ll spoil the fun.’ French’s simple but enchanting and expressive illustrations display the mischievous Millie in a variety of moods and poses. Lively and active, the drawings depict the entire story for children who can’t read, culminating in a humorous climax.

A delightful children’s tale with an engaging, larger-than-life lead character.”

Book received courtesy of author for a review

I was very excited that Freddi French chose to send me a copy of "Millie the Mouth". I love the cover; children will definitely be drawn to it. The story is cute. There's a mouse in the frig that no one knows about named Millie. Millie is a huge, hungry mouse that mixes lots of ingredients together to make a chicken pot pie. It reminded me a bit of "The Cat in the Hat".

The problem, for me, came with the rhythm and cadence of the rhyming. The words seemed to flow beautifully and then, all of the sudden, the rhythm broke down. I've read it several times and will continue to try to find out why exactly that happens.

We received a free copy of this book through First Reads. As soon as my kids opened the envelope, they begged me to read it! I was impressed with the quality of the book--hardcover! My 5 and 3 year old loved it! They thought parts of it were funny and even laughed out loud. They enjoyed the rhyming, although at times, I found the flow of it disrupted. For me, I enjoyed it because my kids enjoyed it, but I did find the story a little odd.

Cat in the Hat meets Mary Ann from True Blood (minus the evil demon-like thing part...).

In compliance with FTC guidelines; I received the book for free from the author in exchange for a honest review.

This book was a cute rhyming story for kids.

I read this story to my six year old daughter who immediately became enamoured with Millie. She asked me to read it over and over again. Every night at bed time she asked me to read to her about Millie and she even dreams about the giant mouse who makes chicken pot pie.

I thought the story was adorable and fun to read. I hope that Millie continues having adventures and that the children who get to read about her have their imaginations light up like my six year old daughter's did.

On a side note my daughter has been telling everyone she talks to how to make chicken pot pie. If you want to know what she knows just get this book and share it with a child.

I received this book for free from the author after I didn't win it through Goodreads First Reads. Thanks for sending me a copy and allowing me the opportunity to review this. Many comparisons are being made with Dr Seuss and The Cat in the Hat for good reason. This is a silly rhyming story with an improbable large talking animal and kids. Overall number of unique words was greater and perhaps caused a small issue. There were a couple of places the rhyming broke down a bit which is why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5, but even there it stayed in sync with the story. It's easier to rhyme with a lesser number of unique words. Not sure little ones will notice as much as adults. They will react to the silly "recipe" as it unfolds and the "solution" to the ensuing mess. Colorful images with enough white space so that young eyes should focus easily.

This review was written by an 8 year old:

I give this book 5 stars!

The story was nice and it was very interesting. It is a lot like a Dr. Seuss book, with rhymes. It was silly and a bit funny. The story reminded me a lot like Dr. Seuss' "Cat In The Hat". This book is awesome.

My review:

I would give this book 4 stars.

A fun and silly book that is easy for children to read and enjoy. It strongly reminded me of "Cat In The Hat", with a lot less rhymes. Interesting story to read along and enjoy with other children. I would like a little more illustrations to make things more fun but overall I enjoyed this short and quick read.

This is a really cute children's book. I won 5 books on Goodreads, this one included. This was the first to come. I entered to win this for my grand-kids, boy 2 and girl 3. They loved it! As soon as I opened the 3yr. old wanted it read. I had to read it twice and then she took over reading it to me. It is a cute story. The are work was very enjoyable for both the 2 and 3yd olds. I would so have bought this for my grand-kids, if I had not one it. I will buy for my niece and nephew. I would recommend this book anyone buying for kids ages 2 probably up to 9 or 10. Thank you to the author and the person who made gave this book in a giveaway. My grand-kids love it!!!!

I want to thank Freddi French for writing this wonderful book for children, also for sending me a copy so I could share it with my granddaughters. They loved it. I got to read it to them over the internet. We all enjoyed the story line of the book. Youngest girl said she was glad nanny's mice didn't make any messes like Millie made. Tay said the kids should have just fed Millie so she could have gotten on her way and she wouldn't have made such a mess on the carpet. Children can say the darnest things when your not expecting it. A must read for future grandchildren, tucking away on top shelf with my other favorites till then. Keep writing the books, I will be looking for them in the stores.

This is the simply delightful tale of a very hungry mouse named Millie the Mouth, whom is found hiding in the fridge by young Sara when she opens the door to get herself a drink.
Millie, it seems, is hungry for Chicken Pot Pie, and here the fun begins as they decide to make one.
Stir up a batch of giggles by sharing this story with pre-schoolers through age 7 or 8 and encourage them to let their imaginations run wild while they tell you what they would put into a pie for Millie. This book would also be excellent rainy day fun!

Two children are playing inside because it is too cold outside. When the sister goes to get something to drink from the refrigerator, she returns to ask her brother how long a mouse has been in the fridge. He's sure she's mistaken but goes to the fridge to find there is most definitely a very large mouse in there.

The story is written entirely in rhyme for an audience of young children. The story is okay and so are the illustrations, but not the best example of this genre.

The author is from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

We Loved this book. It reads a little like cat and the hat, but its way better. The children are playing and millie the mouse shows up and starts creating a dish to eat which than turns into a mess, which she in turn cleans up. It is a rhyming book, the children absolutly loved it! We read it twice the day we got it, and have just finished reading it again. This is definatly a must have book!

First off - I received this book as a courtesy from the author even though I had not won the contest which is pretty cool in and of itself. The book is nice and hardcover with color illustrations and easy to read text. I did enjoy the story and plan to pass it along to my niece for reading, too. The book reminded me of a playful and less-rhymy Cat in the Hat.

I received this book in the mail today and read it to my 5 year old daughter before bed and she loved it! she was really captivated by the story and really liked the illustrations of Millie and commented on her long tail and how large she was. She liked the rhyme style writing and it kept her attention through all 50+ pages. She said it's her new favorite bedtime story.

When it's too cold for twins Sara and Paul to go out and play, their boredom is quickly forgotten when a mouse "as big as a cat" is discovered in the fridge! In a rhyming adventure that just begs to be read aloud to children, the twins and Millie (the mouse) spend the day making messes while trying to cook up a special treat. This is sure to be a story that kids will want to read over and over.

My son LOVES this book. He likes to read this at night just to look at the pictures before bed. He has also started his own story for the pictures. The best book I have received from any giveaway. (My son is 4 years old and has a neurological delay so this book is the best gift for him).

Won this book from LibraryThing. Totally enjoyed the book. I was contemplating that the mouse was busy mixing all the food together because he was going to eat it all. The book has great pictures and children will really enjoy the book. I recommend this book.
