This is Romance (Fake Dating), and this is the first book in the Laws of Love series. I really loved this book so much. The characters was cute and fun to follow, and I always loves books that has characters that works in a book store. This is where two best friends of 5 years starts fake dating, and we all knows where that went to. Alice the main character was so great, and I really loved her character. This was a fun cute romance. This book was well-written. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Feathers and Stone Publishing) or author (Davina Stone) via Booksirens, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

Alice Montgomery's life seems to be stuck in the same place it has been for the past 5 years. Despite her hard earned English degree, Alice still works in her mothers book shop. She has also been secretly in love with the same man since uni. Her best friend Aaron.

Aaron Blake spends his life partying and going from relationship to relationship keeping to a strict 3 month limit. He wants to focus on his legal career and has no intention of settling down.

That is, until Aaron gets his dream job with a prestigious law firm. The firm values its family image and is looking for someone who fits with this. Aaron, feeling under pressure and in need of a fake girlfriend, tells them he has a girlfriend called Alice, thinking this will be a good, safe option.

Alice soon finds herself in a fake relationship with the man she been pining after for 5 years.

As their charade moves forward Aaron starts to notice feelings for Alice he hasn't noticed before. Maybe Alice wasn't the safe option after all.

What I liked about this book

Alice and Aaron's character development is well written. Both characters grow considerably as the book goes on. They both have barriers in there life which they need to overcome e.g. anxiety, grief.

The romance is interesting and I enjoyed the fake dating/friends to lovers tropes.

The story is told from both Alice and Aaron's perspectives.

There are some steamy scenes but not to the point where it eclipses the story.

What I didn't like

In order for Aaron to notice her, Alice had to completely change her appearance.

I ended up completely sucked into this book. I was routing for Alice the entire time and found her to be quite relatable. The Alice Equation is a fun, light read which will appeal to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance.

Writing a review of your own book feels kind of weird, like those moments when you're parading around in your pretty new dress, only to find you've got the hem stuck in your undies. Hopefully this isn't one of those moments. What I loved about writing Alice and Aaron's journey, was the delicious awkwardness of falling in love, the misunderstandings, the embarrassing and tender moments, but above all, I loved exploring how when we really and truly fall in love with the right person, it makes us a better version of ourselves. (The Laws of Love series explores that in different ways). I hope, that in some small way, The Alice Equation, achieves what I set out to write (Did I say it's sexy, too, yes a bit sexy... well quite a lot sexy). Anyway, I am sure, dear reader, you will make up your own mind.

Thank you to BookSirens for sending me this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a cute book. It's a story of two flawed people that can't look beyond their fears to see what is right before them. I enjoyed the banter and tension between the characters.

I felt a little frustrated with both Aaron and Alice as the book progressed, because both stood in the way of their own happiness. But it also made it very relatable. Overall it was a delightful book. I really enjoyed it.

This is a cute contemporary romance about Alice, a girl who would rather fall in love with a fictional guy than a real one (except for her bff Aaron), on the other hand Aaron is the biggest womanizer she knows. However, when he gets a job in a very family-orientated company, he needs to present himself as a respectable man, and is there anyone better to play the role of a fake girlfriend than his best friend Alice.

Little do they both know their fake relationship will soon become very real.

I usually really enjoy these types of romances, and although I’m not to keen on friends-to-lovers (I’m more of an enemies-to-lovers kind of gal) but it was done very well in this case.

The whole book was so cute and what I love the most is that Alice is a book lover (like a lot of us on this site are) and so she’s very funny and relatable. I love how whilst falling for Aaron more and more, her confidence also sky rocketed and she managed to conquer some of her biggest fears. That’s the kind of character building I like to see.

Aaron is a womanizer but he wasn’t painted as an jerk-face like those kind of characters usually are. I really enjoyed his character as well and how although he’s not big on emotions, he managed to open himself up more and more.

I love the side story of Alice finding out (and reuniting) with her father and I thought that was so cute and very beautiful.

My favorite character by far is Polly and ever since finding out the sequel is about her, I’m very interested in reading it! She’s such a likeable character and I would definitely want to hang out with her.

To summarize, this is such a cute and funny romance and I really enjoyed it. I hate how this isn’t more popular so I would definitely recommend it to all of you contemporary lovers!

THE REVIEW FOR THE BOOK: THE ALICE EQUATION.

GENRE: CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE.
TROPE: FAKE RELATIONSHIP, FRIENDS TO LOVERS, ROMANTIC COMEDY, HEA.
TYPE: STANDALONE...BOOK #1 OF LAWS OF LOVE.
POV: THIRD PERSON: DUAL PERSPECTIVE.
MY RATING: 4" HEARTWARMING" STARS.

Alice Montgomery, a girl who lives between the ends of novel in her own fantasy world. After graduating, she still works in her mom's bookshop but cannot be more content with her life.
Aaron was a playboy to the T. For him, commitment to a relationship is same like pigs flying. But his new job at a pristidged legal firm requires him to be portrayed as a family bounded man.

Aaron and Alice have been friends for 5 years and asking her to fake a relationship with him comes naturally to him but what he doesn't know is Alice has hold a torch for him forever. And when love plays an equation in their lies...God only knows what will be their end...

This book was entertaining and a compelling read. Once you start it..you will end up finishing it in one go...thats how much it entrance would with its easy to follow characters and delightful narrative.
The relationship forming between Alice Alice Aaron outside the lie was innocent which is only possible between friends.
I recommend this book to readers looking for enjoying a light Romance with characters to warm their heart and make you believe in love.

What a terrific debut novel and start to The Laws of Love Series. Davina Stone immediately draws you in with this fun and flirtatious romcom with our main characters and (possible) love interests, Alice and Aaron. Written from both points of view, we're privy to two sides of this fresh take on the 'fake date' trope, and I thoroughly enjoyed the humour and heart of this approach. Supported by some wonderful characters, including some thoughtful family dynamics, I'm excited to see who will get the starring role in the next book in the series.

And lastly, a mention that it was fabulous to read a book set in my hometown of Perth.

A fabulous contemporary Aussie romance - a must read.

Thank you to BookSirens for providing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

My review is linked here for everyone to check out on my blog Honey Roselea Reads! Here is a preview to what the review will look like:

Being best friends for five years, Alice Montgomery and Aaron Blake are as close as ever. Except one day, during a job interview, Aaron lets it slip that he might be dating Alice. Except he's not. Now. Alice and Aaron are pushed into a fake relationship, but perhaps there are some underlying feelings that have yet to be exposed.

The Alice Equation shows us the roots of friends to lovers and fake dating with Alice and Aaron and the way that they take their time in showing their feelings. I loved that their friendship was so strong and that's what made them gravitate toward each other from the start.

I gave The Alice Equation four stars, really enjoying Alice and Aaron together. It started off unrequited but not all love ends unrequited. I enjoyed the way Aaron had these small shocks when he seemed to discover this new...

When I first read the synopsis, I was determined that I would need to read this book:
- Friends to lovers? Check!
- Fake dating? Check!
- One of the main characters being a huge book lover? Check!

The above elements are ingredients for what could make a good book, in my opinion and it indeed was! I love the character development of Aaron and Alice so much.
The fact that this story was told through both Aaron's and Alice's point of view, really added to the story and put more depth in it. It was interesting to see both Aaron's and Alice's view on events.

I flew through this book and read it within 24 hours (while being in the middle of my exams, whelp!). So if you're looking for a quick romance read, this might be the book for you! It ended up being one of my favorite books of 2020.

I received an advance review copy for free(thank you Booksirens and the author), and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I do not normally read contemporaries, but lately, it’s what I’ve been in the mood to read. And when I saw this story is about a friend to romance, I knew I needed to read it.

In this book we follow Aaron who is trying to land a job at a huge law firm, but in order to “fit in”, he needs to be rather close with everyone there, even sharing personal things and relationships. So, he decides to pretend he has a girlfriend, Alice, who happens to be a very good friend of his(and is also helplessly in love with him), and so we read about their fake-dating and all the personal turmoil they go through as the story progresses.

I loved the dynamic between Alice and Aaron. They are so easy and comfortable around each other, and so it’s fun to see them both struggle with this fake-dating since Alice is in love with Aaron, and Aaron is learning about his own feelings.

I adored Alice! She’s totally the girl I would hang out with watching period dramas, talking about regional romances or any books, and eating vegan food. I loved her growth in this book. She obviously had low self confidence at the beginning, and then she learned to gain that confidence and set out in the world to become the person she really wants to be, no more waiting for something to just happen. She took the reigns on her own life.

And Aaron. Well, let’s just say that sometimes I wanted to take a book from the Book Genie and smack it over his head a few times. He was so oblivious to her feelings for him that it was adorable to watch him struggle and yet frustrating all at the same time. I understand why he had a hard time with commitment. I know someone personally who suffers from depression, and it’s no joke and everyone handles grief differently. He just happened to decide no commitment was the safest route. When he finally seemed to see Alice, I can see how that would quite literally freak him out, and obviously have no idea what to say, and sometimes what he said I would smack my head and just be like “oh my god! No!” 🤣

I also loved reading about the different families. They each had family issues, and watching that grow and change was lovely to see since I love books that involve family, especially flawed ones, because they’re so much more relatable.

The only qualm I had is the book’s vocabulary was a little too dirty for my taste. Don’t get me wrong! I love steamy romances, but I don’t think they need to have all the dirty words added to it in order to be considered steamy.

This book is exactly what I needed to read. A nice, light, and fun read about two friends falling in love and the growth and change they experienced with each other. I highly recommend this book to everyone, especially if you love the friends to lovers romances 😊

Alice was just such an unbelievably boring character- so much of her personality and thoughts were just consumed by Aaron. It felt pretty dated actually- we've come a long way when writing female romance heroines, even when they're pining they're given a lot more depth and substance than poor Alice was given here. I can understand miscommunication but Alice and Aaron did NOT talk, and I don't care how much trauma and baggage you have, you are grown adults and you will NOT fucking snog with the intensity of animals in heat, then decouple and have radio silence for days.

Thanks to BookSirens and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

The Alice Equation has been a great read to start this 2021! This contemporary romance book is simply fantastic. From start to finish has been an easy read and not too boring or too cheesy.

When I picked this book up, I was in a reading slump and I prayed to get rid of it with this lecture. And oh, it did disappear. I finished this book in two whole nights -and I didn't do it in once because I had to sleep-. The writing is fast-paced and has the right amounts of details. As a person whose English is not their first language, I really appreciate that!

The first thing I loved about the characters is Alice's development. She started as a shy girl, not sure what to do with her life and really unconfident with herself. Trough the book, we start seeing how she gets rid of the insecurities and becomes more confident in herself. And this is not a fast change. It goes so slowly that when I realized that Alice was not the same girl as at the start, the book had almost ended! What I liked the most about this change is that she didn't change her personality at all.

Aaron from the other hand started as an outgoing and confident man, but in the last pages is shown how well he hid his concerns, that he didn't even realize he had. I'm not gonna lie, I did shed some tears when reading the last pages. In addition, I loved how the book shows both points of view: from Alice and Aaron.

A detail I really appreciate is the incorporation of anxiety and panic attacks in the story. From my point of view, they were really well portrayed, as well as incorporated in the story -they didn't happen for no reason-.

Overall, this book is a solid four stars. I can't wait to read more from the author!

25 year old Alice Montgomery runs a bookshop with her mother in Perth, Western Australia. Alice has always been a wallflower, prefering books to people, and lives with anxiety and panic attacks.

This is how she first met her best friend Aaron Blake 5 years ago at University, where he found her crouched behind the auditorium regulating her breathing. Since that time they've been inseperable, although Alice is hiding her true (much more than friends) feelings for him.

So when Aaron gets a job at a new Law firm with the expectation he has a partner, he blurts out Alice's name. Now they're living out 3 months of fake dating, which she agrees to with the promise that he will teach her how to flirt. They're playing with fire now: will their connection be 🔥, or will their friendship go down in flames?

This is the first book in Author Davinas Stone's series The Laws of Love, and was re-released today with an amended cover & a significant rewrite. Thank you Davina for providing me with an early copy to read and review! An easy 5 stars again!

Firstly, I LOVE that I'm reading a book set in my hometown! Perth is such a beautiful place and Davina sets the scene wonderfully.

Alice is the perfect FMC for me; her character development was incredible and there were so many moments where she recognised her growth and I was cheering her on! She and Aaron had incredible chemistry and I was living for those sizzling 'teaching' moments 🔥🔥

Something I've also appreciated about this series is Davina's knack of ensuring that each book incorporates a mental health diagnosis. Her skilled writing style completely normalises what those living with these conditions go through, and I truly think that these books can really shine a light on how those with mental health should be represented.

As I am reviewing this book weeks after I finished reading it, I might not remember everything. Bear with me. One thing I do remember was that I actually liked it.

As the book title suggests, We follow Alice who even after graduating topic of her class, chooses to work in her mother's second-hand bookshop (not that I necessarily think that is a bad thing). She has always dreamed of going out into the world but she has never really allowed herself to let go. Then she meets Aaron one day while having a panic attack. He helps her and she falls in love with him (bad idea). She doesn't tell him how she feels and for years she becomes his friend, the couch for him to crash on. She knows every sordid detail about his non-existent love life.
So one day when he comes to her asking her to pretend to be his longtime girlfriend so that he can get a job at a misogynistic company. She agrees, hoping that maybe her unrequited love with at least see the light.

Aside from the love story, there are so many elements in this book that just makes it great to read. We find out that she actually has a father and the circumstance of her birth. She gets to meet her father and she breaks out of her shell. Thinking again, I really liked this book and I would highly recommend it.

I loved everything about The Alice Equation! It was fun, flirty and well paced. I found myself cheering Alice and Aaron on as the book progressed and they stumbled through the messy world of friends-to-fake dating-to-friends with benefits. If you enjoy Christina Lauren or Jasmine Guillory's work, you'll love this as well. A brilliant debut from Davina Stone!

A cute contemporary romance.

Even though, right from the start, all the cards are layed upon the table for the reader, there is no journey of discovery an no secrets about the protagonists, this book takes you on a journey anyway.
I will admit, I was apprehensive during the first few chapters, but somewhere along the line, I got sucked in anyway. Due to the good writing, I suppose. There are no big, unexpected plot twists here (to me, that is), but the whole novel was a nice journey.
I did rather enjoy the Australian vibe throughout, which felt very natural.
All in all, a nice escapist, relaxing read, and this reader looks forward to the next installment in the series.

I received a copy through Booksirens for review, and am leaving this review voluntarily. Opinions are my own.

Thank you to the author, Davina Stone, and Book Sirens for this free e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis:
The Alice Equation by Davina Stone is basically a fake dating/friends-to-lovers romance. It follows our two main characters who have been best friends for five years: Alice and Aaron. Alice works in a bookshop and has been pining after Aaron for years whilst Aaron is a party guy with commitment issues. When Aaron tries to land a job at a highly prestigious law firm, he needs a fake date to show his commitment to the law firm's idea of "family values." Alice agrees to fake date Aaron so that he can get the job. Throughout the book, Alice and Aaron uncover hidden secrets and lies as they try to navigate and understand their complex relationship.

Note/Disclaimer: This is DEFINITELY a new adult story. It contains mature themes, please proceed with caution.

Content Warnings: Sexual Tension, Sex, Grief, Expletive Language (cursing).

Review:
The Alice Equation by Davina Stone really took me for a wild ride. This novel was extremely fast-paced and some very INTENSE things were already happening by page 100. I love how Aaron and Alice's friendship is already pre-established and they've been friends for a long time. It really makes the romance and the events of the book seem more realistic and believable. At times, I got extremely frustrated with the miscommunication that kept happening between the two main characters.

I found Aaron to be quite arrogant and full of himself at the beginning of the story. He's pretty selfish and treats Alice with little regard, taking her friendship for granted. I really appreciated how his personality develops throughout the story and he learns how to become more open and accept his emotions. His closed-off behavior makes sense because of his traumatic past but I appreciated the fact that near the end of the story, he begins to move past this.

The story mostly focused on the romance and I wish there had been more of a B plot throughout the story beyond just the romance. A secondary plot was introduced quite late into the story at around page 200 that I ABSOLUTELY adored. I really wish we would've gotten more of that in the story. Another critique I have for the story is the lack of development in the setting/environment. I didn't realize that this story even took place in Australia until around the halfway point in the story. If there were subtle hints in the book suggesting that it took place in Australia, I missed most of them as an American. I learned that it took place in Australia only when it was blatantly stated in the story.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book but some scenes were a little intense on the smut for my taste. This would've been fine if there has been some more plot to carry the story through. I liked the characters' connection with each other and the other relationships portrayed throughout the book. Having these other fleshed out relationships made the story and characters feel more realistic. I think the biggest critiques I have for the story was the fact that the setting of the story and the secondary plot point felt underdeveloped. I considered rating this a solid four-star, but have lowered my rating because of my issues with the setting and secondary plot development. I have rounded up my rating in order to input it into Goodreads.

Rating: 3.5/5 stars (rounded up to a 4 star)

Disclaimer: An eARC was provided via Book Sirens and the Author in exchange for an honest review. The Thoughts, opinions & feelings expressed in the review are therefore, my own.

This was my introduction to Davina Stone and the wonderful Book Sirens - a site where Indie Authors can publicise their work, while readers can find some hidden gems.

The Alice Equation for me was THAT hidden gem. A friends to lovers with fake dating trope was EXACTLY I needed to get me out of a funk while my baby underwent neutering surgery!

Alice lives a predictable life -
she works at her mum’s bookshop (gotta love a heroine who loves books!), loved bingeing on romance novels and is secretly in love with her best friend, the commitment phobe Aaron.

Aaron lives partying and relationships that aren’t deeper than skin level aka one night stands and superficial dates. But when he wants to land a job at his dream law firm,- job interview where he tells one little fib to confirm his job - that he has a serious girlfriend with whom he is committed to bring forth a future that involves a house, two kids and a white picket fence!

Aaron knows that Alice won’t hesitate in helping him - after all she is his best friend. And she would also be the safest bet; they both know each other well enough to actually get the wrong idea.

their banter, their feelings for each other had me feeling all snuggly - but it was how they came together that had me quite charmed!

I do, however wish, that the author hadn’t taken the “Hollywood route” of giving Alice the makeover for Aaron to actually notice her more than his friend. She deserved to be seen for the real her. But that’s just a teeny tiny part of the book - and The Alice Equation still has made me look forward to the author’s upcoming books in this series!

Wow, this book.

I don't tend to read friends to lovers books, because I enjoy enemies to lovers a lot more, however "The Alice Equation" by Davina Stone, pleasantly surprised me.

I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that this story got into the action right away. Within the first few pages, our MMC , Aaron, realizes that the only way to get his dream job is to pretend he's in a committed relationship. Which is completely foreign to him and his uncommitted values. How strange is it that the first person he just so happens to think of is Alice, our FMC, and his best friend of five years.

During one of my favorite tropes, fake dating, both Aaron, and Alice's character development is done in an incredible manner.

AND THE TENSION!!! Wow, sometimes I had to take a breather!

Just as well, I enjoyed how Davina Stone tackled the male stereotype of them being "emotionally detached". In this book, we get to see the impact a life changing event has on Aaron and his relationships.

However, I truly wish that one of the side character's feelings for Alice could have been developed a lot more. While I enjoyed the jealousy, I was incredibly surprised when this character had begun going after our FMC.

Yet, all in all, the writing was very modern, fast paced, and assured that a connection between both the reader and the characters would be formed. I absolutely loved the characters, especially Polly, and can't wait for her story!

This was such a fun read. From start to finish. Davina Stone has done a great job with the story!
The characters were relatable - friends to lovers - nerdy girl and pin-up boy. Lots of external drama.

I loved some of the descriptions and analogies - no clichés - obviously a lot of care and attention has gone into crafting the story, descriptions and getting into the heads of the characters.

Add this to your New Year's reading list - it won't disappoint!

This book was utterly delightful, a fun and flirty rom com with friends to lovers and fake dating.
I really enjoyed Alice and Aaron’s friendship and how that evolved into something more. Both characters had to grow to get their happy ever after. I loved watching bookish Alice grow in confidence and face her fears. Watching commitment shy Aaron struggle against his attraction when Alice innocently (or not) explored her emerging confidence had me grinning from ear to ear. Aaron had reasons for his behaviour, and his kindness to Alice when she was dealing with anxiety was a big tick in my book.

It wasn’t just the main characters I loved. The supporting characters were equally wonderful. I loved the way Alice and Aaron interacted with their families and friends. The subplot about Alice’s father was beautiful and gave me all the feels. And yay for the supportive step mum who was a positive force in Aaron’s life.

This book masterfully ran the gamut from heart warmingly sweet to toe curlingly sexy. There were tender moments, awkward moments, heart racing moments. It was light-hearted and fun but also dealt with topics such as anxiety with insight and compassion.

This book stands alone but I am delighted to know it is also a part of a series. I for one CANNOT WAIT for the next one.

The Alice Equation added up to the perfect read for me.

I received an ARC from the author and am leaving a voluntary review.

Who are Aaron, Archibald "Archie", Chalres, and Geoff? Where are they? What do they each have in common? How did they meet or how do they know one another? How long have they known one another? It was a very slow reading book for me. Normally books like this would not take me 5 days of reading time. I found that once I forced myself to really sit down and read, it went a little more quickly, though it still took me 5 days. While I loved the idea of the story line, for me I struggled to connect with the story. I could not keep my focus on reading. I did find myself in need of tissues 3/4 of the way into the story when it came to Aaron. Once I finished, I can say I that I did not regret reading the story. I was glad I did not give up on it.
