The Goddess's Saga #3

Return of the Goddess

Rate this book
Stephan Forks should be dead. When he opens his eyes to an endless desert, he suspects he might have ended up in hell. It doesn't seem fair after staving off a threat that could have eradicated the universe, but life isn't fair.

His girlfriend, demigoddess Maria Callaway, is blissfully unconscious and shows no signs of waking up. At least she's there, and her presence indicates he might be alive after all.

The situation is desperate, and does not get better from discovering they're trapped on a world outside the regular universe. A world lacking the basic means of survival, but rich in heat and sand, battered by a relentless sun. Saving himself and Maria will require him to face impossible odds as well as ghosts from the past.

Born in Sweden in the early 1970's, Maria showed a large interest for books early in her life. Even before she was able to read or write, she made her mom staple papers together that she drew suns in, and proudly declared them to be the "Sun Book." They were all about the sun. This fascination with books and writing lasted through her teens, but as an adult, her career veered off towards desktop publishing and technical literature.

Even on this winding road through very different employers, she managed to always incorporate writing in her work, making a living by making user manuals and documentations for computer systems. Not until the year 2000 did she find what would be her professional home at SSAB Swedish Steel, where she worked with logistics for the better part of a decade.

During 2008 she felt that it was time for a change, and she promptly enrolled in college and relocated to Florida in November that year. This change of lifestyle gave her the peace of mind and time she needed to pursue her interest in writing fiction, and this far it has resulted in three published novels; "Kidnapped," "Touch of the Goddess," and "Undercover," and several more are on the way.

Return of the Goddess was not at all what I expected but Maria Hammarblad continually astonishes me. Her ability to weave an unbelievable world into something almost tangible is unparalleled. This book was a rollercoaster ride of tension, smiles and even a few teary moments. In this particular book in The Goddess Saga, the main character Maria (the Goddess herself) finds an understanding for humanity she never expected. The lessons she learns in this book are relatable and humorous but the story never loses its element of surprise and you constantly find yourself wondering what will happen next. Not only does the Goddess find compassion for humans but her love interest Stephan finds an internal strength which surpasses his physical might. He is met with personal demons, extenuating circumstances and hauntings from his past. Several times I found myself with my mouth hung wide open in disbelief. For me the book was wonderfully and brilliantly confusing, keeping me guessing and gasping with amazement, as these heroes face their trials head on. I really enjoyed this beautifully written, adventurous journey and only found disappointment in it being the last book of the Saga. For me there are still so many possibilities and I seriously hope Ms. Hammarblad finds more adventures for these lovable characters.
