Joyee's books used to be an automatic buy it now for me. Some of her early Marius Brothers books and of course any thing she co-authored with Stormy Glenn (who has never let me down) have been a pleasure to read. Then she changed her writing style to first person and the quality of the stories has dropped. At first I just thought it was because they were written in first person. Like most romance readers first person style is one I'm least likely to try. The pleasure of third person is you get in the mind and hearts of all the MCs, and even some of the secondary characters who will go on to get their own story. First person I tend to feel like I'm ready someone diary. While I would find that fascinating in non-fiction it always lacks something for me in romantic fiction.

But I digress...
4/5 of the book is from Barnabas point of view. But then when he is unconscious the book is from Digger point of view then back to Barnabas when he wakes up. Are you confused yet? But here is what get's me, Digger is new to the scene, just meet his mates less then two weeks ago and we get his perspective, but Miles who not only has known Barnabas his whole life but also guarded his parents (who are brought up many, many times in this book) doesn't get his point of view.

This is supposed to be a menage and all three being mates together. I never felt the passion, lust and love between all three. It's feels more like two brothers and a woman. You never really feel any connection between Miles and Digger. Oh sure there is sex, but even when all three are together it is more about what Miles, and Digger feel for Barnabas. Barnabas is the baby of the group (21 years old) and controls all of the ups and downs in the relationship and the story.

The one pleasure I've found in the 'Beyond the Marius Brothers' books so far is getting reacquainted with the Marius Family. Loved them from the start and it is always nice to see what is going on with them.

I don't know what really turned my opinion on this books, seeing as I loved the other books.

But I guess, when I think about it, the only thing that let me down was not being able to see the relationship between Miles and Digger. Yes, the book is titled after Bas but I felt that Miles have a very minor role in the store it seemed to revolve around Digger and Bas and that was very disappointing.

I would have loved to see the relationship grow between Miles and Digger, it seems he was pushed out a lot of times. Digger only seemed to comfort Bas at the beginning instead of being a mate to Miles too, like he should have. It felt very one sided.

Near the end, it said that Miles and Digger had said they loved each other but it wasn't written, that was disappointing too although the sex scene, however small and avoid of many details, between Miles and Digger was nice to see.

I really did not like the main character in the book, Barnabas. I also hated never getting Miles POV. If I don't like the person I'm getting the POV from as much as or more than the character I'm not I know it;s a bad book.

Let me start by saying that I have already read the majority of the books in this series and was following it for a long time. I lost track of it and realized recently that I had about 4 new books in the Marius World Series to read. But it has been a long time since I read some of them, and I couldn't really remember much of the overarching plot. I also hadn't read much of the "Beyond the Marius Brothers" stories and never even added the ones I read onto Goodreads.
I decided to take up the challenge of re-reading all the books (21 so far) in this series chronologically and writing a few thoughts on each. So I will set new dates to the "read date" section as I go along.

Interesting and nice!

2012 Review:

Ah, we’re back to awkward, anachronistic language and satisfying silliness.
And explicit sex. A bold move on part of the author introduced doubling. I think this is probably the first time I’ve encountered this in a romance. You know, outside of all-out, non-committal porn.

I wonder if something’s wrong with me in that I really enjoyed this. It helps not to question anything, of course, and to ignore the general language used. But yeah, I really liked the main focal character, Bas, and the other two actually worked well in their context.

All in all, this was definitely one of the better books in all of that particular universe, and a threesome at that. Go figure.
