When a sudden rash of stolen cars brings Millie Morrow's daughter under suspicion for conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, Millie convinces her two best friends, Trish Anderson and Edna Radcliff, to help her find out who is trying to frame Michelle. Knowing the odds are against them that they will be able to discover who the thugs are, Trish and Edna nevertheless go through the motions of investigating, hoping Millie will feel productive in helping her daughter while the police do the real detective work. But the situation becomes much more serious when a body is found in front of the insurance office Michelle works for. And even though the evidence pointing to an inside job is purely circumstantial, it could still destroy Michelle, something the ladies are determined to prevent. They're going to have to work fast to present a different theory for the police to consider, though, since Millie has once again alienated Henry Espinoza, the chief of police. And she's alienated someone else, too, if the suspicious incidents suddenly plaguing her are anything to go by. Keeping Millie out of trouble while attempting to clear her daughter's name will take every ounce of skill . . . or luck . . . the amateur sleuths possess.
I recommend not bothering. The idea is cute, three older women BFFs who solve a crime together. But the writing is weak and clumsy and trite, and the way the ladies carry on is just irritating.
Anyone who enjoys a good cozy mystery. Plus the close knit friendship of these ladies will love the silver sleuth series, Millie is a hoot, while Trish tries to keep everyone safe, and Edna keeps them all classy and well fed. I cannot wait for the next installment!
I love reading a cosy mystery at bedtime, it helps lull me off to sleep. This had all the makings of being a good read but for one thing, or character, Millie. I have never loathed a character so much in the many books I have read in my lifetime. Sorry, but she spoiled the whole book for me. I read to the end, but boy, I was glad to get there. No more Silver Sleuths for me.
I really enjoyed this book, I have not had so any laughs from a book in a very long time. The things that these older ladies got up to had me in stitches, I would highly recommend for a book that will give you lots of laughs....
The girl's second outing is just as cute as the first.
Edna, Trish and the irrepressible Millie break up a stolen car ring while clearing Millie's daughter's reputation. I want to be like Millie when I'm 80!
I again have the honor of reviewing one of the best reads in the cozy genre.“Deadly Policy” written by Mitzi Kelly is the second book in Ms. Kelly’s Silver Sleuths Mystery series. The first being “Classic Revenge.”These books have a cast of characters seldom seen in mysteries; three very feisty ladies who made their debut in Classic Revenge and are better at snooping than most of the detective’s in today’s fiction.
In this particular book the ladies, Millie Morrow, an extremely stubborn 80-year old Pitt Bull of a mother and her two best friends, Edna Radcliff, a 65-year old and a very shy, gentle lady and Trish Anderson, a 45-year old that is very level headed and tries to keep Millie from going off the deep end. These women are indestructible when it comes to protecting someone that they love and Millie’s daughter is that someone. The insurance company that Michelle (Millie's daughter) works for has had to pay off on a series of car thefts on policy holders and it seems that Michelle is going to be dragged into a case of fraud as the authorities believe that the fraud is being run by an insider at the company. The three women go into detective mode, much to the distress of local law enforcement and kick it up a notch to go after their ‘suspects.’
As they swing into high gear, a body is found outside the insurance office where Michelle works. This complicates things for a while, and the ladies have to work a little faster.Even though Michelle wasn’t caught with a smoking gun, the case against her is growing.Millie and friends, including the Chief of Police, Henry Espinoza, are on it.Things don’t go well at first as Millie has a tendency to make a lot of enemies in a very short time but, this team of ‘Silver Sleuths’ will keep you reading and laughing as they work to solve this case. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and even though it’s the second in a series, it definitely stands alone and the reader will be able to make a smooth transition into the next story. All mystery/cozy/thriller/etc. readers will love this and especially the ladies over the age of 40 who can really show that they are still full of life. This is a keeper!!Don’t miss it.
DEADLY POLICY by MITZI KELLY was such a fun read. This is the second book in the Silver Sleuths Mystery series, but it is a stand alone. I have not had the pleasure of reading Classic Revenge, the first book in the series, and I had no problem following the action in Deadly Policy.
What do you get when you have a tenacious 80 year-old bulldog of a mother, Millie Morrow, a 65 year-old timid, soft spoken, genteel woman, Edna Radcliff, and a 45 year-old woman who is the voice of reason, Trish Anderson? You get a team of women on a mission that has a combined total of 190 years of life's experience as well as laugh after laugh.
When it becomes clear that Millie's daughter is being implicated as the inside person at an insurance agency for a rash of car thefts perpetrated on policy holders, Millie and her friends kick into high gear to clear her name. You will follow the funny actions these silver sleuths take to solve the case. This is a lighthearted read that will have you laughing at the interactions of these elderly ladies taking on not only the bad guys but the local police as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed this read and highly recommend it to women of all ages. Especially to those of us over the age of 40. I can only hope that I'm as spunky as these wonderful characters when I reach their age.
I grabbed this one off the display shelf at the library. It's a cute, light read (um, if you can say "cute and light" about a murder). I really didn't think I was going to enjoy it at first. Millie is beyond annoying, like an aged Agatha Raisin. The character got better as the story went on. Edna and Trish more than compensate for Millie being so grating. I guess if they both grew spines and didn't let Millie boss them around, there wouldn't be a story, but I think I'd move if Millie lived anywhere near me.
The plot is there. The characters are pretty well-defined. One character is annoying to me with her pushiness- even though her heart is in the right place. But the other 2 characters do a decent job of balancing that character.
The first few pages almost seemed promising; and then unfortunately it started its downward spiral. I don't know if this book was supposed to be patterned after the TV Show "Golden Girls," but if it was, it certainly fell short of the mark. The 80-year-old Millie was obnoxious and insufferable and the story line was weak. I don't know if this book was meant to be funny, but it just grated on me., but I did finish the book and was glad when I came to the "the end."
It was s a fun and enticing read! Ms. Kelly is a great storyteller who creates memorable characters. This sequel was at least as good as the original! I'd definitely pick up another Silver Sleuths Mystery! The only problem is that the text-to-speech doesn't work right: it repeats syllables occasionally (about once every 4-5 paragraphs).
The first book was better. While I still like the characters and enjoy their relationship, the writing felt lazy here with some repetitiveness and rushing. I also knew who the bad guy was almost immediately. However, I do like the characters enough that I would probably at least try the third book (if there is one).
