The Best Fantasy Since 'Lord of the Rings'

Serenya Crowe was born during a dreadful storm as unspeakable beings flew on the wind - beings intent on seizing the child as soon as she drew breath. Her stepfather, Douglas Barnaby, took the baby and heroically ran through the terrible night, just ahead of her pursuers, bringing her to safety and bringing her up as his own child.
Thus begins the story of a child who knew neither her father nor her mother. Her mother, Alina, was a wood elf, but nobody knows who her father was. Only her mother knew, and she died giving birth to the child. There is something special about Serenya. She is a talented artist and musician. She can interpret dreams. And she is marked by a birth defect, a legacy of her unknown father. Everything suggests that she is a child of destiny.
A year ago I had the privilege of reviewing Mysti Parker's first novel, 'A Ranger's Tale'. I thought then that it was surprising good for a first novel and I was particularly impressed with her construction of the fantasy world of Tallenmere. It is depicted in great detail with its own plants, animals and human or near-human species. It even has its own well-developed mythology.
But this, the second book in the series, has taken my breath away. Ms Parker's writing style has matured beyond belief in the intervening year. 'A Ranger's Tale' was a very good read. 'Serenya's Song' is a masterpiece. The magical world of Tallenmere has acquired more depth, the characters are more skilfully drawn, the language is beautiful. And it is so exciting. A real page-turner with unexpected twists and dramatic scenes. There is something Tolkienesque in the breadth and scope of this work.
Those who loved 'A Ranger's Tale' will be pleased to know that some of the well-loved characters return in 'Serenya's Song', notably Jayden Ravenwing and Caliphany, once lovers, now staunch friends fighting against the greatest threat that Tallenmere has ever had to face.
I still keep thinking about this book days after I finished it.
A real masterpiece.

After reading the first Tallenmere novel, "A Ranger's Tale," I was eager for the second installment. While technically part of a series, this story holds its own, so don't worry if you haven't read the first... you can jump feet first into the world without feeling lost.

Ms. Parker weaves a thoroughly enchanting tale this time out. While I liked her first book, there was something so much MORE here that I just loved! The pace of the book was steady and captivating, then at around 70% it just ratchets up to a seemingly non-stop, white-knuckled ride that I didn't want to put down.

The love story is beautiful and the supporting characters vibrant. In my opinion: a must read fantasy romance.

My immediate response to Serenya's Song is just "wow" -- what an incredible vision Mysti Parker has. She has written something close to an epic here, with brilliant visuals, fantastic plot that continually took me by surprise, intriguing characters...once more I have been swept away into Tallenmere. I loved every minute and cannot wait until Book 3: Hearts in Exile.

Top 5 reasons to love Serenya's Song (in no particular order):

1) Jayden is incredible as a leading man. Caring, selfless, handsome, a tender lover -- who wouldn't want to cuddle up in bed with a guy like that? Plus, he's an artist and a talented musician. I'm his groupie already!

2) Original plot -- I still cannot get over the twists and turns that threw me time and again as I was reading. Just when I thought I had it all figured out -- surprise! I love that in a book!

3) Delicious use of language. Hey, if you're a word geek like me, you will find simply beautiful imagery and phrasing which truly brings the story to life. I bet I could draw a detailed illustration of any location Mysti describes, just from the way she describes it. Her love scenes are excellent, bringing in music as a metaphor and giving us even more understanding of the protagonists, as are the action scenes.

4) If you love Tolkien, Sanctuary, Xena, The Princess Bride -- you are guaranteed to love this story. It has all the elements and clearly communicates Mysti Parker's affection for the genre.

5) The epic playlist for the epic tale -- I will be listening to it when I read it for the second time. I love when authors develop soundtracks for their stories, it just works so well.

Thanks again, Mysti, for reminding me how much I love fantasy, elves, fairies, and magic!

Review for Serenya's Song
I read the first book in this series, A Ranger's Tale and expected a continuation of that book with more development of the characters with the same type of plot/story line as with many PNR series. Instead this is a stand alone book with its own plot/conflicts/storyline and character development with only the protagonist from the first book throughout much of this one until the end when we meet again the hero and heroine from the first book.
That being said, the author does a great job spinning this tale filled with mystery intrigue and unexpected twists as the reader slowly learns who/what Serenya is and how dangerous she could potentially be.
Serenya lives her life day to day in an unfulfilling marriage as Lady Crowe. Her husband, Sebastian becomes increasingly jealous and possessive especially when Jayden former musician to the King makes his way to their little town and falls immediately for Serenya. Jayden berates himself for once again falling for a woman who cannot be his, as Serenya struggles with the feelings she has for Jayden and the intensity in her lust for her husband, lying to herself that its love she has for him. When in fact she loves Jayden. Sounds like a simple story so far right... It's not!!! Serenya is not what she seems. She doesn't know what she is, raised by her human stepfather after her mother died while delivering her, she had no one to guide her as she developes strange powers/sensations. In walks another man to throw a wrench in the mess, Delmarr. He watches her too closely, knows things about her she has tried to keep secret and pretty much just freaks Serenya right out!!
The plot thickens as Serenya's peers grow stronger, her feelings for Jayden grow more intense and her husbands lusts border on questionable consent/abuse. I will not tell anymore as that would then lead to spoilers!!! Read the book!! :).
Fantastic read, worthy of all five stars.

After reading A Ranger’s Tale by Mysti Parker, I eagerly awaited her second book, Serenya’s Song. Wow, was it ever worth the wait.

The excitement generated in the prologue set the stage for the rest of the book. I started reading as soon as my copy arrived in the mail and finished at 2:00 am. It was that good. The character leapt from the pages and drew me in to Summerwind where Lady Serenya Crow’s life unfolded.

The book has everything from romance, music, sex, betrayal magic, and creatures beyond imagination. I was amazed at how well the book was written; the depth of the characters, the plot twists, vivid descriptions, and an ending that gripped my heart.

There were just enough references and cross-over characters from A Ranger’s Tale to stimulate my memory bank and let me enjoy the book again.

Well done, Mysti, I’m looking forward to book three.

Serenya's Song is a masterpiece of romance, broken hearts, elves, and an entire world of exotic creatures with strange, often terrifying powers. This book starts out like most other romances, but it doesn't stop there. Hang on for the ride, because Mysti Parker grabs you and pulls you into the fantasy world she's created. Her imagination knows no bounds in this book. Her imagery and detailed descriptions leave you rooted to your seat. I could not put this book down. I felt, saw, heard and smelled all that the characters did. It's that powerful.

If you love romance, fantasy, paranormal books that you can't put down, get this book!!

I'm not sure I know how to talk about Serenya's Song without gushing. The adjectives just want to flow out of my fingers. Superb. Enchanting. Heart wrenching. Breathtaking. Spell binding. Incredible.

I always enjoy lending books on my Kindle and Nook, but I honestly don't think I'm going to lend this one out to anyone. I want everyone to buy it and read it on their own, because I want Mysti to be rewarded for such an awesome piece of fiction, and I want her to keep writing.

Serenya's song, by the way, is absolutely phenomenal (the song, although that actually applies to the book as well!)

Between a rock and hard place…or even worse, Serenya Crowe finds herself caught between her tyrannical husband, Sebastian, who is the Earl of Summerwind, and the wood-elf of her dreams—Jayden Ravenwing. Set in the fantasy realm of Tallenmere, Ms. Parker holds nothing back in “Serenya’s Song,” as Serenya’s life spins out of control due to ghastly visions, dark secrets about her true identity, wild escapades involving a ferocious need to feed, and the unstoppable attraction she feels toward Jayden further complicates this woman’s life as well.

Against all odds, with hopelessness ready and willing to destroy her, Serenya continues with her dangerous quest to understand her past so she’ll have a bright future. In doing so…she becomes a force to be reckoned with, indeed. I loved that this half-elf commoner was beautiful and intelligent, free-spirited, and mostly that she had inner demons to deal with, because complicated characters are always more interesting! At times tough as nails, and other times desperate for love and a sense of belonging, Serenya is a very likable character who feels the full weight of her mistakes causing her much pain and regret. However, Serenya is a strong woman and knows the future is worth fighting for.

Jayden Ravenwing, oh my…he is a good wood-elf! If you’ve read Ms. Parkers’ “A Ranger’s Tale,” then you’ll see how far he has come from Leogard and his failed marriage to Caliphany. Brave, charming, a gifted musician (like Serenya), and ready to sacrifice his happiness for hers…Jayden loves Serenya the right way—with his mind, body, and soul. Jayden and Serenya are so good together that I hope their story continues.

A powerful story, “Serenya’s Song,” is a joy to read and will linger in your thoughts because it shows how determination and courage, mixed with the support of others, can make dreams come true. Ms. Parker takes you through this whirlwind of a fantasy story quickly and with great skill. Some of my favorite parts are…

“Dull and lifeless, the cabin offered no solace. Without Caliphany there to greet me with a kiss, without Mollie reaching for me with her chubby little arms, I had nothing but my own thoughts as company. I wished I hadn’t visited the tavern tonight. That song had reminded me of everything I missed—Mollie’s giggles, Caliphany’s warm body sleeping next to mine, even the smoke from her cooking attempts. The floorboards groaned as I closed the door and strode to the table.”

“As I spoke, I fixed my eyes on the painting. This one had not been a dream, but a memory. The sun set over nearby mountains blanketed with snow, and below them, a forest community set among towering ebonwoods, some as wide in diameter as the cabins of the village. I rolled my shoulders around in a useless attempt to quell the itching on my back. I felt Jayden’s stare.”

“I leaned against my side of the carriage. Tears dripped on my cheeks. I turned my face away to hide them. All I needed was a little affection, some tenderness from him. His cold desire and my physical need for him tore at my heart. I pushed away memories of Jayden’s gentle touch. I had to put it behind me. I’d made my choice.”

“We dismounted and walked the last stretch, leading our horses toward the Haddo burial mounds. The forested road opened up to a wide meadow, where large, round hills full of tombs, one for each clan, dotted the landscape. Wildflowers and lush green grass topped each one of them. The Sandleton clan’s mourning song drifted on the breeze. We reached a low stone wall that spanned across the path.”

Okay, I’m about to “insert” the entire book! It is marvelous. If action/adventure, scorching-hot passion, deep dark secrets, and ridding a fantasy realm of an ancient evil appeal to you, do check out “Serenya’s Song!”

Ms. Parker takes us on another journey into the fantasy world of Tallenmere; as we pick up where A Ranger’s Tale left off.

Serenya grew up being raised by her step-father, Douglas Barnaby. He took her, after her mother dies in child birth and beings try to kidnap her shortly after she was born; running away to keep her safe from those that tried to kidnap her, raising her as his own. Only knowing that she was half wood-elf from her mother’s side. Not knowing her father was left her with secrets that she needed to unravel. She inherited a tremendous talent as an artist/musician, along with the ability to interpret dreams. Serenya was born with a mark that maybe marked her as a child of destiny…her legacy was lost.

Years later we find Serenya married to a tyrant of a husband, Sebastian-Earl of Summerwind. Serenya soon finds herself torn between her husband and the handsome wood-elf Jayden Raven wing that has come into her life with secrets of his own.
Unable to interpret her dreams her life seems to start spinning out of control as her pasts dark secrets about her true identity force her to have some really horrible dreams. The attraction to Jayden becomes uncontrollable as well as her hunger to feed starts to consume her.

As she continues her quest to help her understand her past, we not only see Serenya’s physical beauty, but we get a feel for her free spirit, strength and how smart she really is making her a very complex yet interesting person.

Jayden, charming and handsome and very sincere is ready to lay down all that he is for Serenya. He finds he loves her with an unconditional love as they both fight their own dark demons from the past in order to save Tallenmere.

Serenya and Jayden along with many others find that by working together they have a chance to not only save Tallenmere but also find love with each other.
We learn that when you work together you can accomplish anything.

A story filled with action-adventure-passion-dark secrets all the while as they try to rid their world from evil. Ms. Parker gives us a world filled with special plants, animals, humans and half-humans. I loved her first book A Ranger’s Tale, but Serenya’s Song brings more depth to the world of Tallenmere, the characters have evolved and are more rounded and fleshed out making them seem more real.

I say to those of you that enjoy romance and fantasy to pick up a copy of Serenya’s Song. As you read Ms. Parker’s new story you just might find yourself peering into the woods and looking for the mystical world of Tallenmere.

I thought book 1 in the Tallenmere series was good but Serenya's Song surpasses it! The action scenes are so descriptive and alive you feel your really there.

Jayden moves to Summerwind after his divorce with Caliphany. He is ready to get over that relationship and move on with his life in a new town, make a fresh start. Well it doesn't start off good when he is instantly attracted to the Earl's Wife. They have some unexpected run ins after meeting the first night in her Father's pub and the story grows from there. The characters are so well developed and realistic it makes it easy for you to see this story play out like a movie in your mind.
Serenya Crowe has a mysterious past. She is the product of Rape, no one knows who her real Father is and she has claws for hands. She is married to the Earl of Summerwind and things started out so well but lately she feels her Husband is falling out of love and is being intimate with other Women. Crushed by the fact he comes home smelling of Women's perfume she leaves the house in the middle of the night to get some air and has a run in with Jayden. She's also instantly attracted to him, not just because he is gorgeous but because of his kindness and he treats her with the respect she doesn't get from the Earl. Also the fact that they have so much in common, a love for music and poetry.

Serenya is ready to give up everything to have Jayden until she gets a vision. Serenya can see the future through visions and dreams. What she sees leaves her having to decide between what her heart wants and saving a man she cares for.

Jayden gets busy with a situation going on in Summerwind and Serenya is starting to go through some unexplained developments. A hunger for raw meat and blood. The Earl tells her she's going crazy just like her Mother did and that he will care for her like no other. But is he the right person to care for her?
Mysti Parker has really created a magical world with the Tallenmere series. Full of mystical creatures, adventure, battles between good and evil and lust and love that will overfill your heart. The characters are so in depth you make a emotional connection with them and that goes for the seconary characters as well. Very well written book and I hope you all grab a copy and get sucked into this series!

Oh wow, I really liked this story! Right from the beginning, I was enraptured in this creatively written fantasy world of Tallenmere. Everything was descriptive including the locations, and it felt like I was really there, so that's a plus for me, when I can easily visualize the setting. The story was intriguing; there's definitely a lot that happens from page one, and I felt each situation; conflict; good feeling moments, were presented where they should be, so I think everything flowed pretty well. This story had an edge of suspense as well, as when you think there is ease, something rapidly occurs, so there are little twists, that were incredibly written. The characters, all were described very well. I felt for Serenya, as she wanted someone to really love her for who she is, and she was not receiving that love from her husband, whom was an interesting character himself and watch out for him, as he has his own secrets that really shocked me, but in a good way, so look out for.... But back to Serenya; she has a lot on her plate: a loveless marriage, part of town gossip due to her birth defect that makes her wears gloves, and the fact that her Father is not her biological father. What really makes her feel that she has purpose is playing her piano, and Jaden Ravenwing, whom shares the same passion for music. I definitely liked him; he was a great, loving, and strong character, and seems like a perfect person for Serenya. You have to find out where their relationship leads, even though she is married, and learns, is confused by something about herself that she would never have imagined. Anyways, this was really a great book, and I am now a new fan of Mysti Parker. Her writing is incredible, and I hope you read this novel, and her others to see what I'm talking about. I recommend this story! :)

Actually 4.5

Serenya Crowe is half elf and doesn't know, who her father is. After her mother died giving birth to her, Serenya's stepfather takes Serenya and runs. Serenya and her stepfather settle in Summerwind, where her stepfather owns a tavern. Serenya has claw-like hands, that she keeps covered and can interpret dreams. When her stepfather falls on hard times, Serenya marries Sebastian, the Earl of Summerwind, but after five years of marriage with no children, he proves to be abusive. Then, Jaden Ravenwing enters the picture. Jaden is a secret agent who decides to settle in Summerwind, while he recovers from a broken marriage and a broken heart. When Serenya and Jaden meet, it is instant attraction, but the forces of evil have plans for Serenya.

SERENYA'S SONG is an enjoyable fantasy romance with complex world-building and intriguing characters. While it took me a little while to get into the story, once I did, I was hooked. Serenya isn't the kick-butt heroine, that I expected, but by the end, she shows great strength. Ms. Parker does a great job of showing the psyche of an abused woman. This part of the story felt really realistic and believable, even though, I wished Serenya would stand up for herself and leave her husband. Jayden is Serenya's perfect match, and he is determined to save her. Ms. Parker creates a picturesque world, that can be beautiful but, also, terrifying. I became involved with all the characters and the action and adventure kept me on the edge of my seat. Sebastian, whom I thought I would hate, left me a little conflicted. While his actions were reprehensible, they could be explained by some outside influences, and by the end, he did something that almost redeemed him in my eyes.

Concentrating on Jayden, who certainly got a bad deal in the previous novel, this is a moving and exciting story. Don’t let the fact that the characters are elves fool you, they’re as full of hatred, cruelty, jealousy, anger, bravery, gentleness, and love as anyone else.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and especially the use of the First Person Double POV narrative, which I’ve seen in only a few novels. The characters are likable and I especially found Sebastian, who might be called a pseudo-villain considering how he evolves through the story, a surprisingly sympathetic character. One doesn’t usually like antagonists, but there was just something about his later development… As for Jayden…he’s everything the hero should be, protecting the woman he loves and prepared to die for her. My only complaint (and this is somewhat of a Spoiler, but I have to say it, Ms. Parker)—why does he always seem to end up being stepfather to other men’s offspring? Perhaps that doesn’t give away the ending too much, for there’s a tremendous amount of supernatural happenings, deaths, and abductions, battles and choices to be made, before the ending, and even then, it’s a somewhat bittersweet one for some of the characters.

All in all, Serenya’s Song is a fine entry in this series, and the next will be quite welcome.

{my thoughts} - There are so many kind things I can say about this book. I enjoyed that it included for the most part all the characters from the first book. I also enjoyed getting to know another side of Lily and Jayden.

Serenya {renny} is not like others around her. She has claws that she was born with but hasn’t any idea why. Usually she keeps them hidden under a pair of gloves. She is married to the Earl and has a desperate need to want children of her own. Her husband Sebastian isn’t a kind fellow, he treats her poorly, forces her to engage in things she doesn’t want to an occasionally hits her.

Jayden meets her when he nearly runs her over with his horse. He takes her home and plans to get Lily to tend to her wounds, but Renny asks him to let her stay there for the night without being bothered.

This book tears at your heart strings. Renny finds out just how different she is from everyone else, and that her husband had been keeping secrets. She learns what it means to have a heart of love and just how far that can take you in life.

{reason for reading} - I was given a copy of this book by the author in return for an honest revi

Another fantastic story! It builds on from A Ranger's Tale, but could definitely be read as a stand-alone book.
This story picks up after Jayden leaves Caliphany and heads to his family's cottage in Summerwind. He meets a woman in the tavern who shares all his music and art appreciations and skills, and the chemistry quickly ignites.
Serenya has felt like a freak all her life, with claws for nails that she covers with gloves. She's married to the Earl, Lord Sebastian Crowe, and though she loves him, he's become cruel and she struggles with what she should and shouldn't do.
And now there's a mysterious portal on the Crowe Estate, so Jayden's LIO training kicks in, along with Lily's and her fiance Sammy's, and things quickly start happening.
We're given a glimpse at the beginning, of what it could be, of what Serenya's other parent could have been, but I never thought it would be so evil, and that she would have to fight so hard to control it. And I love the ending! Perfect, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one- Hearts in Exile!

I doubted heaven was within my reach until now, when two similar souls could make such beautiful music together and send my spirit soaring into the sky.

Serenya has the ability to interpret dreams and a birth defect that forces her to wear gloves. She’s endured small-town gossip and the cruelty of her husband, Sebastian, The Earl of Summerwind, but when Jayden comes to town, her world is turned upside down.

Having met Jayden in A Ranger's Tale, readers will know some of his back story and why he is new to Summerwind. Serenya's past (and present) is a tragic story, made worse when her tragic love is found in Jayden. What follows is a tale full of twists, inner turmoil, love, and lose befitting something out of Shakespear.

Love, adventure, a beautiful setting, strong characters--all reasons to pick up both Tallenmere books. The flowing language keeps reader's attention, speeding this fantasy/romance towards it's inevitable yet unpredictable conclusion.

Imagine raising a child alone after your spouse died that wasn’t your child. This is what happens to Serenya’s father. Her mother dies in childbirth and he is left to raise the child she was pregnant with when she met him. And the story is about Serenya and the part she plays in the big picture.

This story is a new take on the fantasy genre. The story covers spousal rape, spousal abuse, fornication, good vrs evil, soul bound mates, friendship, fighting, adventure, weddings, babies, and good ale. At times it is slow reading, but is generally an easy read.

I give this story 4 out of 5 clouds and would not recommend it for younger readers due to sexual scenes and description of spousal rape and abuse.

5***** A magical romance. Serenya is trapped in an abusive marriage. Something is happening to her that is frightening. Jayden is an officer of the crown working in secret. He comes to Summerwind to get over his broken marriage. This story is the 2nd in a series. You could read it as a stand alone but you will understand the characters a lot better if (like me) you have read #1 (A Ranger's Tale). We have all sorts of paranormal people here. Elves, Hada and humans living alongside each other. Then a portal appears and it looks like a doorway into hell. This makes the local Hada farmers nervous. What has come through or is going to come through that portal. There are incredible fight scenes and a complicated love story in this book. Its a great fun read that grabs you straight away and keeps you involved to the last page. Well done Mysti Parker. I look forward to book #3.

I loved this book more than the first one! Serenya is a beautiful character, and I felt so bad for her that she didn't find Jayden years ago before she married Sebastian. I really loved how in-depth the writer portrayed Jayden, especially after his role in A Ranger's Tale.

The plot kept me guessing at every turn, which is something I enjoy immensely. The love story was there, but it had enough excitement and adventure that I can't classify it in my mind as a romance. The ending totally had me going "wow."

I love the way Mysti Parker writes, and I can't wait for the next in this series.

For those who enjoy books that are similar in style with Tolkien and such, this is one book that you gotta pick to read.
I found the book to be both captivating and enjoyable to read. One that I was totally engrossed and was difficult to put down as soon as I began to read (Yes, it was a real page turner.)
The book may be a part of series but I was easily able to read the book (a bonus in this readers mind) as single.

This is a brief review. Longer review has been given to review site to use.

The book I received was an ARC for an honest review. Thanks.

I truly enjoyed this book. I've never read much fantasy/sci-fi, but this is one series I would recommend to others. It was a great book!

Sequel to the novel A Ranger’s Tale, which is hands down my favourite book of 2011 from independent authors, this book is set in the world of Tallenmere – a fantasy world of elves, magic and some incredibly crafted characters that feel real even in a fantasy setting. (see my previous review of A Ranger’s Tale on Read2Review here).

Serenya’s Song follows Jayden Ravenwing and his halfling assistant Lilly as they travel to Summerwind so that Jayden can forget his past. Having left Caliphany so that she can enjoy her life with Galadin, Jayden is happy enough to forget all about love. Until he meets the enchanting Serenya.

Alluring and pretty she may be, Serenya has a pretty tortured life. Forced to wear gloves due to a disfigurement and subject to an abusive husband, Serenya is haunted by some dark dreams – and a monstrous side of her that she is struggling to control.

Cue demons, a battle for the very safety of Tallenmere and lots of elfish sex! This is has some adult sex scenes, so not recommended for younger readers.

I was extremely excited to be given a copy of Serenya’s Song, given that I loved A Ranger’s Tale so much. I loved the characters and fact that the story focused more on relationship issues as opposed to the usual swords and sorcery that you normally got. I loved Caliphany as a headstrong female lead and liked Galadin as a hero as well. Jayden was actually my favourite character in A Ranger’s Tale and I did feel sorry for him by the end – so it was nice that he was the protagonist in this book.

Whereas A Ranger’s Tale had a somewhat loose (but still thoroughly entertaining) storyline, this book’s story is much more focused. It follows around a demon portal that threatens to bring a great evil to the world. Right from the opening prologue, I was hooked in on the story and the foreshadowing of the evil that was coming. It set it up quite nicely for the rest of the story to follow.

Whereas Jayden was a little shifty in A Ranger’s Tale, in this one he’s a much more likeable and sympathetic hero. Had I not read A Ranger’s Tale first, I may have found him a little bit too overly emotional – but because I knew his character very well, I was able to look past this. It was also great to see Lilly, the wise cracking halfling return again – she was a great source of humour for the book.

Serenya, the title character, I was in two minds about. Whereas Caliphany in the first book was a very strong and likeable character that was very strong willed and fleshed out, I felt that Serenya was a little too much like a damsel in distress for my liking. I wished she could have stood up for herself a little more. Her husband was such a complete and utter p**** that I just couldn’t see why she was still with him. That being said, once you learn about her past, you’ll understand why. And to be fair, Serenya does get a lot stronger as the book went on.

The “villains” of the piece are Lord Crowe (Serenya’s abusive husband) and Cevil Demarr, a shiftly looking bloke to say the least. Obviously, there is more to their characters than you first expect – but I won’t say why! Let’s just say that there was a great twist to these characters when it was revealed that actually took me by surprise.

Other new characters to be included are elves Shade and Zephyrus and paladins Sir Francis and Sir Robert. I don’t know why, but the paladins ended up being my favourite characters out of the new ones. They didn’t really stand out in terms of personality or impact on the story – I just felt they had the best magic out of all the characters. Maybe it’s just because I have a tendency to like knight/paladin type characters anyway, but I thought the paladins were just awesome. I would have liked them to be in the story a bit more.

It was also great to see Caliphany and Galadin return to aid Jayden in his quest to help Serenya. I would have liked to see more made from this though, given Cali’s and Jayden’s history – maybe even having a bit of a rivalry between him and Galadin. There was some, but more could have been made of this plot point in my opinion.

Now onto the main characters. Their story I thought was just brilliantly done. Like with Cali and Galadin in A Ranger’s Tale, I could really feel the love and the heartache between these two characters and wanted them to get together. I also liked the “animal” like lust that they felt for each other and felt that was described brilliantly as well. Admittedly, I thought that their first “bedding” happened a bit too soon in the story – but given that Serenya wasn’t always in control of her actions, this wasn’t an issue. The romance between them is very steamy and erotic, so fans of erotic fiction will certainly be happy with this one.

I couldn’t find any issues with the story, no plot holes or things that left me questioning why this happened. The book is a little bit longer than A Ranger’s Tale, but it is a joy to read. And it has some interesting plot twists that I felt worked. And the teaser at the end of it for the next book just wetted my appetite even more.

Whilst I think I preferred A Ranger’s Tale, I had been looking forward to Serenya’s Song for a long time and I was not disappointed. It was a fantastic read and a great successor to the last book. The demonic subplot worked well and acted as a great antagonist for the heroes to overcome and prove their love. Once again Mysti Parker proves that she is the queen in the Romantic Fantasy genre. My only problem is that now I have to wait for the next book!

For fans of Adult Romance/Fantasy Romance, check this one out and also A Ranger’s Tale. They are both fantastic novels that will get your hearts fluttering and your minds racing!

Serenya Crowe is trying to be the perfect wife to the Earl of Summerwind, Sebastian Crowe. With a birth defect and shady background, landing the most eligible bachelor and living in a mansion is pure luck…right?

Jayden Ravenwing (yes, it’s Jayden from A Ranger’s Tale), broken hearted by his divorce, decides to retreat into a small town. There, he meets Serenya and sparks start flying.

Add a creepy portal to hell in the mix and you’ve got one adventure with great promise.

I personally really enjoyed this story. It was a little harder for me to read than A Ranger’s Tale because I actually critted about 80% of it for Mysti. Even so, I still managed to get surprised regarding a particular twist and confuse the culprit.

What I liked most about this story: As opposed to A Ranger’s Tale, the plot is more focused. It’s actually sort of action-adventure with a very powerful romance plot, but it’s not the romance itself that seems to drive the story. And Mysti’s imagination runs wild. Lovely.

There is also extra world building. I already know the world of Tallenmere from the previous book, but more mythology and history comes through in this piece and I love that. We get more creatures, more spells, a deeper look into magic and some handy work from Jayden.

Sebastian is an awesome antagonist. He’s not the kinda person you love to hate, because, in my eyes at least, he wasn’t THAT despicable, but he’s in shades of grey. That’s what I loved about him – you know he’s a prick, but you can’t really hate him because you kinda get him.

Lilly was as kick-ass as ever, and I enjoyed finding out more about her and her people, the Haddo.

Caliphany and Galadin make a reappearance and show off their skills.

The atmosphere is also darker than ART, but me likey dark, so I enjoyed that. The setting is also superb and easy to picture.

Now, let’s move on to some criticism as well, right? Can’t be all kittens and rainbows.

Though I liked both Jayden and Serenya, the two of them are artsy, sensitive characters. The feistiest person in this book was Lilly. Now, as much as I love sweet romance and sensitive people, Serenya and Jayden together felt a bit like… sugar overdose, if you know what I mean. Mysti did handle this problem by giving them little love scenes together, and also by giving Serenya a…. okay, almost spoiled the story for you. Not gonna do that. So, yeah, bottom line is, they almost gave me diabetes.

There were also a few sections where I thought there should have been more of a reaction from characters. Like when Jayden and Caliphany meet again, and Jayden and Galadin come face to face – That part felt a little rushed to me, even if I agree that all characters were in a hurry.

Also, I didn’t get to feel much about Shade and Zephyrus before the end, and that was a shame.

So, yes, as you may notice, my second dive into the fantasy world of Tallenmere was very satisfying. The book was well worth the read and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next installment which will star one of the characters in Serenya’s Song.

Any attempts to not read through this book in one sitting may be futile.
At the novel's end, I felt exasperated at my insatiable lust for more. I'm afraid the author created an incredible sense of longing in me that I've rendered useless to control. Actually, after reading 'Serenya's Song', I have no desire, what so ever, to stop reading books of the adult paranormal/fantasy genre.

Do expect the graphics of the adult content to be explicitly written. I may have never had the desire to read books of an R rated (bordering X) before, but for me, there is no possibility of going back. This author has meticulously seduced a part of me with this book that has led me to enjoy more diverse territories. Perhaps her plot ventures further than the book itself? ;)

Jayden's role in 'A Ranger's Tale' as a secondary protagonist leave's the reader feeling admiration and inspired. Mysti Parker elaborated on the elf's passions, characteristics, history, and heart-break from the first book, creating a mesmerizing protagonist. Amplifying his attributes provided a solid back story setting.

After many years of trisks and broken heart, Jayden has finally found his perfect match. Though it may be love at first sight for he and Serenya, the trials are endless and hope is dwindling.

Serenya is married to, , man of power and an abusive nature. Harboring on her insecurities, her deformity and the possibility of being barren, he forces himself on her endlessly while using influence to cage her with fear. An escape route that doesn't come to a deadly end seems impossible at any attempts.

Jayden refuses to give up on her or his heart, especially when hell on earth is literally so near to her. Their chemistry when alone together is agonizing every time they are forced their separate ways.

Romance, however, is not all to expected of this extraordinary tale.
Eerie and unique mythological creatures are the cornerstone for this mystery. While Jayden sets out to unravel the mysteries behind the portal to hell before it is too late, Serenya's own personal mystery is the captivating force in the premise.

I won't elaborate on the last chapters of the book despite them being some of my favorite. The shocks and surprises are too praise-worthy to chance ruining.

The secondary characters on this novel are captured so well it cannot go without bring mentioned. Part of the unique charm to this series is you can expect to read roles from the protagonists in the previous book and in the third installment of the Tallenmere series.

It's even more beguiling that each book in the series uses already familiar characters. And with each new tale, the history of Tallenmere expands, creating what feels like a tangible, new world.

Tallenmere: A series that cannot disappoint!!!

This book is the second in a series about Tallenmere with the first book being A Ranger’s Tale. I have not read the first book but Serenya’s Song was written so well it was able to easily stand alone. I was taken into the story by the compelling beginning: A man brings his beloved wife, who is in labor delivering a baby that isn’t his, to the hospital. The father of the child is known only to the mother and she ultimately dies after giving birth to a daughter… with claws at the tips of her fingers. This young daughter is half wood-elf (as her mother is a wood-elf), half unknown species and is immediately in danger. Pursuers show up to kidnap the baby and her stepfather, a human named Douglas, has to leave his now deceased wife to flee with the baby to save her life.

So the beginning of Serenya’s life is, to say the least, less than perfect. She is then raised by her stepfather and endures the sting of a community who doesn’t really accept her. She has to wear gloves to hide her claws, she is being raised by a human, and her mother is dead and father unknown. As if this isn’t enough, she then marries a rich and handsome guy who the town loves – but who is abusive, demanding and does not appreciate her great musical gifts, her skills at interpreting dreams or the effort she puts into trying to make him happy.

The book goes on to introduce, beyond Serenya’s tale of woe, other characters with their own problems, their own personal demons to face and, unlike most romance novels – a much grander plot than just the romance itself. Tallenmere is in danger; there is evil lurking and secrets to be revealed. Besides finding love with Jayden, a character from the first book A Ranger’s Tale, and having to deal with how this affects her since she is married – both she and Jayden must also work together to defend Tallenmere. This book is filled with action, adventure, secrets, mystery, evil, love, and just about everything one could want in a fantasy romance story. There is no shortage of things to keep any reader interested.

Aside from the story itself, the language is also wonderful and the writing very well done. It is captivating and maintains the interest level. There are no lulls in the story or problems with consistency. Character descriptions are expertly written so that you feel you know the people; you get a real feel for what they are going through in the story. The background is even thoroughly explored with its own mythology, unique creatures and places.

If you enjoy the fantasy romance genre then definitely check this book out. It will keep you entertained throughout and make you want to read the next installment – Hearts in Exile.

I had no idea where this book was coming from prior to finishing the first book, A Ranger’s Tale, because there was no one in the first book named Serenya…until reading the epilogue. The epilogue of A Ranger’s Tale is set five years later, and Serenya’s Song takes place during that passage of time, so the epilogue kind of gives away a big detail from Serenya’s Song.

Serenya’s Song is kind of like a spin-off of A Ranger’s Tale: several characters return, and it follows a character’s life from A Ranger’s Tale.

In A Ranger’s Tale, Caliphany’s second husband, leader of the secret government agency L.I.O., has the king annul their marriage. Although his L.I.O. coworker Lilly does care for him, in the second book she has moved on and is engaged herself, so some amount of time has passed.

Jayden Ravenwing is broken and done with the world. He wants to reside in peace and fulfill the musician’s dreams within him. Little does he know the woman he knocks down with his horse one dark knight is the muse for his soul, his fine arts counterpart. and he will go to the ends of the earth for her.

But Parker has definitely added a twist and some serious mystery in the mix. Serenya’s father rescued her after birth, fleeing an unknown pursuer. She is now a grown woman and experiencing some very odd and unusual things. Her titled husband is controlling and manipulative, and insanely jealous. He knows something about what is happening to her, and is exploiting it while keeping Serenya controlled.

Jayden has found a very dangerous element that could cause massive destruction to Summerwind, and is keeping an eye on things in the area. Then some very strange things start occurring. He calls in for reinforcements and sets up an investigation, and things get even stranger.

I felt that the focus in this novel was more on Serenya than Jayden. She is an extremely compassionate, loving character. She is beautiful, a musician and artist, and can interpret dreams, but she as born with a distinct deformity: claws. I was disappointed throughout the novel at each point in which Serenya would not stand up to her husband, and took and responded to his forced advances. She lives as a titled woman in a beautiful house and pretends to have the perfect marriage, but that is all far from the truth. She is powerless, and eventually finds power (although, I don’t think she realized she was again being used and in essence, powerless), but makes a better choice. Her decision strikes me oddly given all of her giving in, but it is a decision that saves Summerwind and those she loves.
