Fourteen-year-old Maya sneaks out in her kayak before breakfast every day to check on a family of sea otters living in nearby Riley Bay. It's hard being an animal lover in a fishing family. The animals Maya loves threaten her family's livelihood, and Maya doesn't know if she can trust her family not to hurt them. She is determined to protect the sea otters, even if it means checking on them for the rest of her life. One morning, Maya discovers she's being watched. Who is it and what are they doing? Soon Maya has to trust someone as she gets caught in a dangerous race to save the sea otters—and her family's livelihood—from poachers.
I am a writer living in Victoria where I alternate between writing and teaching. I love writing about kids in action, kids exploring their world, and kids solving problems for themselves. In "Shimmy" I got to combine two of the things I love the most: dancing and writing, and in At The Edge of the World, I explored how kids become adults. I like to set my books in places I have lived, so that I have an excuse to visit some of my favorite spots in the world.
3 1/2 stars but rounded up because it was fast paced and hard to put down. This read as an older middle grade story and/or a younger young adult story.
Out of Season was a really cute story. It's definitely geared towards younger readers, but I still very much enjoyed it. I loved Maya's love and compassion for the sea otters, though at times her passion for keeping them safe did go a little too far.... Still, I would recommend this book as I think it was a fun read.
This is for the girl who loves pets and will grow up to work for PETA or be a vet tech. Not really what we are going for on the list. A NO vote for me.
