A terrifying storm lashed Sydney’s North Shore on June 21st, 1975. Boats were swamped and jetties smashed in what some claim was the worst storm to hit the coast for four decades.

In the midst of the chaos, Luke Romyn’s parents battled to get to a hospital to birth their baby boy. Normally their idyllic island cottage was a near-paradise; on this night the journey to the mainland in their tiny boat seemed like a passage through Hell. Their son was born near midnight, but part of the storm never left him.

When Luke reached fifteen years of age his father was killed while working in Fiji, leaving Luke and his mother alone. At times, the only things to get Luke through his grief were the stories playing out in his head, endless fantastical tales of lands both distant and near, with characters who would protect him from any tragedy.

At eighteen, Luke began working in nightclubs as a bouncer. Unbeknownst to him, this was simply the first step on a trek which would dictate much of his life from that point on. For over two decades since, Luke has worked in the security industry; from bouncing in some of Australia's roughest pubs and nightclubs to protecting Mickey Mouse and the Disney crew from the overzealous jaws of tenacious toddlers. He's been bodyguard for celebrities internationally and chased feral pigs and snakes from jungle sets on Steven Spielberg productions. Luke has traveled the globe and spent time in some of the most amazing locations the world has to offer.

This experience fuels the Australian writer’s ever-expansive imagination, and he pours it into his novels, combining fact with fiction, history with fantasy, delivering engrossing action-thrillers which leave fans gasping for more. Luke’s quick wit has seen his social media following explode, and he is currently one of the most prolific social media celebrities in Australia, with several hundred thousand followers across the internet.

Publishing his first book, The Dark Path, in 2009 saw it voted in the top 10 horror novels of that year, even though Luke denies ever intending the novel to be classed as horror. Luke Romyn is now one of the most popular indie authors in the ever-growing eBook market and personally completes everything from cover art to final formatting, working tirelessly with editors so as to refine the best stories possible for his readers. The results are international bestsellers you’re certain to love diving into. Hundreds of thousands of readers can’t be wrong.

I think it's my first DNF this year. I was struggling through it until I realised that life is too short to read books I don't enjoy. I loved the idea, but the whole story, the characters, the way it was told annoyed me.

Fantasy Epic

When modern day and futuristic day collide with the mythical Atlantis Greek Gods and battle the Titan’s the repercussions cause a domino effect of Badass Action.

My mind is still reeling over what I just read. Every fantastical creature across four different worlds was immersed into unstoppable killing machines used in war. Forget War War Z with Zombies or Harry Potter with magical moments with 3 headed dogs, dragons, and wizards. No, try a magical mystical modern day Australian Mcguiver instead that puts them all to shame.

Talbot the modern day archeologists and Wes the futuristic commando are the most adventurous, wittiest, and comical characters to ever get out of the most continuous combat action Battles I have ever read.

Every page had me on the edge of my seat reeling in each intense visionary scene into detailed memory. The unforgettable scenes still play out in my mind.

The writing is full of action with characters of ballsy attitudes and heroic comical demeanors. Every action or deed had me constantly falling in love with their cunningness over and over.

The author is brilliant in weaving in the devastating desolate dramatic war scenes going from shock to outright comical laughter which had me falling in love with the characters all over again.

The ending was perfect with time traveling to correct a wrong only to start a beginning of another journey.

This was such an enjoyable read and I can’t wait to read more by this author.

Excellent Read!

What if mythology isn’t myth? The ancient Greeks told fabulously detailed stories involving unbelievable creatures - monsters dominating all tales from that time. Were they just highly imaginative, or was their inspiration from somewhere else?

This is a question I have asked myself before too. I have long been a firm believer that where there is smoke there is fire. And in line with that I doubt all these creatures are things of myth. There has to be substance to the stories and a basis to the legends that have stood the test of time. Therefore I am grateful that someone has delved into this mythology and given us a fantastic story that will also stand the test of time. I studied ancient Greek history at university and love all areas of Greek mythology. Indeed it would not be inaccurate to say that of all the mythologies of all the civilisations in the world, current and extinct, none grab the attention quite the same way as that of the Greeks. Therefore, when I saw the title: Beyond Hades, I was already sucked in. But it is about what lies beyond the underworld of Greek mythology that we are dealing with here. Yes it is Tartarus.

It would suffice to say that many know of Hades and the River Styx where Achilles' mother submerged him to make his body invincible, though forgetting the backs of his ankles.. the place the Greeks believed you went when you were dead. But Tartarus is the place where they sent the wicked to punish or imprison them. As you can imagine Zeus was responsible for sending all manner of hideous beast there.

Enter Luke Romyn. He opens this world to us and educates us in depth at the horror that is Tartarus, the horror that dwells Beyond Hades. The US military has opened a gateway to this realm and unleashed these immensely powerful forces onto an unsuspecting world. The pace with which this guy writes is incredible, a real adrenalin rush. He throws us headfirst into his vision and delivers so many twists and turns at the speed of light, which never allows us a chance to take a moment to get our breath back.

I absolutely love the way he incorporates the legends of Atlantis and blends it with new elements to the myth of Olympus and the role Zeus played in protecting the world over several millennia. The characters, real and mythical, have real depth and you can’t help but care for them and experience their tribulations. It is a riveting and clever piece of fiction with too many twists to count that deserves global success. I reckon it will happen because the cream always reaches the top, in every aspect of life. The day some big shot movie producer reads this book, Luke Romyn will be a household name.

What if all the ancient Greek mythology was actually true ... sort of?

Luke Romyn takes up that idea in Beyond Hades, book 1 of The Prometheus Wars. It's an interesting story idea, and Romyn handles it in a way that showcases a rather extensive knowledge of Greek mythology.

Having said that, though, I wasn't impressed by the book. Romyn has a great story idea, but the execution of it (plot, character development, and dialogue) was average. It would have been better with some more editing, especially at the beginning, where the dialogue was so off-putting that I almost gave up entirely on the story.

The story got better in every respect as it moved forward, so that by the end of the book, I actually wanted to read the next book in the series.

Verdict: Overall it was okay. It's a great story, but it's not great literature.

Am I the only one who hated this book? It was recommended as a "if you liked this book, you'll like..." It was horrible. I love Greek mythology. This was just all about weapons and war talk and sucked big doodoo.

I was simply unable to get interested in this book. Read about half of it, but it requires an ability to suspend reality which is beyond my reach. Others may find it very enjoyable.

I had been looking forward to reading this book due to the combination of the cover art and the synopsis firing up my imagination, and to a reasonable extent it lived up to what I expected.

The story could be described as Indiana Jones meets Clash of the Titans, sprinkled with a bit of Doctor Who. There are two main characters who we follow, one being an archaeologist, while the other seems to be the embodiment of all the action figures played by Arnold Schwarzenegger but wrapped up in the persona of Crocodile Dundee.

It's a very entertaining fast-paced read, as the characters escape from one life-threatening predicament, only to land in yet another, as they encounter beings from Greek mythology and travel between the realms of Hades, Tartarus and Olympus.

It's a fun book, that would probably make an excellent action movie with its numerous mythological figures and action pieces, and as such there are a few times that the internal logic of the story becomes torturously strained, at which point it's best just to stop thinking and enjoy the ride.

The first thing that really annoyed me was the tiny print. I really hate it when the print is small like that as it stops my normal brisk reading speed and I have to slow down and take much longer over every word. It really does bug me and those with issues in their sight might find this a difficult book to read for that reason.

Getting on to the story, I liked the concept of the MC battling various mythology monsters. I figured it would be a fast paced monster battle type of story but I found it quite disappointing. To be fair, it was fast paced and it was full of monsters to battle but it still felt a bit bland and boring to me. It was such a shame because I wanted to like this book so much but I felt it just didn't deliver on the promise in the plot. I hate it when that happens!

You see, Talbot is a professor of archaeology and is told that his twin Thomas has been killed. The military want him to replace his brother on a top secret project and he gets no choice in the matter. Within minutes the first creature is attacking them. This is the problem for me-Talbot attracts the monsters to him so wherever he goes, monsters suddenly appear and he is spirited away to some other safe place...where he attracts monsters and they are attacked and someone saves him. And so on, over and over. He is a passenger in the book who is needing to be saved by others giving their life to get him to safety which never really exists. It is very repetitive and after a couple of chapters, this loses its appeal quickly.

Talbot is not a character that I greatly liked. I didn't dislike him but I didn't connect with him enough to be that bothered what happened to him. He was ok but not the most interesting MC to have. He also has little opportunity to interact with those looking after him when he keeps dashing off so another chance to develop his character is lost.

The monsters should have been really great but again it just didn't work. I think the problem I had is that Talbot is being rushed away from each battle so we don't see enough of what is happening, hearing about it from the odd survivor. It is strange to have a book with a ton of action leaving me feeling my attention wandering. I also felt that we were just being drip-fed the plot...just as we thought Talbot was getting a few answers, a monster would arrive and he'd run away to safety and the questions he wanted answering were just abandoned. I found it a bit frustrating that the monster attacks kept interrupting the information that Talbot and the reader wanted.

This paragraph contains a huge early plot spoiler so if you don't want to know, stop reading now and go to next paragraph. OK here it comes. The one character I did feel I liked was Chuck, assigned to protect Talbot. He had some personality about him and was the best bit of the book so when he died a few chapters in, I was angry and felt cheated. It was the last straw for me and I threw the book aside in disgust. Spoiler ends.

OK it is safe to read again if you had looked away. This seemed to have all the elements I thought I would like in a book-fast paced, plenty of action, mythology monsters...but it just didn't seem to work for me, which was a bit annoying. It is not a bad book and others might have a better time with it. However this is the second abandoned book for me by this author and I've decided that his writing is not the kind that I enjoy.

To call Luke Romyn’s “Beyond Hades” a thrill ride would be an understatement. His mashup of Greek mythology and science fiction took me to so many dimensions in such a hurry that the only metaphor I can come up with is riding a roller coaster. It’s quite a rush. When you close his book and the adventure is over, you may be left shaking your head and wondering, “What did I get myself into?”

The first book in the “Prometheus Wars” series (not to be confused with the recent Ridley Scott movie), “Hades” tells the story of Talbot Harrison, an archeologist who must step in to help the U.S. military close a portal to another dimension opened by his brother Thomas, an expert in Greek mythology who disappeared through the gateway, before the mythical creatures of Greek lore enter our world and destroy it. Backed by a military rendered ineffective against giant monsters unleashed upon the Earth, Talbot embarks on a journey through multiple dimensions, from Atlantis to Mount Olympus to Tartarus, to close the portal between dimensions before they merge into one and humanity perishes. Talbot falls in with Wes, an almost superhuman Australian Special Armed Services commando with a good aim, quick wit, and vulgar tongue. Together they fight to save the world before the monsters do them in.

The twists and turns in this story as it passes from dimension to dimension make for a ride that leaves the reader both enthralled and perplexed. The narrative left me in anticipation as it carried me through Romyn’s universe as I wondered what or where Talbot would go next. The heavy reliance on mythological creatures and name spellings I had never heard of – such as “Kharon” instead of the more common spelling Charon – left me confused at times. Eventually, I figured it out like a roller coaster rider when the car pulls into the station. Kudos to Romyn for doing his research and laying out a comprehensive, if not completely accurate, portrayal of Greek mythology. I’m looking forward to finding out if he did the same for Norse myths in the follow-up, “Slaves of Valhalla.”

Romyn’s thriller really is unbelievable with all of its fantastic imagery, but that’s not a criticism. It’s highly unlikely you will read about a garbage truck teleporter or a human putting Zeus in a chokehold in any other novel. Once you suspend belief, anything, including the transformation of Talbot from academic geek to warrior in mere days, is possible.

I give this book 5 stars and highly recommend it with one caveat. If you’re looking for anything other than a nonstop adrenaline rush akin to watching a bloody action-packed video game, be sure to check your bag at the door.

This book has been the hardest for me to review. It is such a great read I feared my enthusiasm would give spoilers. Many rewrites for this review I must confess to.

As a tremendous fan of Greek mythology I fully appreciated where the author was going with this story. If you think you're going to get some slow time between chapters think again. Luke Romyn takes his readers by the collar and yanks them right into the action from start to finish.

Beyond Hades takes you into time, travel and fierce danger all the while charming you with characters. You fear with Talbot while he races with time to save mankind and swear with Wes while fighting the enemies.

This book takes you not to just one world but a few, all the while unraveling Greek mythology with a fresh new twist.

Action to the end of the read. Heart racing and riveting. Beyond Hades takes you to hell and back, hell again and back and you won't want to get off the ride.

I loved this book and enjoyed it thoroughly not wanting to finish too quick. Each chapter gave me insight to well thought out characters and a plot that kept me turning the page and gasping for air along the way.

Get your read on and get it with Beyond Hades, here is how:

I have been fortunate to read 5 star books one after the other the past couple of months, 3 in a row. What makes it 5 star... well heck any book that makes me miss train stops, ignore calls, catch my breath and feel sadness when I realize it will end soon - has pretty much earned several stars. Check out my reviews for the previous 5 star books. I hope this luck in selecting fine books remains.

Stay tuned for my next read.Beyond Hades

This book is nonstop, relentless action. We have a large base of mythology, mixed with conspiracy, action, and suspense. Just when you think a break is coming where you can breathe, it jumps right back into high gear.

The story is plot-driven, with the little character development coming in pieces throughout. Normally, this is a problem for me since I prefer character-driven fiction. But the plot here held me captivated. Romyn is able to paint a vivid portrait of the mythical creatures and the worlds they inhabit. Occasionally a bit of dialogue would have me laughing amidst the chaos, and Wes was by far my favorite character.

This is one of those rare, truly unique books. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

This is a great book if you enjoy mythology and fantasy. It's like Douglass Adams, Tolkein, and Rowling rolled into one book. My main issue was the depth of the characterization and the pacing of character development. We never know what makes the main characters tick until midway through the book. We never find out why the main character is able to read the Eldar tongue or a target for all the creatures of Hades. The premise is fertile, but the details are not worked out well. Still a good read if you can get past the barely credible plot (which simply moves from catastrophe to catastrophe).

Beyond Hades (The Prometheus Wars #1) Luke Romyn
Fast paced intense read. Mythological creatures are thought to be just that, a myth, but what if they really do exist. What would happen if the real world meets up with the mythical creatures from legends. That is what Luke Romyn brings about in this fascinating thrilling read. Filled with adventure and nail biting moments. An excellent fantasy/adventure. I recommend to adults as well as Y/A readers.

Beyond Hades is an imaginative blend of urban fantasy and mythology that grabs the reader from the first page. Be prepared to read this one in a single sitting. Luke Romyn brings boring historical characters to life with distinct and believable personalities. However, this book is more than just nonstop action and adventure. At every turn, just when the reader feels secure knowing where the story is headed, Mr. Romyn throws in a twist that leaves the head spinning with pleasure. Beyond Hades left this reader exhausted yet thrilled and satisfied.

Great book from Mr. Romyn. I discover this book in a promo made by Amazon that gave this book in Kindle for free. I remember reading the synopsys and think "That´s a good story", but none of my thoughts prepared me for the great book revealed once I started to read it. It took me 2 days to read, even in pejudice to my new born child (sorry Sarah), wife and work. It was worth it. If you like great fiction/mistery/twiting plot/mythology book you got to get your hands in this book.

Looking forward for the second one. Hey Mr. Romym...any idea for time of publishing the sequel?

This is the first book I've read that covered Greek mythology like it did. I really enjoyed it. I loved going in a new direction. I always know that if it's a book from Luke Romyn, it's going to be great. I love the characters, though I was sad some didn't last long in the book. Constant action, and very descriptive. It was easy to form the scenery in my head, making the creatures even more realistic. Another success for Luke! Keep them coming. I can't get enough.

Overall this was an enjoyable read. It was great to read a book that wasn't full of vampires and werewolves, witches and wizards which most authors seem to be fixated on right now.

Luke brought the Greek myths to life, literally.

There are some editing issues with the book, and the first half lacked detail. It was fast paced which may have something to do with the detail issue, but there were sections that could have been glorious with the addition of more detail.

The story was easy to follow even with all the twist and turns. I look forward to reading more works by Luke Romyn.

Luke Romyn is a tremendous new talent. He paints vivid pictures of Greek mythology creatures and happenings...well, Beyond Hades!! I'd read his The Dark Path, and the two are similar just in the fact of his graphic descriptions, but this one is a very ingenious plot line with scenes flashing in my mind, page by page, just wonderful! Nice job on this one!

Ugh. I wanted to like this book. I loved Greek mythology and the combination of this and adventure in a current time period really attracted me. Unfortunately, it read like some ambitious high scholl student wrote it. I really tried to finish it, but finally gave up the ghost at about 80%.

Got about four chapters in and had to quit. The idea is neat, but the characters seem one-dimensional and hackneyed. Might get better, but I'd rather re-read Dan Simmons' "Hyperion" than this. The Percy Jackson series is better than this, which would go straight to DVD if it were a movie.
