Voor mijn zussen
Na een zonnige jeugd op het landgoed Summerleigh worden de vier zusjes Maclise in hun streven om hun ambities te vervullen geconfronteerd met de hardere kanten van het leven. De mooie egocentrische Iris is ervan overtuig dat ze zal trouwen, maar wordt verpleegster. Het is de stille Marianne die de liefde van haar leven vindt. Clemency, de blijmoedige derde dochter, blijft thuis om voor haar bedlegerige moeder te zorgen. De eigenzinnige Eva droomt van een schilderscarrière, maar raakt verstrikt in een verhouding die even gepassioneerd als uitzichtloos is. Voor mijn zussen is een prachtige, meeslepende roman tegen de achtergrond van de Eerste Wereldoorlog die zien hoezeer vrouwen moesten vechten om zich te ontdoen van de knellende banden der conventie.

Judith Lennox hat einen fesselnden Gesellschaftsroman geschrieben, der die Lebensgeschichte von 4 Schwestern aus gutbürgerlichem Hause zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts erzählt.
Obwohl die Schwestern denselben sozialen Hintergrund haben verlaufen ihre Leben sehr unterschiedlich, wodurch eine Vielzahl ganz unterschiedlicher Themen gestreift werden können: Von der Rolle der Frau in der damaligen Gesellschaft über den 1. Weltkrieg bis hin zum Kolonialismus erzählt die Autorin durchaus kritisch aber dennoch sehr gut lesbar und spannend von der damaligen Zeit.
Dies ist das erste Buch von Judith Lennox, das ich gelesen habe. Initial hatte ich ein wenig eine Schmonzette befürchtet, wurde aber sehr angenehm überrascht. Meine volle Empfehlung für diesen Roman.

Seven siblings must all overcome their own troubles to find what they are looking for.
Especially the sisters Marianne, Iris, Eva and Clemency.
Marianne must find a way out of a marriage she should never have agreed to and escape the wilderness of Ceylon and the rage of her husband Lucas.
Iris must overcome her own vanity to find he love that was right in front her before it's too late.
Eva escapes the family to pursue her dream of becoming a painter, but after meeting the Bohemian painter Gabriel Bellamy she forgets her own ambitions for love.
And Clemency, left alone at home to look after mother with no prospect of marrying or escaping the family house Summerleight.
Mix in three brothers, each completely different in character,mother that has taken to bed for the past 11 years and father who doesn't say sorry in fear of loosing his own pride and this makes fora pretty good read.

This is the story of the four Maclise sisters, Iris, Marianne, Eva and Clemency. Daughters of a wealthy manufacturer, the sisters lead a privileged life at their home Summerleigh, each of them harbouring their own hopes and dreams for the future. However, it is a world on the brink of change, and with the gathering clouds of war, nothing will ever be quite the same.
Another sumptuous read from Lennox, who always manages to completely transport me back in time, her novels reading like a Sunday evening period drama to lose oneself in. With its story of 4 sisters, this could but put me in mind rather of Little Women, and certainly the bond of sisterhood shines through in this book as in the latter, though the plot and characters are quite original.
Each of the sisters is well depicted, pretty if somewhat self-centred Iris, reserved and sensitive Marianne, strong-willed Eva and dependable Clemency. We follow each of them as they strive for independence, following their loves and losses, and watch each in turn as they blossom into mature young women, learning from their mistakes, shaped by their trials and tribulations, yet each emerging stronger.
I enjoyed all the sisters' stories, none of them quite ending up in the place they would have envisioned themselves at the start, however, I think by the end of the novel, Iris was perhaps my favourite. I liked her no nonsense attitude, and the fact that there was so much more to her than the trivial party girl she appeared at first. Furthermore, I found her and Ash's relationship the most satisfying of all the sister's romances, perhaps because it felt the most developed.
The majority of the book is set in England, though parts of the story take place in Ceylon, and I enjoyed Lennox's descriptions of life amongst the expatriates here as well as her lush descriptions of the island itself.
As always Lennox writes with wonderful attention to historical detail, and I liked the transition in this novel from the idyllic opening chapters at Summerleigh, where she depicts the Edwardian era in all its nostalgic glory, and then contrasts this with shifting political and social landscapes, particularly seen through the eyes of Eva and Iris in London in the following years, and then later with the outbreak of war.
All in all an absolutely delightful read, with four well developed sisters at its heart.

This story of people, life and their problems is set pre WW1 and follows the path of four sisters as they try to find meaning and love in a time when Britain, soon to be at war, is stubbornly denying women their voting rights. I give this book 4 stars and file it on the same shelf as a Maeve Binchy novel.

È uno di quei libri di cui già da domani non mi ricorderò più nulla. All'inizio la lettura era anche piacevole, per cui mi sono detta: ok è leggerino, ma si legge con facilità e può essere valido anche solo per questo. Poi però la lettura di questo romanzo ha iniziato a pesarmi perché mi sembrava che non arrivasse da nessuna parte. C'è una sequela di sfortune che si abbattono sui componenti femminili e maschili di questa famiglia che sinceramente stancano ben presto. E poi devo dire che i personaggi non mi sono risultati simpatici per niente. All'inizio era solo Lillian quella che non tolleravo per il suo egoismo estremo. Nello scorrere delle pagine, però, mi sono diventati tutti antipatici. Marianne fa delle scelte assolutamente incomprensibili per me. Riesce a complicarsi la vita che è una meraviglia. Iris trascina per tutto il libro questa mezza storia con Ash senza di fatto concludere granché. Eva si lega a questo artista donnaiolo incallito e, per i miei gusti, ci mette troppe pagine a capire che è meglio perderlo che trovarlo. Uno così è da rispedire al mittente in cinque secondi netti! E poi c'è la sorella più insulsa di tutte, Clemmy, che fa la badante della madre per quasi tutto il libro, salvo poi scoprirsi improvvisamente lesbica. I fratelli non sono certo più apprezzabili, a partire da James che ha paura a dire a suo padre che si è sposato...No comment! Evitate gente.

A very good surprise !
I started to read this book and I was quite sure I was not going to finish it. The first chapters are very slow with not much going on : but as the story begins to unravel you grow attached to the personality of each sister and really can't put the book down.
I definitely recommend it if you're looking for a good family saga.

Eine sehr gute, historische Geschichte über diese Schwestern, die sehr unterschiedlich sind und ihre Erfüllung - jede für sich- suchen. Dabei kämpfen sie auch mit Hindernissen, die "heutzutage" nicht mehr, bzw. jedenfalls wesentlich weniger problematisch sind, da sie -vorallem in der westlichen Welt- eher an anderen Dingen als am "Machtwort" von männlichen Familienmitgliedern oder Ehemänner scheitern und sich nicht bei Freundschaften und Beziehungen "standesgemäß" orientieren muss, bloß um einen Ruf zu wahren.
Da sieht man auch, dass wir Menschen heute wesentlich mehr Entscheidungen treffen können ohne manche Hürden, bzw. Konsequenzen nehmen und fürchten zu müssen, - wie man hier oft merkt- gerade als Frau unglaublich waren. Dazu noch das Verhalten einiger Männer, das auch 'negativ' "einfach zu ihrem Naturell gehört", während eine Frau dann "von Grund auf schlecht" ist. Da hat sich in der Gesellschaft echt viel getan, zum Glück.
Ich habe dieses Buch sehr gerne gelesen. Es war, wie als könnte ich die jungen Damen ein Stück begleiten können.

Off to a veery slow start, this book did pick up pace and captured me eventually. It was a good story, following four very different sisters trying to find their way in life stumbling from a well-situated life into the chaos of WWI. One of them makes it as far as Sri Lanka (then Ceylon), but the only thing each of those extremely different sisters want is love. Another thing they have in common is fear. I enjoyed their stories and developments but to be honest this book had so many really tragic moments it got a bit heavy and frustrating at times and as many other reviews say - the end is a bit too open, but I suppose that is very realistic. So is the tragedy especially for a book taking place during WWI, but still there could have been slightly less of it.

Ich bin doch sehr positiv überrascht. Ich hatte einen klassischen "Historischen" Roman erwartet, der versucht diverse romantische Szenen mit einer relativ unglaubwürdigen historisch angelehnten Geschichte zu verbinden. Aber genau das war es NICHT. Ganz im Gegenteil, die "romantischen Szenen" (wie ich sie hier mal nenne) werden nahezu komplett ausgeblendet, wenn nicht für die Darstellung eines Charakters notwendig. Und die Geschichte bzw. Geschichten sind sehr interessant und nicht ganz so abwegig. Es gibt Höhen und tiefen und nicht nur eine Heldin die über allem steht. Ich werde definitiv nochmal einen Lennox lesen, das steht fest.

in dit boek weet de schrijver njet wat ze met haar vehaal wil vertellen. Het gaat over 4 zussen allemaal verschillend. Waarvan 1 in het eerste hoofdstuk al verliefd word, in het tweede gaat trouwen, bet 4de haar man verliest en dan de domme keuze maakt om te hertrouwen met iemand waarvan ze niet houd. De andere zussen volgen hun talenten maar falen elke keer. En de schrijver accepteerd veel ontrouw in het boek.
tot slot gaat het over de achtergrond de eerste wereld oorlog die de schrijver het hele boek lijkt te zijn vergeten en in de laatste 2 hoofdstukken het plotseling naar voren haalt.

This is not my genre at all, I got this book as a gift - but in the end, I couldn't put it down. I really liked the four sisters, and thought their lifes, struggles and wishes were extremely relatable. The ending felt rushed and some stories were left unfinished, but other than that I was very happy with the book!

Wow, I loved this book. It was an epic historical romance about the lives of four sisters. This book was really emotionally written. It had me so interested that I had to finish it fast so I could know how it would all turn out for the Mclisse sisters. I can't wait to read more books by writer Judith Lennox.

So I really loved this. I felt really emotionally invested in the characters. The War doesn't come into play until the last 20% or so, and then I was actually nervous about reading as I was worried about who would/wouldn't make it through. I thought a couple of loose ends still needed to be tied up, but that's my only real complaint.

Super story of the old fashioned type
Thoroughly enjoyable story of times past. Four sisters grow up to find love, disappointment, companionship and despair in their separate worlds but keep returning to their family home and to each other.
I enjoy Judith Lennox’ books very much. Shades of AJ Cronin and Howard Spring. Excellent story telling and good characterisation

Interessanter Familienroman, 4 Schwestern und 3 Brüder, die auf einem Landsitz im Süden Englands wohnen und dessen Vater eine Eisenfabrik besitzt, die Mutter ist ständig "leidend". Es spielt in der Zeit um die Jahrhundertwende und anfangs ist alles ziemlich dekadent und Frauen feindlich, was sich im Laufe der Zeit aber ändert.

It’s been a novel full of life, love, faith and family affairs. Even though mistakes, regret and unhappiness cannot be shuddered from reality nor from this story, it has been a wonderful time spent on this book to see where trust, sisterhood, family connection and any good and trustful relationship can take us.

This book is a fabulous ‘read.’ When I reached the last chapter I began to feel so sad. Sad for a lost generation of young men who never came home and sad that this beautiful story was ending. A truly super book.

This was very meh. Too many characters and perspectives, and all the main characters made terrible choices. The timeline was hard to follow with how much it jumped around from character to character. Not the worst thing I've ever read, but I was hoping for something better.

Une saga familiale qui se déroule de 1908 à 1917. On suit le destin de la famille Maclise, et plus particulièrement des quatre soeurs : Iris, Marianne, Eva et Clémence. L'ensemble se lit avec plaisir, les personnages sont intéressants (j'ai particulièrement apprécié les destins d'Eva et Marianne, ainsi que l'évolution d'Iris). J'ai aimé la plongée dans la société du début du XXe siècle, notamment sur la place des femmes.
Le début est un peu lent à démarrer et j'ai été assez frustrée par la fin du roman que j'ai trouvé un peu abrupte et qui laisse de gros points d'interrogation sur le destin d'Eva et de Clémence notamment.

Für diese Geschichte braucht man einen langen Atem und Durchhaltevermögen. Judith Lennox baut ihre Geschichte bis ins kleinste Detail aus und versucht alles sehr bildlich zu erzählen. Die Schwestern in dieser Geschichte könnten nicht unterschiedlicher sein. Auch ihr Leben verläuft so ganz anders als sie es sich jemals vorstellten. Viele Schicksalsschläge müssen sie hinnehmen und versuchen zu verarbeiten. Nicht immer gelingt es ihnen, aber sie geben niemals auf. Die Familie wird verstreut durch die Männer, die Einfluss nehmen, durch den Krieg und die Liebe. Und doch versuchen sie zusammen zuhalten.
Juliane Köhler spricht die verschiedenen Charaktere und versucht jeder Schwester eine ganz eigene Note zu geben. Sie schafft es den Hörer an die Geschichte zu binden. Jedoch leistet sie aus meiner Sicht teilweise Schwerstarbeit, denn Judith Lennox lässt auch die Farbe der Tischdecke nicht aus, um die Geschichte auszubauen. Für mich war die Geschichte phasenweise zu langatmig und zu detailliert. So manches Mal hoffte ich auf ein rasches Ende und Dank Juliane Köhler habe ich auch durchgehalten. Die letzte CD gewinnt an Tempo und dann geht es (gefühlt) Schlag auf Schlag. Dieses Tempo hätte auch den anderen CDs gut getan, denn manchmal ist doch weniger mehr.

Das war mein erster Frauen- und Gesellschaftsroman und es ist nicht so mein Ding. Ich kann nicht einmal genau erklären, woran es lag, aber auf irgend etwas habe ich die ganze Zeit gewartet und es kam nicht. Aber mal zum Buch:
Die vier Schwestern (Iris, Marianne, Eva, Clemency) sind jede für sich gesehen schon außergewöhnliche Persönlichkeiten, über die man vermutlich schon einzeln ein Buch schreiben könnte. Alle vier zusammen genommen sind eine abwechslungsreiche Mischung an Charakteren und deren Gefühle. Aber es dreht sich dabei nicht bloß um diese Vier, sondern auch um ihr komplettes Umfeld, wie Familie, Freunde, berufliche Erfahrungen etc.
Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass sich die ersten 3/4 des Buches total hingezogen hatten. Erst zum Schluss hin wurde es richtig rasant. Im Gegensatz zum Anfang flog der Schluss nur so vorüber. Zumindest für den Schluss hätte ich mir ein paar mehr Seiten gewünscht (und den Anfang etwas kürzer).
Noch etwas, das mich gestört hat, war, dass zwischen den Schwestern so schnell hin- und her gesprungen wurde. Da hat man sich gerade schön in die Geschichte von z. B. Eva eingelesen, da war man plötzlich bei Iris und bis ich überhaupt gemerkt habe, dass wir bei ihr sind, waren wir schon bei Clemency (o.k. ein bißchen übertrieben habe ich jetzt, aber die Wechsel waren mir eindeutig zu schnell).

Une belle découverte,un beau roman sur la vie et le destin de quatre soeurs.A travers la lecture leurs vis,leurs choix je me suis beaucoup souvenue d'un autre roman que j'ai aimé et que j'aimerai toujours: "Les quatre filles du Docteur March" de Louisa May Alcott.Marianne,Clémence,Eva et Iris auront chacune une vie différente,j'ai beaucoup aimé Eva et son parcours je détestais Iris puis j'ai eu un coup de cœur pour son engagement.Ce roman est long avec parfois de long passages qui pourront sembler inutile à certains mais j'ai retrouvé dans le style de Judith Lennox le charme de Jane Austen,c'est un long que l'on range dans la bibliothèque en sachant qu'on le relira.Pour ma part ce petit bijou est un chef d'ouvre que j'ai dévoré,après avoir lu le résumé je ne pensais pas que j'aurai autant été séduite mais c'est une merveille

Klar gabe es in diesem Buch typische und vorhersehbare Elemente (Er ist in einen rostigen Nagel getreten? Was wird wohl passieren?!), aber es war trotzdem mitreißend. Durch die vier Schwestern mit je ihrer eigenen Geschichte (und auch die drei Brüder durften Mini-Handlungsstränge haben) gab es viele (Liebes- und Identifikations-)Möglichkeiten. Gut war, dass es nicht das klassische Mann-liebt-Frau-sie-heiraten-früh-Schema der Zeit war, das beschrieben wurde. Und obwohl es auch gut und vielleicht umso realistischer war, dass nicht alles Friede-Freude-Eierkuchen war, war es doch teilweise etwas deprimierend. Mehr Happy im End wäre nett gewesen.

My third Judith Lennox book, and as with the other two, I really enjoyed it. I love family saga's, and this one set in the early twentieth century is a great story of a large family and their inter-twining and separate lives. The characters are well written and believable, and their emotions come to life. The description of one characters grief was so well written, it made me quite emotional!! I can't wait to read another Judith Lennox soon.

Eventhough I normally don't like books that are set before the 1980's this one which plays at the begining of the 20th century really got me interested. Each sister has her own incredible ccharacter and it's really interesting how the author build these relationships.

A really interesting book on different women in the early 1900 century; their life and love before and during World War I, and all the changes they must go through, -although it is a frustrating ending.

I needed an easy to read book for the weekend and this book fulfilled that need. A family of 4 sisters, 3 brothers, an always sick mother (is she really, or just manipulative) and hard working, stubborn father gives enough stories to fill a book of over 600 pages.
