Skinwalkers Trilogy #1

Bad Moon Rising

Rate this book
When love takes you to the threshold of ecstasy … and death.

Mya Reynolds lives a painfully ordinary life - that is until she makes the mistake of looking into the eyes of the Sinapu alpha, discovering an all consuming love that threatens to destroy her and everyone near her.

David Bray has sworn to do everything he can to protect the people. But when his duty requires that he kill the one woman that has managed to capture his heart, he is torn between love and what he knows must be done.

The skinwalkers are an ancient race - practitioners of the dark arts and the living vessels of demons. They have the ability to take the shape of animals and humans alike, and never for good.

The Sinapu are the earthly incarnations of the wolf spirit. It is their duty to protect the heart of the people, but the skinwalkers want access to the heart and will stop at nothing to get it.

When Mya Reynolds agrees to take an internship with the tribal police, she unwittingly steps into the middle of an epic battle between good and evil, but too often the lines are blurred and she cannot be sure whom she can trust.

I felt like I was listening to a teenager's fanfiction. The overall idea wasn't bad, I liked that it incorporated aspects of Native American lore with the skinwalkers, but the writing needs improvement. Some of the things the characters said seemed stilted or odd, like you wouldn't say that in real life. The way we got the information was in info dumps, which made it hard to follow and I would have liked some more backstory about Mya's birth, but maybe that will come in the next books. It wasn't terrible overall, just maybe could have used an editor to go over it. The narrator also didn't help things, she sounded like she's never read an audiobook before and didn't do a great job with inflection and different voices. Maybe physically reading it would have been better.

I'm loving the Native American slant...

Mya wants to become a policewoman and goes to Arizona to spend the summer with her uncle Donny to gain practical experience. When the killing started, her uncle started telling her about Skinwalkers, Sinapo, and Dineh; all connected to the Navajo reservation.

Mya is having a hard time handling her uncle not giving her straight answers to her questions. When Donny says anything to Mya about the murders or about her own life, it always seems to revolve around their small town and the legends of the Navajo.

Knowing that her life is about to change in a dramatic way, Mya wants to get information from David. David is mysterious and illusive, and somehow connected to the legends as well. However, David keeps giving her the run around too. Mya is confused about a lot of things, but
she knows that David is connected to her and whatever is going on with the murders.

Mya's confusion about who she is, what she has to do with the murders, and her connection with David is starting to get to her, and with what Trent has told her, she is starting to think she may finally get some answers.

David knows exactly who Mya is and what she means for him; and he knows that staying away from her is going to be impossible. He has a sacred duty that he must uphold or the people will suffer. But sense Mya is more like her mother, does that change the prophecy?

Mya is supposed to be killed, but will David allow that to happen regardless of what the prophecy says?

I enjoyed the way this story was told. They're quite a few twists that are well placed within the story to create shock, anger and an undying love. I only noticed one or two typos. Other than that, the book was great.

If you like the paranormal and Native American lore, then you will enjoy this book a great deal. Lorraine, you've done a great job.

I love books involving werewolf romances and this one had that and another favourite topic of mine... Native Indians. Despite that, I couldn't get a feel for the book and I don't know whether or not I will be reading the 2nd book in the trilogy.

The romance in this story is between Mya and David. Mya has an interest in becoming a criminal profiler and decides to spend the summer on her uncle Donny's reservation in Arizona completing an internship with the reservation police. Shortly after she arrives there are two unexplained deaths, but it is unclear if the men were attacked by wolves or if they are the result of murder. As part of the police enquiry, Mya meets David Bray who is one of the Sinapu, a revered and elite group within the Navajo tribe. Since arriving, Mya has been told by various people that she shouldn't be on the reservation and that her life is in danger although no-one will tell her what or who she is in danger from.... Sinapu or Skinwalkers, not that she believes in the existence of the latter.

The suspense element of the story is quite well told and the twists and turns continue throughout the book, but I didn't find myself anxiously turning the page.

Sad, heart felt and cliffhanger

Part one is mostly Maya not believing in the myths of skinwalkers and wolf shifters. Maya is apart of the evil skinwalkers plans to take down the wolf shifter's alpha priest , by being a maybe walker, specific demon to a kidnapped woman. She was created to do more harm then good but the walkers planes changed when they find out they can't control her. David rescued Maya from the Walkers when she was ten and now years later he can still feel the connection towards Maya and his heart as well as hers will be connected even more with their love but the walkers plans are still in play and it's up to David and Maya and their small trusted family will have to stop the killings of many people's lives.

this is a great story. The drama of it is so high you can almost taste it. Love the different spin of the story set on a reservation with the added excitement of devil spirits, skinwalkers & phantoms. The characters are woven intricately together and their individual charisma and magic radiates through the pages. Can't wait until Friday to buy the next one - this is definitely a book worth reading....

It wasn't a bad story, but it had really bad characters and it was poorly written.
The author didn't manage to convey the atmosphere of the book and the heroine is a typical example of TSL (too stupid to live). Also, for an Alpha shapeshifter, the hero really needs to grow a backbone.
All in all, I wasn't interested enough to read the next one in the series.

Native America lore is woven into this murder mystery romance that will keep you turning the pages and wondering who to believe. Not a stand alone novel, though it does stop at a good point to make you want to read the next book in the series!

We all want to fall in love and have that love fulfilled. However it can also lead to hate and pain. This story reminds me of Romeo and Juliet together they are stronger than they are apart. Love finds away of coming together even through desperate times.

Oh my word. All in the name of research! And still, not a very interesting skinwalker story! And a such a "bad romance"! But, it kept me entertained anyway.

I ended up really liked the story, not a fan of the narrator at all! I will probably try the 2nd book in the trilogy, but not sure if it will make my list of must reads anytime soon.

Painful. Half of the book could have been cut if someone would have the female lead her history.
