I've got the Samovar edition, which contains only four of the tales.
And now that I've read these, I want to read his other work.

1. The Tale of Time Lost: four kids find themselves inexplicably old. One of them finds out that it's the work of four magicians who regained their youth by siphoning time from kids who were wasting it. The only way to reverse it is for all four kids to come together and rewind the magical clock at a precise time. I'd love to see a more elaborate version of this story. The kids find each other very quickly, and we only really get to know one of them.

2. Two Brothers: Older brother and Younger brother don't get along, mostly because Older wants to be left alone and read his book. Right before New Year Mother and Father leave to get a tree, making Older promise to take care of Younger. The first two days go well, but on the third day the brothers fight and Older locks Younger out of the house. He means it as a joke, but he gets lost in a book and by the time he remembers five hours have gone and Younger vanished. Older is devastated and unsure of what to do.
Mother and Father return, and Father sends Older to search for Younger. Older walks and walks until he reaches a forest that's frozen through. In the forest he meets Great-grandfather Frost, who is pleased that Older wants to be left alone, and intends to adopt him. He makes Older take small animals and freeze them before the frozen fire in his palace. He also tells Older that Younger is trapped in hall 49 of the palace. Older finally comes up with a scheme to free Younger and the animals: when Frost goes out, Older collects wood from the living forest and burns a real fire by the door to hall 49. He also defrosts the animals and hides them.
But finally Frost finds out and destroys the fire. However, the small army of animals Older had rescued band together and steal the key from Frost. Older opens the door and finds Younger, who's frozen through. Older takes him and runs away with his animal friends. They make it to the living forest, but Older trips and breaks Younger. He's devastated and cried himself to sleep. Meanwhile, the animals put Younger back together and he thaws out. The boys return safely home and everything is wonderful. The moral of this story is that you should always send your small children to do impossible tasks in the forest. They'll conquer ancient elements and bring home an organized animal army.

3. The New Adventures of Puss in Boots: Puss in Boots is bored, so he catches a ride on a boat where he becomes friends with the captain and crew. They meet another boat, whose captain is a woman and married to the captain of the boat Puss is on. Puss is very surprised to see a woman captain, but there are bigger problems. Namely, the captains' son is a complete monster, and they don't know what to do. Puss decides to investigate and finds out that an old Toad is cursing the son. He gets the kids to help him corner the Toad on the roof, but almost fails. The son summons the adults and they help banish the Toad. Puss gets rewarded for child endangerment.

4. The Scattered Magician: He turns a horse into a cat, but it still has the power of a horse, so it's OK that he forgot he couldn't turn it back for a month. Then he turns it back, but without giving notice, so the horse breaks the family's oven. But the wizard rebuilds it. Most importantly, the horse adopts certain cat behaviors and becomes best buds with other cats?
