What an endearing story. It was a sweet listen and I really liked the main character Kit.

She was an orphan and lived with her grandfather in Barbados until he passed away. Alone, she escaped her home and from the 50 year old man she was going to be forced to marry.

Kit arrived at her aunt and uncle’s home in Connecticut, but was a very unwelcome guest by them and her two cousins. After a rough start she met the “witch of blackbird pond,”yet she wasn’t a witch at all. Hannah Tupper was the kindest, loneliest, elderly lady. She and Kit became fast friends and taught a young, abused, little girl named Prudence how to read.

The threesome, along with a young sailor named Nathaniel (Nat), who occasionally visited, became fast friends and at the end of the book Nat and Kit married one another. She left her family who had become dear to her and joined her husband on his new ship.
