Life is easy when you have everything you want; great friends, a boyfriend who loves you, a happy family that supports you, brothers that both protect and annoy you. I had all of that… once.
That was before the accident. That was before the murder. That was before… The Willows.
Evelyn Magwire now has a choice to make. Does she turn her back on the mysteries that have consumed her life, or does she face the darkness and find the truth? When her brother comes up missing, the choice is made for her. Forced on a path where her friends become her enemies and her enemies become her friends, Evie learns that the changes happening to herself are the scariest of all. She’s not sure she will ever be the same again… Because some changes are forever… and bloodlust… never dies.

A huge Harry Potter fan, she decided that her heart belonged to YA literature and thus began her career. Her debut novel, The Witches Lottery, was inspired by the mountains of Rye, Colorado, where she spent her early childhood years. Currently she still resides in Colorado with her husband and their four children.
The Willows by Krystal George (Review by kiwigirlreads)
Plot Overview:
Evelyn Magwire used to have it all, a happy family, great friends and a loving boyfriend. After her parents are killed in an accident things just keep getting worse and worse for Evelyn. Her grief isolates her from her friends and remaining family and it’s not until another tragedy strikes that she is forced to pull herself together.
When one of her brothers goes missing in mysterious circumstances Evie finds that she is the only one who believes he is still out there and wants to track down the truth. Her enquiry leads her to The Willows – what was her brother doing out there, could he really be a killer, and what dark secrets are hiding in the chilled and deserted woods?
Evie finds herself pulled deeper and deeper into a new world of darkness where it’s hard to tell who is friend and who is foe. In the end Evie must make a choice – will she give in to temptation and even if she resists, can she ever be the same again?
What I thought:
I was provided a copy of ‘The Willows’ by the author for reviewing purposes.
My review will attempt to explain what I did and did not like and you can judge for yourself. If it sounds like something that you might like then I would certainly recommend you giving it a try.
The Willows is one of those books that had a lot of potential and although it was good you can see how it could have been so much better. It was pretty short at 140 pages and it really could have done with some extra fleshing out of characters, motives and background. It is a paranormal young adult tale and it does have a good mystery to it also. I think that it will appeal to younger aged teenagers more than adults due to the plot construction being a bit flimsy.
I thought that the story started off pretty slow, I found it a hard to get into as the story went about the build up and background information. Once the action starts and the mystery begins to unfold it does get better, it quickly picks up and moves swiftly towards the conclusion. I did think that overall it was a good story with some interesting ideas and I enjoyed reading it.
The characters were likable but lacked depth; this is where some fleshing out was really needed. I just never felt like I knew anyone especially well. The main character of Evie seemed to be rather shallow and well a bit ‘fickle’ at times – she has feelings for a lot of boys during the course of such a short book and there does not really seem to be much of a reason for many of these feelings. I like a bit more grounding to my storylines rather than where a girl sees a handsome vampire and is immediately head over heels in love to the detriment of self preservation
In the same vein I felt that some of the reactions and emotions in the book were poorly executed. The main character has tragically lost her parents, when she breaks down with grief at their funeral people act like she is a freak. The same goes for later when she is back at school, people can’t understand why she is not back to her usual chipper self. I can’t image that people would be so callous, such a loss would take quite a while to recover from and I would like to think that that most people would be a bit more accommodating especially her close friends.
The storyline was rather interesting, I liked the mystery of it and once it gets started there is enough to keep you interested. There are some twists and turns and at times it even gets to be a bit creepy as the protagonist gets closer and closer to the truth. Although there were some flaws and things that I thought could have been better it was an entertaining story and is a nice addition to the genre
There is a bit of swearing, some blood and a small amount of gore in this book. It’s pretty minimal compared to others in the genre. There is not much in the way of sexual content either, there is some teenage kissing and heavy petting but it’s pretty tame.
Final Comments:
I did like the story, and although though it might seem like I was harsh this was just because I did like it and I could see how it could have been even better. I thought overall ‘The Willows’ was a quick, easy and enjoyable read. If you like vampire or paranormal romance type books then I would recommend you checking it out.
The Willows had an interesting premise, and I found the first chapters intriguing, so much so that I e-mailed the author to ask for a review copy, which she kindly provided. As you can tell from the blurb and other reviews, Evie starts the story emotionally numb after the tragic loss of both her parents. She is close to both her brothers, and it was pretty wonderful to meet a family that cares about each other instead of being severely dysfunctional.
As the story progressed, though, I found my enjoyment slowly reducing. Much of this centered around Evie's reactions to certain situations. While I realize she is coming from a difficult place (depression? PTSD?), some of her choices failed to convince me as being what someone in her situation would really do. Here are a couple examples:
Finally, there are a LOT of love interests floating around, including two of the paranormal variety. Here, again, I didn't quite believe the explanation of why the two paranormals were willing to fight over Evie: she's just so beautiful, as their parent says. She didn't seem to be a great beauty at school, and coming from her emotionally damaged state, she's not charismatic or magnetic at this point (nor do I expect her to be). I guess what I'm trying to say is I really needed more depth--more depth in how characters perceived each other, more depth in how Evie thought about and dealt with situations (or at least, a clear recognition that she can't deal with certain things), more depth of the secondary characters as a whole. And fewer love interests. :)
Still, if you are interested in paranormal mysteries, the story and the question of just what is going on unfolds well. If you read the first chapters (on Amazon or wherever) and find yourself interested, by all means try it out--and then right a review to let the rest of us know what you thought. Everyone has different tastes, and what didn't work for me may be a non-issue for you.
The Willows is beautifully written, tragic story based around what happens to Evie after her parents die.
Immediately, I was drawn into this mysterious story through the somewhat shocking opening. It is obvious to the reader that this opening is in fact a forewarning as to what is going to happen at the end of the book and it put me on the edge of my seat straight away. The interesting opening made me extremely excited to carry on reading as soon as possible and find out what happens, which rarely happens to me when reading a book. It usually takes me at least a chapter or two to really get into it but that was not the case this time. Which, to me, is a clear sign that this would be a good book. And good it was.
The character development in this book was very good, I liked Evie straight away perhaps because of the sympathy I felt for her due to her reaction of her parents death. I liked how sure Evie was of herself when it came to what had happened to her brother, I loved reading about the relationship she has with her siblings. So much so that she would risk her life to go and save them! Futhermore, her relationship with the other characters, especially the two brothers, Remy and Sevren was very interesting, if a little unusual. I found the dynamics of that different relationship very interesting to read about especially considering what the two brothers were!
Although, one character that I did feel was slightly under-developed was Landon. There wasn't much of a back story to his character which made it hard to understand why he so suddenly betrayed Evie and turned bad. Everything about his character was a bit sudden making it hard to understand why he did the things he did.
This story does have a lot of mystery in it and it definitely kept me on the edge of my seat dying to know what would happen next. The pages definitely turned themselves as I could not put this book down, I was dying to know that Evie would find out! And when she did find out the truth, well... Wow. Really was not expecting that! Which is another reason you should read this book, it will definitely shock you with all the interesting twists and turns, and that shockingly amazing ending! Well, let's just say it will keep you wanting more...
‘The Willows’ was a great novel. I love the way the story was told. ‘The Willows’ really surprised me. I didn’t even see the plot coming. The way the story began I thought it was going to be a murder mystery/ thriller. However that is not what it turned out to be. A shocking twist spun me into a dark work of paranormal adventure. I really thought from the beginning it was going to be about a girl rebuilding her life after a devastating accident that resulted in the death of her parents. Then wham the action started. Her brother disappeared and in her quest to find him she discovers a very secret and very dark world that is so dangerous it could kill her and her loved ones. I think the story was written flawlessly and I really enjoyed it and loved the unique characters. Evie is such a strong heroine, I think plenty of people will flock to her fan club. I also really loved the setting of the story it was really creative and unlike anything I have read before.
‘The Willows’ gave a nice paranormal twist to a murder mystery. I really thoroughly enjoyed the book. I think girls will of course swoon over Remy and Sevren; they are the typical bad guys. One is kind of good and the other is totally bad and yet they are both irresistible. Girls will eat them up! I loved the fact that it wasn’t your typical vampire story. Remy and Sevren were fighting over Evie but she wasn’t head over heels in love with either of them or dying to be a vampire. She just wanted a normal life and to find out what happened to her brother. She wanted these vampires gone. It gives the story more edge. Yes they did have power over her; using their magic so that is a problem but still I loved it the new view.
It was a great story and I am a big fan. The ending left me hankering for more and I am praying I get more of this story.
I will be keeping my eye out for more from Krystal!!!
COVER ART: I quite like the cover it goes well with the atmosphere of the story, albeit I dislike the over glow on the models face. With the way Evelyn's life had turned out with the loss of people so close to her I would've thought the cover model would look less put together.
PLOT: Evelyn's life is thrown into the frying pan when her parents die. she's left with her brothers only to have Jackson, her youngest brother disappear on her. she withdraws herself from her friends and family in the hopes of finding out where her brother is and to clear up the murder suicide the cops have came up with over the disappearance over her brother Jackson and his on and off again girlfriend Piper, who has also gone missing.
On her search Evelyn find herself at The Willows a playground at an edge of the forest, when she starts to ask questions around town she is not being given the welcoming or the sympathy she might've expected. Instead she receives cold stares and warning to stay out of the woods after dark, if she knew what would be good for her she's listen.
We follow around an array of characters throughout this book it hard to introduce them all without giving away too much of the story. I quite liked the idea of this book but I didn't find it pleasing in the sense i felt it was too rushed in some areas. I'd like to know more about the gorgeous Jake Cole, and have him involved a bit more. The same with the Vampires I'd like to know more about them.
I think this book would've been better if it was spread across two books, but by the way the story finished leads me to think there might be a second book. If there is that would be great and it would help me clear up anything that was left unfinished in this book.
The Willows (Kindle Edition) The Willows, first off is an amazing book! Before I say anything else I want to say that.
Evie doesn't understand why she feels numb as she stands shaking hands at her parents funeral. Feeling empty, she proceeds to push everyone away from her, including her friends and boyfriend. When a turn of events happens, she finds herself in a little town where a huge mystery haunts the eyes of the people. She pushes through every fear to be standing in the Willows. No one wants to speak of the people who just go missing...
What I loved Everything! This book had my attention the whole way through. It was extremely mysterious and at times creepy in spots. Evie finds herself in the middle of an intense situation. It's really hard to review because I don't want to ruin the mystery of it! I loved the characters and how well written this whole story is. I feel like I'm reading a book that could make millions! I will try and get the word out about this author as I was super impressed by her. It's paranormal, yet held a deep mystery throughout it, I like it because it wasn't as typical as most teen books. The Willows is a fantastic read!
What else Honestly I don't have a negative thing to say about it. Probably the only heads up for people is there is swearing occasionally in the book. One part was a little gory, but I don't mind a little blood.
The Willows gives us a glimpse that the world around us is not really what we think it is, that the monsters we ultimately fear really walk among us and no one is as they seem.
We meet Evie as a damaged young woman who has had to endure major tragedy, and there is only so much her young heart can take before it shuts down completely. But there is nothing like a mystery to get you moving and to find out what is really going on.
It seems like the hunt to solve the puzzle re-awakens all of the emotions of Evelyn Magwire and remind her what it is like to be human. That will become critical for her to hold onto.
While The Willows starts off a little slow with getting to understand the characters, once the mysteries begin to unfold, you are quickly drawn in and it makes up for the start. I overall found this a very enjoyable read and one I was not able to put down. I found myself drug back into the story time and time again when I should be working on other things. It overall is a quick read, coming in at roughly 140 pages, and is one that I think the young and the young at heart can enjoy.

The Willows is ENCHANTING & SCARY. The cover is beautiful, and it represents the book's beauty and darkness well.
Krystal McLaughlin creates a world that piques your curiosity while simultaneously causing you to yell, "C'mon, don't go in there!" at the book. Many scenes in the book are truly terrifying, I felt my heart start to race right along with Evelyn's. Though, strangely, those terrifying scenes often ended in moments with handsome men. Even the scary men were often sexy.
Evelyn is stubborn, determined, and loyal. Her character was entertaining and relatable. She experiences so much heartbreak, yet, she just pushes through it all and ends up on top. I found myself rooting for her, and all her madness, the entire time.
Krystal, as once again, brought us great characters in a creative world.
Not another teenage vampire love story, The Willows grabs you by the throat and forces you to feel. The story follows Evelyn Magwire through the heartache of first losing her parents, and then losing her brother. She is numb, heartbroken and barely functioning. Then, she receives a symbol of hope... She searches High and low and finds that maybe, just maybe her brother isn't gone... Along the way she uncovers a coven of vampires and finds love, both real and not. She struggles to keep from losing herself amidst the sea of emotions that she is finally feeling and tries to find the truth. I was so sad to see this book end. The story was enchanting and so amazing! Krystal McLaughlin has the amazing ability to write a story that you can not disengage yourself from. I am in eager anticipation for the next novel she releases and highly recommend everything that she has written so far.
It was the first time I had read anything from the paranormal/fantasy gene but I am so glad I did it was such a good read. At the beginning of the book Evelyn' s parents have both died leaving her and her 2 brothers a few weeks later her younger brother disappears along with his on/off girlfriend. Evelyn is sure there is more to there disappearance than meets the eye and is drawn to a small town and playground on the edge of a forest,The Willows were things seam way beyond normal. The only thing with this book is I would have liked to have learnt more about the other characters such as Jake Cole and the vampires as I still have some un-answered questions but after reading the epilogue there may be another book to come that would finish off this story.
This book was one big surprise for me! Because I didn’t know what was comming at all. At first I thought it was a very good book about a missing brother but I never imagined there would be vampires there! I have read two other books from this author and I loved them both so when I was asked to read this one I didn’t have to think about it at all! I love the writing style, you never get the feeling that you’re reading so many pages. That’s how fast you go through the book because you want to know what’s going on. Every chapter ends with it’s own cliffhanger and that gets you hooked into the story. An amazing book by an amazingly talented author. You should all go and read this.
I really enjoyed this story. so much not expected that it held me in suspense. The characters were interesting and the plot as very good. I am curious to know if there will be another later or not. The ending makes me wonder. Very good story
