Three Wishes

Rate this book
Not every seventeen-year-old girl works part time for the U.N.I.V.E.R.S.E., but when you’re a genie, you have obligations. I’d rather spend my time rocking with my older brother’s band. I’ve been waiting years to replace the last drummer. Just when it’s looking good for me, Leo Fuller shows up, and this bad boy genie’ s after more than just my drummer gig. Male genies are dangerous, volatile, bad-boy types, and I’m finding him way too attractive. If we’re caught together, we could both lose our powers and be banished to the other realm. I know helping Leo will be a really bad idea. What I don’t know is why I’m doing it anyway.

LIGHTHEARTED FUN

Jen is a seventeen year old genie. But what she really wants to do is play drums in her brother's band. When their drummer quits the opportunity arises, but that's when Leo turns up. He's a great drummer so Jen loses out. Leo is also a genie. Genies aren't allowed to fraternise. But then Jen agrees to help Leo save his father.

This is a fairly quick read, that is suitable for a younger audience IMO. The authors style is flowing and the story is humorous and witty. I thought that Jen's relationship with her siblings was very well portrayed. I liked the relationship between Jen and Leo as well. If I have a complaint it would have been nice for the story to have been a bit longer and fleshed out a bit more.

For 2/3 of this book I was planning on giving it 4 stars, however when we hit the last third all of the things that had bothered me in the first part now became worse and by the time I had finished it had lost 2 stars.

So what was wrong?

Well the genie concept was interesting but strangely enough this was never really explored. Alexander didn't ever explain how the genies grant wishes or how they managed to get from one place to another without arousing suspicion when they teleported. It was never explained what would happen if people were told that genies exist; it wasn't detailed how much time passes in the real world when genies are called to do their duty and how do they explain their absences to the real world. It felt to me that whenever Alexander needed to move the plot forward, details would get overlooked. Like, how did the suspect actually find out they were on to him/her (I don't want to give it away so I won't go into details). It came to the point where the penny was just dropping for some of the characters and then boom it was all over bar the shouting. The reason for the set up was also never explained in full so I ended up pretty confused by it all.

Another thing that did really irritate me was the relationships between the main family members. The protagonist, Jen is 17 in the book but her parents spoke to her and treated her like she was about 10, telling her she had to be in by 7.30pm and getting involved in brother/sister squabbles like they were life or death arguments. The mother was unnecessarily cagey about her work but again it seemed that the author used that caginess to gloss over plot points that hadn't been fully planned out before the actual writing commenced.

I can imagine that you are wondering if I actually liked anything in the book.. yes i did. I like the easy style of writing that Ms Alexander has. The story gets going straight away and pulls you along with it. I do think that the genie aspect was such a promising avenue to explore and with a little more planning the story could have really taken off. Juli Alexander is by no means a bad writer and I certainly wouldn't judge her by this piece of work alone.

Jen is a genie and goes around to people who have earned enough Karma points and grants them three wishes. There are allot of rules in the genie world and one of the biggest is genie can't hang around each other but when Leo, a male (hottie) genie, comes to Jen asking for her help clearing his father of a crime he didn't commit she decides to to what she can to help.

Loved this story lately everything is about vampires and witches so seeing something about Genie's is a nice change. I enjoyed seeing Jen's innermonologue and how no matter what she is always true to herself. Leo was such a sweetie and I loved his faith and loylaty in his father even when everyone else was against him. The secendary characters created a great balance as well and I loved the interactions between everyone.

The story was kind of all over the place. Jen doing genie stuff only happened maybe 3 times. There was a whole section about her dad making chili that she and her mom didn't like to eat and weather or not her brother Sean hit puberty kept popping up. When the little mystery about Leo's dad was solved, it was everything happening all at once. I know it was a short novel but the story would of been more interesting if the unimportant stuff was taken out and the main story was more filled in.

Jen just wants to have something normal in her life, now that a good portion of her time is spent working and granting wishes on behalf of the genie U.N.I.V.E.R.S.E. So when the drummer in her brother's band quits, all Jen wants is a chance to replace him. She's understandably pissed off when her brother goes behind her back and fills the spot before she even has a chance. When it turns out that Leo is not only her replacement as potential drummer, he's also a male genie, Jen is in deep trouble. Because it's against the laws of the genie authorities for male and female genies to be around each other and have contact. They could both lose their powers and be banished to the other realm for good if they're caught. Leo desperately needs Jen's help though, so that he can clear his Dad's name before he gets banished for crimes he didn't commit. Sneaking around in through her Mom's office, reading classified documents and going on spy missions together only brings Jen and Leo closer together. Can they solve the mystery, save Leo's Dad and not manage to get their hearts broken when it's time to say goodbye?

I really enjoyed this book! It reminded me of everything I like about fantasy-infused, contemporary YA lit. It was absolutely fun and every once in a while it's nice to just stop overthinking and read a book that reminds us to love life. Jen was the typical teenager, just wanting to hang out with her friends and have fun for a change. Her parents were somewhat overprotective, but you could tell they really loved her and both her brothers with all their hearts. Their lives were very average American, even with Jen's Mom working high up in the genie regulation business conducted by the U.N.I.V.E.R.S.E. Also, her Mom is (if I remember right) the Vice-President of the cover for the genie higher ups, a booming cell phone business. Jen's older brother is kind of a douchebag and it would've been nice to see some deeper emotion behind him. Her younger brother hacking into her chattroom cracked me up, but I LOVED her parents' punishment for him to only be allowed to read "girl" books like Esperanza Rising and writing book reports. I laughed so hard over it! All the family interaction in this book was a refreshing change to me, upon the heels of so many books where the hero/heroine's family is MIA or just completely awful or bland.

The explanation of the U.N.I.V.E.R.S.E. might have been kind of vague, but I was kind of glad that with the light-hearted tone of the rest of the book, that Ms. Alexander didn't bog down us readers with an overload of detail. I got the basics: if you get enough karma points you get three wishes, Jen was genie through her female heritage (skips every other gen.), male and female genies are too volatile together and the rulers of the genie organization were famous dead people. I thought it was quite interesting. It created a believable jump off point for the romantic tension between Jen and Leo, the somewhat R&J vibe and the awkward hesitancy of it all. I did think that Leo going to Jen for help was a little bit farfetched, but it fit in well enough with the rest of the plot that it wasn't majorly out of place. I really wasn't surprised at who the perpetrator of the frame job was but I did like the conclusion to the mystery and how it was carried out. The ending leaves things wide open for a sequel. I truly would love to read one. I had a blast and I highly recommend it to those who would like a fresh take on genies, a mystery and a nice sitcomy type romance/family comedy story.

VERDICT: 5/5 Stars

Juli is a new to me author. I was sucked in my the prospect of Genie series. I mean we don't get genie very often now do we?

Well, unfortunately what started out pretty well, started to quickly decay as far as world building and story flow go.

I would like to mention the good point first. The idea was very unique and creative. I mean this story had a huge amount of potential. The whole U.N.I.V.E.R.S.E concept and how they used to bring up some civil rights undertones was kind of brilliant.

The down side to that was the execution got lost in poor world building, juvinile characters, and poor plot development.

First off, we have NO building on the world of the Genie. We kept getting told everything. We know basics and that is as far as that goes. We don't know how she grants wishes, we don't know how she gets from point A to B. And then she suddenly gets deathly sick when someone wishes for 'forbidden' wishes. I found myself going back and reading trying to remember when this consequence was even mentioned and WHY exactly she was being punished for another persons dying wishes.

Second, ALL the teenagers, maybe excluding Leo don't act their proper ages. They are all supposed to be in high school yet, when people mention sex, Jen goes 'Ew' at the idea of Leo wanting her 90% of the time. I get how we wanna keep the whole innocence in the young adult genre but her whole 'boys are gross and have coodies' attitude was making want to shake my kindle as I read it.

Her relationship with her brothers was silly. I know that teenage boys are awkward and rude, but I have two brother younger than me. One is four years one is 11 years younger. I was never 'disgusted by them', in fact the one that was four years off me used to come to me for advice. I never was like "EW your in the bathroom what are YOU doing?" Because I didn't really care. But then again I acted my age in high school I didn't act like a 13 year old.

The poor plot sort of strings you a long for most of the book when they trying to hunt down the 'baddie' then it sort of just unfolds in a paragraph--yeah, I was kinda like, "Oh" and left totally deflated.

I do believe Mrs. Alexander has a huge amount of potential. I think stronger beta readers and outlining her stories before she dives in to write something this complicated would assist her stories more.

Adorable!

Three Wishes is a quick, cute read that I really loved.

I love the idea of genies. I wish they were real and I wouldn’t mind having my own sexy genie man to grant me wishes.

Jen is great. Except for a few things, she could be a great role model for many young girls. She seemed to care a little too much for what other people thought of her, but she was also very levelheaded. Although, I could have don’t without all the lying. That’s just something I can’t tolerate.

Her relationship with her two brothers is an absolute perfect representation of siblings. Other books show siblings as a more unified set, but my experience with my brother is nothing but chaos. Constantly at each other’s throats. Prank wars for days. Screaming matches. That’s how real siblings are. I can’t tell you how weird it would be for my brother to come up to me and just get all emotional. Nope. Something would be very wrong.

Ultimately, I loved her family.

Leo was so sweet! A charming gentleman with a motorcycle. Delightful. He and Jen’s growing relationship wasn’t pushed, and I found that adorable.

The genie aspect was interesting! I hope to read more about it in the future from Mrs. Alexander.

Ms. Alexander's originality and sense of humor always make for a delightful read. In this book, her heroine is a teenage genie. Yep, like the kind who used to be trapped in bottles. That's not true anymore, but the bestowing of three wishes is still one of their talents. Jen is certainly not your typical genie. She can only grant wishes when someone racks up enough Karma points, but even that keeps her pretty busy and interferes with her social life in high school. What she really wants to do is play drums in her brother's band, and she thinks she may have a chance when his drummer quits. But then Leo shows up. Not only is Leo a good drummer but he is also--gasp--another genie. Fraternization between male and female genies is frowned upon by the U.N.I.V.E.R.S.E., the organization that regulates genies, so Jen is taking quite a chance when she agrees to help Leo save his dad from being banished to the other realm for crimes he didn't commit. I won't give away any more of the plot, but I can assure you that it's entertaining and well worth your time.

Living Life Blind On The Karma Beat

This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to read the next one!

Jen is a genie. She spends her life trying to be normal. Not that she has a chance! What with lying to her friends all the time about where she is when she is granting wishes and trying to keep up with her schoolwork it amazing she isn't flunking out. Being seventeen is hard enough for a normal teen girl, much less one with all her responsibilities! When Jen meets Leo she realizes that her world is not what she was led to believe. Why is someone framing his father? Why are genies of opposite sexes not allowed to be around each other really? Why are they still treated like criminals even when they have done nothing wrong? Will! They be able to save his father before he is banished forever?

***This series is suitable for young adult through adult readers who enjoy clean urban fantasy with a dash of romance along with all the suspense, action, mystery and adventure :)

I really liked the characters of Jen and Leo, they complimented one another very well and I liked that Genies we're portrayed as normal people with lives. I'm new to NA and definitely miss the heat from adult romances but these two provided their own "smoke" and "flames" it was a fun and interesting read.

Jen has never broken the rules, never lied to her parents, and never thought about abusing her powers, until Leo. If you're going to rebel why not for a hot guy!

Leo cares about his father and will do whatever he can to save him, but at what costs? He's not only putting himself in danger but also Jen, his feelings for her grow but his father is what matters most. A forbidden romance is fun but rarely ends well...

I read this as part of the boxed set - which I'm really thankful for because honestly this cover is one of my least favorites. Ever. Judgmental much? Yes.

Thankfully the story is really quite cute. A fairly quick and easy read, I was able to finish in a few hours. I liked the whole idea of U.N.I.V.E.R.S.E. and I thought Jen and her family were realistic enough.

I totally agree with Jen's mom about Jen's motives behind helping an unknown but I guess this is YA enough to not need those kinds of explanations.

Not sure if there's a sequel to this but I liked the author's style and the humorous bits sprinkled throughout.

Three Wishes by Juli Alexander
Three wishes by Juli Alexander is now The Karma Beat. I can see the Three Wishes title, but the new The Karma Beat title has me puzzled. I have never read a book about genies so I thought that I would give this book a try. I loved the premise; the book, however, didn’t live up to its potential. The possibilities of the genie world were not explored in this book. I would have loved to know more background on Ms. Alexander’s genies. Having said that, I liked this book even though it has a more romantic mystery feel to it.

When I read the premise for "The Karma Beat," I wasn't sure how I'd like it - I felt like a story about modern day genies might be a hard sell. But I gave it a shot, and found it to be entertaining and to tackle the concept rather well. The characters do seem to act realistic overall, especially the teens and other younger characters. I found the interactions believable and the characters likeable, and I rather liked the way the story ended (even though it screams for a sequel!) Will definitely keep Juli Alexander around on my "to read" list.

Another titillating teen tale by Juli Alexander! I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning to finish this one since I've had a shortage of spare time. If there's anything bound to tug on the heartstrings more than unrequited love, it's forbidden love. Definitely gonna keep an eye out for the sequel to this one!

Not a bad read. The beginning was a bit dull. By the middle it pick up and before I knew four hours have gone by and it was over.

Three Wishes gets 4 stars. It looses a star for not grabbing me fully within a couple pages. Normally a writer can loose more than a star for this. Though Three Wishes did pick up. The writing style was awesome. The Jen’s brothers were a hoot and a half!

I recommend this book for anyone who is completely into YA Books and/or Genies!!!

Not unenjoyable at all.

There were a few things that felt weak. Such as the 17 year old genie being activated early, but they never explained why she was activated early.

Also the reasons behind all the drama was a bit on the weak side.

But all in all, it wasn't unenjoyable.

Jen seemed like a very normal girl. Though "I HAVE to practice" got really annoying. No, she didn't HAVE to practice. She chose to practice.

Leo, I liked.

etc etc.

This book was a cute, quick read. It had a fascinating plot that kept me reading. I will never out grow a good teen love story. It had interesting characters and a girl I could relate to (except maybe the genie part) but I can pretend. Overall, it was a good read. I received this book for free through Firstreads.

I was first introduced to this authot's work "Stirring Up Troublr" that I absolutely loved. I was so excited to see this one available. From readingbthe two books, her main characters are very likeable and real. I am still awaiting the follow-up to Stirring Up Trouble and Am making her pne of my new favorite authors.

Regarding the story, i so want to meet Leo!

Too short, but I loved it! I haven't read many books about genies so this was a nice change. Jen is a fun MC & Leo seems awesome, I wanted more of those two. I'm so glad there will be another book because I didn't want to story to end. There is a lot of cool background/plot surrounding the genies & I definitely want to learn more!

The first Juli Alexander book I read was Stirring Up Trouble, and while I did like that one, this one was so much better. It had a more cohesive plot and better character development.

Besides, who can resist the lure of a genie and a teen mystery all rolled up in one? And romance. It's the total package.

Good, although not much romance, and it's not The Karma Beat - it's Three Wishes. I read it on Kindle and very hard to find there because of the name (and cover) change. It's also a cliffhanger of sorts. There is supposed to be a sequel from early this year called "The Techno Echo" and it's nowhere to be found! Definitely need either the continuation or resolution of Jen's and Leo's story!

Talk about one hot kiss! This was a cute story, and Jen and Leo are adorable together! even if it is forbidden to the point of banishment. I can't wait to see what lengths they will go through to see each other in the next book. I picked up this book as part of the Supernatural Six collection. I would recommend this book to others.

This was a really fun read. Jenny was a pretty cool chick who seemed like a normal teenager but was bad ass enough when she needed to be. Leo was a nice counterpart and I found the whole idea of the U.N.I.V.E.R.S.E. very intriguing. I just wish the author went into a little more detail about the world and all the rules.

Ok book, not her best.

I am a 52 year old mom with a 15 year old daughter. We LOVE the Hottie books and eagerly await the he,t Paxton, PI book. I try to pre-read YA books for my (somewhat sheltered) girl. This is an OK story, but I won't be letting her read it. Not comfortable with the P***s references.
