Carole Gill's work always has a way of taking me by surprise - in a good way. The more I read from her, the more I see how versatile this author is. From gothic romance to horror fiction and everything in between - I really do love her voice. Carole writes in an unpretentious, flowing, and relatable voice. It's the voice of the man and woman of the street - and from their point of view we see stories of gothic mystery, unspeakable horror, and life's tragedies.

I enjoyed reading Prey and the other bonus story The Monster Inside. But it's what lies behind the scenes of Gill's stories that really jumps out at me. PREY is the story of two, hormone-driven teenagers whose "illicit" tumble brings unexpected and terrifying consequences. It reminded me a bit of a religious parable and the feelings of guilt that are often instilled early and used as a weapon to raise children in "the right way". And, if they digress, the flames of Hell will consume them. There is a very deep meaning to this story, one will find.

But then, there's the star piece which, in my opinion, is THE MONSTER INSIDE. This is the story of a woman who lived for years under the thumb of a cruel and uncaring man, a relationship that causes her to wither away and suffer a real life tragedy. How many people are there who can relate to this? How many long-suffering, battered women who finally, hopefully, got their life back after such abuse? A man doesn't have to be physically violent to kill you slowly, ruthlessly - this story illustrates this perfectly. Told exclusively in the woman's POV, this tale feels so personal, so real, that it touched me, and shocked me to the core. I was so utterly engaged, fully wrapped in this story. This is a true, masterful horror piece...but anyone who has gone through this type of experience should read it simply to empathize with the character. Please read it - you will feel the desperation, and you'll need a stiff drink just to try to forget...
