I was a bit confused at the beginning of Forfeit but, as I read, I began to understand the true meaning behind the book and all the pieces started falling into place. So, what started out as being a story that had me wanting to slap the “hero” in the head, had me ending up cheering for him.
Brent is an arrogant SOB that has held Cat’s fate in his hands for over a year. A marriage of convenience so that Brent could secure his place on the Board and Cat could secure her future. There was one catch to the marriage – no sex unless one of them broke the agreement. If the contract was broken, then the other had to “Forfeit”. Well, Cat broke the agreement and had to pay the “Forfeit”. She had to fulfill 12 fantasies of Brents – one for each month that they were together with no sex. And, what fantasies he had!
OK, so Brent’s initial reasons for taking Cat as his wife were to try to get her out of his system. They spent one night together and he walked away. Cat didn’t like being his one-night play thing which is why she put the “no sex” clause in the agreement when he asked her to marry him. Cat refused to give into her “want” of Brent, no matter what. Yes, bad past relationship. Brent refused to accept the fact that he could not have her for over a year so, he set her up for the fall. What Brent didn’t count on was finding out that he couldn’t get her out of his system and that he loved her. How was he going to let her walk away when the “Forfeit” was over?
Once you get past all the sex in the book and, believe me, there’s a lot, you get to see the true Brent. You understand his reasons for not wanting to have a relationship. You also learn of Cat’s past and why she is afraid to give into her sexual needs. Put an alpha male and an insecure female together and you get fireworks in the extreme sense of the word. He finally gets her to realize that “a cook in the kitchen and a whore in the bedroom” is okay. There is nothing to be ashamed about and everything to look forward to.
Zara Stoneley’s writing was very explicit. She moved the story along and brought glimpses of Cat and Brent through at the right times. I feel that I would have understood the book a little better if we started getting glimpses of Brent’s intentions sooner in the book. Maybe then I wouldn’t have felt like he was using her. But, it all came together when he finally opens up to her and she accepts who she really is. One thing that I can say is that the banter between the two of them when they are not having sex or as they are leading up to sex is fun. This truly brought them to life for me, made them a real couple and not just 2 people who were fulfilling an agreement. And, yes, they do have their Happily Ever After even if she just keeps saying “Maybe”.

Well, this really ought to come with a do not read unless you have your partner handy, warning ;-)
This is one HOT read! The sex scenes are beautifully written and as a reader you really get drawn into the chemistry between these two. I loved the concept of the Forfeit, and as the back story of the characters unfolded slowly their motivations became clear. I did feel that perhaps there was too much emphasis on the sex at times. I'm not complaining, lol, this is an erotic romance, after all, but for the length of the story I would have liked to have seen a little more emphasis on character development. The author does tie everything up beautifully at the end.
One thing that bothered me is really an editing issue, that pulled me out of the story repeatedly. There was no indication of scene breaks or POV changes. Not sure whether that was just my review copy, but it forced me to read back a paragraph a few times.
The scene changes, in particular were quite abrupt. One minute they're in the bedroom, then they're in the kitchen, then it's another day...
I got used to it, and it didn't stop me from reading, but in a less engrossing story it would have done. It made reading quite hard work at times.
Having said all that, I really enjoyed this story and wouldn't hesitate to read this author again.

I really enjoyed this! It was a steamy, sometimes emotional read. Brent finds himself unable to deny his attraction and feelings for Cat after one night so he makes her a deal, he needs to get a promotion to the board but needs a wife to do so, she's just lost her home and needs somewhere to live and can't afford a new place on her current salary, so he asks her to marry him, be his wife for one year and solve both their problems as he'll give her the money she needs in the 'divirce'.
Thing is Brent isn't actually intending to give Cat up and she imposes a no sex condition on their marriage but she breaks one of the rules and has to pay a forfeit. The forfeit being she has to partake of 12 of Brents sexual fantasies with him!
Brent is using sex and the fantasies to try and get Cat to open up to him emotionally and gain her freedom. He sees a fire and passion in her that she tries to surpress cause of her ex-fiance and her parents. He wants her to learn who she really is and like herself. He also wants her to take a risk on him and not walk away at the end.
They do fall in love with each other and I actually love them as a couple and the little things that are revealed by them as the fantasies unfold.

Zara Stoneley's novels always have strong, brilliant concepts, and Forfeit is another example of this. Cat is doing a forfeit for every month of her (chaste) year long marriage of convenience to Brent. The characters and their motivations are swiftly established, and develop with interesting twists and surprises as the story progresses. But most of all this is an action novel, with pacey, page-turning, graphic descriptions. Although it's Brent's fantasies that are being played out, along the way Cat is pushed to face up to who she is and what she wants, so this is a great read. Definitely needs a combustion warning tho - Forfeit is HOT HOT HOT!!!! I was lucky enough to win a signed (paper) copy of this book with a different cover. Heart shaped handcuffs, red rose petals and pearls - one of my fave covers ever. Resounding five stars for this one!
