Scarlet Hyacinth was born in 1986, in a Romania still struggling under the weight of the communist regime. As a young girl, she started studying the English language and fell in love with books. After a childhood spent devouring hundreds of pages of fantasy literature, Scarlet found her calling. While at uni, she discovered with the help of a dear friend that she had a knack for writing. The rest, as they say, is history, or rather, lots of hard work and sleepless nights. Today, she can only say with a smile that nothing is impossible and that no matter what others say, you can achieve your dreams if you work hard enough.
Transcribed from a conversation in my head with my soul mate, last night’s bottle of 2006 Shiraz:
PointyEars42: So all this drama? Are shifters a new thing that they don't know how to prove a mate-bond exists? 2006Shiraz: Nah, they're just too dumb to split the couple up and see if the one knows what the other is doing. PointyEars42: Sigh, too stupid to live.
PointyEars42: Hey, you notice how women are uniformly either evil or ineffectual in this series? You think it’s because the main characters are gay? 2006Shiraz: No, I just think the author has issues. Or no editor. PointyEars42: Or is just plain lazy? 2006Shiraz: Well the undisguised "cut & paste" story lines between books is a bit much. PointyEars42: Don’t you mean publishing the same book again and again but using "find & replace" to change the names? 2006Shiraz: Same difference. Hmmm... laziness AND rampant mysogeny.
PointyEars42: So why can't we stop reading this craptastic series? 2006Shiraz: Well, you never have been able to leave a loose tooth or healing wound alone. PointyEars42: True, true.... and after a night with you I always find bad writing hilarious. 2006Shiraz: Also true. And there was the megaladon story line. You read that 1st and got sucked in, remember? PointyEars42: Ahh, the big fishy book. That was a successful mainstream urban fantasy novel waiting to happen. Pity. 2006Shiraz: Shall we see how much worse book 12 manages to be? PointyEars42: Hells yes! (Braces for it by reaching for the corkscrew...)
This redeems Isaac's story. Reed and Anson are both adorable. I was hooked after reading the prologue which was just so cute. There were very brief asshole moments from Liam and Shiloh but it didn't last. Thank goodness there was no appearance by Elder Kevin and Anabel Wade. There still are stupid older shifters/relatives who are blinded by hate and bias which I wish would fall off the face of the Earth.
Anson's son Paris is a good boy too and looks like his mating with Jace is next.
3.5 While I give the couple in this story a 4 star, the ending brought in down a little. "Mommy dearest teaming up with Tyrell, now where have I heard that before???? Oh Yea! in a earlier book of this series!!! I'm tired of the bad guys in all the series coming out of siren being so powerful and ALWAYS getting away. Mommy dearest in this one needs to meet silver bullet!
Hm. I am decidedly underwhelmed. Sorry to say this, but this book was kinda lame.
It began with the main couple giving in to their long-standing connection. From then on it was just… stuff. And the same old drama, nothing surprising. Although I liked Paris and his viewpoint. Pity they already set him up way deep for what I guess will be the next book. Seriously, is it too much to ask to have a romance in this series where within one book the couple meets and things develop from there? That’s what I want to see, you know? Not necessarily the first meeting, but the actual development. Instead we get the same rehashed plot points from all the previous books.
One thing that really bugs me so much about most of the stories in this series is that the doubt some people express as to whether the protagonists of a given book are truly mates can so easily be refuted. Utterly. Proven wrong beyond a doubt. Mind link, hello? Seriously, I am losing patience with this. Why don’t they fucking step up and just prove that this mating is true? Why didn’t the previous couples? This is all just for the sake of having a plot? That’s weak. I am utterly convinced that this author can do better; she does not need to resort to sloppy plotting and wilful blindness.
Another irritating bit (maybe only with this book, I honestly can’t remember) is the placement of the very frequent time skips. Something dramatic happens… and it’s two weeks later. WTF? I want to see how our characters cope! I don’t want a summary of what they went through in the two weeks since.
Most baffling is the end, though.
Okay, it was not horrible or anything, but I’m sad that this series, which, after its very rocky start, shaped up so nicely, seems to be on the decline again.
I was a bit disappointed with this. I would've liked to see some of the angsty "I'm too old/your father's ex" drama played out but they were having sex almost straight away and deciding to make a go of it despite. If we'd been shown the conflict, clear yearning and hurtful repudiation between the two in the previous books I'd have been fine. But all we got was "Reed is quiet and withdrawn" guff. I feel cheated. But I liked Paris. But why was there more evil women? Where are all the nice females in this series?
After dragging my feet on reading this due to the age gap difference, I found myself pleasantly surprised. All in all it was good. I didn't find it to be the best of the bunch and while I enjoy the series, it seems the author may be struggling to figure out new hookups to keep it going. I wonder if any one else may feel the same?
Not particularly good nor bad. It follows the same build up as the last ten books, but I didn't really got into the book. Plus once again the villain of the book was a woman, who had no redeemable characteristics. That's a problem with all female characters I remember in this series and it annoys me so much! Plus in the last chapter there was one scene that made me so angry. It was unrealistic and I somehow felt very uncomfortable with it. Because of this scene and the woman issue that presented itself very dominantly, I gave it one star.
I just adored the start to this! Cutest prologue ever. I kinda lost interest in it mid way through and thought it just dragged on a bit more than it really should have, but still continue to love this series. I love this second generation, the kids all grown up, and look forward to the next pairing.
I was looking forward to reading Reeds story and was surprised to see him coupled with Anson. The story was interesting but I can't say I loved it. I think I maybe getting tired of the series and that's why I feel this way....
