Life threw me lemons so I used them to clean my garbage disposal and now my house smells fresh. I run on coffee and chocolate with a little craft beer thrown in for good measure. When I'm not writing or reading or creating in some other way, I'm out and about with the kids or catching up on the latest Netflix original.

There is chemistry between these 2 almost from the beginning. Storm tries to fight it and Ryder wants to find out why.
We find out Storm never knew who her father was. Storm's aunt kept Storm's secret even from Storm in order to keep her safe. Now Storm has come into her powers and she doesn't know what to think. The 2 men in her life have always kept her protected and now we know why. 2 gorgeous men and she could never figure out why she wasn't attracted to them. Even though I really enjoyed this book I probably won't continue on with the series just because my TBR is so looong.

I truly wish I could give this a higher rating, but that wouldn't be honest, and I pride myself on honest reviews.

Likes: There are a lot of great ideas here, especially pulling from lore that I haven't read much in. I'm not very familiar with Celtic lore, which I think is where the author used, and I was interested in seeing where that went.

Dislikes: The ideas, as much as I liked them, ended up not delivering for me. Part of that has to do with editing. The finished product I own has a lot of typographical errors which took away from the reading experience for me. In all honesty, this book almost became a "did not finish" for that reason because I almost feel like I've read the first draft of a story rather than a polished work; however, the errors were frequent enough to interrupt the flow of reading that I can't in good conscience leave that out of my review.

Dialogue was also jarring. I know there are rules about contractions in writing, but contemporary people still speak with contractions, but every character uses them so rarely in their dialogue, which made it harder for me to get into the story. I didn't hear different voices for each character, since they all sounded the same.

Insta-love. Although the story tries to rationalize it, it doesn't work for me. Adult characters who have known each other for approximately 24-48 hours are saying "I love you" and genuinely mean it romantically. The male lead, Ryder, also sneaked into Storm's (the female lead) house and found her, and she didn't seem to bothered by this. This is potentially rationalized by something else in the text, but it felt very Edward Cullen to me, for lack of a better comparison. There are a lot of revelations that don't merit much reaction from Storm, honestly, and I feel like more time could have been devoted to fleshing out the revelations themselves. She seemingly brushes off something that's a pretty big deal in regards to Ryder and his history with her family, and I'm not sure that the text does enough to support her reaction (or lack of one). I really wanted to like the characters, but I did not enjoy my reading experience and struggled to get to the end.

In all, I give this a one star rating. There are a lot of good ideas here, but the text didn't deliver. Maybe with more content editing and direction they could have been stronger. I really hope that the electronic edition of this story is more polished than the print edition I have.

Overall *** Plot *** Interactions *** Characters *** World **** Originality **** Grammar **** Style ****

This review is based upon a review copy given to me by the author.

The main protagonist, Storm Sullivan comes from a long line of Seers, but she doesn't care. In fact, for most of her life, she hasn't cared about much of anything. When she learns of her Aunt Trin's death, no tears come. Her two best friends Dan and Shane are gorgeous men who both love her, but she feels no attraction to them. In fact, she's never really felt any attraction for any man. Until she meets Ryder, an immortal who has been tasked to destroy the Sullivan seer's to avert the fulfillment of an old prophecy.

When Storm meets Ryder, the sheer intensity of the physical attraction between the two overwhelms them, leaving both of them shocked and confused.

After Storm encounters Ryder, her life changes. Suddenly she can feel again and just as suddenly, powers that she has never experienced before begin to manifest. At the same time, ancient prophecies by her ancestor's come to the fore and she finds herself in the middle of a battleground between her kind and the immortals.

The writing in Ryder On The Storm is generally solid and clean. It is told from the points of view of the two main characters, Ryder and Storm (thus the title). It fulfills its role as a paranormal romance and should satisfy lover's of that genre.

In Ryder, Violet Patterson has a deft hand at description, but some of her dialog seems a bit forced or out of place. The book starts up and grabs the readers attention quickly, and I found myself enjoying the story. It carried my interested even though the characters felt a little two dimensional. It wasn't enough to seriously interfere with my enjoyment of the book or the characters, but with one exception, there were few surprises lurking inside the characters.

The story-line is engaging and satisfying through the majority of the book. I found myself drawn into Storm and Ryder's world and found it easy to root for both protagonists and their budding romance. Unfortunately for me, I found the ending a bit flat. The climax and conclusion of the story was a bit forced and held very little tension. When it was over I found myself wondering if the author had just gotten tired of the story.

Despite the uninspiring conclusion, overall, this is a fun quick read and not a bad start to a new series. Typically, as a series continues, the author's skills improve markedly and I wouldn't be surprised to see that here.

Blending Celtic myth, shape-changers, angels and demons (perhaps), paranormal powers and paranormal romance, Violet Patterson’s Ryder on the Storm brings readers into a complex word of gods, seraphs and humans, bound to the myth of the Emerald Seer and curious questions about its provenance. When good intentions go awry and well-meaning guardians betray, Storm Sullivan finds she’s inherited far more than she bargained for. Seemingly alone in the world, except for two hunky friends, she’s hardly equipped to cope with an unknown history, still less dangerous threats from handsome strangers. But lots of mysteries will come to light as the story progresses and Storm’s strange powers meet Ryder’s potent threat.

Ryder on the Storm has plenty of romance, intimate bedroom scenes, modern-day action, and suspense of mythical proportions. Characters grow and change pleasingly as the story switches between Storm and Ryder’s points of view. Occasionally odd word usages tripped me up, but not enough to detract from a fast fun tale with pleasant good humor and a nice sense for twisted mythology.

The end is not the end, of course, since it’s part one of a series. But enough threads are resolved to make this an enjoyable exciting read.

Disclosure: I heard about this during the author’s blog tour and was pleased to have the opportunity to read the book.

A different approach...

An enjoyable change from the usual supernatural tale. The characters are well defined and the story is an unusual take on the unveiling of the hidden treasure. Any girl would love guardians like Storms and I look forward to enjoying the next in the series..

Ryder on the Storm - Emerald Seer by Violet Patterson.

This was a very good read. I loved the world that the author built. I also enjoyed the way the told the story swapping between her hero and heroine's points of view.

No vampires or werewolves here but plenty of paranormal. This is a fresh idea on paranormal romance and I really enjoyed it.

This is a well conceived and very well told story. I think it is a great effort by a first time author. I will definitely read more by Violet Patterson.

On the negative side, there were a few more editing errors than the last few traditionally published books I've read. They did not detract from the story and were so numerous as to annoy me.

I the story of Ryder and Storm will be continued in the next book I think. I really enjoyed the supporting cast of characters and look forward to hearing more about them. I guess this is a Happy For Now ending. While I can see these two taking on more challenges together, I cannot see one without the other. I think they are cemented together.

I'm looking forward to seeing where the next part of this story goes.

I recommend this book without reservations to lovers of paranormal romance.

A short but thrilling paranormal romance featuring a number of unusual species. Instead of the usual creatures, you have a psychic, seraphs, immortals and Celtic Goddesses. There is also a deranged villain making life annoying.

The story focused mostly on Ryder and Storm, with duel narratives. The narration was smooth, with no overlaps or gaps. Switching from one person to the other added a depth to the story that elevated the otherwise typical romance plot.

I enjoyed the unique characters and abilities, but found myself puzzled over the immortals. A little more background and explanation would be useful. I enjoyed the characters, maybe the secondary ones slightly more than the main, but only because they seemed a little more unpredictable and unusual.

Overall, there was quite a lot accomplished in this short story. I would like more detail though. If this was expanded by another 100 pages or so, I think I would have loved it instead of just enjoying it as there were some scenes and explanations that needed more to them. Definitely worth checking out for a quick weekend read though.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a paranormal romance so it does exactly what it says on the tin - you've got romance, immortals (who refreshingly aren't vampires!), seraphs (because that's less girly than angels) and a Celtic Goddess thrown in for good measure. Not to mention the humour that comes through. There is enough heat in this book to make it unsuitable for the more innocent among us but I didn't think it was too bad or too much.

Number 2 is now on my wishlist - roll on Christmas.

I liked the story and the twists and turns kept me reading. The characters were interesting and sometimes very funny. If you're looking for a good fantasy read that includes people having special abilities, immortals and angels, you'll want to pick this one up.
